44 - Mid/Whole Life Crisis
The idea of a midlife crisis is a little old hat these days. Especially when there's so much room for crisis across everything lately.Despite this, Chris finds utility in scratching at the ideas behind a midlife crisis, and exploring how we can find status anxiety and pain-dividends coming from our less examined choices at any age.Could it be that it's harder to live aligned to our values and interests than it used to be? It's a bold claim and impossible to test, but certainly interesting to explore. Ultimately, the collective impact of individual wellbeing is big and important enough to at least wonder how we might help each other to do a little better in our lives, one small ferrari at a time.Life, Regrets, Grand Proclamations: it's all in here baby and we're back with another instant classic!Chapters00:00 Reflections on Turning 4101:32 The Concept of Midlife Crisis03:38 The Weight of Life Decisions05:22 Navigating Relationships and Commitments06:45 The Importance of Self-Awareness08:04 Contemporary Life and Identity Crises09:52 The Impact of Social Media on Self-Perception11:05 Finding Peace in Decision-Making12:46 The Challenge of Modern Existence25:14 Thanks Patrons!----------------------------------------------------------Support the show at patreon.com/endreyFollow on instagram @chrisendreypodcast

43 - Killing Without Accountability
The AI revolution is here!Fortunately, it's easier than ever for me to generate chapter markings my episodes. Unfortunately, leading militaries of the world have systematised killing in a way that is increasingly indistinct from dystopian science fiction. In a time where so much attention is given to the catastrophic court politics of a mad king, let's take a happy break by noting the new technological context in which various horrors are occurring.Though I am flippant in the caption, I am very serious in thinking that it is our duty as citizens of this world to understand just how far we have already detached from certain levers of violence, and to appreciate how critical it will be to urgently improve our systems in the interest of maximising for peaceful lives where we can enjoy good sports, good meals and maybe even a good 43-episode victory lap of The Chris Endrey Podcast.Chapters00:00 The Disconnect in Modern Democracy04:54 Historical Context of Genocide and Accountability10:34 AI in Modern Warfare: The Lavender AI Case15:30 The Future of Autonomous Warfare and Accountability24:07 Thanks Patrons! If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show as a patron at patreon.com/endreyFollow on instagram at @chrisendreypodcast ----------'The Machine Did It Coldly': Israel used AI to identify 37,000 Hamas targetshttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/03/israel-gaza-ai-database-hamas-airstrikes

42 - Australian Censorship
In a recent episode on civilisational-level lies, I mentioned that we incorrectly assume that we have freedom of speech in Australia.Mere weeks later, and there are a handful of absurd enforcements of new laws that scrape out the truth of how increasingly vulnerable that freedom is.There is a real ugliness to the full spectrum of human experience and ideas, and that is something that we need to collectively reckon with to protect a society worth living in. But that ugliness doesn't simply go away because you tell it to, and trying to simply wish it away may well risk doing more harm than good.Strap on in, it's episode time!Chapters00:00 The Reactive Nature of Modern Politics03:26 Censorship and Its Implications in Australia06:44 Legislative Responses to Hate Speech10:18 The Consequences of Banning Symbols and Phrases12:14 Censorship in Everyday Life23:50 The Future of Free Expression in a Digital Age29:18 The Importance of Open DiscourseThanks patrons! 41 - Navigating Chaos: Finding Joy When Everything Feels Broken
I imagine that at some point I will get tired of saying that the world is changing at an exponential rate. But that point will have to wait, because this episode takes the observable chaos of the zeitgeist - the Epstein files, Venezuelan kidnapping, war in Iran, the AI takover, energy crises, etc. etc. - and begins to map a path back to the joys and meaning that transcends even the most frustrating times.Spending time with friends and family, eating well, exercising in nature, broadening your horizons by learning and teaching.None of it should be too surprising. But in times like these, holding onto some core truths might end up being the most important thing of all. 40 - Values vs. Behaviour: The Path to Ruin
We are all riddled with contradiction. Whether in our view of ourselves or the world - life and society seems to be an ongoing process of navigating, failing, correcting and re-asserting flawed understandings of reality. It's an inevitable and important part of navigating a world in which we don't have anything near approaching perfect perception or understanding - and a world in which no two of us share the same viewpoint on everything. But despite this inevitability, the rate at which we succeed or fail to identify these inconsistencies matters. Because the larger the gap for the greater period of time - the harder the correction will likely be.Hearkening back to the episode on the lies we tell ourselves, this time Chris revisits the topic at a civilisational level. And with so many of our core stated values being exposed as mere words with the daily news of the middle eastern wars, Epstein files, Trump administration overreach and expansion of extra-judicial tech surveillance on all fronts - it might be as important a time to look truthfully in the mirror as there has been in a long while.Chapters00:00 Exploring Lies and Their Consequences03:10 Values vs. Behaviour: A Personal Reflection06:47 Cognitive Dissonance: Navigating Inconsistencies09:56 The Impact of Societal Values on Individual Behaviour13:00 Case Studies: Environmentalism and Political Promises15:01 The Fragility of Civilisational Values15:40 Democracy and Its Discontents15:40 The Illusion of Justice17:08 Cognitive Dissonance in Society18:20 The Consequences of Ignoring Reality19:54 The Role of Individual Responsibility21:53 Looking Ahead: Hope and Action24:25 Thanks Patrons!Support the show at patreon.com/endreyFollow on instagram @chrisendreypodcast

