Welcome to The FCA Guy Podcast where we talk sports + faith. Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a faith-based ministry to coaches and athletes. Our Mission: To lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and the local church.Each week, I will interview local coaches on a segment we call "Coffee with Coach". During this time we get to know the coach in a casual environment. From time to time, I will interview special guests that have a great testimony and impact in my life or the lives of others.This is a good space to hear from coaches and be encouraged. Each podcast should be approximately 20 +/- minutes - enough time to enjoy during your daily commute.

Episode 25 Coach Sam Carlin "Different Seat" Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Moe "Buda" Johnson High School
For 18 years, Coach Carlin has been an educator and coach. Recently, Beginning on December 16, 2024, Coach Carlin has a "different seat" at the coaches table. He was officially named Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator after serving as the interim head coach during the 2024 football season. This is Coach Carlin's 3rd year at Buda Johnson.A San Antonio native, Coach Carlin served on several staffs before arriving at Buda Johnson. This is his first stint as a head coach and what a way to start. Coach guided the Buda Johnson Jaguars to their first 6A playoff appearance to become Bi-District and Area Champions. Hear Coach Carlin describe why "Buda" Johnson and the phrase "Big Cat Country". We also discussed the impact of NIL and portal? Is it coming to high schools? Episode 24 Brad Thomas "Not Done Yet" Lead Pastor Austin Ridge Bible Church
Great time visiting with a long-time friend and Lead Pastor Austin Ridge Bible Church. Brad and I first met in 1995 while we were both working at Northwest Bible Church in Dallas.Listen how FCA was a part of his spiritual journey and a FCA staffer, Fouad Faris, invited Brad into a discipleship relationship - which meant meeting at 5:45AM. A big commitment for a college student.Fast forward to 2024, Brad will celebrate 20 years at Austin Ridge Bible Church (aka Westlake Bible Church) this July. Learn how the term "lugnuts" came about. A term he uses frequently to describe himself and sinners alike - a term of endearment. Brad is not without his own challenges and struggles which he shares regarding his son Luke and his own health. Luke is a special needs young man that needs 24/7 attention. The Lord in not done with Brad. Most recently, he suffered a double stroke. As he continues to recover, the good Lord continue to use Brad to deliver God's message.As an avid golfer, Brad actually had two hole-in-ones in one round. Great story! Listen as he shares the title of a book everyone should read and the first verse he learned.Brad and his wife, Courtney, have a daughter that recently graduated from UT and is now works for EY in Dallas. Brad cherishes his weekly date night with Courtney, a non-negotiable. Enjoy hearing from Brad - God is not done with him!

