    5 Hour Rule

This took some practice, but I have it down now. However you want to carve out and spend an hour on you is up to you - there is no right way. But the benefits from investing time into yourself is well worth it.I've made a commitment to myself for this year to read every single day for a minimum of 20 minutes (most days I do a lot more). It has not only been enriching for me, but I generally look forward to it every day. I find myself excited to choose the next book I am going to read. Most important, I don't beat myself up if I read five pages or fifty. As long as I am consistent I feel great about it.I believe in you, You should too. I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 76: Lead On The Field!

Leading on the field starts well before the game begins. Here are three crucial tips for athletes as you prepare for game day:Preparation is Key: Before you even step onto the field, your preparation sets the tone. It’s about being mentally and physically ready for the game. This preparation involves understanding your game plan, conditioning your body, and mentally visualizing your performance. When you prepare thoroughly, you step onto the field with confidence and clarity.Give 100% Every Play: On the field, it's all about effort. You need to know, without a doubt, that you're giving everything you have in every single play. Consistency in effort is what sets apart good players from great ones. It's about pushing yourself to your limits and then going a bit further. This relentless commitment is what true leadership on the field looks like.Mind Your Body Language and Team Dynamics: Your body language speaks volumes, both when you're winning and especially when you're not. It's about how you carry yourself, how you interact with teammates, and how you respond to the ups and downs of the game. Remember, your attitude and behavior off the ball are just as important as when you're in play. They reflect your character and influence your team's morale and performance. These three aspects are fundamental for any athlete preparing for a game. It’s not just about what you do during the game, but also about how you prepare for it and how you conduct yourself throughout.I believe in your potential to excel in these areas and be an exemplary athlete on and off the field. I believe in your ability to prepare, perform, and present yourself as a leader. I believe in you. You should too.I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 75: Lead From The Bench!

Let's focus on a crucial aspect of team dynamics – how to lead effectively from the bench or sidelines when you're not actively in the game. Here are three key leadership tips for those moments:Massive Attention to Detail: Just because you're not on the field, ice, or court, doesn't mean your role is any less important. Stay acutely aware of what's happening in the game. You'd be surprised how much you can contribute from the sidelines. Your unique perspective can offer insights that coaches and playing teammates might miss. Remember, the more eyes on the game, the better the overall strategy.Support and Challenge Your Teammates: Keep an eye on your teammates' morale. If someone's feeling down, be there to lift them up. Encourage them, but also be ready to provide constructive challenges when needed. This kind of support is vital and can make a significant difference in a team's performance and spirit.Set the Standard for the Team: If you're a player who doesn’t get many reps or doesn't play often, your attitude and preparation set the tone for the entire team. By giving your all in every game, even when you're not playing, you exemplify the commitment and dedication expected from every team member. Recognize and support the players who embody this standard, and if that's you, know that your role is invaluable in setting the team's culture.Even from the bench, your leadership, awareness, and attitude can have a profound impact on the team's success. Whether you're playing or not, you have the power to influence and inspire.I have confidence in your ability to be an impactful leader from the sidelines. I believe in your capacity to make a difference in every role. I believe in you. Episode 74: Present Yourself As A Champion

Alright, let's talk about how to present yourself as a champion at all times, not just when you're on the field. Here are three key tips to help you embody the spirit of a champion in every aspect of your life.Be Present: This is fundamental. Champions have the unique ability to live in the present moment. Forget about what has happened or what might happen; focus on the now. What’s happening right in front of you and what you can control is what truly matters. This level of mindfulness is what separates the greats from the rest.Set High Standards: Whenever you step onto the field, into a practice session, or into the gym, carry with you a standard of excellence. Your standards should be lofty and unwavering. We've talked in other videos about setting these standards, but remember, they are the benchmarks that will guide your efforts and growth.Maintain Integrity: This is crucial. If you're not sure what integrity means, look it up, understand it, and live by it. Integrity is about what you do when no one else is watching. It's closely tied to your standards, but it speaks more to your character. Being a champion isn't just about your performance during the game; it's about who you are as a person, all the time.Remember, the essence of being a champion is about how you present yourself, both in the spotlight and behind the scenes. It's about staying present, holding yourself to high standards, and living with integrity every single day.I believe in your ability to embody these qualities and live like a champion, on and off the field. I believe in you. Episode 72: Being A Leader Away From The Field

