Grief + Grace
by Angela Ireland
Have you ever experienced a soul crushing loss? Was your world so shattered that even breathing hurt? Did you feel that God had failed you? Or that you might never recover from or be able to go on with your life?I have. On February 7, 2022, my life changed in the most unimaginable way, my eleven year old son, Ethan, my baby died unexpectedly. He was my heart. In the days that followed, I focused on what needed to be done making sure my daughter, his sister was supported, the funeral arrangements made, all of the necessary things were done. But in the days and weeks that followed, I had to face what my life had now become. In this podcast, I will share with you what grief looks like, but I will also show you what it looks like to journey through it to the other side. If you're still stuck, unable to move through what has hurt you so deeply, then I'm inviting you on this journey with me as we draw closer to Jesus and rise out of the ashes of grief to live a life filled with joy. 080: Fruit of the Spirit-Joy
Welcome back to a new season of the Grief + Grace Podcast. In this deeply personal episode, I share a life updarte that marks a major transition-both spirtually and practically. From an unexpected career ending after 28 years to stepping fully into my calling to prepare for a missionary journey to Ghana and a possible relocation to Rwanda- this season is one of obedience, faith and surrender. But this episode is not just about where I'm going. It's about who I'm becoming. Today we begin a new series on the Fruit of the Spirit, starting with joy- a word that can feel almost out of reach when you've experienced deep grief. So the question becomes: How do you experience joy... when your heart has been broken? What you'll learn in this Episode: Why grief and growth can coexist The truth about "unexpected" life transitions and divine timing How loss can become a release into purpose What it means to live in obedience- even when it stretches you Why the fruit of the Spirit must be cultivated before crisis A biblical definition of joy that goes beyond emotion How joy and grief can exist at the same time Key Takeaway: Joy is not the absence of grief- it is the presence of God in the midst of it. 079: Four Years Without My Son: Grief, Healing and Staying the Course
In this deeply personal episode of Grief + Grace, I reflect on what it means to live four years without my son, Ethan, as his 15th birthday approaches. I share updates on my physical recovery from recent shoulder surgery and draw parallels between physical healing and the long, sacred work of grief. This episode is an honest meditation on motherhood, loss, faith, guilt, hope, and the daily decision to stay the course as a Christian after devastating loss. I speak openly about grief shared with my daughter Emily, the comfort of believing Ethan is whole and at peace with God, and the courage it takes to continue living faithfully in an unfair world. This is an episode for anyone navigating life after loss, questioning their faith, or learning how to carry love forward when someone you cherish is no longer physically here. Topics Covered Life four years after child loss Remembering Ethan on what would have been his 15th birthday The emotional and spiritual parallels between physical healing and grief Parenting through grief and watching your surviving child find strength Faith, guilt, and hope after loss Choosing to live faithfully in an unfair world The courage to begin again and envision a future after profound loss Scripture Reflection "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18 Key Takeaway Grief does not disappear with time—but it does change us. Healing is not about becoming who we were before loss, but about becoming someone new who can carry both sorrow and hope at the same time. Listener Encouragement If you are walking through grief, please know this: you are not failing because it still hurts. Love doesn't end, and neither does the God who walks with us through the valley. You are allowed to heal at your own pace while still longing for what has been lost. 067:Joy in the Mourning
If you had told me in my deepest season of grief that joy was even a remote possibility, I might not have believed you. Joy and mourning feel like opposites. They feel like they exist in two different universes. But what if they can coexist? What if, as Psalm 30:5, states, "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." Today, we're not talking about getting over grief to find joy on the other side. We're talking about quiet, surprising and resilient ways that moments of joy, connection, and meaning can begin to weave themselves back into our lives while we are still actively grieving. This is about integration, not replacement. Resources & Links: shop.vitalhealthglobal.com/acireland Tiktok @the_native_southerner www.blueskiesareonthehorizon.com Email: [email protected]

066: When Will I Stop Grieving?
