An elevator pitch, elevator speech, or elevator statement is a short summary used to quickly and simply define a person, profession or service and its value proposition. Understanding Social Intelligence for Career Success
Dr. Mary Bemker in her return appearance on "Own Your Career" tackles the topic of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence is the capacity to effectively negotiate complex social relationships and environments. Social intelligence, rather than quantitative intelligence defines humans. Social scientist believe social intelligence is an aggregated measure of self- and social-awareness, evolved social beliefs and attitudes, and a capacity and appetite to manage complex social change. "The ability to understand and manage men and women, boys and girls, to act wisely in human relations". It is equivalent to interpersonal intelligence, one of the types of intelligence identified and closely related to theory of mind. Social intelligence is a person’s competence to understand his or her environment optimally and react appropriately for socially successful conduct.

How to Leverage “At-Will” Employment as the CEO of Me, Inc.
At-will employment is a term used in U.S. labor law for contractual relationships in which an employee can be dismissed by an employer for any reason (that is, without having to establish "just cause" for termination), and without warning. When an employee is acknowledged as being hired "at will", courts deny the employee any claim for loss resulting from the dismissal. The rule is justified by its proponents on the basis that an employee may be similarly entitled to leave his or her job without reason or warning. In contrast, the practice is seen as unjust by those who view the employment relationship as characterized by inequality of bargaining power. Learn how to leverage “At-Will” employment on this episode of Own Your Career.

Leveraging the Informational Interview as the CEO of Me, Inc.
In this episode of Own Your Career, Rod discusses and answers questions on how to create the demand for the CEO of Me, Inc. in leveraging the "Informational Interview". An Informational Interview is a meeting in which a potential job seeker seeks advice on their career, the industry, and the corporate culture of a potential future workplace; while an employed professional learns about the job seeker and judges their professional potential and fit to the corporate culture, so building their candidate pool for future hires. In an informational interview, job seekers can be unemployed, or else employed and considering new options. They use the interview to gather information on the field and on specific companies that they might want to work at. They can find employment leads, and expand their professional network. The employed professional from whom the potential candidate seeks advice and information also learns about a new potential colleague or hire and builds their own network through the conversation. This differs from a job interview because the conversation is not about hiring and not about a specific job. The potential candidate asks general questions about the nature of the company or the industry, and the "insider" learns his or her professional character at the same time. The information interview helps overcome a problem with most discussions in a recruiting/job-seeking process, where each side is hesitant to talk to the other because they are uncertain about whether they might be wasting their time with an unqualified candidate or unsuitable workplace. In contrast, "the informational interview provides an non-threatening forum" for discussion as the two sides learn about the other.

An unemployed individual could submit a crisp, well-formatted resume to an employment agency that would then send it to potential employers who were a good fit. A little over ten years ago, this strategy was sufficient for landing an interview because the demand for jobs was met by a healthy economy.

Preparing a Winning Resume / Proposal as the CEO of Me, Inc.
In this episode of Own Your Career, Rod will share his insight on the resume / proposal for the CEO of Me, Inc. As the CEO of Me, Inc. (Career Ownership) your resume is a proposal to a client that must impress, not just inform. Think of it as a marketing tool, not a historical record. It is valuable real estate – use it for your most impressive information. If you don’t list any accomplishments in your resume, chances are no one will call you. Visual presentation is an important as, if not more important than, resume content. No one is going to take the time to read a traditional resume that is poorly presented. What is a Resume? A resume is a well written proposal that details your qualifications & results for a particular job or job target. It is shared with the client's portal (blackhole), connectors and advocates.

What, Why and How to Small Talk
Small Talk: Getting to Know You It all starts with the “small talk," the key to making those first connections! In this segment of "Own Your Career with Rod Colon", Rod will share with you his techniques to the What, Why and How to Small Talk. It’s surprising to discover how many people consider “small talk” irrelevant to networking. I couldn’t disagree more. The Secrets to the "T" Cover Letter
There are many formats to choose from when drafting a cover letter. Many people prefer a straightforward, paragraph based cover letter simply because they’re comfortable with it or possibly because they haven’t heard of other, possibly better formats. The T–Letter One style in particular that we in the ETP Network find exceptionally beneficial is the T–Letter. The express purpose of a T–Letter is to demonstrate — with strong visual impact — exactly why you are uniquely qualified for the position you seek. If you’ve done your homework well and selected a position for which you are a dead–on match, a T–Letter gives you the chance to lay out your case for the job “point by point” using a chart in the middle of the letter. The chart compares each core requirement for the job on the left with a corresponding “qualification bullet” on the right demonstrating how you have proven experience for that requirement.

7-Step Job Search Methodology
This segment of Own Your Career will cover my 7-Step Job Search Methodology. It is a procedure that’s been tweaked to near-perfection over the past five years but will undoubtedly be tweaked many more times whenever improvements are discovered, tested, and evaluated. As you step yourself through this process, we'll take the networking skills you learned, the powerful CEO mind set, and the magnetic attraction of your value proposition and weld them together for maximum impact. To do this, your CEO business brain must think in four dimensions, i.e., remember that each component (networking, CEO mind-set, value proposition, and methodology) becomes supercharged when combined with the other three but has ample horsepower to stand on its own when the situation calls for it. This will be challenging work and at times you may become frustrated. But the payoff is substantial: You will cut yourself free from the grip of The Black Hole. Instead of being dependent on people who don’t know you to advance your career goals, you will learn to network your way to an interview, job or contract by leveraging the power of advocates — people who not only know you, but like you, trust you and will gladly help you to “connect the dots.”
