Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
In this special bonus episode, we share a full chapter from Matt’s upcoming book, Becoming Like Jesus — the chapter readers asked for most: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”In it, Matt talks about what it means to grieve honestly before God in a world that constantly pushes us toward distraction, comfort, and numbness. This chapter explores how mourning shapes us into people who are tender toward both our own sin and the brokenness around us.We’ll reflect on the old Puritan prayer for “the gift of tears,” the way sin deforms and distorts the human soul, and how easy it is in our internet-saturated age to become overwhelmed, cynical, or emotionally shut down. But Jesus doesn’t call us to harden ourselves. He invites us into deeper communion with Him through repentance, compassion, and presence with hurting people.More than anything, we hope this episode reminds you that comfort is not found in avoiding sorrow but in meeting Jesus there. His presence, His promises, and His redemption are enough for every kind of mourning.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. Why the Christian Life Isn’t “Up and to the Right”
In this episode, we’re diving into Matt’s new book Becoming Like Jesus: The Everyday Journey to Living a Life of Holiness. We talk about what it actually looks like to follow Jesus over the long haul—not the polished, “up and to the right” version, but the real story of highs, lows, doubt, growth, and grace. We unpack how sanctification isn’t a moment or a light switch—it’s a lifelong process. We share why so many of us get discouraged when suffering or struggle shows up, and how that might actually be part of God’s good work in us. We also talk through the Beatitudes as a framework for understanding what Jesus is forming in us over time.More than anything, we hope this conversation reminds you that you’re not behind, you’re not disqualified, and you’re not alone. If you don’t quit—if you keep bringing your whole self to Jesus—you’re actually right in the middle of the journey He’s using to make you more like Him.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. How to Walk Through Seasons of Suffering
In this episode, we talk about suffering—not just as a hard part of life, but as a real part of life in a fallen world. We share some of our earliest memories of suffering, the seasons that disoriented us, and the ways God has met us in both sudden storms and long stretches of pain. From grief and betrayal to illness, relational heartache, and unanswered prayers, we try to talk honestly about what it looks like to suffer without pretending. We also spend time in Psalm 107 and the different kinds of suffering it describes—wandering, oppression, folly, and storms—and how those categories help us make sense of our own lives. Along the way, we talk about lament, community, sustaining grace, and the kindness of bringing our real hearts before the Lord instead of a polished version of ourselves. Our hope is simple: if you’re in a season of suffering right now, you’d feel encouraged to keep crying out to God, keep looping in the saints, and keep trusting that even here, He is at work.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. What God Is Doing In Our Day
In this episode, we’re talking about what we’re seeing and sensing right now—both in the Church and out in the world. It really does feel like something is happening. From college campuses to local churches, there’s a growing hunger for God that we haven’t seen in a long time. We’re watching people—especially Gen Z—wake up to the reality that what the world promised isn’t enough. There’s a search for something real, something transcendent. And by God’s grace, many are finding that in Jesus. At the same time, we’re also seeing the Church reawaken to its need for the power of God. Not just good sermons or great worship, but genuine dependence on the Holy Spirit through prayer, fasting, and repentance. We’ve felt that in our own lives too—this deeper awareness that we can’t manufacture what only God can do.So this episode is really an invitation: pay attention to where God is moving, draw near to it, and ask Him to do it in you. We don’t want to sit on the sidelines and watch—we want to be part of it.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. The Perfectionism Trap
In this episode, we talk honestly about perfectionism—what it looks like when your identity is built on performance, and how exhausting that kind of striving can become. Lauren shares how, from childhood, she felt driven to succeed: getting the best grades, being first chair in band, doing everything “right,” and eventually trying to be the perfect Christian, worship leader, and mom.But underneath all that achievement was a deeper desire for glory—her own glory. And that pursuit can quietly shape the way we see ourselves, our failures, and even the people around us.We discuss how God began to expose that in Lauren’s life through music, ministry, and eventually Celebrate Recovery. What looked like success on the outside was actually fueled by fear, shame, and the pressure to prove she was enough. The turning point came through rediscovering the gospel—not just that Jesus died for our sins, but that He also lived the perfect life we couldn’t live and gives us His righteousness. That realization changes everything. It frees us to admit weakness, ask forgiveness, and stop striving to prove ourselves. We talk about Martin Luther’s idea of the “theology of glory” versus the “theology of the cross,” and how learning to embrace weakness has actually opened the door to deeper joy, healthier relationships, and more freedom in parenting, ministry, and everyday life.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. What We’re Learning About the Holy Spirit