Let's talk about the tools you need when you're not in the game – those times between practices, after the game, or on your off days. These moments are crucial for your growth as an athlete, and here are three key areas to focus on.Continuous Learning and Preparation: This is your foundation. Always strive to learn more about your sport and yourself. Dive into studying your craft, discovering new strategies, and refining your skills. It’s about taking that initiative to make practice plans for yourself, investing extra energy to push your boundaries. Your growth as an athlete doesn't pause just because you're off the field.Understanding Your Teammates: Team dynamics are essential. Take time to really get to know your teammates, and yes, even the ones you might not naturally gravitate towards. Understand what drives them, what challenges them, and how they operate both on and off the field. Building these relationships strengthens team cohesion and can drastically improve your collective performance.Physical Care and Nutrition: Your body is your tool, your instrument. Paying attention to what you’re putting into it and how you’re maintaining it is non-negotiable. Whether it’s your diet, your workout routines, or your rest periods, ensure you're doing everything to keep your body in top athletic form. This is about giving yourself the best chance to perform at your maximum ability, every time you step onto the field or court.Remember, being an athlete isn't just about what you do during the game or practice. It's also about how you prepare, connect, and care for yourself outside of those times. Master these three areas, and you're setting yourself up for success.I have faith in your ability to excel both on and off the field. I believe in your potential to be the best athlete you can be. I believe in you. Episode 71: The Impact Of Giving Back To The Community

This isn't just about playing your sport; it's about making a real difference. Let me share a personal story. Back in college, my coach took us to read to underprivileged youth in an inner city. That experience has stayed with me forever. When we talk about a team's identity, one of the most powerful things you can do is engage with your community. Whether you're a professional team, a college squad, or a youth group, stepping into your community and offering assistance can be transformative. It not only brings accountability to your community but also gives your team and athletes a deeper purpose to play for.You represent more than just your team; you're a part of the community you play in. Getting involved provides a sense of responsibility and a new perspective on the everyday challenges people face. It’s about understanding and contributing to the world outside your sport. This kind of community involvement is essential. It's not just about building a successful team in terms of wins and losses. It’s about growing as individuals, developing empathy, and learning how to contribute positively to society.I strongly believe in the power of community engagement for sports teams. It's a step towards not just being better athletes, but better people. I believe in your ability to make a difference in your community. I believe in you. Episode 70: Staying Even Keeled

Maintaining an even-keel, steady emotional state amidst the highs and lows of life and the game is crucial. Here are three strategies to help you achieve that balance.Control Your Controllables: This is a game-changer. In every situation, focus on what's in your control. Remember, you have power over three things – your mindset, your effort, and what you consume, both mentally and physically. By focusing on these, you can navigate any situation with a clearer, more composed perspective.Embrace Gratitude: Make gratitude a nightly ritual. Before you sleep, reflect on the positives in your life. It could be anything from family support to the simple joy of playing your sport. This practice aligns you with a mindset of appreciation, helping you end each day on a note of contentment and positivity.Live in the Moment: Being present is essential. Dwelling on the past or worrying about the future can throw you off balance. Learn from the past, plan for the future, but always live in the now. This present-focused approach keeps you grounded and fully engaged in the current moment.Mastering these three areas – focusing on what you control, practicing gratitude, and staying present – will help you maintain emotional stability, no matter what life or the game throws at you.I'm confident in your ability to implement these strategies and find that even-keel in your life. Remember, emotional balance is key to both personal and professional success. I believe in your potential to achieve this balance. I believe in you. Episode 69: Ask Your Team About Their Motivation

Coaches and leaders, let’s dive into a critical aspect of team success: motivation. How do you ignite that drive in your team? The answer might be simpler than you think. It all starts with one fundamental action: ask what gets them going. Yes, ask your players directly how they're motivated. It sounds too straightforward, yet it's a strategy often overlooked, from professional sports down to youth leagues.A common pitfall in coaching is assuming you know the best way to motivate every player. This assumption can lead to missteps. For instance, thinking that a louder voice or a tougher demeanor will automatically lead to motivation is a misconception. Every individual is wired differently, motivated by different factors. The most effective approach is to engage in open, honest conversations. Ask your players, “What motivates you?” Whether you're a coach, an athlete, or a team captain, these insights are invaluable. This simple question can reveal so much and guide you in tailoring your approach to each player’s needs.Remember, the key to unlocking your team's potential doesn’t lie in assuming you know everything. It lies in understanding and respecting the unique motivations of each individual in your team.I have confidence in your ability to connect with and understand your team on a deeper level. By taking the time to ask and listen, you can create a motivational strategy that resonates with everyone. Believe in the power of communication and empathy to drive your team forward. I believe in your ability to be a great leader. I believe in you. You should too.I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 68: Don't Fear Failure

