Sermon Study Breakdown with Mike Augsburger (Neh. 6:15–7:76)
This week on Propagate, Josh and special guest, Pastor Mike Augsburger, break down the sermon study distributed to growth group leaders at Soteria Church on April 28, 2024. The sermon study on Nehemiah 6:15–7:73 is as follows: REFLECT How have you experienced someone’s generosity before? What did they sacrifice in order to be generous? ENCOUNTER After completing the building of the wall around Jerusalem, the credits rolled. In Nehemiah 7, Nehemiah lists all of the families that were in Jerusalem. And toward the end, he mentioned that there were a few leaders and families who gave a significant amount of money toward the wall project. On top of that, the rest of the people gave from what they had to give. Everyone in the city contributed to the project. Why did they give? Because of a common mission. In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul addresses a New Testament church. Paul asked the church in Corinth (among others) to give relief money to the Jerusalem church. He tells them why they should give, what motivations they should have to give. Read 2 Corinthians 9:6–15 and answer the following questions: How could verse six be incorrectly interpreted? What does it actually mean? Why does God love a cheerful giver? What makes a giver cheerful? According to verses eight to ten, God enables his people for good works. How does God enable people to be generous? According to verses eleven to fifteen, how do the recipients of the gift respond to God? to the giver? How did this week’s sermon convict you? How did this week’s sermon encourage you toward generosity? Propagate: Where we grow in community by multiplying healthy groups through the ministry of the Word. Welcome to another installment of Third Thursday Theology! Has the theology of the Holy Spirit ever confused you a little? Well, you're not alone in that. Sermon Study Breakdown (Neh. 5:1-13)
This week, Pastor Zach and Josh break down the sermon study distributed to growth group leaders at Soteria Church on February 25, 2024. The sermon study on Nehemiah 5:1-13 is as follows: REFLECT Just for fun, what did you do to receive your most expensive traffic violation? Why is confession of sin so difficult? ENCOUNTER In Nehemiah 5, sin comes to light. In order to build a good wall, you have to dig into the ground to lay the foundation for it. When you dig down to lay the foundation, you might unearth something that has long been buried and hidden away. Spiritually speaking, this is what Nehemiah does in Jerusalem. As he is getting ready to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, certain sins of the people are unearthed. And these sins needed to be dealt with before the building project could get underway. The people had to confess their sin in order for the community to move forward in faith. In Acts 19, we see another situation where sin is confessed. In this passage, Paul goes to Ephesus. During his time there, many sorcerers and demonists repent and become Christian. Let’s examine the situation surrounding their confession of sin. Read Acts 19:11-17. Why was Jesus’ name esteemed by the Ephesians? Read Acts 19:18-20. What radical actions accompanied the new believers’ confession of sin? What was the result of their confession? Read Acts 19:21-27. How did the mass conversion of the occultists impact the community at large? Read Acts 19:28-29. How did the community respond? TRANSFORM How can the hidden sin of individuals debilitate the collective mission of the church? How does Romans 5:6-10 give hope and comfort to you in your sin? We Love God's Presence
It's pillar time! On this week's episode of Propagate, Josh and Pastor Zach discuss why we should love God's presence. Sermon Study Breakdown (Neh. 1:4-11)
This week, Pastor Zach and Josh break down the sermon study distributed to growth group leaders at Soteria Church on January 28, 2024. The sermon study on Nehemiah 1:4-11 is as follows: REFLECT What circumstances surrounded a time in your life when you felt like you prayed most faithfully? Describe a time when you felt like your prayer life was stagnant. ENCOUNTER In Nehemiah 1:4-11, Nehemiah prays to God for days. Exiled in Persia, Nehemiah asks God to forgive Israel and to allow them to enter back into the promised land, back into Jerusalem, so that they might once again worship God according to the Law of Moses. One of the more fascinating aspects of Nehemiah’s prayer is that it is saturated with other Scriptures. The genius of Nehemiah’s prayer is that he put God’s words back before God’s ears. Briefly, look up the following references and compare it with Nehemiah’s prayer in Nehemiah 1:4-11. How much of Nehemiah’s prayer was original to him compared to how much of it was simply quoting Scriptures back to God? Daniel 9:4 2 Chronicles 6:40 Psalm 88:1 Daniel 9:5-6 Deuteronomy 30:1-5 Deuteronomy 9:29 Genesis 24:12 TRANSFORM Have you ever prayed Scripture before? If yes, how did you do that? How could weaving prayer into your Scripture reading reinvigorate your prayer life? What specific Scriptures could you pray together as a growth group in the coming weeks? PRAYER Read through 1 John 4:7-21 as a group. Use these verses as a script to pray back to God. Praise God for who he is revealed to be in these verses. Ask for God to help our church be what God has called us to be in these verses. Propagate: Where we grow in community by multiplying healthy groups through the ministry of the Word. Sermon Study Breakdown
This week, Zach breaks down the sermon study distributed to Growth Group Leaders at Soteria Church on September 29, 2023. The sermon study on John 15:1-8 is as follows: REFLECT What are your regular patterns of Bible reading and prayer? What hinders you from enjoying reading God's Word? ENCOUNTER Someone described the paradox of the Christian life as “labour to be brought near.” It is active and passive. We actively work to follow Christ and passively rest as God works in us. “John Calvin said, ‘Let us therefore labor more to feel Christ living in us.’ John Owen added, ‘Labor, therefore, to fill your hearts with the cross of Christ.’ And Jonathan Edwards exhorted, ‘We should labour to be continually growing in divine love.’ (quotes adapted from Rankin Wilbourne, Union With Christ, 144). This paradox is exactly what Jesus taught about remaining in him in John 15:1-8. Let the all important truth from this week’s sermon text take root in your heart. Read those verses together, discuss the sermon and what it means to remain in Christ. How did this week's sermon help you understand what it means to be pruned? In your own words, what does it mean to remain or abide in Christ? What questions do you still have about these verses? TRANSFORM Jesus said, "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you" (John 15:7 CSB). A key way we labor to abide in Christ is through the word and prayer. Discuss Bible reading and prayer as a labor to be brought near. In other words, how is it passive and active remaining in Christ? What is one little step you can take to fight to delight in God's Word this week? Propagate: Where we grow in community by multiplying healthy groups through the ministry of the Word.