In this episode, we talk about our journey with the Holy Spirit. We both grew up in church contexts where He wasn’t ignored—but He wasn’t really known either. Over time, through Scripture, ministry, and seasons of stretching, we’ve learned that the Spirit isn’t just a doctrine to understand or gifts to experience. He is God with us.We share what it looks like for us to walk with Him between Sundays—asking Him to illuminate the Word, guide our steps, soften our hearts, and provide power where our strength runs out. More than anything, we’ve learned that the Holy Spirit loves to make much of Jesus, and life with Him is marked not just by power, but by tenderness. Our hope is simple: that you’d open your Bible, ask the Spirit to speak, and begin growing in friendship with Him.ORDER MY LATEST BOOKBecoming Like Jesus is a book about “progressive sanctification” that takes it beyond church words into the honest conversation so many Christians have navigated. Building Rhythms That Keep You From Burning Out
In this episode, we walk through what it looks like to do a “drain audit.” What drains us emotionally? Physically? Spiritually? Relationally? We talk honestly about how tragedy, busyness, sickness, loud rooms, traffic, and even good ministry can leave us thin.We also talk about rhythms—daily, weekly, and seasonal—that help us build a replenishment cycle. Not as indulgence. Not as an escape. But as obedience. Because running empty isn’t holy. How to Find (and Keep) Deep Friendships
In this episode of Between Sundays, Lauren and I talk about something that’s foundational to life in Christ but often overlooked: friendship. God made us for connection. You and I were not designed to walk this life alone, and yet so many of us are doing just that. We unpack the epidemic of loneliness, how real transformation happens in community, how to pursue meaningful friendships, and how to discern who is safe to be vulnerable with. It’s not easy. It takes time. It takes risk. But it is also worth it. Trusting Christ in Trauma
I got to sit down with Olga Reed, a longtime member of The Village Church and someone I deeply admire. Olga walks us through her story—from battling depression and loneliness as a first-generation college student, to coming to faith in Christ, and then surviving one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history at Virginia Tech. Her testimony is a resounding declaration that the darkness did not win and Christ was at work even in the darkest places. Freedom from Performance
In this episode, I sit down with my lovely wife Lauren to explore her story. She shares about growing up as a “good girl,” always chasing approval, achievement, and the A+. But beneath that pursuit was a deeper struggle: the fear of being weak, broken, or not enough. We talk about how that mindset shaped our marriage, her ministry, and her identity—and the powerful moment when she finally laid it all down at Recovery. This conversation is filled with the kind of grace that sets people free. On Suffering and Sonship
In this episode, I sit down with my friend Josh Turner—pastor, leader, and now author of Into the Storm. Josh’s story is one of unexpected suffering and surprising strength. We talk about his daughter Riley, born with a rare condition, undiagnosed for 12 years, and now living life with courage and clarity most adults don’t have. Josh shares what it was like walking through that pain while pastoring, wrestling with God’s sovereignty, and being forced to reexamine what he actually believed about suffering. That experience, by the grace of God, moved Josh from being just a servant of God to living like a son. We also dive into the ministry he now leads, 10Ten Project, which helps pastors get healthy before they burn out or blow up. Embodied Faith and the Death of Platitudes
I sat down with artist, writer and friend Josh Nadeau to explore his path from theological precocity to personal crisis and ultimately, redemptive beauty. Josh shares how growing up steeped in Reformed theology didn’t insulate him from a slow descent into apathy, addiction, spiritual numbness, and walking through life “as a ghost”. It was beauty—raw, embodied, soul-stirring beauty—that woke him up. We talk about deconstruction, embodiment, addiction, the love of God, and why aesthetics — embodied faith — might be what Saints are made from. When One Drink Isn't Enough
