    Jonah Acts Out

Last week, we saw the power of God’s Word when the Ninevites heard It and turned from their wicked ways. Then, God showed compassion and did not destroy them. We should be willing to share God’s Word with those around us. In Chapter 1, we saw Jonah Going Down as he was thrown over the side of the ship. In Chapter 2, we saw Jonah Coming Up as the great fish vomited him on the shore. In Chapter 3, we saw Jonah Going Into the great city of Nineveh to share God’s Word. And today, in Chapter 4, we will see Jonah Acting Out as he sits on the hill pouting. As we’ve studied through this Book, I’ve noticed more and more how modern Christianity mirrors Jonah and his actions. So many of us are close enough to God to hear Him calling us to a specific task, but like Jonah, many choose not to obey. It seems that the modern church is glorifying the “meism” mentality that Jonah makes famous in this Book. We choose not to help our brother, we decide not to serve the body with the gifts, talents, and abilities that God provides, and we pile up riches for ourselves while we rob God. The title of our message today is Jonah Acts Out. Our message points will be: Partial Obedience is Disobedience The Pouting Prophet The Mercy and Patience of God Main Scripture - Jonah 4:1-11 Supporting Texts - Jonah 3:10, 1 Samuel 15: 9-11 & 22, Job 1:20-21, Jonah 2:2 & 7, Romans 5:8-9, James 4:14, Psalm 145:20, John 14:15 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is it easy to think Partial Obedience is okay? Do you recognize when you are a “Pouting Christian? Explain. Explain how God is Patient with you. Take time to write what Chapter 4 would look like if Jonah kept the vows he made in Chapter 2, and then ask yourself which chapter you are living in.

    Jonah Goes In

Last week, we looked at what some people call “unbelievable.” We read about Jonah’s time in the belly of the great fish. There is no doubt that Chapter 2 describes a miracle, but what we see in Chapter 3 may be an even greater miracle. Today, we will see God’s Word turning a group of people from their wicked ways. Today, we will see Jonah as he Goes Into Nineveh and preaches a five-word sermon that will radically change the Ninevites. I call Jonah 3 his “Meltdown Experience.” No, not that kind of meltdown. Meltdown was a Student Conference that we used to attend. When we go to student conferences, retreats, and mission trips, we often get ripped from our comfort zones. By design, these events have us focus on time alone with God, and most of the time, each of us returns on fire for God. We do things that before the trip, we would never do. Jonah was removed from his comfort zone, and he had uninterrupted time with God. This led to obedience by Jonah and repentance by the Ninevites! The title of our message today is Jonah Goes In. Our message points will be: Jonah Seizes the Second Chance Jonah Preaches a Five-Word Sermon God’s Word Moves a People to Repentance God has Compassion on Nineveh Main Scripture - Jonah 3:1-10 Supporting Texts - Matthew 12:40-41, Genesis 10:11-12, Deuteronomy 31:8, Romans 10:17, Judges 2:7 & 10-11, Colossians 1:16, Jeremiah 18:7-8, Luke 1:78-79 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why are Second Chances important? Do you judge sermons on their length? Explain. Can a sermon be too short or too long? Explain. How often do you use Scripture when you talk to people? Why is it important to share God’s Word? List some ways that God has compassion for you.

    Jonah Comes Up

Last week, we looked at a selfish man who just happened to be a prophet of God. Jonah got a Word from the Lord to: Jonah 1:2 "Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”The people of Nineveh were Jonah’s enemies, so he ran from God and God’s calling. We closed the message with: Jonah 1:17 But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights. Today, we will see what most scholars call Jonah’s Prayer. The renditions that I’ve seen of Jonah in the great fish, showed a man sitting inside of a whale. He had lots of space, and maybe even some of the things needed for his three-day stay. I have a very different picture in my mind. I envision a man bound in a tight space with seaweed wrapped tightly around him. I see him struggling for each breath. If I were painting Jonah in the fish, I would paint a man with no hope who is on the verge of death. The title of our message today is Jonah Comes Up. Our message points will be: All Distractions Removed Focus on God Recognize the Truth Get a Second Chance at Obedience Main Scripture: Jonah 2:1-10 Supporting Texts - Jeremiah 23:24, Jonah 1:17, Luke 10:38-42, Psalm 139:1-4, Isaiah 1:15, Jeremiah 10:14-15, Psalm 86:8-10, Isaiah 19:14, 1 John 1:9 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why are distractions bad? List some distractions that cause you to lose focus on God. What does focusing on God afford you? What is Truth? Should recognizing truth affect your life? Explain. What should we do with second chances?

    Jonah Goes Down

Most of us remember the story of Jonah from our childhood Sunday school classes. We may recall the songs, the drawings of Jonah inside of the great fish, and the repentance of Nineveh at the end of this great Old Testament story. The songs were fine, the drawings were precious, but Jonah’s story doesn’t end with the repentance of Nineveh. For the next 4-weeks, I invite you to delve into God’s Word as we look at the Book of Jonah from front to back. The theme of this sermon series is “A Picture of Modern Christianity,” and in Chapter 1, we see that Jonah flees from the Lord. He knew that the Lord was calling him to a specific task, and he chose to disobey. Many Christfollowers today run from things that we know that the Lord is calling us to do.The title of our message today is Jonah Goes Down. Our message points will be: God has a Plan for You God Pursues You in Your Disobedience God Punishes You in Your Disobedience Main Scripture - Jonah 1:1-17 Supporting Texts - 1 Corinthians 10:31, Genesis 4:16, Romans 5:20, Matthew 8:24-25, Proverbs 13:24, Hebrews 12:6, Romans 5:8 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Do you ever think about the plan that God has for you? Explain. Why is it important that God has a plan for all of His creation? Why do people try to run from God? Does it encourage you to know that God pursues you in your disobedience? Explain. Why do people despise being punished? Explain the purpose of punishment.