38 - Catastrophe!
The USA and Israel have interrupted their negotiations with the Iranians to rain bombs across the country, killing the country's leadership and inflicting the inevitable horrors of 'collateral damage'.Refusing to play along, the Iranian regime has not collapsed, and is retaliating by firing missiles upon US bases across the gulf. After many decades of champing at the bit, the ardent hawks of Washington and Israel finally have their war with Iran. So, what comes next?Between a feckless American political class who rode into power off a MAGA movement explicitly promising 'no more wars', and a furious theocracy looking to avenge their martyred Ayatollah in an existential fight - this war really could go anywhere.Add in a looming energy crisis and shamefully obsequious Europe/UK, and we really are risking the worst of all fates: more geopolitical podcast episodes from me, neglecting the stated preferences of my patrons.patreon.com/endrey - tell a friend to sign up today!Chapters00:00 Introduction: The Escalating Middle East Conflict00:42 Historical Background of US and Iran Tensions01:12 The Strategic Goals Behind US and Israeli Actions01:41 Potential Outcomes and Long-term Consequences01:54 The Role of International Law and Global Response02:22 Iran's Preparedness and Response Strategies03:28 The Impact on Regional Stability and Borders04:09 Energy Markets and Global Economic Risks05:14 Diplomacy, Negotiations, and Missed Opportunities06:21 The Risks of Escalation to Nuclear Conflict07:39 The International Community's Response and Hypocrisy08:58 The Broader Implications for International Law10:02 Iran's Military Capabilities and Potential Escalation11:12 The Danger of Uncontrollable Escalation12:40 The Threat of Nuclear War and Global Catastrophe13:51 The Hypocrisy of Western Leadership and Media16:06 The Future of Middle East Borders and Power Dynamics18:02 Potential Collapse of Iranian Society and Regional Chaos18:35 The Economic and Human Cost of War21:09 The Erosion of International Norms and Morality22:47 Lessons from Past Conflicts and the Path Forward22:59 Remembering Kashia Faumui

37 - The Insanity of Knowing
A quirk of our species seems to be that when we encounter new information that sufficiently challenges our perception of the world - we reject it. And yet, our collective perception of how the world works is constantly being rewritten. This often comes at great cost to those who come bearing uncomfortable news.Hypatia, Copernicus, Galileo - you can always tell a pioneer from the arrows in their back.In this episode, Chris explores the inevitability of such step shifts in the context of the Epstein files. In such a dynamic time, what such shifts are likely to come, and are we ready to hear them?Chapters00:00 Understanding the Dunning-Kruger Effect02:47 Cognitive Dissonance and Outlier Information06:22 Resistance to New Ideas and Identity10:55 Feeling Alienated by Unconventional Thoughts13:57 Navigating a Complex World of Change16:19 The Glyphosate Debate and Health Implications20:11 The Epstein Files and the Nature of Power24:23 Thanks Patrons!Support the show at patreon.com/endreyFollow us on instagram @chrisendreypodcast