In this episode, I sit down with JP and Ashley Graves—longtime friends and members of our church—with a story that’s both difficult and deeply hopeful. We talk about alcohol—not just as a drink, but as an idol that slowly took the throne in JP’s life and nearly destroyed their marriage. What started as casual drinking turned into dependence, deceit, and despair. Ashley shares what it was like to live with a man she barely recognized, and JP walks us through the moment of surrender that led to healing. This isn’t just about sobriety—it’s about learning to recognize the lies you may be believing and the power of Jesus to meet us in our mess, pull us out, and redeem what feels too far gone. If you’re feeling stuck, ashamed, or maybe you aren’t sure if your drinking is a problem—this episode is for you.In This EpisodeA Fun Marriage with a Hidden Struggle: JP and Ashley share their early faith journeys, how they met, and the beginnings of alcohol use in their marriage.Numbing with Alcohol Becomes Normal: COVID, cultural norms, and unprocessed pain escalate drinking into full dependency—especially for JP.Deception, Distance, and Despair: JP begins hiding alcohol, Ashley senses the loss of connection, and both begin living separate lives under one roof.A Daughter’s Baptism and a Drunken Confession: JP breaks down the night before he’s supposed to baptize their daughter, leading to a confession that changes everything.Recovery, Rebuilding, and Radical Forgiveness: JP enters counseling and AA. Ashley processes her pain and begins to hope again as God starts to restore. For the One Who Feels Hopeless: JP and Ashley speak directly to listeners—those stuck in addiction and those silently suffering beside them.Resources If you are struggling with alcohol, I want to encourage you to find help. Purpose, Identity and Calling
I sat down with Luke Lezon and Will Chung to explore how Gen Z and Millennials are wrestling with identity, dignity, and discipleship in a rapidly shifting culture. These young pastors are preaching into cities like Orlando and LA—transient places that offer gospel-sending opportunities—and we unpacked the dangers of comfort culture and over-therapeutic narratives. We talked about how the call to follow Christ includes self-denial, repentance, and mission. Each of us shared stories of wilderness seasons, pastoral burnout, and the deep healing required to lead from wholeness. This is a deep dive into the joys and costs of courageous ministry today. Caring Well for Others
This is a sobering yet hope-filled episode. I sit down with Summer Vinson Berger and Adam Paa to discuss the pain, complexity, and redemptive potential of shepherding care in the local church. Finishing Well with Ray Ortlund and Crawford Loritts
This episode is special to me. I sit down with two of my heroes in the faith—Ray Ortlund and Crawford Loritts. These men have been anchors for me in moments of doubt and discouragement, and I wanted to ask them the questions that most pastors eventually ask themselves: How do you stay faithful for the long haul? How do you finish well when so many don't? We talk about the rhythms that sustained them over decades, the call of ministry that’s far more than a career, and what it looks like to fight pride and pursue humility every single day. We also dive deep into marriage, legacy, and the sacredness of being a pastor. If you're in the trenches—especially in your 20s to 40s—this one's for you. In this episode, I sat down with three close friends—Zack Brown, Kasey Brown, and PJ Kratohvil—all veterans who served overseas in the Army and Marines. We unpack what life in the military gave them, what it took, and how faith became the thread that started to stitch them back together. Why Elders Matter
In this episode, I sat down with Mason King and Nick Crawford—two of my fellow elders at The Village—to talk about plurality. Not because it’s trendy, but because it’s biblical, and because it has been a safeguard in my ministry. Early on, I had all the power, all the control—and I knew it. It was efficient, it was fast, and it was dangerous. So we talk about why one-man leadership is a bad idea, what true elder plurality actually looks like, and how it’s protected us, humbled us, and served the body over the years. The Beauty of Belonging
Man, today’s episode is rich. I’m sitting down with Dr. Michelle Bowman—an educator, leader, and sister in Christ who has walked through the fire and come out on the other side with her joy still. Her story? It’s not the cleaned-up version. It’s real. Ten years of struggle, a marriage that ended in heartbreak, and a journey back into the family of faith, not with shame but with strength. What you’ll hear in Michelle is the kind of resilience that only comes from walking with Jesus through deep pain. From idolizing marriage to embracing her calling as a spiritual mother, she’s living proof that you can lose everything the world calls secure and still gain something far better—belonging, joy, and purpose in Christ. If you've ever felt like your story disqualifies you, let this be a holy disruption. Women in Ministry
