Farmworker Challenges: Healthcare Access, Justice, Child Resilience
In our conversation with Dr. Miguel Ambriz, we dive into the various barriers that farmworkers face. He focused on three main topics of discussion, farmworkers' restricted access to healthcare, the reasons why they rarely take a day off, the challenges that accompany women's sexual harassment and sexual assault testimonios combined with workplace oppression. Dr. Ambriz also commented on the immigrant farmworker children and legal resiliency despite the many obstacles they face.

Gender-Based Violence across the Americas
Dra. Lydia Huerta introduces our audience to her new book, Mourning and Mobilization: The Affective Politics of Women Killings. Dra. Huerta elaborates on the issue of gender-based violence and the relationship between grief, social media and the advocacy that lead to eventual political action. Although the audience may be familiar with the murders of women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Mourning and Mobilization goes beyond Mexico and the United States. Dra. Huerta explains that a society in which girls and women are devalued produce environments where femicides occur in such large numbers that they're diffult to adequately track.

Socio-Legal History of Child Migration to the United States - Dra. Ivón Padilla-Rodríguez
Dra. Ivón Padilla-Rodríguez is an alumna from the University of Nevada, Reno. She currently works at the University of Illinois Chicago where she specializes in child migration to the United States. Dra. Padilla-Rodríguez is currently working on a book manuscript which has given her the opportunity to collaborate with organizations in both the United States and Mexico. Through her in-depth research she has found records, long-neglected, about the treatment of migrant families upon arriving to the U.S. and she explores concepts such as the "school-to-deportation" pipeline and how this is tied to a person's "alienage" in the United States.

Dr. Raúl Fregoso Bailón: Knowledge creation among educators
On this episode of Latino Insights, Dr. Fregoso Bailón talks with us about the value in seeing educators as creators of knowledge. The joint research with the Latino Research Center seeks to collect narrative pieces from educators of all levels in an effort to showcase the teachers themselves but also the work they produce as they instruct students. Dr. Fregoso Bailón poses the idea that educators are also philosophers. Take a listen!

Latino Housing Security and Mental Health
In Nevada and in the entire United States data about Latino Housing Security has been close to non-existent. Dr. Jessie Clark explains how a study done in collaboration with Dr. Julie Lucero and Ms. Victoria Rios, and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has shed some light on Latinos, their housing arrangements and how these affect their mental health. Dr. Clark's background in cultural and political geography has taken her all over the world and for this study, her experience provides a unique perspective.

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's: A Conversation with Dr. Rubén Dagda
Dr. Dagda shares how his team's research is on the front lines of the fight to cure Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In the United States, approximately 6.7 million people live with Alzheimer's disease and over 1 million people have been diagnosed with Parkinson's. According to research, there is some crossover between certain proteins in models and cell cultures for both diseases.

U.S. & México Borderlands with Dr. Michael Aguirre
Dr. Michael Aguirre is an Assistant Professor within the Department of History, here at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is a historian of the United States, Mexican-American and Latina/o/x history, and the U.S.-México Borderlands. Dr. Aguirre shares an abbreviated history of the U.S./México Borderlands and several of the U.S. Government policies that have impacted immigrants, primarily from Central America, México and South America. He also reflects on his experiences living and traveling between the U.S./México Border.

Insights from GEAR UP Research with Dr. Jafeth Sanchez
On today's episode we discuss some important findings from a recent publication concerning GEAR UP students. Dr. Jafeth Sanchez, Director of the Latino Research Center, recently published a new article titled: Gleaning into the Aspirational-Pursuit Gap of GEAR UP Students. This research consists of an exploratory analysis of program evaluation outcomes. We discuss some findings in this episode, including the predominant representation of Hispanic/Latinx backgrounds among GEAR UP students. Additionally, we explore some of the personal experiences endured by Dr. Jafeth Sanchez in her own path to higher education.