36 - Understanding Epstein in Context
The Epstein scandal is so large that it can feel impossible to grapple with. Is it about sexual abuse? Political corruption? Transhumanism? Satanism? International finance? Geopolitics? Spy games? All of the above? You can see the full range of responses. Ignorance, indifference, outrage, skepticism, denial. It feels as though each file of the 3 million released needs its own world of context to properly understand. In this episode, Chris Endrey delves into some elements of the scandal and draws on historical touchstones to help to better orient to exactly what it is that is being revealed through each pixel. This leads back to the safety of known incidents to explore themes of cognitive dissonance, the use of blackmail in politics, and the historical prevalence of power and corruption. He discusses how institutions fail to hold powerful individuals accountable - often by design - and examines the psychological aspects of exploitation and manipulation within these systems. It's a great time to join the patreon, with a patrons-only episode reviewing additional files from the release coming up later this week.CHAPTERS00:00 The Epstein Scandal: An Overview03:20 Cognitive Dissonance and Historical Context05:51 Blackmail and Political Control10:30 The Nature of Power and Corruption15:56 Collusion Across Enemy Lines25:43 Understanding Psychopathy in Power Dynamics28:43 Thanks patrons!Support the show: patreon.com/endreyFollow the instagram: @chrisendreypodcast

35 - Epstein Files: A Snapshot of Decay
The latest release of files relating to Jeffrey Epstein has further revealed a world of crime and influence that has sparked incredibly fierce outrage and investigation in some quarters. But in others, conspicuous silence. As the world pores over more than 3 million documents, a picture is slowly emerging of a man who spanned a transnational network of political, social and financial elites bound by influence, power, sexual friendships and, in alarming measures, a shared bond of sexual abuses, human trafficking, and other crimes. These pixels of that portrait have long been held by the FBI and US Attorney General, who have offered the public denials that they even exist. Just this week, FBI Director Kash Patel stated that now that the files have been released, no further investigations or prosecutions are needed. This comes in tandem with a media landscape that is seemingly only interested at the palace dramas of the periphery - who cheated on their wife, who lied about visiting the island, etc. This is a bizarre response to what must be considered the greatest scandal of the century. So, where to from here?In this episode, Chris explores the social landscape of this latest release, and considers questions of the cost that will be paid as the legitimacy of our rules, institutions and zeitgeist are perhaps stretched beyond their limit. Thanks as always to show supporters, please consider joining them at patreon.com/endreyAnd follow the show on instagram @chrisendreypodcast

31 - Okay, I'll Fix Democracy
Do we live in democracies? Sort of. As a song competition, Eurovision is inevitably dramatic. And, despite its stated rules, inevitably political.Russia and Belarus are out. Israel is in (for now). Canada might be too?A bloc of countries are threatening to boycott should Israel participate next year. But they're being met by a counter-bloc threatening to boycott if Israel are excluded!Meanwhile, rival song competition 'Intervision' has been re-established to offer a 'non-woke' alternative. But these divisions aren't limited to mere singing competitions, and fittingly map the fault lines of a world that seems to be increasingly at war with itself.Chapters00:00 Eurovision's Historical Context and Cultural Significance00:47 Cultural Divides and Participation Issues05:09 Financial Barriers and Their Impact on Participation06:19 Political Controversies: Israel's Participation and Reactions10:06 The Future of Eurovision Amidst Global Tensions18:31 The Global Arena: Unity in Diversity18:35 Cultural Representation and Belonging18:39 Cultural Divides in Eurovision18:55 The Role of Ideology in Music Competitions25:08 Thanks Patrons!IG: @chrisendreypodcastSupport: patreon.com/endrey