In this episode of The Overcomers, I sit down with Colleen Searcy and Ryan Wester for a really honest, meaningful conversation about calling, faith, and what it looks like to lead in the local church as a woman.Colleen grew up in a home shaped by deep faith. Her grandfather didn’t just teach her the Apostles' Creed—he lived it. From early on, she was being discipled, not just taught. Her story is one of steady formation in the gospel. Ryan’s journey, on the other hand, is very different. She came from a background marked by pain and dysfunction, and yet God broke in with redeeming grace, drawing her out of darkness and into life and ministry.Their stories are so different, but both are powerful testimonies of God’s faithfulness—and of how He calls women into ministry through all kinds of paths. We dig into some of the challenges women face in ministry—especially in places where their gifts haven’t always been recognized or encouraged. Colleen and Ryan talk about how discipleship and spiritual friendship helped them navigate that space and step into their calling with clarity and courage.I want the Church to be a place that sees the gifts God’s given His daughters and cheers them on as they lead, teach, disciple, and serve the church. Because when women walk in their Spirit-given calling, the whole body flourishes. This conversation reminded me—again—that the Spirit of God is doing something beautiful in and through the lives of women at The Village and beyond. And I’m grateful I get to witness it.TOPICS DISCUSSED(00:14) – How Jesus Found Us and Called Us In(09:13) – When Ministry Finds You in the Most Unexpected Places(12:53) – Discipled Into a Calling(26:03) – Doing Ministry Side by Side Without the Weirdness(37:03) – Cheering Her On(41:21) – Let Her Teach, Lead, and Build the ChurchResources MentionedWomen in Ministry (Condensed)Women in Ministry (Full Version)FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Peace and Purpose in Sobriety
In this episode of The Overcomers, I sit down with Danny Spencer, a long-time member of The Village Church, as he shares his powerful story of healing and hope. Raised in a home marked by addiction and loss, Danny carried deep wounds into adulthood—even as he built a successful banking career. Behind the scenes, alcohol was quietly undoing everything. At his lowest point, Danny found his way into a 12-step meeting and soon after, into the community at Highland Village First Baptist Church. It was there that God began a radical work of redemption. Through the support of people like Ida Stump and a faithful home group, Danny’s life began to change—his sobriety took hold, and his faith deepened. In this conversation, we explore the healing power of Gospel community, the beauty of restored relationships, and the truth that no one is ever too far gone. If you or someone you love is struggling, Danny’s story will point you to hope, healing, and the One who breaks every chain.TOPICS DISCUSSEDFrom Rock Bottom to RedemptionGod’s Faithfulness in the MessBreaking Chains in CommunityHealing That Only Jesus BringsFOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Leadership under pressure is no joke. Pastors Leonce Crump and Joby Martin open up about the weight of responsibility—when betrayal, exhaustion, and doubt threaten to take you out. Leonce shares about seasons of heartbreak that nearly broke him, and Joby talks about burnout, even in a thriving ministry. This isn’t just about pushing through—it’s about leaning into Jesus when you’re running on empty. What keeps you in the fight? Joby almost walked away from ministry, ready to sell caskets instead—until his wife nudged him to give it one more shot. Matt shares about hitting a wall, realizing he was leading from fumes instead of fresh conviction. And Leonce? Imperfect Parenting
Family life is messy—loud, exhausting, and often overwhelming. But the everyday moments—car rides, meals, bedtime—can be sacred opportunities to point our kids to Jesus. This week on the Overcomers Podcast, I sit down with Adam Griffin, author and host of the Family Discipleship Podcast, to talk about leading our families in grace, not perfection. Adam shares his struggles with impatience and how embracing our weaknesses can deepen our parenting. We unpack simple but powerful practices—like the driveway prayer to reset before stepping inside, the sacredness of family meals, and the importance of consistency in shaping faith. And in a world where screens are discipling our kids faster than we are, Adam offers wisdom on keeping them engaged, guarding their hearts, and staying united as parents. You don’t have to be a perfect parent—just present, humble, and faithful.TOPICS DISCUSSEDParenting Challenges and Cultivating HumilityServing and Loving ImperfectlyHome Formation Through Routines and MilestonesFostering Family Connection Through CommunicationNavigating Different Parenting PhilosophiesNavigating Technological Challenges in ParentingParenting with CommunityGUEST RESOURCESFamily Discipleship PodcastFamily Discipleship BookAdam's Forthcoming BookFollow AdamFollow Family Discipleship PodcastFOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Life and Sexuality
Thanks for tuning in to another episode of The Overcomers. In this episode, I’m joined by Kim Zember, whose journey with Jesus shows the messy, beautiful reality of sanctification. Growing up in a Christian home in Southern California, Kim had some transformative encounters with Jesus, but her path hasn’t always been straightforward. We dive into the challenges Kim faced growing up—especially her early view of God as this authoritative figure, which led to a legalistic way of thinking. There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to understanding who we are in Christ, and for Kim, the journey wasn’t a straight line. We talk about the moments that shook her understanding of herself, her faith, and her sexuality—especially navigating feelings and desires she had that seemed counter to who she believed she truly was. This episode is a reminder that God’s love and grace are bigger than our struggles, and no matter where we are, we can always turn toward Him. Join us for an honest, powerful conversation about faith, identity, and transformation.TOPICS DISCUSSEDNavigating Gender Identity and RelationshipsThe Struggle With Self-Identity and FaithEncountering God's Healing and LoveEmbracing Imperfection and God’s Grace Through Relational FaithFinding Grace and GrowthGUEST RESOURCESKim Zember’s WebsiteFollow KimBuy Kim’s BookFOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. The Healing Process
