Skagit Storytellers

Skagit Storytellers is a podcast that's dedicated to entertaining the people who are recording it. If anyone else enjoys the episodes, that's cool too. There is no agenda, a lot of exaggerating and probably shouldn't be taken seriously.Recorded in an underground studio filled with vintage typewriters in the heart of the Skagit Valley.Skagit Storytellers is a subsidiary of 217 Digital LLC.Host: Liz DuffyEmail: [email protected] us on PayPal!

    S04 E23: Adam Barkley

Adam Barkley visited the studio last month to chat about his musical journey. His band, Biff Got Killed, is a favorite of mine and I thought it would be enjoyable for those in the local scene to know more about him. Adam lives his life very intentionally, which you'll learn in this episode when he speaks about his past, his family and his music. I encourage you to listen to his current project on Bandcamp (https://biffgotkilled.bandcamp.com), but don't sleep on That Scoundrel (https://thatscoundrel.bandcamp.com), his previous band, from Mississippi (the episode closes with a Scoundrel song). Follow Biff Got Killed on Instagram to see when they are playing next.Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.Love escape rooms? Never tried one? S04 E21: Joe Leroy

My guest this week is Joe Leroy. He’s been integral in the Valley’s music scene for the last three plus decades. The first local show he saw was Lawn Dart, if you’ve shopped at Hugo Helmer’s the last 25 years, you’ve probably met Joe (He sold Charlie Krengel his first guitar!) and his old band, Funeral for Bugs, played the first Birdstock (along with Bad Chuck). Joe is a sweetheart and I think anyone who’s known him will love this episode. In addition to teaching me some history of the Skagit music scene, he also shares stories of his mom, addiction and loss. Finally, you’ll be treated to three songs and if you want more, he’s just released his debut album under Joe Leroy and the Reconsillers. It’s called “Blue Pipes and Hot Nights” and you can stream it on the major platforms (When he gets his band together and plays a show, you’ll hear it here first). Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.Love escape rooms? S04 E20: April Patterson

April Patterson is a veteran, local real estate agent and advocate. She's passionate, full of purpose and this episode is overflowing with joy, useful information and inspiration. April sits on boards of United Way Skagit (unitedwayskagit.org), Rotary in Burlington (show up on Friday mornings!) and would probably attend any event you invite her to. She's a Connector to the utmost degree and the Skagit Valley is a much better place because of her. If you know a veteran who is in need, contact April and she can either help or point you in the right direction: navyvetrealestate.com/Join April and I (and Rayna and Clay!) at Raise the Roof on April 18th. S04 E18: Sara Fish

Sara Fish is a local realtor (sarafishgroup.kw.com/) and talented singer who I met (in a beautiful way) at Mari Wuellner's Jumpstart Conference in Bellingham in January. In this episode, Sara shares important stories about her career, challenges and family. Give her a shout if you're looking for a realtor, want to know about weight loss (she's a survivor!), or have a craving for italian food (She moonlights at Nonna Luisa in Anacortes).  I can't thank her enough for coming to my studio and making a lasting impact on me and I know that this episode will bring joy to everyone. Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E16: Tony Moceri

Tony Moceri came across my radar in December when I found his book "A Wandering Mind" at Barnes & Noble in Bellingham and immediately asked him to be on the podcast. He visited the studio last month for one of the funniest, practical and most inspiring episodes I've recorded. Check out all of his ventures here: tonymoceri.com (Especially his podcast with Melissa!) From his website: "...I am an entrepreneur, real estate investor, writer, and coach. I’m deeply interested in how people build meaningful lives through work, creativity, and smart decision-making. Over the years, that curiosity has shown up through multiple ventures, including Yard Game Nation, a passion project centered on play, connection, and outdoor community, and Drip Trickle Flow Flood, where I explore income, money flow, and financial mindset with real-world perspective." If you know Tony, you won't be surprised that this episode jumps around a little bit. We had a blast recording this and if you find Tony's energy as infectious as I do and want to connect with him, do it! "I’m always open to new ideas, collaborations, and opportunities. If you think there’s something I could help with, feel free to reach out, connect with me on LinkedIn, or find me on Instagram at @tonymoceri." Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E15: Luke Deryckx

Luke stopped by the studio in December to share his music journey (that started in Birdsview), family stories (Harps and Ireland!) , and we mention several folks who we admire in our local music community. See Luke play percussion for Forest Stoke and Natural Israel soon (Follow Luke's IG account for upcoming shows (@fall_line)) and you'll also see him in the crowd supporting his fellow artists. Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E14: Casey Freedom