    Habakkuk’s Prayer

Last week we saw God’s reply to Habakkuk’s second complaint. After giving him the answer in the second half of Habakkuk 2:4 but the righteous will live by his faith—, God goes on to pronounce five woes on the Babylonians. We called them the: 1 - Woe of Greed, 2 - Woe of Gluttony, 3 - Woe of Violence, 4 - Woe of Lust, and 5 - Woe of Idolatry These woes weren’t pronounced against people in our day, but the precepts taught in them can equally be applied. The unrighteous will live in this manner, but the righteous will live by his faith. Today, we will finish our sermon series in the Book of Habakkuk with what most people call: Habakkuk’s Prayer. This is his response to God’s answer in chapter 2. May we not miss that Habakkuk’s situation hadn’t changed, but his heart had. He was now walking by faith instead of by sight. He was living by promises, not by explanations. Our message points will be: Habakkuk’s Prayer to the Lord Habakkuk’s Reflection on the Lord Habakkuk’s Confidence in the Lord The message title for today is: Habakkuk’s Prayer Main Scripture: Habakkuk 3:1-19 Supporting Texts - Habakkuk 2:4, Psalm 71:15-16, Exodus 40:38, Matthew 5:14, Exodus 15:14, Deuteronomy 2:25, Joshua 10:12-13, Galatians 5:25, Acts 16:24-25, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Psalm 24:1-2 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why did Habakkuk go to the Lord in prayer? Why should we go to the Lord in prayer? Why did Habakkuk need to reflect on the Lord? What should our response be when we reflect on the Lord? Could Habakkuk have confidence in the Lord? Explain. What shows our confidence in the Lord?

  19. 102

    God’s Answer

Last week we saw Habakkuk’s second complaint. He was still confused after hearing God’s first reply, and he gave the Lord a series of questions once again. As Chapter 1 closes, one may think that Habakkuk had given up hope in God answering him, but listen to the first verse of Chapter 2: Habakkuk 2:1 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.May we exude such faith as we wait for the Lord to answer our prayers! Today, we will see God’s reply to Habakkuk’s second complaint. In Verse 4, we see His answer: Habakkuk 2:4"See, he is puffed up; his desires are not upright---but the righteous will live by his faith— My prayer for PFBC has been for us to live by our faith. Our message points will be: The Answer Woe of Greed Woe of Gluttony Woe of Violence Woe of Lust Woe of Idolatry The message title for today is: God’s Answer. Main Scripture: Habakkuk 2:2-20 Supporting Texts - Isaiah 55:8-11, Proverbs 28:20, Ecclesiastes 3:1,Jeremiah 22:13&15a, Genesis 9:6, Isaiah 6:3, Romans 8:22, Psalm 11:4, Psalm 46:10 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: What kind of answer does God give in verse 4? Explain how this is a good answer to all of Habakkuk’s questions. Give examples of Greed and Gluttony in our day. Why are people drawn to Violence? Why does Lust drive people? List some idols in our day. Circle those that entice you.

    Because I'm God

Last week we took a brief look at the entire Book of Habakkuk along with seeing his first complaints. He complained about what he called injustice. Things weren’t going how Habakkuk thought they should, and naturally, he pushed the blame onto God. Much like us, Habakkuk never considered that the decisions and actions of his people may be causing the issues they were experiencing. Today, we will see God answer Habakkuk’s first complaints, but it doesn’t seem much like an answer. We will see God describing the Babylonian army that He will use to judge His people for their idolatry. As we move through the message today, please don’t miss that God calls us to: Believe the Unbelievable God Can and Will Use the Ungodly No One is too Ungodly The message title for today is: Because I’m God Main Scripture: Habakkuk 1:5-11 Supporting Texts - Exodus 3:1-2, Exodus 14:21-22, Daniel 6:23, Mark 5:41-42, Matthew 14:25, Luke 24:5-6, Ephesians 3:20-21, Romans 7:15, Isaiah 55:8-9, Romans 3:10, Romans 11:36, Proverbs 16:4,Matthew 16:18, Isaiah 13:11, 2 Peter 2:9 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is it hard for Christians to believe the things that God does? Is it logical to believe that God spoke and there was but not believe He can use the ungodly to bring Himself Glory? Explain. Why does God sometimes use the ungodly? Does God operate like we think He should? Explain. Why do we put limits on God?

    Why?

Last week, we finished up our sermon series through the Book of Philippians. May we continue Pressing On Toward the Goal of Christlikeness! Today, we will begin a five-week series through the Book of Habakkuk. The overarching theme of this series is: Why? As we move through life, many of us have questions about problems that arise:Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do innocent people die?Why does evil seem to have an upper hand? Habakkuk had similar questions for God. In the first two chapters, we will see the dialogue between Habakkuk and God, and then in the third chapter, we will see Habakkuk’s prayerful response. The message title for today is: Why? Our points for the message will be: Introduction The What and The Who Habakkuk’s First Questions Main Scripture: Habakkuk 1:1-4 Supporting Texts - Habakkuk 2:4, Habakkuk 3:19, Habakkuk 2:14, Isaiah 13:1, Isaiah 17:1, Jeremiah 14:9, Psalm 13:1-2, John 8:23, Exodus 2:23-24, 1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 3:10, Romans 5:12, Revelation 11:16-18 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Is Habakkuk a Major or Minor Prophet? Explain. Why was this message from God considered a burden for Habakkuk? How was Habakkuk, the prophet, unique? Why was Habakkuk questioning God? Who’s sin was Habakkuk focusing on? Is it okay for us to ask God questions? Explain.