Episode 23 Cade Pharis "On a Whim and a Prayer" Varsity Football Video Coordinator, Basketball and Tennis Coach Wimberley High School
Driving back from a coaches conference in Houston, on a "whim" Coach Pharis decided to drive through Wimberley. When a teaching opportunity became available, Coach Pharis submitted his name. In 2014, Coach Pharis began his career in Wimberley. Similar to Coach Warren, Head CoachFootball, both have only coached at two schools.Coach Cade began his teaching/ coaching career in Brownfield (2010 -2014), now he currently serves as a varsity basketball and tennis coach as well as the video coordinator for the varsity football program. He is also the CTE Department Head.Coach Pharis grew up in West Texas between Abilene and Big Spring - Colorado City, Pop. 4000. He holds a BS in Organizational Leadership and Management and a Masters from UT Arlington. You many not know that Coach Pharis is an EMT and Trip Guide for DiscipleTrips. He has been an EMT since 2000 and a Trip Guide since 2000. Hear more about DiscipleTrips and his passion to lead others on mission trips. I asked, "Biggest challenges facing the education system?" Episode 22 Jon Rector "Using His Gifts" FCA Area Director East Travis and Bastrop Counties
Jon is gifted and uses his gift to advance the kingdom. Growing up in the Chicago area, as a middle schooler Jon knew the Lord but dedicated his life to serving the Lord while in college, where he met his wife Shanna. His dad was actually a sports radio host, pastor and served as a FCA Area Director. In fact, Jon was featured on his dad's blooper show and they co-hosted a sports radio show for a short while - The Ron and Jon Show. Jon has been with FCA for approximately four years. He has served as Executive Director of a non-profit, a pastor and current co-owns a coaching company with his Mom, Renew Coaching (www.renewchristiancoach.com). Listen and learn more. Jon and his wife, Shanna, have three precious kiddos. Both Jon and Shanna can be found on social media - posting FCA stories fun family pictures. Episode 21 Lynne Vallejo "Living by Prayer" FCA Area Representative South/ Southwest Austin
I learned a lot about Lynne during this podcast but there was one thing I already knew - she lives her life in prayer. To hear Lynne tell the story about Echo House and how God spoke to her through prayer and how she responded tells volumes about her steadfast commitment to serving the Lord. Listen to Lynne talk about her recent trip overseas and walking in the footsteps of Paul.Lynne recently became FCA full-time staff, overseeing the Dripping Springs ISD and Wimberley ISD. However, she is not a stranger to FCA. As a former middle school coach, Lynne served as the FCA huddle sponsor for several years. Her background as an athlete, teacher and administrator prepared her for this ministry opportunity with FCA.I also discovered that Lynne is quite the musical talent and a master gardener - who knew! Episode 20 Coach Jacob Kaase "Setting New Standards" Head Baseball Coach Lehman High School
In just three short seasons, Coach Kaase and the Lehman Baseball team are reaching goals and setting a new standard for Lobo baseball. Prior to coaching, Coach Kaase had a decorated college baseball career which landed him in the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022. In 2007, as a junior, Coach Kaase was drafted by the Texas Rangers, spending three years (2007-2010) in the MLB Minor Leagues.Interestingly, Coach Kaase was recruited by Division 1 schools as a quarterback out of high school. Ultimately, his love for baseball and opportunity to play at Texas Lutheran University was greater.When Coach Kaase accepted the head coaching role at Lehman, the AD at the time said, "Kaase has a never stop learning attitude and provides the best training and instruction for student-athletes." This has proven to be true. The Lehman Lobo baseball team has missed the the playoffs by a 1/2 game the past two seasons, where previously they had not had a winning season in a number of years.It's not all about baseball. Coach emphasizes the importance of "building young men." Character and becoming a better version of yourself each day is a foundation of his teaching and coaching. BTBAGB1% (Coach Kaase explains this on the podcast).Currently, the baseball and softball fields are under construction. Astroturf fields are replacing the current grass fields plus new dugouts and stands. In the meantime, his team is practicing on an adjacent field. Episode 19 Coach Harry Haggard "Coach's Impact on My Life" (Retired Football and Track Coach Gladewater High School)
A coach cared enough to invite me to a FCA huddle. It was at an FCA State Convention during high school that I accepted Christ. I am so thankful for Coach Haggard and his willingness to lead the FCA huddle at Gladewater High School.Listen to Coach Haggard talk about how an 0-10 season delivered clarity and direction. Coach Haggard and I arrived at Gladewater High School the same year, 1977, I was a Freshman and he was an assistant 9th Grade football coach. God had plans for both of us.Coach Haggard had coaching stints at Cuero, Hillsboro and Brussels, Capital of Belgium. Hear a great story how God guided him and Carol to Belgium and opened the doors to coach American football. After returning to the states, he was the Head Coach at New Boston before arriving at Gladewater High School.Little did I know how this relationship and introduction to Fellowship of Christian Athletes would change my life forever. Episode 18 Coach Marcus Winn Sr. "Passion for the Game of Life" (Head Coach Boys Varsity Basketball Lehman High School)
They say a smile can light up a room. If this is true, Coach Winn can light up a whole house. If you have ever met or seen Coach Winn, you will understand. His passion for the game of basketball and life (especially his daughter) are very evident from the first encounter with Coach. Coach Winn is actually from Austin, attending Del Valle High School, where he played multiple sports but basketball was his passion. He attended the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine on a basketball scholarship (2008-2012). He later received his Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of New England, also. As a player, his team set many schools records including a conference championship. In 2021, Coach Winn was hired as the Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball program at Lehman High School. "Coach Winn brings a strong basketball background, high level of energy and passion for the game" - Lehman HS Facebook. Not only does he enjoy the game of basketball, he loves working with the kids, the student-athletes. Coach Winn understands the importance of school, therefore, he maintains his athletes hold certain standards in the classroom. Episode 17 Coach Emerald Amen "Bringing a Winning Culture" (Head Girls Basketball Coach/ Assistant AD Lehman High School)
Coach Emerald Amen brings a "winning culture" to Lehman High School. Coach Amen is the new Girls Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director. Prior to Lehman, she spent 10 years at Stephen F. Austin High School (Austin High Maroons). While at Austin High School, Coach Amen was 3X Coach of the Year and 3X 6A District Champions. The Lady Lobos are off to a great start. Coach Amen challenges her players on and off the court. Coach Amen is an Austinite playing at Crockett High School before attending Texas A&M, where she studied kinesiology. The youngest of four sisters, sports has always been a presence and part of her life. In fact, she played football when she was in middle school.Her faith has played a major source of strength and confirmation in her life. Episode 16 Coach Doug Warren "More than Winning" (Head Football Coach/ AD Wimberley High School)
Not many coaches have achieved the level of success Coach Warren has achieved, 100 wins as a head coach. However, life is "more than winning", it is winning at life.Coach Warren comes from a family of coaches. His brother, Steve, won a 5A State Title at Abilene High, His father, Jim, was a longtime coach at Plains High. However, Coach Warren did not initially want to be a coach. Coach Warren has only coached at three schools. Eighteen seasons with the Wimberley Texans, 11 of them as Head Coach. This season, he hit a milestone - 100 wins as a head coach. Coach Warren is more than a football coach or athletic director, he is a man of faith. We talk about success, what it means and what it looks like. Episode 15 Dr. Eric Wright (Superintendent Hays CISD)
Meet Dr. Wright, Superintendent Hays CISD. Dr. Wright became the superintendent on January 1, 2018. He began his career as a classroom teacher and coach in 1989. Prior to becoming the superintendent at Hays CISD, Dr. Wright was the Superintendent for Fredericksburg ISD.Since 2017, Hays CISD has grown from approximately 19,900 students to approximately 24,200. By 2035, Hays CISD is forecasted to have nearly 35,000 students.Dr. Wright is tasked with managing this growth. Hays CISD is the largest employer in the area that includes 25 campuses with more scheduled/ projected to be built. Hear about future growth plans.Dr. Wright has spent almost 50% of his professional career as a superintendent. His father and grandfather were both superintendents. He grew up in East Texas and attending Stephen F Austin where he received his undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees.Enjoy getting to know Dr. Wright.