Casey Freedom drove several miles north on Highway 9 to visit the studio to laugh with me and chat about his life, family, and career. He reveals some of his big dreams for 2026 (including a Montana tour), explains why college took longer than it should and plays not one but TWO fantastic songs for my listeners. We also unveil our dream (fake) triple bill at the Shakedown (Casey, Upriver rockers Pretty Much Nothing, and LA's own Watertower), and if Casey doesn't release a studio recording of the Truck Song soon, I'm releasing his cell number and home address to the masses until it's done. S04 E13: Thaddeus Hink

Thaddeus Hink stopped by the studio in the Fall of 2025. We had a meaningful, meandering and thoughtful conversation about photography, writing, music and family. I was surprised to find out he played tuba in high school (with Stone) and he was also a founder of the Anacortes Music Project. Before he heads north to Alaska (and jump starts that music scene), catch him at a show taking pictures or enjoy his well written social media posts (until his Substack is set up). I appreciate Thaddeus for being open and honest during our recording and I'm forever grateful that I get to do this work. Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E11: Matney Cook

Matney Cook returned to her roots of Sedro-Woolley and visited the studio back in October. We instantly dove into our stories with detail, humor and passion (and we laughed, a lot). I would describe Matney as a unique woman who is equally powerful, soft and confident and she's a fabulous musician. You can find her solo, strumming her acoustic guitar and telling stories, or as the lead in her band Nobody's Peach (No matter what she's playing on stage, she will 100% have a big smile on her face). She's hosting an amazing event at the Honeymoon in Bellingham with her friends Stone Jones, Tom McKay and Ted Madden this Friday, January 2nd. Find her music everywhere, like Bandcamp, and be sure to grab some merch when you're at one of her shows.Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something [email protected] @nobodyspeachbandSupport us on PayPal!

    S04 E09: Haley Suiter

Haley Suiter stopped by the studio near the end of the summer and we had an enjoyable, meaningful conversation. It blew me away when I learned she was only 15 years old. From her website: "I am a faith-filled, old soul with an insatiable love for the timeless melodies of classic rock. Music is my passion, my soul feeds off the lyrics, tone, and beat resonating deeply within me. I feel music is the solution to everything. Living a life of abundance and seeking endless possibilities is my mantra. I believe in embracing every opportunity and uncovering all that life has to offer. With a curious spirit and an open mind. I have given myself permission to live a life of authenticity and purpose. By doing so, I hope to inspire others to do the same. I firmly believe that when we grant ourselves the freedom to be true to ourselves, we create a ripple effect, empowering others to do the same."Check out her website or her socials for upcoming gigs.Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E08: Brandon Meyers

Brandon stopped by the studio last summer. We laughed and shared stories for a couple of hours and found out we had a lot in common: We are both Canadian, coached middle school basketball, love Lopez Island, don't love BC Ferries (get it to together guys), and we are both teachers. He tells me about his love for the Grateful Dead, his rap album and the vision he has for music at his school. Passionate, kind and talented folks are my jam and Brandon is all three (x100). Speaking of jam, his band Only Tree has the most creative merch I've seen at local shows. Thanks for the puzzle and I look forward to hocking some OT lot merch at your next show 🙂 When is there next show? Check out their Instagram page for all the details: instagram.com/onlytree_band/ Lastly, here is a project that Brandon is spearheading: Hindsight 2025 is a crazy mind bender event coming in December! A double CD/streaming download PLUS a huge festival featuring 25 of Bellingham's bands. Food trucks, beer tent, musical gear raffles, 3 stages... all to raise money for the Mr. Peabody Scholarship for the Bellinghome School Of Music & The Joy Of Music. These scholarships assist in music lessons & instruments for those that can't afford it!Stay tuned for more detailsEnjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E07: Quinn Thompson

Quinn visited the studio last summer and entertained me for quite a while. His stories are gloriously long and full of so many great tangents (due to his Attention Detention Efficit Order). He talks about his previous bands (there's a lot), his cats nicknames (they are long) and name drops at least 100 fantastic local folks. His band Fanny Alger posts their upcoming Revivals on Facebook, and their next show is the 2025 Rockin' Yule Bizarre on December 20th at Buxton's in Anacortes. Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E05: Zach Hamer