    Thanksgiving Isn't Just for November

Last week, we talked about “Strife” within the church. We saw Paul sharing that the key to keeping Strife out of the church is to remain focused on: The Main Thing - Jesus Christ Peace - that He gives The Good - that He will do through us Today, we will finish our sermon series through the Book of Philippians. Our overarching theme has been Pressing on Toward the Goal, and that goal is Christlikeness. Our message title for today is Thanksgiving Isn’t Just for November. In this section of Scripture, we see Paul giving three ways that we can show thanksgiving to our Father in heaven each and every day. Our points for the message will be: Contentment Generosity Concern Main Scripture: Philippians 4:10-23 Supporting Texts - 2 Corinthians 8:11-12, Mark 12:41-44, Galatians 2:20, Acts 20:35, Exodus 29:18, Isaiah 1:13, Luke 18:29-30, 1 Corinthians 12:26-27 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Define Godly Contentment. Do you have Godly Contentment? Explain. How much of Himself did God give for you? Explain. Why should we be Generous to others? What does having Concern for the church look like? Do you truly have Concern for the church? Explain.

    Enough with the Strife

Last week, we were able to finish our two-part message titled: Pressing On Toward the Goal. We talked about this “Goal” being Christlikeness. As we press on, we should Be a Good Example as we seek to live the Christ life. We should Recognize Reality, and that is that in the church, some have an Earthly Mindset and others have a Heavenly Mindset. And finally, we should Stand Firm on the Rock that is Jesus Christ. Today, we will see something that has plagued the church from the beginning: Disputes. We will see two prominent members of the Philippian church at odds with each other, and we will see Paul’s instructions for the church to deal with this situation. Our message title for today is Enough with the Strife. Our points for the message will be: Focus on The Main Thing Focus on Peace Focus on The Good Main Scripture: Philippians 4:2-9 Supporting Texts - Philippians 2:3, 1 Thessalonians 5:14, Matthew 14:28-30, 1 Peter 5:7, Romans 5:8, Ephesians 3:20, Romans 11:33, Isaiah 55:8-9, 2 Corinthians 13:11 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: What is “The Main Thing” in the context of our message today? Why should we stay focused on “The Main Thing?” Define the Peace that God offers. How is this Peace different than the peace that the world offers? Is it easy for you to focus on bad things? Explain. Why should we focus on the things we see in Philippians 2:8?

Pressing On Toward the Goal (Part 2)

Three weeks ago, we looked at Part 1 of a message that bears the name of our sermon series through the Book of Philippians: Pressing On Toward the Goal. We talked about the confidence that comes from our faith producing Awareness, Motivation, and Consistency in our lives. The lost and dying world around us needs to see all of these exuding from the church. We should look radically different than society. Today, we will see Paul closing out with the call to Stand Firm. I believe that the church has failed to do so for years. In years past, “Thus saith the Lord” was enough, but as we continue in the age of human secularism, being politically and socially correct has entered the equation. We don’t want to offend anyone, so, as the church, we keep to ourselves. If we are to Press on Toward the Goal of Christlikeness, we are going to have to Stand Firm on the Rock that is Christ Jesus! Our points for the message today will be: Be a Good Example Recognize Reality Stand Firm Main Scripture: Philippians 3:17-4:1 Supporting Texts - 1 Peter 2:21, Romans 10:14-15, 1 Corinthians 11:1, 2 Timothy 2:15, Proverbs 22:7, Matthew 7:15, Hebrews 10:26-27, Matthew 25:46, Jude 1:4, 1 Corinthians 5:1-2, James 4:4, 1 Corinthians 15:51-58, Philippians 2:12-13, 1 Thessalonians 2:19, John 15:4, Colossians 2:9-10, Colossians 3:2 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Do you feel comfortable encouraging people to follow your example? Explain. How can you be a better example? Are you in tune with Reality? Explain. Give examples of both Earthly and Heavenly mindsets in the church. Explain the importance of Standing Firm as the church.

Pressing On Toward the Goal (Part 1)

Last week, we made it about halfway through our message on where we find our Confidence. Today, we will finish up this message as we see the difference between finding our confidence in works versus faith. May we not forget that works are temporal, and faith in Christ is eternal. We will then move on to the first part of a message called “Pressing On Toward the Goal.” As Christ-followers, we find our confidence in the faith that God freely gives us. Because of this, we should exude some attributes as we press on toward the goal. The three points to our message today will be some of these attributes: Awareness Motivation Consistency Main Scripture: Philippians 3:12-16 Supporting Texts - 1 Peter 2:1-3, Philippians 2:12-13, Romans 7:14-15, Luke 9:23, 2 Peter 1:3-4, 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Philippians 3:20-21, 1 John 3:2, 1 John 2:6, Colossians 3:16, Titus 2:11-12 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: In general, how important is Awareness of your surroundings? Explain. Explain the importance of spiritual Awareness. If your eternity is secure in Christ, how can you stay Motivated to live the Christ Life? How Consistent are you in your Christian Walk? Explain. Explain the value of Consistency in someone’s Christian Walk.

  26. 95

    Where is Your Confidence?