"If you've ever found yourself asking, 'When will this pain end?' or 'Is there something wrong with me because I'm still hurting?', you are not alone. That question is at the heart of every grieving person's experience." In today's episode, we're diving into one of the most common yet agonizing questions in the human experience: 'When will I stop grieving?' We'll explore why that's the wrong question to ask, and what to ask instead to find a path toward healing. This conversation is for anyone who has lost someone or something profoundly important to them. There is no judgment here, only space for understanding and compassion. We'll talk about the myths of timelines, the difference between grief and mourning, and how grief actually evolves over time, not disappears. 056: Establishing Your Roots
Welcome back to another episode of Grief plus Grace. Today we're discussing establishing our roots after grief. This is a bit of a continuation of episode 54, when we talked about how our homes don't feel like home after we have suffered a tremendous loss and because of that we can feel as though we're floating and not tethered to anything. What is different in today's episode, is that this week we are talking about anchoring ourselves in a such a way that we can heal by establishing our roots. Healing and anchoring ourselves should not be mutually exclusive but should operate in parallel. In other words, you can do both at the same time. Take a listen and let me know what you think. 054: Feeling At Home After Loss
Grief doesn't just affect our hearts; it changes the way we relate to our surroundings. A home that once felt warm and full of love can suddenly feel empty and unfamiliar. But home is not just a place, it's a feeling, a connection, a sanctuary. So, how do we reclaim our home and make it a place of comfort after our loved one dies? Today, on the podcast we discuss the way loss shifts how we see everything, including the spaces we live in. Every room may hold memories, and sometimes those memories bring pain instead of comfort. 053: The Things We Must Remember
Strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, "We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God." Acts 14:22 This verse is a perfect example of how you can read the Bible and find something that resonates with you every single time. In fact, I'm so surprised by how people can say or think the Bible is outdated or not relevant. I often think that is the reason why many Christians are lukewarm in their faith because they skip over the key verses like this one that we should probably read over and over again. Join me today as we discuss the Things We Must Remember as we journey through this life as Christians. 052: Memories Are Funny Things
On today's episode, I want to dive into the memories that flood our hearts on birthdays and how as time goes on the hurt lessens, so do the memories. Or they should when you allow yourself to feel the pain. When you walk right into it and allow it to penetrate every ounce of your body, the pain begins to fade. Memories on the other hand are funny things; there are times when events remain so vivid and clear and then there are other times when you can't for the life of you remember the date, where you were or the tiny details of that day or place. It almost feels unfair, like you're moving on with your life and forgetting what mattered. Then the guilt comes rushing in and you find yourself apologizing because you didn't want to forget, you can't forget, but somehow you do. *Correction: The scripture from the episode is Isaiah 40:8 Let's stay connected. 049:Three Tips to Overcome Sadness After Losing a Loved One During the Holiday Season
Welcome to back to Grief plus Grace , where we discuss navigating grief, one step at a time. This time of year is often really hard and so I wanted to revisit a topic that touches us all at some point: coping with the sadness that comes after losing a loved one. Grief is deeply personal and often overwhelming, but there are ways to help yourself move forward while honoring the person you've lost. In today's episode, I'll share three meaningful tips to help you through this journey." Acknowledge and Allow Your Grief Grief isn't something you can skip over or rush through. It's a process, and the first step is to let yourself feel. Why it's important: Bottling up emotions or trying to stay "strong" for others can backfire, leading to more pain later. Giving yourself permission to grieve is part of healing. Actionable idea: Set aside quiet moments to reflect. Journal about your emotions or talk openly with someone you trust. 038: What Daniel Taught Me About Grief
We're studying Daniel in Bible study at church this quarter and while there are so many lessons to be learned in the book of Daniel, I decided to focus on what he taught me about grief. Grief comes in different forms and can impact us all differently, however the message that I pray you will take home from today's episode is that no matter what type of grief you experience, God can still bless you and prosper you. He is always there and will never forsake you as long as you remain faithful to Him. Take a listen, perhaps there will be a few nuggets from this episode that resonates with you. 037: I'm Back!
Hello Friends! I'm back with an update and a fresh episode for you! Thank you for patience as I took the summer off to teach the Ladies Bible class at my church. While it was an honor to teach, it was quite the undertaking. Writing weekly lessons kept me very busy. I have to say that I'm so glad that I stepped up to the plate and pushed past my fear to serve in the Lord's kingdom. In fact, in today's episode, I share the lessons learned from the first class that I taught this summer and how it relates to grief. I hope you enjoy it! **Today's Sponsor is Hugh and Grace. 036:Taking Time To Rest
Today, I want to spend some time talking about rest and the importance of rest as you're grieving. I'm bringing this up because taking time to rest is not something that I do often enough. So as I am sharing with you today, I'm sharing with myself. In our culture resting is often not encouraged, we believe that everything has to be done right now. We as Americans try to use every waking moment to accomplish something, whether it's working, running to this activity or that or even staying busy at church. It's so out of control at my house, that my daughter asked me, " mom, what do we have to do this weekend." While I'm trying to teach my daughter to love the Lord, and to be busy in His kingdom, the one thing that I have failed to teach her is, how to rest, how to be still and sit quietly with your Bible and your thoughts. To listen to nature or nothing at all. I hope that you'll take to heart the simple steps that I share on how to prioritize rest and make it as much of your routine as staying busy. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Have you ever experienced a soul crushing loss?