27 - Moral Warfare!
It feels good to lay the blame - and it could be ruining us. Our species evolved in a context where quick decisions that are right most of the time are far more valuable than slower decisions that are right all of the time. But what was a critical need for survival then, can be in many ways a a disaster for us today. There are numerous known biases that routinely misdirect us when trying to understand the world. In many realms of cognition, it appears that simplified misattribution is the norm. But where we take our misattributions as a chance to prosecute rivals, we start to terminally stray from understanding the world.Whether it's sexism, bad traffic, environmental destruction or war in the middle east - it feels good to know who is responsible. Especially when it's not us. But we can't fully understand complex problems with simple readings - and it's very hard to solve problems that you don't understand.Join Chris for an exploration of moral warfare and come to realise that the true obvious enemies of us all are the people who don't listen to the Chris Endrey Podcast.Chapters00:00 Understanding Human Limitations03:59 The Nature of Moral Warfare07:32 Complexity of Social Issues10:09 Conflict and Responsibility13:28 The Challenge of Moral Clarity15:53 Distraction from Real Issues20:44 The Dangers of Moral Warfare25:30 Understanding Our Fixations and Their Roots27:58 Thanks Patrons!IG: @chrisendreypodcastSUPPORT: patreon.com/endrey

26 - The Freedom Paradox: In Praise of Constraints
It's happened so quickly that it can be hard to remember sometimes just how powerful we've become. We can conjure in an instant information, work or connections that would have taken hours, weeks or even months just a few decades ago. This gives us new freedom to manipulate the world and our lives, but this freedom is only as useful as our capacity to move through it. Without boundaries, it is easier than ever to get lost in the sea of possibilities. Those boundaries can either be set consciously in a way that serves us, or they can be maximal limits inherited from interests that have nothing to do with our wellbeing. In this episode, Chris explores the context for this upheaval and the utility of constraints that we will all need to thrive against the growing tide.Chapters00:00 The Role of Constraints in Creativity07:22 Navigating Modern Life with Conscious Choices19:41 Conclusion: Embracing Constraints for Clarity33:06 Thanks Patrons!Instagram: @chrisendreypodcastSupport: patreon.com/endrey

25 - Lessons from Parenthood
On Christmas Day a few years ago I became a father for the first time and it truly was the greatest gift imaginable. We were lucky enough to have another baby since then, and I spend a significant part of every single day in awe of how great it all is. But it's possible that that's just the Stockholm syndrome and chronic sleep deprivation talking. In either case, I put the idea of reflecting upon the major lessons learned since becoming a parent up against some 20 other exotic topics for my patrons to vote upon, and this was a clear winner. The lessons broadly surround the transitions into parenthood are, the nature of control and expectation, managing competing priorities and the broader sweeping contextual changes of growing a family in the modern age.I believe it's an episode that has broader life philosophies at its core and will be interesting whether you are amongst those thinking about having kids; have kids of your own; or would simply never consider foregoing that much sleep. So thanks for joining me and please, strap in and enjoy!Chapters00:00 Intro and Context02:57 Major Lessons from Early Parenting12:46 The Role of Parents and Societal Changes17:52 Navigating Parenthood Across Generations22:21 The Impact of Community on Parenting24:52 Physical and Mental Transformations in Parenthood28:16 Embracing Individual Differences in Children31:05 Reprioritising Life Goals?34:29 Reflections on Challenges35:06 Thanks Patrons!Instagram: @chrisendreypodcastSupport: patreon.com/endrey

In this episode, Chris Endrey delves into one of the lesser-discussed chapters of American history - the eugenics movement across the first half of the 20th century. He discusses the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the role of prominent institutions in promoting eugenics, and the many forced sterilisations that occurred under this ideology. The conversation also explores the critical connections between American eugenics and Nazi Germany, as well as the impact of these ideas on immigration policies. Through the case of Carrie Buck, the episode highlights the human cost of these policies and reflects upon the importance of understanding these historical atrocities to prevent their recurrence.Chapters00:00 Introduction04:21 Eugenics: A Historical Overview07:36 The Rise of Eugenics in America12:48 The Impact of Eugenics Legislation17:05 Connections Between American and Nazi Eugenics19:05 The Impact of Eugenics on Immigration Policies22:06 The Case of Carrie Buck: A Personal Tragedy24:46 Reflections on Historical Hubris and Modern Implications28:25 Thanks Patrons!Follow along on instagram @chrisendreypodcastSupport the show at patreon.com/endrey