Last week, we answered the question: “Can You be Trusted?” We looked specifically at leaders, normal everyday folks, and finally, we asked a very specific question: Can You be Trusted? I hope that each of us can be trusted to carry and share the Gospel of Christ in a worthy manner. Today, as we continue our sermon series through the Book of Philippians, Pressing On Toward the Goal, we will try to answer the question: “Where is Your Confidence?” As we move through the first part of Philippians 3, we will see two specific areas that Paul hones in on. Some find their confidence in their works, and others find their confidence in their faith in Christ. May we not miss that one of these areas is temporal and the other is eternal. Our message title is “Where is Your Confidence?” and our points will be: Rejoice in the Lord Is Your Confidence in Works? Is Your Confidence in Faith? Main Scripture: Philippians 3:1-11 Supporting Texts - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Philippians 2:17, James 1:2-3, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 12:1-2, Matthew 23:1-3, John 6:44, Isaiah 1:13, John 3:30, Romans 6:4-5, Ephesians 3:8 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Do you find joy in the Lord at all times? Explain. Why should we Rejoice in the Lord? Why do people find confidence in their works? Can your confidence wane if you find it in your works? Explain. Why should we find confidence in our faith in Christ Where do you find your confidence?

  27. 94

    Can You be Trusted?

Last week, we looked at the idea of “Shining Like Stars.” Pastor Chad and I would call this “Living the Christ Life.” Many people are saved, but those living the Christ Life are Shining God’s light everywhere they go. Today, as we continue our sermon series through the Book of Philippians, we will try to answer the question: “Can I be Trusted?” We will focus on two different individuals, Timothy and Epaphroditus. Paul and the church trusted both of these men with the responsibility of ministering to others. I pray that each and every one of us is living our lives in a manner that those around us see us as trustworthy. Our message title is “Can You be Trusted,” and our points will be: Can a Leader be Trusted? Can a Christ-follower be Trusted? Can You be Trusted? Main Scripture - Philippians 2:19-30 Supporting Texts - Philippians 2:3-4, 2 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Timothy 3:10, Philippians 1:21-26, 1 Corinthians 1:27-31, Romans 12:15, Romans 12:10 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is it important to have good leaders in the church? What makes a leader trustworthy? Why is it important that all church members are trustworthy? What makes an average Christ-follower trustworthy? Can you be trusted? Explain

    Shining as Stars

Two weeks ago, we celebrated Resurrection Day. My prayer has been that we would celebrate Christ’s resurrection daily as we live out the “Christ life.” Living in this manner brings continual joy to our lives, and it provides hope to those around us. When we seek to have the Mind of Christ, our lives move from selfishness to selflessness. We begin to see people and situations, good or bad, as opportunities to serve our King. Today, we move to a section of Scripture that many only skim through. Paul deals with a problem that most people are stuck neck-deep in…complaining and arguing. These two things are prevalent in our day, and as Christ-followers, we must understand that both hinder our ability to share the Gospel effectively. Our message title is “Shining as Stars,” and our points will be: Working Out Your Salvation Shining as Stars Rejoicing Always Main Scripture: Philippians 2:12-18 Supporting Texts: Philippians 1:4-6, Judges 17:6, Romans 3:10-12, Romans 8:6-8, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Romans 12:2, 2 Peter 3:14, 2 Peter 1:3-4, John 6:63, John 15:11-12, Jeremiah 7:18-19, Romans 5:3-5, Romans 8:9, John 14:16, Galatians 5:22 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: What does Paul mean when he says: “…continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling?” Who is active in sanctification? Explain. Do those around you see you “Shining as Stars?” How often do you argue or complain? Explain. How can you live in a manner that others see you “holding out the Word of life?” Do you find yourself “Rejoicing Always?” Explain.

    Having a Mind of Christ

Last week, we looked at the hard-to-apply idea of “Loving Others as Yourself.” This stems from Paul’s teaching in Philippians 1:27aWhatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The idea is great, but the application is hard. The only way that we can love others as ourselves is through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can only receive the Spirit by receiving Christ. Today is Resurrection Day! My prayer is that each and every one of us recognizes Christ for Who He is today: The Perfect Sacrifice for the sins of the world. As we celebrate this great day, may we seek to have the mind of Christ! Our message title is “Having the Mind of Christ,” and our points will be: The Mind of Christ Humility not Entitlement Christ Exalted Main Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11 Supporting Texts: 1 Corinthians 15:17, John 1:1, Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1, John 8:58, Exodus 3:14, John 10:30, John 10:33, Philippians 1:27, Colossians 2:9, Matthew 26:53-54, Colossians 2:13-14, Matthew 20:28,2 Corinthians 5:21, Hebrews 10:10, Hebrews 1:4, Isaiah 45:22-23, Luke 16:24, 2 Peter 3:9-10 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Is it possible to have the mind of Christ? Explain. What does having the mind of Christ look like in your life? Explain how you see a sense of entitlement in society, the church, and in your life. How can we rid ourselves of a sense of entitlement? Why should Christ be exalted?

