Michael Idell
It seems problems start developing or can after brain injuries occur and it is quite interesting to see the aches and pains can correlate to those injuries as well Studies show that more than 50 percent of people suffer from chronic pain disorders in the years following a brain injury. Headaches and neuropathic (nerve-related) pain is most commonly from injury to the head and neck. Other common sources of pain include spasticity(increased muscle tension from brain injury), heterotopic ossification (bone forming outside the skeleton), deep venous thrombosis, genitourinary and gastrointestinal disorders, and orthopedic trauma (ie, fractures and other muscle and bone injuries). The head is the most common location of pain. Interestingly, people with milder brain injury have higher rates of complaints of headaches when compared to those with moderate and severe brain injury. The reason for the higher rates of headaches with milder severity brain injury is not well understood. Doctors can effectively treat pain by identifying it, quantifying it, reviewing the history of the person’s pain, and understanding how it limits function. Memory and language problems may limit effective communication for some people with TBI, increasing the complexity of evaluation of where the pain is coming from. A careful evaluation including discussion with other treating clinicians and family members may be required is some cases for effective evaluation. Patients with TBI may be even more vulnerable than other patients to the cognitive side effects of certain pain medications. Because of this, the use of non-sedating analgesics (eg, acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and transdermal lidocaine patches) should be a first line in treating pain in patients with TBI. PTSD - Brain Injury Communication with Host Michael Idell (recorded)
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. PTSD Definition By Mayo Clinic Staff Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Many people who go through traumatic events have difficulty adjusting and coping for a while, but they don't have PTSD — with time and good self-care, they usually get better. But if the symptoms get worse or last for months or even years and interfere with your functioning, you may have PTSD. Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please read: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Judith_Herman/publication/240129278_Complex_PTSD_A_syndrome_in_survivors_of_prolonged_and_repeated_trauma/links/54af023c0cf29661a3d43964.pdf

Brain Injury Communication w/host Michael Idell - HBOT Therapy
What is HBOT? Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is breathing 100% oxygen while under increased atmospheric pressure. There have been debates over whether this treatment works, and information needed about insurance coverage for this treatment. Facts are the results are phenominal! We will be discussing facts and sharing links to resources for individuals and families to learn where to go along with education. This call is being recorded for FCC purposes and for sharing with others in the future. Please call in and be patient with ohers in the brain injury community to speak their part. Brain Injury Communication - Michael Idell - Who Needs A Place to Vent?
Who needs a place to vent when they won't be judged??? WE ARE HERE!! It is unlikely that there is a typical developing individual who has never had a tantrum of some sort or an irrational behavior, who has not balked at being separated from a loved one or been fed up about circumstances they are dealt with . Rarer still are people who are never moody or withdrawn, aggressive or antisocial, argumentative or oppositional. It is typical of anyone to retreat or respond negatively or aggressively to situations that are new, frightening, or beyond their understanding. _____________ Why is this unacceptable behavior for a person surviving a brain injury? Why is it culturally acceptable for someone to be this way but when an individual with a neurological impairment, it becomes an excuse this person is acting irrational? Why should this person be judged based on his or her disability? Why can't this be looked at as a normal behavior by someone who was mistreated somehow? _______________ Are you a brain inury survivor and don't know who to turn to? Are you a caregiver who can't get any support? Are you a parent of someone with special needs and cant find someone who understands? WE ARE HERE! Brain Injury Communication - Michael Idell - You can't live without medication?
Many people think they can not get by in life without medications. Rightfully so, some may be medically needed for survival. Others may be needed but are only a temporary fix like a bandaid but do not solve or treat the problem. The problem is chemical dependencies from being hooked on these medications pre cribed by doctors. Are you hooked on meds or have trouble getting by without the use of addictive medications prescribed by your doctors? What Do People Know About Surviving a Brain Injury with Host Michael Idell -
People dont like to be judged but they do it themselves. In the public eye, people see what they see but they dont know what is behind someone's eyes, a hidden disability. People don't understand a cognitive disability, the history behind a person's life, or what makes a person who they are now. People don't understand emotional imbalances, over sensitive people, post traumatic stress disorder, or why some people reach out so much for acceptance of who they are now. These are all common circumstances due to a brain injury... insecurity about who they are now and who they once were. People surviving a brain injury have many personal obstacles they have had to accomplish to get back on their feet or are still trying to accomplish that. It has an emotional impact - the personal battle during recover, acceptance of who they are now, adandonment of friends and family, the neglect of loved ones to understand brain injury affects have on an individual, and (for those who don't look disabled), the understanding of why an individual tries so hard to be accepted by other who don't have a brain injury.