23 - The Dangerously Routine Traps of Statistics
The authority that we give to people wielding data is frightening and routinely disastrous. In this episode, Chris explores the common traps and pitfalls associated with leaning too heavily upon statistics, emphasising the importance of understanding correlation versus causation, the misuse of averages, and the need for context in interpreting data. A quick tour with examples from divorce and SSRI rates, private vs public education and the survivorship bias and the McNamara fallacy - this layman's exploration highlights the dangers of relying on statistics without critical examination. After all, there are some domains in which we are best off simply embracing uncertainty and being very wary of claims that conflate certain data with absolute truth.Chapters00:00 Intro01:32 Understanding the Misuse of Statistics03:24 Correlation vs. Causation: The Common Pitfall06:25 The Complexity of Education Statistics10:06 Divorce Rates and Misleading Averages13:18 The Dangers of Oversimplifying Data14:56 Comparing Statistics Across Time and Contexts16:13 Understanding Real Income and Inflation17:05 The Importance of Context in Data Interpretation18:13 Misleading Statistics in Mental Health Reporting19:22 The Complexity of SSRI Usage Data20:39 The Dangers of Misapplying Policies Across Cultures23:45 Silent Evidence and Survivorship Bias25:29 The McNamara Fallacy in Data Interpretation28:29 The Need for Critical Thinking in Statistical Analysis31:03 Embracing Uncertainty in Complex Domains32:39 Thanks Patrons!Join the fun at patreon.com/endreyIG: @chrisendreypodcast

22 - Status Anxiety + Elite Overproduction
What happens when there more people than seats at the table?Peter Turchin predicted an increase in political instability for this decade due, in part, to a phenomenon he describes as 'elite overproduction'.Having touched upon this topic last week in exploring the context of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, in this episode, Chris explores the broader contextual drivers of social dissatisfaction.Could it be that roadblocks to pursuing meaningful work and leisure are intertwined with societal dissatisfaction and unrest? The conversation delves into the role of education, the absence of strong social orders, and the importance of skills that contribute to personal fulfillment. 19 - Australia Is Still A Colony
Is Australia still a colony? It might sound like a trivial question, but a quick scratch of the surface suggests there's a lot more to it than mere semantics.Chris delves into the complexities of Australia's colonial legacy, the impact of foreign ownership on national sovereignty, and a cultural identity heavily defined by external influences. All of these leave a heavy thumbprint on issues of real consequence for Australians today. Australia's military involvements, the illusion of democracy, weird economic disparities, and the significant role of corporate influence in undermining political accountability. Where these problems are unique to Australia, there will need to be a uniquely Australian way of solving them. Chris contends, that as long as the keys to the wellbeing of Australians are held by outside parties, Australia risks remaining subject to the misaligned and indifferent whims of its colonial masters.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Colonial Australia01:13 Cultural Identity and Autonomy in Australia01:27 Invisible Colonial Mindset and Its Implications02:07 Australia: A Modern Colony?08:57 The US-Australia Relationship: A Junior Partnership17:28 Democracy and Autonomy: A Critical Examination22:24 Corporate Colonization: The Loss of Sovereignty23:52 The Global Shift of Power27:56 Corporate Influence on Government31:18 The Erosion of Public Accountability37:31 Thanks patrons!