Episode 14 Coach Caleb Swyers (Defensive Line and Wrestling Coach Lehman High School)
Meet Coach Caleb Swyers, Defensive Line and Wrestling Coach at Lehman High School. Coach Swyers is in his first year at Lehman, prior to Lehman he coached in Floresville, TX. Coach Swyers graduated from Churchill High School in San Antonio and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. He graduated with a degree in Sports Management and started working for the CC Hooks Baseball Team (Astro affiliate) then returned to San Antonio to work for the Missions Baseball Team. Soon after, Coach Swyers realized his interest and desire to coach. He received his teaching certification and entered the coaching world. Not only is Coach Swyers a football coach, he is also the head wrestling coach. Coach Swyers is married and has four kids. He actually meet his wife in high school but didn't date until he returned to San Antonio. Episode 13 Lance Moffett (Athletic Director Hays CISD)
Meet the Hays CISD Athletic Director, Lance Moffett. Prior to becoming the Athletic Director, he was the Head Coach at Fredericksburg High School. In addition to his role as Athletic Director, he also serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) which has a membership of nearly 25,000 Texas coaches. The motto for the THSCA is "Helping Coaches, Help Kids". Ultimately, the Athletic Director serves 200 coaches in the Hays CISD. Lance explains the bond process, current athletic facility upgrades and Jumbotron sponsorships at Bob Shelton Stadium.Lance has been married for 30 years and considers this one of his greatest accomplishments. He has two children, both of which are working on college campuses, Blake, Colorado State Pueblo and Landry, Texas A&M.Hear more from Lance and how the office of Athletic Coordinator are working hard to support the coaches and students in Hays CISD.