Let's tackle a truth often overlooked: Mistakes are simply proof that you're trying. This is something I firmly believe in – the most successful people on Earth have failed more times than anyone else. They've faced more setbacks than you or I could imagine. And that's exactly why they've reached the heights they have. Here's the deal: if you're not prepared to risk failure, to embrace it as a learning opportunity, moving forward becomes a challenge. Don't let the fear of failure hold you back. Instead, redefine what success and failure mean to you. It's not about meeting society's conventional benchmarks – the job, the house, the wealth – those standards set by some magazine. That's not real success.True success is personal. It's about figuring out what it means to you and relentlessly pursuing it. That journey will involve failures, but remember, each failure is a lesson, a chance to grow, and a step closer to your version of success.Don't shy away from taking risks or fear the possibility of failing. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it as a fuel to propel you towards your goals.I believe in you. You should, too. I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 67: Discipline

In the world of sports and beyond, the term 'discipline' carries enormous weight. But let's get one thing straight – discipline is not a sometimes thing; it's an always thing. It's a relentless commitment, not an occasional convenience. When your team embraces discipline as a non-negotiable, in every game, every practice, every single moment, that's when true greatness begins to take shape.Think about it. Those big championship moments, those high-stakes games – they don't just test your skill, they test your discipline. It's not a magic trick that suddenly appears in crucial games. It's the result of consistent, dedicated practice. Discipline practiced in the quiet, unseen moments is what shines in the spotlight of the big games. Here's the key: start practicing discipline now. Make it a part of your daily routine, in both small tasks and significant challenges. Embed it so deeply into your team's DNA that when those championship moments arise, discipline is second nature, an ally that stands strong under pressure. So, whether you're on the field, in the gym, or navigating the complexities of life, let discipline be your guiding force. It's more than a strategy; it's a mindset, a lifestyle.Make discipline your secret weapon, your unwavering partner on the road to success. I believe in you, you should too.I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 66: Selecting A Business Leader

When it comes to selecting a manager or a leader within your organization, especially if you're at the helm, there are a few key qualities that you simply can't compromise on. The first one? Crystal-clear communication. I can't stress this enough – the root of almost every problem in a team is poor communication. If your leader can't communicate effectively, you’re setting up the whole team for failure.Next, look for someone who genuinely cares about the people in the team, not just the end product. This is about servant leadership – leading from the back and understanding that you're there to support your team, not just direct them. In my experience, leaders who prioritize their team's well-being and foster strong relationships are the ones who truly make a difference.Lastly, don’t overlook the importance of responsibility and accountability. A great leader should be ready to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty when needed. Whether it’s stepping in during a team member's absence or compensating for a shortfall, they need to be as capable as anyone they're leading. This understanding of accountability ensures that your leader isn’t just a figurehead, but a true part of the team.To sum it up, when you’re on the lookout for a leader, focus on these three essentials: clear communication, a people-first approach, and solid accountability. These are the hallmarks of a leader who can not only steer your team towards success but also cultivate a positive and productive environment.I believe in your ability to find the right leader who can transform the dynamics of your team. Remember, the right leader can make all the difference. Believe in your choice, and they will prove you right. IT is the level of competitiveness, attention to detail, ethics, standards, and intensity someone brings to the table. It's really simple, the more you practice operating at that level, the better you will get and the more prepared you will be for big, game-changing moments.Don't just save your best effort for practices and games; turn it on most, if not all the time.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Jinxed! Gone Cold! Can't buy a goal! However you slice it, the Yips are hell! When you have the yips, sometimes your mind may discourage you from trying things like meditation or other practices you're not used to. Don't listen to it. I firmly believe the key to getting out of any slump is to get as present as possible.I also believe that the quality of questions you ask yourself during this time are equally important."Why am I not playing well?" or "Why am I screwing up?" are not great questions."What actions can I take mentally or physically to change my rhythm?" and "What can I control in this situation?" are better. If you're experiencing the yips - just know - it will pass. Episode 63: Ying Yang