18 - Culture Lag
The world changes so quickly these days that it usually takes us a moment to catch up. This dynamism means that operating with old assumptions can be risky, but also offers big arbitrage benefits for those who are quick to acknowledge and understand the shifts. It's hard to believe, but in many ways, the year 1400 was more similar to 1700, than 2000 was to 2025.This has big implications for us today, as we need to constantly update our plans and thinking to navigate changes across our own lives.Where it would be reasonable to shoot for home ownership and a nice steady career just a generation ago, these things will elude huge swathes of us today. These changes alone have an enormous impact on how young people should plan for the future. But there are many thousands of these shifts happening a unique rate, and I think it's clear to see that our culture is struggling to keep up.In this episode, Chris scans across these changes - from tourism to gift-giving - and looks at some of the pitfalls and arbitrage opportunities as we step constantly into a pretty radical new reality.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Context of Change02:03 Cultural Lag and Individual Behavior03:10 Adapting to New Norms and Future Planning03:52 Cultural Lag and Planning for the Future08:53 The Evolution of Careers in a Changing World14:19 Family Planning in Uncertain Times17:42 The Changing Landscape of Travel and Tourism24:00 The Changing Nature of Money30:09 Rethinking Gift Giving in Modern Society32:25 The Changing Landscape of Education37:51 Redefining Value in Learning and Life42:32 Thanks!Support the show by joining at patreon.com/endreyFollow on instagram @chrisendreypodcast

17 - A Lost War
'The First Casualty of War Is Truth'.In the fog of lies that surround the wars of our time, are there critical lessons that we are failing to learn? As the Ukraine-Russia war rolls through its fourth year, its accompanying destruction and misery continue apace. With the biggest players of the international arena dedicating so much time, energy and political capital to the conflict, how is it that drones and bombs are still scarring eastern Europe in 2025?It's easy to reduce conflicts to 'winners' and 'losers', when of course, there are millions who have already lost everything on both sides.Chris reflects upon the lasting damage from a war that could easily have been over in April 2022. Exploring the missed windows for peace only further emphasises what a needless tragedy this war continues to be. Ultimately, by interrogating it honestly, we can better understand and navigate similar situations in the future to prevent such tragedies from repeating.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction to the Conflict10:15 - The Role of Western Influence20:30 - The Cost of War30:45 Narratives and Misinformation 40:00 Missed Paths for Peace50:15 Importance of TruthIf you want to have a say in future episodes, please join the community at patreon.com/Endrey - there are both free and paid tiers of participation. We also post episodes and shorts at @chrisendreypodcast on instagramThanks to our loyal patrons! How different would our lives be if we were able to be honest with each other about all things at all times?Chris explores some of the common lies we tell and the consequences they can have on our lives, relationships, and society. By touring through some anecdotes and classic examples, we see how quickly small lies can accumulate and lead to problems far greater than those that the lies were designed to protect against. The price is not only interpersonal, with society struggling under political and information systems that all-but invite lies, with all the attached costs of eroded public trust.By exploring the importance of honesty and touring through instances where it slips, it emerges that striving for truth - no matter how uncomfortable - is ultimately the best option when facing the headwinds that inevitably come for all lives and civilisations.Chapters00:00 The Nature of Lies02:04 Cultural Perspectives on Lying03:42 Personal Experiences with Lies05:46 The Consequences of White Lies07:46 The Cost of Pretending10:02 Escalating Misalignments11:25 The Burden of Lies13:30 The Importance of Honesty15:45 Learning from Lies20:37 The Consequences of Lies26:42 Lying in Politics35:57 The Civilisational Impact of Lies39:59 The Subtle Lies We Live By39:59 Moralising Preferences and Its Pitfalls40:34 The Impact of Small Lies on Life40:50 The Impact of Societal Lies42:53 The Consequences of Certainty in Society43:12 Media Trust and Its Consequences43:12 PatronsIG: @chrisendreypodcastpatreon.com/endrey