What if the key to true success is embracing your vulnerabilities? In today’s episode of the Overcomers Podcast, the tables turn—Lauren Chandler interviews me about a season of deep transformation. We’ll unpack my journey from external success in ministry to confronting the internal struggles I couldn’t ignore anymore. I was emotionally stuck, overwhelmed, and hiding behind humor and problem-solving. That’s when I decided to get help and began working with a counselor who challenged my approach to life. The road wasn’t easy. Jack, the counselor, pushed me to face uncomfortable truths, confront my defense mechanisms, and dive deep into the emotional wounds I’d been avoiding. This wasn’t about fixing problems—it was about learning to engage in real relationships, especially with my family. That shift from trying to fix everything to truly connecting has changed the way I minister and live. This conversation is about embracing change, having the courage to grow, and facing the most guarded parts of your inner self. If you’ve been feeling stuck, or know there’s more growth ahead, I hope you find strength and Christian courage from this conversation.TOPICS DISCUSSED2015 And The Realization I Needed HelpDiscovering Deep Hurt and HealingThe Turning Point in Re-Discovering My IdentityHow Solitude Has Helped Me With Soul IntegrationFOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. The Kings Table
On this episode, I sit down with two of my closest friends, Josh and Trevor, to reflect on insights from a 90-year Harvard study on adult development, highlighting the essential role of deep, reliable friendships—what we refer to as a "King's Table" or "3 am friends." Throughout our discussion, we underscore the significance of vulnerability in building lasting male friendships. Intentionality and proximity are key to forming connections that stand the test of time, from everyday commitments to sharing life’s highs and lows. By embracing vulnerability, we transform surface level friendships into profound relationships. There’s a distinct difference between invited and forced vulnerability. And my call to you is to embrace the courage required to be open and find the depth and beauty that follows. The world needs men who are courageous in all aspects of their lives, but particularly in courageously exploring and exposing the underlying narratives, whatever they are, that we all believe at times. I hope you are encouraged and challenged to be who God has created and called you to be.Topics DiscussedImportance of Male Friendships and ProximityBuilding Deep Relationships Through VulnerabilityForced Vulnerability vs. Invited VulnerabilityUnpacking Shame and VulnerabilityUnpacking Pain and PurposeEncouraging Men Towards Vulnerability and AdventureFOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Worship-Fueled Courage in the Face of Adversity
As I wrap up this season, I want to neatly summarize what this season was about. Whether it was walking through the four Horseman of the apocalypse, interviews, question and answers, the whole point was to highlight how true overcoming is not tied to mere personal effort or any treasure of this world, but arises from deep, heartfelt worship, rooted in the confidence of Jesus' reign and rule. This worship brings strength, courage, and gratitude, that can transform our responses to adversity, infusing our hearts with gratitude and confidence. My prayer has been and will continue to be that you are reminded that God has called you, specifically you, within the grand narrative of God's story to walk in the confidence that Jesus has come and will come again. And when you fully surrender to His rule and reign in your life, you have the power to overcome life's challenges.FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Overcoming Spiritual Starvation with Gary and Sandi Stevenson
It's possible to have everything this world has to offer and be starving — maybe not physically, but spiritually. In this episode of The Overcomers, I want to help you gain a deeper understanding of the profound symbolism of the black horse from Revelation 6 and its connection to spiritual famine. Gary and Sandi Stevenson's marriage was built on shaky grounds from the start, marred by infidelity and addiction, which led to a perfect facade hiding internal turmoil. Through their candid sharing, we explore how their relationship almost disintegrated under the weight of shame and sin — even while attending and being involved in their local church. It was only through the acts of confession, repentance and walking in the light with community that they were able to combat the lies of the Black Rider. Their testimony is a moving example of how bringing darkness into the light can lead to profound healing and a restored, abundant life through Jesus.FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show and make sure others find it, is to subscribe and leave a review. Overcoming the Pressures of the Platform with Max Lucado
