You’re out on the Great American Plains, the fire is dying down and sunlight is creeping up above the horizon. Can you believe an asteroid almost crashed into the Earth in 1908? An event that flattened trees for miles, with a butterfly-shaped crash site but no crater, it serves as a reminder that the sky can throw fireballs at us whenever it feels like it. How fun. I also can’t get over the sky glowing for days after the event, that seems insane to me and if I saw that, especially in the early 1900s I’d definitely think the world was ending so I don’t know how the people who witnessed it got through it. Satanic Panic is more than just a fun rhyming scheme. It represents a time when very real harm was done to unsuspecting victims, all because conservatives needed someone to blame. But it didn’t just stop when popular media found something else to fixate on. The harm of being associated with something as inflammatory as satanic rituals, however unproven, followed daycare workers in the form of headlines and heresay and many were driven out of the careers they loved. How did the three lighthouse attendants go missing, never to be seen or heard from again? Why did they set the table for dinner but never came back to eat?