What if we never have another scientific breakthrough again? It's a dramatic question designed to keep you reading and not at all likely - but it does get to the sexy heart of the unsexy question for this week's episode - are we going about science the wrong way?The tools we use, the incentive systems we build, and the limits of the discipline itself all shape how effectively we can come up with new scientific discoveries. 8 - Is This Democracy? Unpacking Australia's Dull Election
In this episode of The Chris Endrey Podcast, we dig into the world of Australian democracy during a curiously lacklustre election season. Why does our political discourse feel so bland when there’s so much at stake? The never-ending housing crisis, rising global conflict, and dynamic tech revolutions all framing declining wellbeing in one of the richest societies in world history? Chris unpacks the gap between what democracy could be and what it is, exploring how short-term political incentives, the influence of powerful incumbents, and a disconnected political class fail to address the big issues facing Australia. From the housing catastrophe to the silent commitment to war, gambling addiction, and the AI revolution, this episode is a call to rethink representation and face the challenges that will inevitably sweep our society one way or another.Chapters:Introduction: A Dull Election in a World of Chaos (00:00 - ~02:00)Democracy’s Illusion: Are We Really Represented? 7 - Dr Georgie Harriss: Writing, Trauma & Creative Freedom
Can creative writing be pleasurable without being redemptive? This week's episode is a conversation with writer and academic Dr Georgie Harriss, who has somehow gone from receiving rubbish from the set of Real Housewives of Melbourne to writing comedy scripts, plays, and researching trauma and queer narrative theory. These are fun viewpoints of the world that most of us don’t get to see at all, let alone in combination.Taking full advantage, we dig into:The psychodrama of reality TV production and the spreadsheets behind itWhy “conflict equals story” is a deeply Western—and limiting—ideaWhether artists really need to suffer (emphatic no)How narrative has been co-opted as a commodityThe absurd dance of Australian arts grant fundingAlong the way, we touch on the tyranny of screenwriting rooms, the decay of shared cultural narratives, and the strange dissonance of writing for the sake of grant applications that ask if your play will solve climate change. 5 - What Are We Building Here?
In this solo episode, Chris outlines the world he's trying to frame here by exploring the themes and ideas that he keeps coming back to in life. From a desire to platform unheard voices, uncovering the silent evidence that is so often ignored by popular public discourse, and a deep interest in interrogating how we live, create, and structure our society. Over time this will be a place to hear from public figures on unexpected angles and ordinary people with extraordinary insights. All driven by a deep interest in how we live, what we overlook, and what matters. It's terrible news for the show's marketing, but hopefully good news for the audience. There will be no single topic, but plenty of recurring themes: navigating the world as a highly creative personthe enshittification of everything;the critical importance (and current absence) of right-brain thinking in improving society;the gap between how things are now and how good things could be; and the depolarising power of discourse that doesn’t fit neatly into commercial formats. If you’ve ever wondered, 'Why does everything feel a bit broken?' — or if you just want a discourse that values intelligent thinking and deep curiosity — we hope you feel welcome here!As always, there is an open invitation to shape what comes next by getting in touch with us through any of our channels.🎧 New episodes every Tuesday! 1 - Dr Jamie Freestone: The Future of Humanity
These are strange times to live in. The human race's entire knowledge base is at our fingertips; we can call almost anyone on the planet instantly; anyone can access free AI to solve our problems; and there are seemingly any number of incredible scientific breakthroughs just on the horizon. For all this, the shifts that mark contemporary life often don't feel magical at all. Worse, they often feel annoying. So, what are the technologies that are most likely to change our future, and how close might they be?Diving into these questions with Chris, is our show's first guest: Dr Jamie Freestone, a post-doctoral fellow at the Australian National University working on the philosophy of autonomous systems.Jamie publishes regularly at The Stark Way on Substack, exploring not only technology and science but many of the most interesting problems of our time with both warmth and his generous expertise. In this thought-provoking conversation, Chris Endrey and Jamie Freestone dive into the future of humanity. They discuss CRISPR and genetic engineering, the challenges of geoengineering, and whether biotechnology will drive more change than information technology. The conversation touches on AI governance, autonomous vehicles, and democratic technologies—and whether these innovations will lead us toward utopia or dystopia.Key Topics: ✔️ The promise and peril of breakthrough technologies ✔️ Longevity and mortality—can we hack human biology? ✔️ CRISPR & genetic modification—the next frontier in science ✔️ Geoengineering & fusion power—game-changers or disasters waiting to happen? ✔️ AI governance & democratic technologies—can they fix our broken systems? ✔️ Self-driving cars, domestic robots & urban life—how our cities will evolveThis show only exists because of Chris' Patreon patrons.