Brain Injury Communication with Michael Idell - Let's Stop The Labels
Join me, Michael W Idell this Friday February 5th at 5:30 p.m. till 6:50 p.m. Pacific time ( that's 8:30 p.m. till 9:50 p.m. Eastern Time ) on Brain Injury Radio Network as your host. The topic of the week is "Let's Stop the Labels". People with disabilities should be looked at by their abilities not what they're incapable of doing. There needs to be a stop with degradation segregation stereotypes and no one deserves to be pitied. Many people with disabilities have more drive, initiative, and motivation more than most "normal" lazy people do without a disability. Please call into our radio show at 424-243-9540. The show is recorded for FCC purposes. Please share with your groups and friends.

Brain Injury Radio Show with Michael Idell - Positive Motivation
Positive motivation has an impact on everyone involved with family members, caregivers and those involved with neurological impairments. Recovery processes have an undoubtable negative impact on invidividuals without a positive influence involved. A positive perception assists everyone through coping strategies including the initial impact on the news, the struggles involved, and the accomplishments made. Families and caregivers need to have somewhere to go to when they have their struggles like giving up their lives, paying bills, making time for another life, and the responbilities which ensue. Then most importantly is teamwork! ANYONE INVOLVED NEEDS TO LISTEN, LEARN, AND COMMUNICATE! This is why we (ASBISG.org) have conference calls and meetings for caregivers. All of the attention isnt focused on just the survivors lives. Caregivers and family members understanding, communication, love and affection have an enormous affect on the brain injured. We are all a product of our environment. The community needs to help one another and help each other through the good times and bad.

Please join us to learn a positive approach to a better life with co-host and special guest Executive Vice President National Seizure Disorders Foundation, David Paul. We are talking about beating a drum for a positive change in life and concentrating on stress relievers. People need to ask themselves "What does not work in my my life and how do I change it?" Too many people concentrate on what's wrong instead of what needs to make them better. The concentration should be "I need to focus on a better life to get there." http://nationalseizuredisordersfoundation.org/ http://www.asbisg.org Please check out our resources and our non-profit websites to become members, see our support services we offer and get involved in team work in the community.

Brain Injury Communication with Host Michael Idell-Education about Brain Injury
Any type of abnormal brain function is a brain injury. PTSD, multiple sclerosis, hydrocephalus, strokes, tumors, anoxia, neuromuscular disorders such as transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome or related neurologic conditions are all types of brain injuries of different kinds, along with traumatic brain injuries. We need to educate the public, doctors, familes and survivors what these disabilites are. They are often misinterpreted and misdiagnosed because individuals are judged upon instead of understanding. We need to educate survivors how to accept who they are now.We need to motivate survivors, caregivers and family members to not give up and how we can all progress. Please join our calls online and by phone. http://tobtr.com/7929731 and call in to speak with the host (424) 243-9540