    Loving Others as Yourself

Last week, we looked at an idea that most aren’t comfortable with Striving and Suffering for Christ. We like the idea of “Advancing the Gospel,” but we aren’t keen on the time and effort it takes to do so. We like the idea of “Exalting Christ,” but struggle with dying to self in order to do so, and we like the idea of “Standing Firm,” but at times, we fail to use the backbone that God has given us to do so. Today is Palm Sunday, and we will be moving into Chapter 2 of Philippians as we look at “Loving Others as Yourself.” There is no better example of someone doing just this than Jesus when He rode that donkey into Jerusalem. He knew that He would be wrongfully accused, convicted, beaten, and murdered, but He went willingly to rescue you and me! May we celebrate Passion Week by following His great example and “Loving Others as Ourselves.” Our message title is “Loving Others as Yourself,” and our points will be: United in Christ Loving Others as Yourself Main Scripture: Philippians 2:1-4 Supporting Texts: Philippians 1:27, Mark 12:29-31, Matthew 7:12,1 Corinthians 15:17, Mark 8:34, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15,Ephesians 1:14, Philippians 1:18, Colossians 1:16,Isaiah 14:12-14, Genesis 3:6, Proverbs 11:2,1 Peter 5:5, Romans 12:13-16 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is Palm Sunday important? How is what Jesus did on Palm Sunday a great example of Loving Others as Yourself? Explain the importance of being united with Christ. How can PFBC be like-minded with other churches? How are you at Loving Others as Yourself? Explain. Why is this concept important in the church?

    Striving and Suffering for Christ

Last week, we looked at the idea of an abounding love. Paul desired for the Philippian believers to experience, exercise, and share the love of God. When they did this, they brought glory and honor to God. In the section of Scripture that we will look at today, Paul shares about how even with him being in prison, God was using him to advance the Gospel. We will see a somewhat different view of being wrongfully put into chains as Paul shows that God’s will is greater than our will. We have the option to exalt Him no matter our circumstances. We will see Paul standing firm for what he believed to be true. The Jews were against him. The Gentiles were against him, and even some of the church was against him, but his resolve was sure. Hopefully, we will understand that we too can stand firm for the cause of Christ in our day. Our message title is “Striving and Suffering for Christ,” and our points will be: Advancing the Gospel Exalting Christ Standing Firm Main Scripture: Philippians 1:12-30 Supporting Texts - Genesis 45:5, Ephesians 6:19-20, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, James 5:16, Acts 20:24, Revelation 4:11, Isaiah 5:20, Ephesians 4:1, Philippians 4:6-7, John 13:15-17 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Explain the importance of Advancing the Gospel. Can the Gospel advance without your involvement? Explain. If God is God, why should we exalt Christ? How can you exalt Christ in your day-to-day life? Is it possible in our day to Stand Firm for Christ? Explain how the church can Stand Firm for Christ.

That Your Love May Abound More and More

Today, we will begin a 10-week sermon series through the Book of Philippians. Our theme for this study will be “Pressing On Toward the Goal.” We will learn that, through Christ Jesus, we have been given everything to do just that. Some people call the Book of Philippians, Paul’s Love Letter. After reading this letter, there is no doubt as to the depth of love that he has for the people. Paul loves them enough to encourage them, instruct them, and remind them of the power and love of their God. In the first part of Chapter 1, we will see Paul giving his customary welcome, thanksgiving, and prayer. May we not miss his prayer for the church in Philippi in verses 9-11. Paul prays for an Abounding Love in the church. We would do good to pray for the same today. Our message title is “That Your Love May Abound More and More,” and our points will be: Introduction Thanksgiving Abounding Love Why Main Scripture: Philippians 1:1-11 Supporting Texts - Acts 16:13-14, Philippians 4:3, Philippians 1:13, Philippians 2:5, Philippians 2:3-4, James 1:18, 2 Corinthians 7:3, 1 John 4:8, John 13:35, Philippians 4:8, Isaiah 64:8, Romans 5:5,Colossians 1:16, John 15:8, 1 Corinthians 10:31 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why did Paul take time to write the church in Philippi from prison? What is an Abounding Love? Why did Paul pray for this love in the church? Explain what having an Abounding Love in your church looks like. How can living in this manner bring God praise and glory?

    I Will Treasure Church Membership

Last week, we talked about “Leadership.” More specifically, we talked about leadership in the family. For us, as Church Members, to be what God has called and equipped us to be, we must continually submit to Him and His authority. Our husbands and fathers need to step up and lead. Husbands, love your wife the way Christ loves His church. You need to lead your children in the Word of God. It is paramount for strong Christian families, and it is paramount for strong Christian churches. Today, we will finish our sermon series on church membership with a message entitled: I Will Treasure Church Membership. We will talk about the importance of seeing church membership for what it is: a gift from God. I pray that each of us will take time to recognize what a gift it is. Our points for today will be: What is a Treasure? Experiencing Church Membership as a Treasure Why do You Treasure Church Membership? Supporting Texts: 1 Corinthians 12:27, 1 Peter 2:9, Exodus 19:5, 1 Timothy 2:5-6, 1 John 1:7, Hosea 13:14,Matthew 6:21, Philippians 2:3-4 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Where is your treasure? Would those around you agree with your answer? Explain. Explain how God treasures you. Do you treasure church membership? If so, explain how and why.

I Will Lead My Family to Be Healthy Church Members

I hope that we are seeing the importance of church membership as we move through this sermon series. From being a “Functioning” and “Unifying” Church Member to not being a “Me First” Church Member as we pray for our church leaders, we have looked at attributes and responsibilities that each of us should exude. Today, we will look at what might be the most important part of our series. We will talk about “Leadership.” More specifically, we will talk about leadership in the family. Our society seeks to destroy our families by redefining what a family is. We have moved on from the fight of a marriage being between one man and one woman to now spreading the lie that men can become pregnant and birth children. All of this comes from a lack of leadership and the failure to hold others accountable. My prayer this week has been for Church Members to take the blessing of church membership seriously. Our message title is “I Will Lead My Family to be Healthy Church Members.” Our points will be: We Must be a Healthy Church Member We Must Lead Our Spouses Well We Must Lead Our Children Well Main Scripture: Ephesians 4:32 - 6:4 Supporting Texts: 1 John 2:6, John 14:12, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Philippians 2:3-4, Galatians 3:28, Genesis 1:27, Genesis 2:18, Proverbs 18:22, 1 Peter 3:1, 1 Peter 3:7, Proverbs 13:24, Proverbs 29:15 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Do you respect hypocrites? Explain. Why do people think that they can lead others to be something they aren’t themselves? Explain the importance of the roles that God has given husbands and wives. If you are married, are you fulfilling your God-given role properly? Explain. Why is it so important for mothers and fathers to lead their children well?