Ever have someone tell you that you, “need to find balance”?Sounds easy when you say it, but the truth is balance is often misinterpreted as calmness or all being right with the world.Balance is the ability to take the good, the bad, and everything in-between and to find the common ground where they all play a part in your life.Balance is like a see-saw; sometimes you can control the ups and downs, other times you can’t. But the more you ride, the easier it is to find the balance point. You cannot feel happiness if you don’t understand sadness. You cannot feel excitement if you do not understand heartbreak. You cannot succeed if you do not fail. All of these have a place in life. Accepting that and embracing that will help you find balance.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Parkinson’s law has helped me a lot.Very simple, if you say you want to have something done in 3 hours you’ll get it done in three hours - if you say the same job will take 12 hours, it will take 12 hours. Now it’s not always true, but when I set deadlines for myself I tend to meet them or get a lot further ahead than I would have if I didn’t set them. You are capable of more than you think you are. Episode 61: Lessons From The Yellow Pages

What do the yellow pages have to do with sports? Everything. For 100 years the yellow pages were the go-to source and gold standard if you needed to find a business. The result was the yellow pages becoming a multi-hundred billion dollar industry. Then, at the turn of the last century, a little player named Google entered the game. Within a decade, the century old giant was a shadow of itself while Google became one of the most profitable companies of all time, while the Yellow pages is now worth less than a hundred million. It seemed that over night we went from saying. "Look it up in the yellow pages" to "google it."The moral of the story? Don't ever rest on what you "know" is the standard. Always be on the look out and be open to new innovations and advancements in your space. NEVER sit still.Rear Admiral Grace Harper famously said, "The most dangerous phrase in the English language is 'We've always done it this way." Episode 60: Work Your Ass Off

Love what you do, and you will work EVERY day of your life. While there is truth in saying, "Love what you do and you won't work a day in your life.", it sets an unrealistic expectation on what it takes to make a dream come true.If you have a passion or a dream, you will do whatever it takes to bring that dream to fruition. That sometimes means a lack of sleep, that sometimes means pushing through when you're tired, that sometimes means losing friends that are bringing you down, and that sometimes means being very lonely. If you aren't willing to sacrifice a lot to get to where you want to be, that's OK too - but you have to be OK with the result.I challenge you to analyze your situation and ask yourself if the people and processes in your life are helping you get to where you want to be. Episode 59: Character Matters To Your Coaches

Character is something that we all own individually. While the development of character is built over time and from many factors (parenting, environment, experience, who you hang out with), owning it is up to you.The easiest way to examine your own character is to ask the question, “What actions do I take when no one is looking?” Whether you like the answer or not, don’t judge yourself too heavily. Simply pivot or stay on course with the type of person you want to be. Practice makes progress.Happy Gilmore is silly, but he has tremendous character, and he was always willing to put the work in to become better (no matter how painful it might be).I believe in you, you should too.I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 57: Mandatory Fun Isn't Doing What You Think Its Doing

Groups that practice this have an incredibly higher rate of success. More importantly, they have a highly boosted state of morale. Team building is often mistaken for having a group meal or a planned, “voluntold” time to be together. In other words, “mandatory fun” We need to rethink what “team building” is. Team building should be the process of guiding your group members toward a common belief that they all share and buy into. Something that gives them purpose, community, and identity. Something that when they wake up in the morning, there is a reason to get out of bed. We are facing a real problem in our society today with this. The ability to create this kind of belief is the true process of team building. It increases morale, performance, and, most importantly, your bottom line.I have been blessed for the past 20 years to work with teams to help them find their full potential and then, most importantly, maintain it. It is a process that must be molded for each group individually and nurtured over time.If you are serious about winning, however you define that word, Invest the time into team building.DM me if you want to find out more, or let’s hop on a call to discuss how to build this for your team!I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 56: What To Do When You're Not Getting Along With Your Coach

We all go through bad seasons. They are inevitable. It's so important that when these years do happen, you see them as an opportunity for yourself to grow.If you are not getting along with a coach, take these actions:1. Try to open a line of communication. Establish trust and ask for point-blank feedback (Know where you stand)2. Analyze your behavior and ask if you are doing anything to create the rift.3. Focus on what you can control and be the best teammate and version of yourself to YOUR standards.None of these are "fun" to do - but they are necessary. They will help you grow. Not all lessons reveal themselves immediately - patience is key.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 55: How Diversity On A Team Is Impacted By A Strong Bond