Brain Injury Communication with Host Michael Idell/Paying the Bills
Brain Injury Radio Network does not only apply to survivors of brain injuries. Caregivers, family members, loved ones, medical professionals, advocates who want to make changes happen for survivors and the generally public who want to learn how to help others in need. Who decides when outpatient care is no longer needed, how an individual can not get any better, or when limitations run out? Many insurance companies cut off care for outpatient care after a limited amount of time. There are many struggles that occur for anyone involved in the financial side of occurance after a brain injury. Unless there is a substantial lawsuit which takes place after, the largest battle aside from the recovery process is how are needs going to be met. For caregivers, when your life is put on hold to now cover the expenses for someone else aside from trying to take care of yourself or children in a family, now you may have an adult who can not manage these tasks on their own any longer. Unfortunately, home health aides are not in any position to take care of these personal needs. Who represents the injured? For a survivor, are handling financial tasks too much? Has your cognitive development had an impact on stress, money, relationships they can now trust in their lives and how things will be taken care of? What happens if an individual hasn't been so blessed to finally get approved for SSDI? Who represents the survivors after family has given up their relationships with the survivors? When disability insurance only covers 80% of medical costs (if any) how does a disabled individual know how to get supplemental insurance? How much does the brain injury community know where to go and who to talk to in each state or even locally in their area? Let us know ASBISG.org

Brain Injury Communication with Host Michael Idell -Brain Injury Acceptance
How do you accept your brain injury without pushing it under the rug to forget it or have it come up in every conversation with others? It All Starts With You! After a clinical setting, survivors wondering where they go from here, who understands, and questions comes up. From building confidence, self-esteem, empowerment and optimism; self-help groups help meeting others in the community going through similar circumstances in real life dealing with emotions, struggles, and encouraging stories of those who got past their dilemmas. Support services to build assistance these people into a normal life style to get back on track in a comfortable, safe, caring and optimistic atmosphere to empower them and build their self-esteem. Support groups are equally beneficial when psychotherapy has been established for a client as it builds strength and character for them they can do this on their own. Statistics show how life improvements for clients and those who want to volunteer their own time have made a vast improvement with the ability to help others in a time of need. This helps who is trying to get back into the work force, helps assist others in need, and helps bring friendships and understanding to people who think no one understands.

Down and dark days of brain injury survival with Host Michael Idell
Many of us have hard days in life just as anyone else does but with a brain injury, coping strategies are hugely different. Positive reinforcement may need to come from family, friends, and caregivers but how can we do it within ourselves? Emotional impacts on the brain injured have a different level than the general public but it isn't impossible to achieve rewards through positive coping strategies. Let's discuss what we do to help, ideas what may be better, and alternative measures than medication. ________________________________________________________________________ We have a weekly conference call Mondays for anyone who would like to learn about brain injury and share their stories: US Toll Number: (641) 715-3580 Meeting ID: 526-281-810 Instructions: At the scheduled date and time of the meeting, dial into the conference line. Brain Injury Communication with Host Michael Idell - Where Do We go from Here?
Have you or someone you have loved been wrapped up just thinking about brain injury all day and night? "I wish I was who I was back then or before"..... Does your day get taken up by thinking how bad things are or what is getting on your nerves? How much time is wasted thinking about what others are doing and what you are not doing? Where do you go from here? CHANGE. Utilize your time in a positive fashion or you are just wasting your time! Stop thinking of your past and concentrate on a positive tomorrow. Your time is wasted thinking about your past instead of focusing on a better life today! If you have a brain injury, you can not change the life experiences that came our way but you can change your perspective of how it consumes you. Your mind sets your mood. You decide on what gets the best of you. You decide to be strong or to be weak. If you need help or some motivation, reach out to those who love you. Call someone who cares to pick you up when you are down. Call someone in the brain injury community like us! Friday May 1st, 2015 5:00pm-6:30pm (Pacific time) 8:00pm -9:30pm (Eastern Time) You don't have to be brain injured to call in to our show!