I Will Not Be a "Me First" Church Member

So far in this series, we have looked at the idea of being a Functioning Church Member and a Unifying Church Member. Last week, we drove home the idea that to be a church, the members must be unified. Without unity, the different parts of the body of Christ (the church) don’t function properly. Today, we will look at the idea of not letting your church be about your preferences and desires. So often, people treat church like something that they purchase. They see their offering as their payment for what they like. Some shop around until they find a church that meets their desires, and others work hard to make “their” church conform to “their” likeness. Our message title is “I Will Not Be a “Me First” Church Member,” and our points will be: What Does “Me First” Look Like “Me First” Church Members Exude… Godly Church Members Exude… Main Scripture: Galatians 5:16-26 Supporting Texts: Romans 8:9, Romans 8:12-14, Isaiah 5:20, Matthew 5:43-45, Philippians 2:3, James 3:16, 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Jeremiah 17:9, Philippians 4:4,2 Peter 3:9, Galatians 2:20, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:15 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: What does “Me First” look like in you? How can you combat a “Me First” attitude? Read Galatians 5:19-21 and list the sins that you struggle with. Read Galatians 5:22-23 and list the fruits that you lack. How can you become a better Church Member?

  38. 83

I Will Be a Unifying Church Member

Last week, we looked at the idea of being “A Functioning Church Member.” We can define this person as someone who does what God designed them to do. God has designed you to worship Him corporately, and He has designed you to edify or build up your brothers and sisters in Christ by using the gifts, talents, and abilities that He has blessed you with. Are you a Functioning Church Member? Today, we will switch gears and look at the idea of being “A Unifying Church Member.” Unity is something that modern society knows little about. We seek to divide at every corner, and this has made its way into the church buildings. Our message title is “I Will be a Unifying Church Member,” and our points will be: Unity is Paramount Unity Trumps Negativity Unity Oozes Forgiveness Various Texts: John 13:35, Colossians 1:15-18, Romans 8:29, Colossians 3:12-14, Romans 1:28-32, Jeremiah 6:27-30, Matthew 6:14-15, Ephesians 4:31-32, Luke 6:31, Proverbs 17:9 Questions: Explain the importance of Unity to the church. Explain the importance of Unity within the church to those who are lost. How can Unity trump negativity? Explain how you feel about the forgiveness that God offers you through Christ Jesus. Should Church Members offer forgiveness to each other? Explain.

I Will Be a Functioning Church Member

Today, we begin a six-week sermon series on Church Membership. This is a subject that we don’t talk about much at PFBC. This is somewhat by design as I have witnessed pastors pressure people to join the church. After seeing the effect that church-hoppers have on congregations, I have chosen not to pressure people to join. I don’t want to try to muscle in on the Holy Spirit as He leads. I encourage you to read a chapter of the little book: “I Am A Church Member” each week before our Worship Service. There are six chapters, and we have six messages. We will look at a chapter a week. This week, we will focus on chapter one: I will be a Functioning Church Member. My definition of a Functioning Church Member is this: someone who does what God designed them to do. Our message title is the same as the chapter title, and our points will be: Simply a Part of the Whole Preferring to Love What’s Your Function? Main Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12-14 Supporting Texts: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, 1 Corinthians 12:31, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, John 1:3, Romans 5:8, 1 Corinthians 14:12, 1 Corinthians 14:26, Romans 12:4-5 Questions: Why is being a “Part of the Whole” not enough for some people? Explain why the church can’t function properly without all of its parts. Can we really “prefer to love?” Explain. What is your specific Function at PFBC? Are you a Functioning Church Member? Explain.

    Counsel

The idea of our heart reflecting who we are can be a scary thought. It really shouldn’t be, but at times we want others to think much of us. My prayer for months has been for PFBC to be sincere. If we are truly saved, our hearts have been changed. By the blood of Jesus, our hearts have been cleansed. My prayer is that we will Reflect Jesus More in 2024! Over the last two weeks, we have dealt with how we receive Compliments and Criticism. Today, we will extend this out to how we deal with Counsel. This isn’t a dirty word. Counsel simply means advice. Proverbs 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. As we reflect on our 2024 Verse of the Year, May we truly be Christ-followers who care for others. May we not live for Compliments from the masses. May we humbly receive Criticism as we grow in Christ. May we humbly seek Counsel from godly brothers and sisters in Christ. Our message title is “Counsel,” and it comes from Proverbs 27:9. Our points will be: Counsel, Who Needs it? It’s Best to Give and Not Receive, Right? Heeding Our Ultimate Friend’s Advice Supporting Texts: Proverbs 12:15, Proverbs 19:20, Proverbs 27:19, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Proverbs 24:5-6, Proverbs 12:5, Psalm 1:1, Proverbs 13:20, Proverbs 27:6, Proverbs 19:25, Matthew 7:3-5, John 15:13, Matthew 16:22-23, Proverbs 18:24, James 2:23, Romans 5:10-11, John 15:13, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:9 Questions: Why do we shy away from Counsel? How can we discern between good and bad Counsel? Why do we tend to give more Counsel than we receive? How can you fight the urge to give too much Counsel? Why should we heed the Counsel of God?