For some reason this is still a touchy subject…Most people are afraid or confused by what they don’t understand. I believe one of the largest problems we have today is that lack of awareness to our own inexperience. While it is impossible to see the world through someone else’s eyes, we can discuss and have conversations to better understand how they see the world. That saying, “Knowledge is power” is very true.Today, quick judgement seems to be the default response for every situation. I wish it would be curiosity. If I don’t know something, it’s not a threat to me - if anything, it makes me want to learn. When creating a team bond - trust and communication are two of my foundations. We create the environment where conducive conversations can take place so that we can learn to understand each other deeper than on the surface. I regularly hear, “I didn’t know that about you.” and “I’ve never experienced that.” The result is a deeper understanding of each other as people, a breakdown of stigmas, and a much more bonded team ready to take the steps towards winning together. If you are looking to create an environment like this, DM me or visit the link in my profile.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 54: The Effect Of A Team Bond On Individual Perfomance

Team Bonds naturally improve individual performance. One of the beautiful things about a bonded team, is the organic creation of purpose for teammates to look after and work hard for one another. Maximum performance in a team environment I not possible if a teammate isn’t giving their best for the team AND themselves.GREAT teammates make everyone around them better. GOOD teammates just do their part well. Imagine the power of ALL teammates working to be at their best and to make everyone around them better…The results are typically extremely favorable for everyone involved. If you are looking to create an environment like this, DM me or visit the link in my profile.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 53: Lean Into What Makes You Uncomfortable

How do you make being uncomfortable, comfortable? It is absolutely normal to avoid discomfort and failure. That's our basic survival instincts kicking in, but there's a level beyond that we can all tap into.I learned this from watching a documentary of the Navy Seals going through hell week at BUD/S. The candidates are put through mental and physical training that push them to their absolute limit as a human. Most do not pass - but some always do. In watching this, and similar training that other branches of our military go through, I realized that I don't even know my own limits as a person - so I decided to challenge them. I took the mindset that if these young men and women can go through this for a higher calling, I can honor them by doing it in my life too.I started to identify situations that made me uncomfortable and some that even scared me and then contemplated how I could lean into them to learn something. An example: I was once asked to be the keynote to an entire middle school on career day. I don't know what middle school was like for you, but it was a very uncomfortable and weird time for me for many reasons. I thought, "I don't want to do that." Then I stopped. I got curious. Why don't I want to do it? (Because of my own experience in middle school, which has nothing to do with these kids) What can I learn from it? (How middle school kids will react to my message) What do I lose if it goes bad? (Maybe momentary embarrassment - not much else) After answering those questions, I called the school and said yes.As you can imagine, it went fantastic. The kids loved the message and even stopped me in the hall to tell me. Beyond that, I had a new perspective on how I want to impact youth and youth athletes. I also probably heeled some childhood trauma I didn't even know I still had.I gained all that by taking a few minutes to challenge myself. The more I started doing that, the better I got (Practice makes progress). Today I'm at a point where I get almost excited when I get uncomfortable - because it means I will earn something and gain a new perspective.Do not be afraid to challenge yourself! Learn how to lean in.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 52: Sports Beyond Playing

Looking back, I was EXTREMELY blessed to have two great professional loves in my life in hockey and broadcasting. I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue both and, if possible, merge them together. While there were times in my career that the see-saw would tip more towards one profession than the other (or sometimes I was off the ride all together), it was all part of the journey towards where I am at today - in a place where I get to do what I love.Lean into what you love, if you are passionate enough, you will find a way. I believe in you, you should too!Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 51: Patience

Patience is a virtue! It’s true. The thought of being patient isn’t always easy. But what I have learned to respect is the tremendous outcomes that are gifted through patience. In my life, I have found that when I rush or drag my feet (or leave the present moment), that is when most mistakes or unfavorable outcomes tend to live. When I am patient and analyze a situation, good things tend to happen.Another interesting thing about patience that they don’t tell you is that there isn’t a time limit. Being patient can be anything from taking a few seconds to think something over to taking years to make a decision. It’s all relative in the eye of the beholder. At the end of the day, taking a moment for a breath is never a bad idea!I believe in you, you should too. Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Slumps in sport and life typically last because we aren’t asking ourselves and each other the right questions.Great questions demand great answers. Here’s a few great ones (from Coach Todd Bowles) you should take into consideration if you or someone you know is going through a slump:Do you know your job inside and out?How good do you want to be?How much did it take for you to get here? How much will you lose when you leave here? How hungry are you?I believe in you, you should too!Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 49: Quick Team Bonding Tip