This episode is a slight departure from my usual episode, but I had the profound opportunity to sit with Max Lucado, a man I have admired for many years, to discuss the layers of growth and grace that have marked his journey from a young man battling alcohol to the seasoned pastor he is today. In our candid conversation, you will get to see the heart of a spiritual leader who has walked through the fire of personal trials and emerged with an faith in Jesus worthy of imitation. Max's vulnerability in sharing his story reminds us that even those in church leadership need the grace of Jesus.Stripping away the veneer often associated with pastoral life, Max and I discuss the hurdles of vulnerability, balancing ministry and family, and the relentless pull for approval. Our conversation highlights the power of community in the healing process and the profound freedom that comes from being transparent about one's struggles. We confront the temptation of seeking validation from others, reminding ourselves that our worth is not tethered to our imperfections but is instead a reflection of divine grace. My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Persevering Over the Oppression of the Pale Rider
I've personally felt the heavy hand of illness and seen its shadow loom over those I care for. In this episode, we will examine what the Pale Horse represents and how we are to combat it. We will also take a look at what Revelation has to say about how illness and sickness affects the saints today. This conversation isn't just theological—it's personal. I share some of my own journey through sickness, and how I had to wrestle with the diverse Christian beliefs regarding faith and healing. If you find yourself in the midst of illness, or you’re walking with a loved one through a season of intense suffering, I hope this episode gives you hope and strengthens your spine for singing God’s praises into the storm and gives you a biblically sound framework for standing firm on the promises of God.My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Confronting the Despair of the Black Rider
In this episode, I want to orient our thinking around how we're going to experience the Black Horse and its Rider. Because if we're going to overcome the Black Horse, then we need to understand how the rider and the horse affect us and those around us.This conversation isn't meant to be an intellectual exercise; it's a realistic look at the black rider's impact on our faith and walk with Christ. This episode is an invitation to understand the deeper spiritual dynamics at play and to rekindle a faith that seeks sustenance in the true bread of life.My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Common Questions about the Book of Revelation
Could the book of Revelation be more comforting than confounding, more hopeful than horrifying? On this episode, I’m tackling some of the most common questions asked about the book of Revelation. From overcoming anxiety around the book, to the rapture, to the end times — I walk through what the book says and doesn’t say. I hope to dispel some of the mystery and offer a hopeful vision for the believer. This is not just about end times; it's a heartening portrayal of the eternal fulfillment that believers can look forward to; a future that is far more about promise than apocalyptic dread. My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Overcoming False Gospels with Russell Roberts
We've been walking through the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and if you'll remember, the first horse is a white horse and its rider has a white robe and a crown. It looks like Jesus, but it's not Jesus. And so I said in Episode 1 that this rider is like an antichrist. It comes presenting itself as a gospel but it's no gospel at all. And one of the ways this plays itself out is outside the church is false gospels — this will save you or this will make your life complete, But inside the church it looks like heresy. It takes some aspect of what's true about God and it twists it.My friend Russ Roberts, trying to find his way out of a markedly rebellious lifestyle, found himself entwined in the alluring yet misleading doctrines of the International Church of Christ. His experience serves as an example of the perils that lurk within seemingly pious communities, where the truth of Jesus Christ's message can be obscured by well-crafted imitations. It’s a journey marked by small, deliberate steps of obedience, much like Peter’s, filled with inevitable stumbles yet propelled forward by the redeeming power of Christ's love.My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Guarding Against the Conflict and Anger of the Red Rider