Last August, local musician Zach Hamer stopped by the studio to share his incredible story with me. Our conversation was fascinating, informative, funny and authentic. We discuss haunted houses, breaking the law, music in the Valley (Zach and I may have met in 2016) and his various projects you can find online (Like his 2024 movie, "Dragons on the Hill" or his podcast "History's a Joke"). He plays one of his newest songs, "So Sad" from his solo project Forest Stoke. Check out his Instagram account for his upcoming shows *and* head to Hidden Hall in Seattle on 11/22 for his band Kuinka. If you're listening to this on the day it's published (11/1/25), come out to the Honeymoon in Bellingham to see Forest Stoke with Natural Israel (fun fact: Local music fan and talented drummer Luke Deryckx will be on the kit for both performances that night!). Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S04 E04: Kamriell Welty

Kamriell Welty and I crossed paths in 2024 when I taught her youngest child. I quickly learned how much we had in common (enthusiastic curiosity, over the top positive attitude, and a love of challenges) and knew she'd be a fun podcast guest. Listen in for travel and ticket hacks, Swifty-lore, old tales of kids selling berries in the Valley and some golf stories too. I credit my latest adventures to her simple two word life motto, "Why not?". S04 E03: Mikel Perkins

Mikel Perkins, former tuba player and current member of rock band MakLak, founded Bellingham's newest music organization, Bellingham Helps Access Music (BHAM) last May. He visited the studio to talk about his non-profit and how meaningful it is to him, "It's my life's work. It's the culmination of everything I've worked towards." His journey in music will leave you in awe and my hope is that you channel your inner Mikel and follow your passion with high levels of enthusiasm, curiosity and grit. This driven, thoughtful and kind person is also a dad, and I can't wait to see what his daughter Zoe accomplishes in her life with him as her example. Check out the non-profit here: https://www.bellinghamhelpsaccessmusic.org/ Maklak's music on SpotifyEnjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.If you love music, go see some rad live music at the Arcadian Public House.Love my intro song and my logo? S03 Ep030: Shannon Patino

"Shannon Patiño is a Mexican American singer-songwriter currently based in Mount Vernon, WA, who blends folk and pop influences to create heartfelt, empowering, and vulnerably authentic music. As the first-born daughter of Mexican immigrants, Shannon’s work reflects her unique perspective, exploring themes of identity, self-worth, and love in its many forms with lyrics in English and Spanish that resonate across cultures." That quote is from her website, but let me tell you some things that she didn't post: Shannon is a funny, nerdy and adorable musician who has a beautiful voice. She would say she's terrible at responding to texts, but I prefer to think that she's enjoying her real life too much to reply quickly. If there's an emergency, call 911, not Shannon. She bakes delicious treats, runs with her husband with Skagit Runners, and loves hiking. We both are blessed with imposter syndrome, big laughs and I look forward to hanging out with her more. Check out her website (shannonpatino.com) for her upcoming shows. S03 Ep029: Leo Bootes

Leo Bootes stopped by the studio to tell me about his musical journey. If you know Leo, you know he's a great storyteller (especially one on one). Enjoy this Part 1, where he describes his hard working parents and how music became such a huge part of his early life. He's been jamming at our studio lately with his band, so be sure to catch him at a show (his Hendrix covers are my favorite). Find him on Facebook to see his next event. If you're reading this 7/12, he'll be playing Rockport Bar and Grill.Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music? He gigs more than most (from Snohomish to Whatcom), so check out his social media to see where he'll be next. Charlie shared heartwarming and tragic stories that are the foundation for his new and upcoming EP of original music, due to be released soon. Enjoy your weekend, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music? S03 Ep026: Bob Paltrow

Bob Paltrow is a New York native, Bellingham based graphic designer and musician. If you've ever seen his current band, Cats Like Us, you'll know that Bob is a fantastic storyteller, as well as an artist. Find out what song he learned to make his piano teacher mad (it didn't), and what Arizona reptile inspired him to write his first song (a rap). Check out his website (bobpaltrow.com) for any of your design needs, and go see his band for some cool, original rock (catslikeus.band). We cover his musical journey, some important wake up calls, how he started the Fieldboats, his new career path, Lopez Island and the festival he founded with Doug Poole called Lopez Uncovered Music Festival. Chris and his partner Heather's business, Inside Passage Counseling, is for couples, families and adults. Chris and I talked about his sobriety, and I wanted to mention this valuable point,"Relapse is an important part of sobriety". Lastly, he recommends attending AA meetings, and if that's something you're curious about, and you need support, I'll go with you (just ask).Enjoy your week, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music? S03 Ep023: Chad Henry