  41. 80

    Criticisms

I hope that you are continuing to pray for God’s people to hunger for corporate worship and fellowship. As you pray, invite those who don’t have a church home to worship and fellowship with us at PFBC. You may be the person who helps a friend with their New Year’s Resolution to get back in church. Last week, we looked at how to deal with Compliments. I hope that none of us are doing good works to be seen. We should do good works in a manner that when they are seen, we are pointing to our Father in heaven. Today, we will continue with our 2024 Verse of the Year sermon series by moving our focus to how we deal with Criticism. We will compare Criticism and Constructive Criticism as we see without a doubt that, as the church, we should seek to correct each other when we get out of line. Our message title is “Criticisms,” and it comes from Proverbs 27:6 and 27:17. Our points will be: Correction, What’s That? Recognizing Helpful Wounds Staying Sharp Supporting Texts: Proverbs 27:19, James 5:19-20, Psalm 101:5, Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 13:24, Galatians 6:1, Matthew 7:12, 1 Timothy 5:20, John 8:44, Romans 12:15, 1 Samuel 23:16-17, James 2:8 Questions: Explain the importance of correcting wrongdoing. Why is Constructive Criticism better than Criticism? Can a friend correct you without tearing you down? Explain. Why can’t a prideful heart receive correction? List some reasons that it is important for Christ-followers to worship and fellowship together. Who is sharpening you? Who are you sharpening?

    Compliments

Here we are, 2024! A New Year, and hopefully not the same old bad habits. May we all live healthier this year, mentally, spiritually, and physically. Today, we begin our Verse of the Year 2024 sermon series. Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a look at three things that help to mold our character. How do we deal with: Compliments, Criticisms, Counsel. lIf our hearts are going to reflect the love of Christ, we are going to have to put “self” by the side and seek to be holy because God is holy. If our hearts are going to reflect the love of Christ, we have to stop thinking of ourselves so much and think of others. Our message title is “Compliments,” and it comes from Proverbs 27:2. Our points will be: Put the Rubber to the Road Compliments Supporting Texts: Proverbs 27:19, 1 Samuel 15:26, Jeremiah 17:1, Jeremiah 17:9, Mark 7:21-23, Jeremiah 31:33, Romans 12:2, John 14:15, Proverbs 16:5, Proverbs 16:18, James 4:6, Romans 12:16, 1 John 2:16, Romans 5:12, 2 Corinthians 10:12, 2 Corinthians 10:18, Matthew 5:16, Matthew 25:21 Questions: Why do people like to look at themselves in a mirror? What does this show? Do people openly allow others to see their “heart/mind?” Explain. How can we obey Jesus’ commands? Why do we like compliments? What does this show? How can we diligently do good works that may be seen in a manner that we don’t do them to be seen?

    Oh, what a Savior

Christmas! The day that most first-world children look forward to and most first-world adults dread. The children get gifts, gifts that they have wanted, and most of the time, gifts that will be broken or all but be forgotten about by the time Christmas vacation is over. The adults are on the hook for the gifts. Stress engulfs people this time of the year. Did I get the right gift? Did I remember everyone? How am I going to pay for all of this? Upon witnessing the typical first-world family Christmas, someone who isn’t in the know would totally miss Christ. Isn’t that the case with most first-world Christians? If we allow someone who isn’t in the know to spend a day with us, wouldn’t they miss Christ as well? This is a sad statement, but it is true: Most first-world Christians are too busy pointing to self to point to Christ. May we all seek to glorify Christ as we celebrate His birth. Merry Christmas! Our message title is “Oh, What a Savior,” and it comes from Isaiah 9:6-7. Our points will be: A Lost People An Appeal An Indictment An Invitation A Warning Main Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7 Supporting Texts: Isaiah 1:2-20, Romans 3:10-12, Romans 5:8, Hosea 6:6, Revelation 3:15-16, 1 John 1:7,2 Peter 1:3-4, Revelation 2:16 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Think back over the last week. List sins that you recognize, and then repent from them through the power of the Holy Spirit. Why do we need alarm clocks? Does the church need to be awakened? Explain. How do those who attend church often “trample” God’s courts? Explain the importance of God’s invitation. How can you remember and heed God’s warning daily?

    Jesus is Coming Again

It is hard for me to believe that today is the last message in our sermon series through the Book of Revelation. From the beginning, we said that we would major on the Majors and minor on the Minors. Hopefully, we have done this by focusing on Christ. Hopefully, we have a better grasp on the End Times. Hopefully, we understand that we can’t know the day or the hour, and hopefully, we know that we should be ready for Christ’s return at all times. Today, we will see a series of “finals.” May we seek to apply what we have learned from our time in the Word to the lives that God has blessed us with. We should share the Gospel with those around us for the glory of God and the benefit of those hearing. And finally, may we seek to do so at all times, not just on Sundays. Hallelujah! Our message title is “Jesus is Coming Again,” and it comes from Revelation 22:7-21. Our points will be: John’s Final Reaction Jesus’ Final Address The Lost’s Final Invitation A Final Warning Come, Lord Jesus Main Scripture: Revelation 22:7-21 Supporting Texts: Daniel 8:26, Daniel 12:10, Mark 13:33, 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, Isaiah 44:6, Titus 3:4-5, John 6:44, Acts 1:8, John 3:16, Isaiah 55:1, Deuteronomy 4:2, Proverbs 30:5-6, 2 Timothy 4:8, Romans 5:1 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: How can we be sure to worship properly even when we are overwhelmed? What do you make of Jesus’ Final address? How important are invitations? Explain. Do you give invitations to come to Jesus? Do you value the inerrancy of God’s Word? Explain. Are you ready for Jesus to return? Explain.

