Viking braids and braids: the art of looking authentic
#vikings #braidedhairstyles #history In this episode, Hendrik and Carmen take a deep dive into the world of Viking braids and show you what we really know about Norse braided hairstyles. From the archaeological finds in Hedeby to the few written sources available – we separate historical facts from modern interpretations. We examine the fascinating state of the sources: over 1,250 combs found in Hedeby alone, Ibn Fadlan's accounts from the Volga, and the famous Hårby Valkyrie. At the same time, we explain practical braiding techniques – from the simple three-strand braid to the fishtail braid and more complex variations. One thing becomes clear: the Vikings placed enormous value on hair care, but the specific hairstyles we know today as "typically Viking Age" are largely modern creations inspired by series like Vikings. Whether for LARP, reenactment, or simply out of an interest in history – this episode offers both a historical foundation and practical guidance for authentic Norse braided hairstyles. The Challenges of Medieval Warfare: Logistics, Transportation and Preparation
#middleages #warfare #history In this episode, Hendrik and Carmen show you the fascinating world of medieval military logistics – far removed from Hollywood clichés! While films only show the battles, we talk about what happened BEFORE: months of planning, complex supply chains and logistical masterpieces without modern technology. From assembling a lance with up to twelve people, to the challenges of horse transport, to William's Norman invasion of 1066 – we explore how knights coordinated their entire households, what quantities of feed and provisions had to be transported, and why more campaigns failed due to logistics than combat itself. Particularly fascinating: the transport of warhorses by sea and the bureaucracy of the Middle Ages with safe-conduct letters and toll receipts. Carmen shares her reenactment experiences and shows how challenging coordination is even with small groups. Learn why a cavalry horse needed ten kilos of hay daily, how Roman roads were still used centuries later, and why the invisible battle was often more decisive than the visible one. #middleages #history #culinaryhistory In this episode, Hendrik and Carmen show you how the servants in medieval knight's castles really lived and ate. Today we're diving into a culinary journey back to the High Middle Ages (11th-13th century) - away from the grand feast tables! You'll learn all about the three most important preservation methods (smoking, salting, drying) that were essential for survival, and how elaborate the preparation of dried meat really was. We look at the kitchen equipment of the time, explain why guests brought their own knives, and how status was displayed from wooden spoons to decorated ceramic plates. Particularly fascinating: medieval pies as the fast food of the era, and dishes like pork with sage sauce that peasants and knights alike would have known - but with completely different significance. Myths and Realities About Battles, Weapons and Armor in the Middle Ages
#medieval #history #warfare In this exciting episode, Hendrik and Carmen debunk the biggest myths about the Middle Ages! What Hollywood doesn't tell you about battles, armor and weapons, you'll find out here. From the true tactics of medieval battles to the surprising mobility of plate armor. We show you how medieval battles really unfolded - far removed from the chaotic slaughter in films like Braveheart. In reality, tactical thinking, patience and strategic maneuvering dominated the action. Shield walls held for hours, commanders waited for the perfect moment, and real casualties often only occurred during the pursuit of fleeing enemies. When it comes to armor, we dispel the myth of the immobile tin cans: a complete suit of plate armor weighed only 20-25 kilos and had perfect weight distribution. Trained knights could easily get up, run and even mount a horse - no crane required! And there are surprises with weapons too: swords weighed only 1.2-1.6 kilos and were often useless against armor. Instead, fighters relied on bludgeoning weapons, armor-piercing estocs and ranged weapons like longbows or crossbows. Enjoy, and see you next time! 😍 #armor #weapons #battles #medievalfair #reenactment #larp #history Battle-Merchant: https://www.battlemerchant.com/en/ Battle-Merchant Blog: https://www.battlemerchant.com/en/blog/ Blog post for this episode: https://www.battlemerchant.com/en/blog/myths-and-realities-about-battles-weapons-and-armor-in-the-middle-ages TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@battlemerchant Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/battlemerchant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/battlemerchant Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.de/battlemerchant/

The fascinating world of water supply in the Middle Ages
#middleages #watersupply #history In this episode, Carmen and Hendrik show you the fascinating world of medieval water supply! Let's forget the cliché of the dirty Middle Ages - the reality was much more impressive. From the 176-meter-deep castle wells of Kyffhausen Imperial Castle to the sophisticated monastery water systems of Maulbronn to the Augsburg Water Management System (UNESCO World Heritage): Medieval engineers developed innovative solutions for water distribution and quality. We dive into Roman aqueducts, medieval well types, and the impressive engineering of the Cistercians. Find out why the myth that "people only drank beer" isn't true and how cities like Nuremberg already had complex water pipeline systems in the 15th century. Whether draw wells, flowing wells, or kilometers-long wooden pipe systems - this episode shows that medieval water supply was anything but primitive. Some of these systems still work today!