You don't need much to create a team building exercise.Physical metaphors for team building are some of my favorite things to do when working with a team. For that reason I keep an arsenal of drills to do with my teams weekly throughout the season.More often than not, the drills seem like easy, mundane tasks that should take very little time to complete. However when you add in 20 personalties, voices, brains and abilities into the mix, it can get much harder.Working together is not easy - but knowing how to work together makes everything else easy. This is why we must take the time to create cohesive team bonds within our groups and communities. As I say in the video above, I really love drills where the team can set their own goals, strive to achieve them, and then set higher goals. Failure is a very real possibility with these drills, but guess what, it's also a very real possibility in life. Preparing for those moments and knowing how to respond together is how you create champions.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 48: How To Approach Being Nervous In Big Moments

Nervousness is part of the game; you can train for it like most things.Emotion and sports have always been tied together. While some deal with the nerves that come in high-tension moments by burying them or shutting off their emotions altogether, I take the approach of getting very in touch with them, calling them out, and getting as present as I can in the moment.Like most anxiety, when you feel it, you are most likely stuck in a moment from the past or are stuck contemplating the future. Neither of those two places is reality - right now is reality. If you are feeling something in the pit of your stomach, acknowledge that you are feeling it and call it out, then ask yourself, "What do I control within this situation?" and "What can I do right now in the present moment to effect the outcome."Your brain may fight you on this - that's why it's important to practice being present as often as possible. That way, when you feel the pit of your stomach tighten, you have the tools to mentally unravel the beast and perform to the best of your ability.I believe in you, you should too!Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 47: Center Yourself

For the past ten years, I have practiced being present as much as possible. I fail often! When I started doing the exercises I talk about in this video, I could barely get through two minutes without my mind wandering uncontrollably.I would get pissed at myself for not being able to stay focused.Through practice and instruction, I realized that our mind's wandering is a completely normal and human thing to do. I stopped judging myself and began to focus on noticing when my mind would wander, then gently bring myself back to the present. This is where a breakthrough came in over my command of present-moment awareness. The more I practiced bringing myself back to being present, the better I got at it.Now when I find myself focusing too much on the past or the present or things I cannot control, I am able to realize it and snap myself back to the present quickly. Even with that said, I still fail at this daily, but I fail with grace and give myself permission to be patient with this journey and get better every day. Give yourself that same gift - you are worth it!I believe in you, you should too!Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 46: Having A Role Is More Important Than Having A Job Title

Having a role is more important than having a job title.I’ve seen many young people identify and obsess over the job title on their business card. With our companies & teams, we wanted to change that, so we tried something different.Unless required for an event, call, or another reason, we don’t have distinct job titles at our place of business - we have roles. Each person who works with me or plays for me has a clear understanding of our vision and mission and their role in helping to achieve that. There is also a clear understanding of how other people within the group operate to accomplish the collective goals we have set. Long story short - we have “Buy In”.The result? Loyal, hard-working, and inspired TEAMMATES who I know are striving right next to me to accomplish our goals.Even when someone decides to move on to another job or opportunity, I want them to part knowing they had a great experience with us, learned something with us, and will pass it on to others. We are all in the people business whether we want to admit it or not. As athletes, we all know the feeling of “being in the zone.” But did you know this is something you can practice?“The zone” is nothing more than complete present moment awareness. You are not worried about the future or the past, but what’s right in front of you.Present moment awareness is something you can practice in your daily life through many different methods including meditation, focusing on an object, listening to music intently, or even just acknowledging your surroundings during a walk or drive. The more you practice it the more you will improve your ability to access it.Give yourself permission to be patient with your practice of this. Episode 43: Are You Impatient About Your Career?