    The River of Life

Today will be our next-to-last message in the Book of Revelation. It is easy to get bogged down in longer studies, but we must continually remind ourselves that all of this is God’s Word. I hope that you have enjoyed our time together in this great Book as much as I have! We will continue to look at the New Heaven and New Earth that we saw last week. Hopefully, we will clearly see how heaven and the earth on which we now live contrast sharply.  Our message title is “The River of Life,” and it comes from Revelation 21:22 - 22:6. Our points will be: The Promise of Protection The Promise of Purity The Promise of Provision The Promise of Perception Main Scripture: Revelation 21:22 - 22:6 Supporting Texts: Isaiah 60:5, Revelation 21:8, Luke 10:20, Genesis 2:10, Genesis 3:22, Ezekiel 47:12, Luke 22:29-30, 1 Corinthians 13:9,1 Corinthians 13:12, Genesis 2:16-17, Matthew 22:13, Revelation 3:21, Isaiah 46:9-11 Digging Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: How important is eternal protection to you? Explain. If you are a Christ-follower, do you continually rejoice that your name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life? Why or why not? Do you trust that God will eternally provide for you? Explain. How important is the knowledge of God’s Word? Do you treat It as such? Explain.

    The New Jerusalem

We are nearing the end of our study through the Book of Revelation. Since February, we have been looking at the writings of John as he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos. We have seen instructions, warnings, and most recently, judgments as we looked at the end of Revelation 20. Today, we will look at most of Revelation 21 as we are introduced to the New Heaven and New Earth. As we enjoy the splendor and reality of heaven, may we not forget that the eternal hell that we talked about a few weeks ago is just as real. The only hope for those who are lost is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord that we have the ability to share the Good News! Our message title is “The New Jerusalem,” and it comes from Revelation 21:1-21. Our points will be: New Heaven and New Earth God Speaks The Conquerers The Cowards The City Main Scripture: Revelation 21:1-21 Supporting Texts: Matthew 24:35, Revelation 22:1, Romans 7:15, John 19:30, Psalm 42:1-2, 1 John 5:4-5, Romans 3:10,John 14:6, Romans 6:23, Colossians 2:14,Revelation 17:1, Hebrews 11:10, John 1:10, Ephesians 2:20, Matthew 13:45-46 Digging Deeper.  After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is a New Heaven and New Earth important? How does God speak in our day? Explain. Why is it important to understand when God is speaking? Explain the difference between the Conquerers and the Cowards in Revelation 21:7-8. What are your favorite parts of Revelation 21:9-21? Explain.

    The Judgement

Last week, we looked at “The Thousand- Year Reign of Christ.” It is comforting to know that Satan will be locked away in the Abyss during this time. Jesus will reign from David’s throne in Jerusalem, and it will be a time of peace, joy, and comfort. This week, we will take a look at the Judgment. We will see Satan thrown into the lake of fire where he will be tormented forever. We will also see Christ and all of His glory as He sits on the Great White Throne judging the dead. Don’t miss what this passage of Scripture teaches. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord for He is worthy of our praise! Our message title is “The Judgment,” and it comes from Revelation 20:7-15. Our points will be: Satan and his Doom Jesus and His Glory The Great White Throne Main Scripture: Revelation 20:7-15 Supporting Texts: Genesis 19:24, Revelation 19:20, Luke 16:24, Psalm 9:7-8, Daniel 7:9-10, John 5:22, Revelation 21:1, 2 Peter 3:10-13, Romans 8:1, Matthew 7:22-23, Romans 3:23, Revelation 21:4, Revelation 20:6 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Why is what we see in Revelation 20:7-10 important? Does this encourage you? Explain. Read Revelation 20:11 and write the thoughts that run through your head. What happens at The Great White Throne Judgment? Why is this judgment important?

    The Thousand Years

Last week, we looked at a message titled: “The Word of God.” I have prayed this week that we do not miss our opportunities to recognize His Word and the work that It does. I have also prayed that when we recognize His Word, we will respond with a Hallelujah This week, we will take a look at the Thousand Year Reign of Christ and His saints. As powerful as Satan is, his power pales in comparison to the power of God. A day is coming when Satan will be restrained, and there will be peace on earth. May we seek to continually praise God for His mercy and His grace, and may we praise Him for choosing us to be a part of His plan. Our message title is “The Thousand Years,” and it comes from Revelation 20:1-6. Our points will be: The Evil one Restrained The First Resurrection The Thousand Year Reign Main Scripture: Revelation 20:1-6 Supporting Texts: John 8:44, 1 John 5:19, Revelation 19:15a, Hebrews 4:12, Revelation 20:8b, Matthew 25:33-34, Matthew 25:46, Daniel 12:2, 1 Corinthians 15:21-23, Matthew 19:28, Luke 14:14, Revelation 20:14, 1 Peter 2:9, 1 Corinthians 13:12 Diving Deeper. After listening to today's message, consider asking yourself the following questions: Explain the difference between Satan’s power and the power of God. How can such power be restrained? Explain the importance of the “First Resurrection.” Will you be included in the “First Resurrection?” Explain your answer. Give your thoughts on the Millennium.