Brain Injury Communication w/Host Michael Idell - Transitioning w/ Lisa Dryer
Transitioning into the community after a brain injury has enough personal bouts of their own with physical and/or neurological impairments. Getting assistance is very dificult where we can go, who to talk to, and finding people who understand. Family and friends many times don't have the patience. Government offices don't have much to offer to people with cognitive disabilities. State brain injury centers have a limited amount of resources to offer or don't communicate well with many individuals. Lisa Dryer and Michael Idell have both lived in different parts of the country since having their brain injuries. They have found a number of people in their support groups nationally who have had all of these problems and more. They advocate for change and would like to get the word out to medical professionals by survivors, caregivers and the public who are knowledgable with the disabled community. Please join us and speak together in a positive, uplifting atmosphere to share and tell our stories. We are alive and have accomplished so much. Let's start educating the public that we do exist and to keep an open mind this could be anyone we know at any given moment.

Respect and Dignity 101
In the beginning there is the Emergency Room (ER). Away we go – off on a journey – trying our best to re-build our shattered lives in a society that ill equips us to deal with our new selves. The loss. The Pain. The Fear. The lack of self-confidence and self-esteem makes everything harder! Families caught in the middle desperately trying to help and understand our issues and new lives. Friends want to help but don't know how. We try – we fail – some will try again – some succeed – some don’t. To become a victim creates a partnership with dysfunction, and the brotherhood of misery and distain! We must look deep inside ourselves to find the discipline to persevere and not become a victim. The road to recovery begins with the person standing in front of the mirror. It also takes personal responsibility to get better and move on. We must hold ourselves accountable for our actions and well being. It is our obligation to rebuild our lives and not be held back when people don’t understand the consequences of a brain injury. We must find hope – because hope enables us to try again – you can make it – keep trying until you succeed! Learn from this experience and move on. I don’t care if you are a caring professional or a person with a brain injury. We must speak to each other and hear what we are saying and try our best to overcome the burden this tragic turn of events has created in our lives. We must trust what each of us has to say and not dictate our values and prejudices into each other’s lives. Trust flourishes and is nourished when we hear and understand what each of is saying. Respect and dignity is something everyone needs to survive and thrive. Call in tonight and talk about your journey and recovery. Our knowledge is based on experience. Let people hear what you know and how to live!

Brain Injury Communication with Michael Idell- Controlling Brain Injury
How do you see yourself moving forward if your focus is on the past? Who keeps you down? Who picks you up? Who decides what gets to you? YOU DO! The physical trials after surviving a brain injury we may not be able to always overcome. We may still have a cane, a walker, a wheelchair, some trouble speaking, walking or hearing but one thing we can control is our own happiness. We decide on what aggravates us, what keeps us down, and what bothers us. It's time to take control of our lives in a positive fashion. Positive reinforcement and outlook is the only way to move ahead in life. We, as survivors, have had our bouts since our brain injuries but no one is to say life is over now. This is a subject that hits us at home but s a struggle all people go through in life. We decide on how things affect us. We can let things overcome our focus and willpower. Why let the things we can't control overwhelm us instead of just controling the things we can- happiness. Small rewards in brain injury rehabilitation lead to larger goals of accomplishment, self esteem, empowerment, and confidence. This affects our outlook, the way we portray ourselves to others, and helps our own bodies grow healthy to remain there. If anything to be happy about, we are alive!!! Please call into our show, join the conversation and listen in to the callers speak. Call in to speak with the host (424) 243-9540 This call is for those involved directly and indirectly with brain injury. Public awareness is needed globally as well. This may be you or your loved ones one day. Families and friends need to learn about brain injury too!

Brain Injury Communication with Michael Idell- Patience-A Controlled Substance
Many people have an issue with anger, frustration, lack of time and are always wrapped up in their own lives to make time for others. Two worlds collide with this aspect for the brain injured: 1. Communication with others to understand what survivors go through. 2. Caregivers, friends, and loved ones need to listen with an open mind. PATIENCE IS NEEDED TO MOVE FORWARD. Listening skills are something most people in our lives need to improve. Strategies are there for learning how to improve these communication barriers. Individuals with brain injuries may not be noticeable to the naked eye but if a common trait by people to stop, listen and ask open ended questions; the frustation and anxiety easily subsides for caring and empathy.