Hard work creates opportunity and results, restlessness creates stress and anxiety.I used to think restlessness, or the need to find excitement in many activities, was an ally. In my 20’s, the result of this thinking was often working two full-time jobs and throwing projects on top of those to “get ahead”. Now don’t get me wrong, hard work was an asset. Those years allowed me to gain lots of experience that would come to help me down the line - but at what cost?I realized that restlessness was a problem during my down times. I could not relax. I always had to find the “next” thing to do. I was being productive, right? This all came to a head when my children were young and I realized I was actively looking for work to do at night. Sometimes it was due to an unjustified need to stay busy, and other times I was subconsciously trying to avoid the challenges of raising a toddler. One night I was in my office and I realized I generally missed my kids (who were downstairs). That’s when it clicked. I stood up from my desk and went downstairs and spent time with them. From that day forward I made a pact with myself that, when possible, I would spend as much time presently focused with my kids as I could. How does this apply to being patient at work? Hard work and restlessness are not the same things - but in my 20’s (and prob younger) I couldn’t separate the two. Had I known what I know now, I could have continued to work hard while choosing projects more carefully. I also would have allowed for more time with family, friends, and personal development. I would have calmed my mindset down thus saving me a lot of stress. With all this said, I believe there are people younger than me that understand this and I believe there are people older than me who don’t. This is just when I discovered it on my journey and I wanted to pass it on to anyone that needed to hear it. Like most things we speak about here, it’s something that I still work on today - practice makes progress, not perfection.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 38: The Perfect Moment is Now - Seize It and Make It Happen

We're all guilty of it at some point – waiting for that 'perfect' moment to kickstart our goals. Whether it's in sports, business, personal life decisions like having kids, or even starting a workout routine, we often wait for the right time. But here's a truth bomb: the perfect moment is right now.In my experience, both in sports and business, I've seen countless individuals delay action, waiting for ideal conditions. But here's the thing – these 'ideal' conditions are a myth. The right moment is the one you're living in. If you've got a goal or a dream you're pondering over, the time to act on it is immediately. This isn't just about physical action; it's a mental practice too. Many people need to learn to execute and push forward to achieve their goals. Remember, the biggest hurdles are often in your mind. If you're thinking about it now, that's your cue. Don't wait. Don't make excuses about being at work, at school, or anywhere else. As soon as you have the opportunity, take action.I hear it often, "It's not that easy, you don't understand." But trust me, I do. I've been there, in that moment of hesitation, more times than I can count. But once you take that first step, you learn how to do it, and then you can keep moving forward.I may sound a bit harsh today, but this is the push you need. Get up, get out there, and start working towards what you want. And most importantly, believe in yourself while you do it. I believe in your ability to seize the moment and make it count. Episode 37: Overcoming A Victim Mentality

When I was young, I struggled with a victim mentality. Teasing, problems, and a constant worry about others' opinions weighed heavily on me. However, a pivotal shift happened around middle school when I decided to stop worrying about these external judgments.I began to work tirelessly, focusing solely on my efforts, not fearing judgment. This change in attitude led to a profound transformation. My hard work and dedication to practice started attracting others. My peers began joining me, drawn by my commitment and perseverance. Together, we achieved remarkable things. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: the moment I let go of the fear of others' opinions—whether it was my teammates, friends, or even family—I discovered a new level of potential. More importantly, I became a source of inspiration for them.Remember, if you're being mocked or ridiculed, you're already one step ahead because you've faced your fears. Episode 36: You Are Not Defined By Your Sport

It's a profound realization I had, one that took far too long to dawn on me: I am not defined solely by the sport I play. Yes, I choose to be involved in that sport, to play, work, and dedicate a significant part of my life to it. But it is just that - a part, not the whole. This eye-opening moment reshaped my perspective. I see many young athletes defining themselves solely by their athletic identity, saying, "I am an athlete from this sport." But that's not all who you are. In sports, so much is left to chance, officiating, factors beyond your control. You are more than the outcome of a game or a performance on the field.Instead, identify yourself by the roles that truly define you - a good person, a hard worker, a brother, a sister, a cousin, a mother, a father. These roles reflect your core, your essence. Your family, your friends - these relationships are crucial in understanding who you are.Start with who you are as a person. Then, extend that identity to other aspects of your life, whether it's sports, your career, or any other pursuit. But never lose sight of the fact that you are more than something largely out of your control. You are a complex, multifaceted individual with values, beliefs, and relationships that define you.Identify as yourself first. Discover what is truly important and valuable to you. Episode 35: Redefining Success in Life and Sports: A Lesson from Gordie Howe's Career