Chad Henry came over to the studio earlier this year to chat about life and his music. Find out how he found his bandmates, playing covers in Central Park, his Oklahoma day and what brought him to the west coast. Most importantly, experience the moment we became best friends over our mutual love and respect for Roger Clyne. We quote lyrics from a Peacemakers song (Lemons):"Bring on the changelet's keep it simple nowdon't confuse your wants with your needs.Believe in Love,Forsake your greed,And give away what you want to receive."These words are displayed on my classroom door. I hope that students and staff read them often as they pass.Chad's band doesn't play that often, so be sure to check them out on 5/16 at the Shakedown with Seattle's Jaws of Brooklyn and Bellingham's Asa Menlove. S03 Ep021: Andy Brown

Andy Brown visited my studio two weeks ago. It's rare to have an episode get published after two weeks (especially with 15 recordings in the queue), but that's one word to describe my guest: rare! No one can hold a candle to Andy Brown and the incredible projects he's been apart of, The amount of stories he brings to the table is endless. Learn about his parents, musical journey and hear us speak from the heart about our local music scene. Find Andy at a show (probably helping set up, do sound or pack up, even if he's not playing) and tell him how much you appreciate his contribution to our community. S03 Ep017: Michelle Montoya

Michelle Montoya sat down with me in the studio recently to chat about music and life. We laughed a lot, shared stories of our pasts and families, and I learned a lot about her path to being the lead singer of Gin Gypsy. A new version of that band is currently in the works and whenever their debut show is schedule, I'll be sure to promote it. This episode weaves through all sorts of topics, but I want to stress that so much of her current musical project is unknown. She knew she wanted to jam with these amazing people (Sonny, Jesse and Miguel) and so that's what they are doing. I love that! I hope that passion to make art without a clear path ahead inspires someone else.Be sure to listen to the end, you'll be treated to Michelle and Eli covering John Prine's Angel from Montgomery.Follow the band on Instagram hereSupport Gin Gypsy's previous releases on Amazon MusicEnjoy your week, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music? I met Stone Jones at the Prospect Theater in the Fall of 2023. I've seen him here and there at shows and it was a pleasure to sit down and get to know his incredible backstory. I encourage everyone in the music scene (Whatcom and Skagit) to listen to this episode if you know him, and if you don't, it's more reason to listen to it and say hi to Stone at his next show. He mentions so many dear friends of his, I can't list them all but I'm pretty sure a lot of them will be future podcast guests. Contact Stone if you need a spot to record your new music, and we appreciate him for inspiring us to start our own recording studio, Fidalgo Street Studios (Don't contact us about recording, give us a year or so. Jeff Mack came over in December of 2024 to chat about music and life. He credits his recent music resurgence to our mutual talented friend, Hannah Wyatt. You can find his album online. He plays "I Am The Morning" at the end of our chat. It's becoming not so uncommon to find an artist who has taken a decade long break and found their way again. I hope someone hears this and is inspired to pick that tool back up (whether it's a pen, guitar or paintbrush, and gift their talents to the world again). I admire the hell out of Izzy and I can't wait to read her book one day. S03 Ep04: Phil Carter

Phil Carter is a local drummer from Bellingham, though, as we discovered on the podcast, he was born in Canada. I cut out hours of us talking about hockey, Tim Horton's and the Hip and left in some stories that Phil shared about touring, playing in his son's band, brushes with death and his current musical focus, Cory Vincent and the Electric Band. They are recording a live concert on 11/9/24 at the Muse in Conway. Grab your tickets here for this unique event (check out his bandmates' episodes too: Charlie, Cory). Phil's son is in a band called Spider Cult. Follow their Instagram here and support their upcoming gigs.Enjoy your week, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music? S03 Ep03: Kelly Beane

Kelly Beane is an enthusiastic local hiker who wrote an inspiring book about her adventures. She also writes a blog called "Slowest Hiker". Head to her blog to read about her most recent hikes and marvel at her amazing photos. I hope that this episode encourages someone to step out of their comfort zone and push themselves to try something new. Kelly's book is available on Amazon (send it to someone you love this holiday season). We also mention the Dimes, which is her husband Ken's band.Enjoy your week, be of use, and go do something hard.Love music?