On this episode, we will examine the red horse and its rider from Revelation 6 — an emblem of war and rage. It seems like everywhere we look there is war happening. But it's not just global conflicts that I want to examine; I want to turn the lens inward. I want to draw your attention to the reality that these bloody conflicts and war is never far from our souls. There is a violence that that can bubble up in us at any moment if we're not careful. The enemy of the end-times want to divide and sow conflict and I want to challenge you to fight for a Church that wields the spiritual armor of meekness and kindness in a world all too familiar with violence and rage.My prayer is that through this series you will discover and be reminded of the hope and courage available to overcome life's challenges through the finished work of Christ. Rejecting the False Gospel of the White Rider
This season I’ll be talking through some of the topics from my latest book, The Overcomers. In this episode I’m addressing what the White Rider represents in the book of Revelation. I’ll unpack the subtle dangers of false gospels infiltrating Christian thought—be it the illusive pursuit of self-actualization or the distorted focus on health and wellness over spiritual depth. Overcoming Poverty with Richmond Wandera
On this special bonus episode of The Overcomers, I get to sit down with Pastor Richmond Wandera. Growing up in the slums of Naguru, Uganda, Richmond experienced a life that few could imagine. After the murder of his father, his family was plunged into poverty; a life where survival became the primary focus. His life took an unexpected turn when his mother sought help from a local church, an act that would bring Compassion International into their lives and set Richmond on a path toward hope and healing.Lauren and I love the mission of Compassion International and have sponsored children through Compassion for almost the entirety of our marriage. Overcoming Addiction and Demonic Oppression
Tyler’s story may be one of the crazier stories I’ve gotten to be a part of, but what I love about our God is that despite all the evil the enemy intended for Tyler, his life is marked by God’s pursuit of him. Tyler, opens up about the tragedies that have marked his life, his spiral into addiction, and his experiences with spiritual warfare. From childhood abuse to the loss of his mother, Tyler learned to find escape in substances. If you find yourself facing similar struggles, remember that victory in Christ is possible. Overcoming an Eating Disorder
Beneath the veneer of a successful college athlete, Becca grappled with anxiety and eating disorders, resorting to harmful coping mechanisms that included purging, overexercising, and substance abuse. The institutional and societal pressures around body image coupled with her desire to achieve pushed Becca to her breaking point. One encouragement I hope you hear is there is no spiritual bypass—the only way through is through, but God is right there in the the middle with you.FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show is to help others find it! In the previous episode, you heard the story of the Drake family as they faced their son's illness and ultimate passing, as well as the questions that stirred up within them. In this episode I want to help lift your face and turn your gaze from your immediate situation and toward the unseen realities — where you can find endurance even in the most difficult times. Overcoming the Loss of a Child to Cancer
The Drakes, longtime members of The Village Church and active figures in our Recovery ministry, share the journey of their son Abram’s battle with neuroblastoma — a rare, aggressive form of childhood cancer. From the initial symptoms to the unthinkable loss of their young child, they find themselves asking some really tough questions of God. I have been so encouraged by the courage and belief in the promises of God, even when their faith was feeble. I pray our conversation encourages you in the Lord.Guest ResourcesJack and Ashlee's podcast: Abram's SongThank you to our SponsorsDwell is our Presenting Sponsor this year and I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with them. Overcoming Divorce and Dysfunction
SummaryI was once again so encouraged by my conversation with the Derdens. There is little about Josh and Domonique’s story that isn’t shocking — from how they met, to Domonique uncovering Josh’s affair the night before their wedding, to how the Lord ultimately mended their hearts and marriage. It’s a gut wrenching story of the damage caused by unrepentant sin but a testament to God’s unrelenting pursuit of us. I pray you are encouraged in the Lord through their story.FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show is to help others find it! Overcoming in the Midst of a Broken Marriage
Aaron and Jill Young’s story is heart wrenching at times. They take us through their difficult experiences, from growing up in a broken family to their struggle to find identity and meaning and how those undealt with wounds led to heartache early in their marriage. While what led to the brokenness in their marriage is all too common today, what’s different is how they navigated the pain and aftermath of infidelity. If you are listening and find yourself in a similar situation or even on the road toward infidelity, I pray that you would heed the warnings of the Young’s and be encouraged by what the Lord did in their Marriage.FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE:Instagram | Youtube | Website | NewsletterIf you’ve enjoyed this episode, one of the best ways to support the show is to help others find it!