When Hockey legend Gordie Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his signing bonus wasn't a check with many zeros; it was a team jacket. This anecdote resonates with my own experiences in sports and beyond. When I first joined a team, my reward, much like Howe's, was a team jacket. This jacket, which I've held onto for over a decade, is more than a piece of clothing. It's a symbol of belonging, achievement, and a significant milestone in my journey.Success isn't just about financial stability or prestigious titles. Sure, money is a necessity of life, but it's fleeting. In contrast, symbols like team jackets from our sports careers or any other field represent something enduring and profound. They are reminders of our paths, our growth, and our true accomplishments.Join us as we dive into how to identify and cherish those elements in your life that truly signify success. It's about finding value in the experiences, the learnings, and the milestones that shape us. Episode 34: Controlling Risk

You have to take risks if you want to succeed. The secret is that these should be calculated risks, and they are something you can practice and prepare for. Taking a risk is the equivalent of jumping off a cliff. No matter what kind of risk it is, it’s gonna be scary and there is ALWAYS a chance you might not make it. WITH THAT SAID, the key to taking risks effectively is to “prepare for the jump”.When younger, I would often leap without looking. While I made some big strides doing that, I also had some big falls. But with that experience I also started to learn what to look for. Metaphorically - studying the cliff or the jump in every direction, thinking about potential outcomes, perhaps most importantly looking at where I might land. All of these play into whether or not I’m going to take the risk.At the end of the day, the only way to get good at taking calculated risks, is to take them and learn. One must also keep in mind that what may be a small risk to one person, may be a gigantic one to another. It’s not on anyone to judge someone’s distance, but to support them in pursuing their right to have a goal.I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. It’s a small thing we can all do to leave this place better than we found it.I believe in YOU, your friends, your family, your team, and the power of belief in each other, and you should too.Tune into this micro podcast for bite size perspectives on trust, teamwork and life that will inspire and motivate you daily. Episode 33: Championship Moments

I don't have many trophies in my office; I have many photos of teams I have been a part of in championship moments. It's a special time, the seconds after a championship. It's the culmination of a group of people coming together to accomplish a common goal. It's a time when miracles are possible. As wonderful as it feels, it will pass. Over time I've come to realize that the process of creating those moments is as much a gift as the championship itself. The ability to compete - to strive - to drive - to win - to fail - to learn; is a privilege, dare I say a gift, that I don't take for granted anymore. If you are on that path - embrace it.If you aren't - find a path worth taking!I believe in you, you should too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 32: Blame Eloquently

Transitioning from blame to recognizing opportunities is a skill crucial in both sports and personal development. This journey from blaming to learning is about seeing challenges not just as setbacks, but as invaluable lessons. In my own life, I've encountered numerous instances where I felt wronged or deeply hurt. However, with time and reflection, I realized that these moments were, in fact, opportunities for growth and learning. When adversity hits, it's often hard to see any positive outcome, especially in the heat of the moment. But the ability to retrospectively look back, not with a finger-pointing attitude but with an eagerness to learn, is what sets apart growth from stagnation. This approach is applicable in all areas of life, from sports performance to personal relationships. It's about learning to blame eloquently. Each challenging situation, whether it's a tough game loss or a personal setback, carries a lesson. The trick is to find that lesson and use it to propel yourself forward. After all, if you're not moving forward, you're standing still.By mastering this skill, you not only enhance your sportsmanship but also your personal growth and emotional intelligence. Embrace this shift in perspective and watch how it transforms your approach to life's challenges.I have complete confidence in your ability to turn even the most difficult situations into opportunities for growth. I believe in you, you should, too.Share this episode with someone who you think should hear it, and let others know that you believe in them when deserved. Episode 31: Apply Your Passion Wherever You Need!

Are you feeling pigeonholed, limiting your identity to just a single facet like a sport or a hobby? Understandably, devoting yourself to a passion is fulfilling. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge that your identity encompasses more than this singular focus. This is a vital step in personal development and self-improvement.This epiphany struck me in my twenties, a transformative period, when I ventured outside my comfort zone. I channeled the passion and discipline from my athletic endeavors into an entirely new field. The outcome was more than just success; it was a revelation.Similarly, you hold immense potential within. The skills and mindset you've developed, perhaps in sports, hobbies, or any dedicated pursuit, have broader applications. They're not just for personal hobbies or sports excellence; they're tools for life success. Envision applying that same intensity and dedication across various aspects of your life, be it career development, personal hobbies, or creative ventures. The growth you'll experience can mirror the vastness of the universe.Your potential isn't limited to just one area of your life. Trust in your ability to transcend conventional boundaries and redefine success.I believe in your boundless potential and your capacity for achieving personal success.
