Next, I explore the creation of boundaries that align with our values. I introduce a three-step process for being present: Notice, Observe, and Workaround (N.O.W.). The episode concludes with a guided exercise, inviting listeners to imagine a calm and relaxed place and engage in activities aligned with their values and goals. We dive into Robyn's journey of transitioning from a traditional ABA company to starting her own private practice as a Behavior Analyst. Robyn openly shares her thoughts, fears, and what she deems essential in this process. As we listen, we witness Robyn's strengths in psychological flexibility, employing techniques like noticing and naming, expressing gratitude to her brain, visualization, and self-compassion. During the session, we pinpoint fear as the predominant emotion that surfaces, leading Robyn towards overplanning and pulling her away from being present. To tackle this, we engage in a perspective-taking exercise. Please note that prior consent was obtained, and Robyn is not a current client but a volunteer for today's episode. We will be featuring more "Insight Episodes" in the future. If you'd like to experience ACT and are willing to share your time on the show, here is a link for us to connect: https://l.bttr.to/gsebP For BCBA professionals interested in learning ACT, here are some crucial moments to review: 2:20: Assessing Robyn's values and motivations in the transition process. 3:30 - 5: Robyn's identification of her own barriers (thoughts, feelings, and emotions). 6:00: Robyn describes her coping strategies during challenging times, showcasing effective skills like noticing and naming difficult emotions or thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and shifting from perfectionism to "good enough." However, we observe that fear remains a predominant emotion, leading to overplanning and perfectionism. 11:00: We embark on an experiential exercise. By reframing the process of noticing and naming through storytelling, we explore acceptance and self-compassion through perspective-taking. We hope you enjoyed this episode format. In between Season 1 and Season 2 - I’ll be putting out mini episodes of things that help connect you to the last process of ACT - which is Commitment! So each week, you’ll get a small dose of questions to help you in your commitment to things that are important to you! Ok that’s a wrap! If you’re looking for ways to support, consider signing up for my newsletters and emails, subscribing to the podcast, and/or becoming a Bold & Balanced Member, for continuing education content for Behavior Analysts! For those BCBAs that are listening Lisa & I will be hosting our very first retreat called Balanced & Becoming, which is focused on the wellbeing of BCBAs and their clinical self-care.