Episode 12 Coach Terrence Franks (Varsity Running Backs Coach Lehman High School)
Coach Terrance "Flash" Franks is one fast dude - 4.29 40-yard dash fast. He holds several individual rushing records at Texas State. Most rushing yards in a game - 284 and the longest run from scrimmage - 96 yds. After Texas State, Coach Franks was drafted by the St. Louis Rams. Listen and hear what the experience of being drafted is like and his transition to coaching. He is in his first year of coaching as the running backs coach. With his experience, he is able to help athletes on and off the field. Transitioning from playing to coaching (not-playing) should help student athletes make the transition from high school sports.In addition to a "highlight" football career, Coach Franks like to cook cajun dishes and has his own clothing line, V1NTAGEDRIP.com - some customers include LeBron James. Episode 11 Dusty Gibbs (Assistant Athletic Director Hays CISD)
Meet Dusty Gibbs, the Assistant Athletic Director for Hays CISD. Dusty comes to the position from Fredericksburg where is was an Assistant Coach under Coach Lance Moffett at Fredericksburg High School. Prior to Fredericksburg, he was the Head Coach for the Harper Longhorns.Originally from Brady, Dusty has been involved in football and sports all his life. He admits to being a sports "enthusiast", even creating his own version of Madden and developing play as young as five years old.The role of the Assistant Athletic Director is to assist the Athletic Director and much more. While the job of the Athletic Directors office is to oversee athletic programs and coaches at Hays CISD, Dusty was involved in the presentation of the recent school bond and now the implementation. Admittedly, the transition from Coach to Assistant AD was challenging, especially being on the sidelines from many years. However, the opportunity to work with coaches, all sports, is exciting. Dusty and his wife Renee were high school sweethearts and have two children - Cannon and Reese. Get to know Dusty, he is a very funny guy who truly enjoys and cares about the coaches, students and athletic programs at Hays CISD.

Episode 10 Coach Isaac Ramon (Freshman and JV Linebacker Coach Lehman High School)
Coach Ramon is not the only coach in the family, is wife is the Head Golf Coach at Hays High School. It must run in the family which is about to expand. Coach Ramon and Alicia are expecting their first child in five weeks. Congratulations!Coach Ramon was a product of a military family, having lived in Italy and Germany from 1st grade until his Junior years. He actually graduated from Abilene Cooper in Abilene, TX. Coach Ramon played football during his high school years on base and helped his team win the European Championships (American football not soccer). He graduated from Angelo State University, in San Angelo, with a degree in Geology. After working for the state for approximately three years, his wife encouraged him to consider the teaching/ coaching profession. He is currently teaching an intro to Chemistry and Physics class. Excited to have Coach Ramon on the coaching staff. Congratulations again on your first child due in five weeks.

Episode 9 Coach Adam Froeschl (Head Coach Freshman Football, Wide Receivers Coach Varsity Football and Assistant Baseball Coach)
Meet Coach Adam Froeschl, Hays High School graduate and former Attorney. After college, Coach Froeschl attended law school and practiced law. During this time, He began volunteer as a coach. It was during this time he realized how much he enjoyed coaching. Coach Froeschl has been coaching for 6 years and has been on the Lehman staff for 2 years. Coach actually played baseball at St. Edwards in Austin. So, along with football, he is also the varsity assistant baseball coach. Another interesting fact is that plays multiple instruments, including the bassoon. Great to have a talented and local coach on staff. Enjoy the podcast!

Episode 8 Coffee with Coach Jason Williams (aka J Wills) (Defensive Backs and Special Teams Coach Lehman High School)
Great conversation with Coach Jason Williams (aka J Wills) and Head Coach Chris Castillo. Coach Williams coaches the corner backs (defensive backs), which he played at Texas State. Previously chemical engineering major eventually turned to his passion - sports and coaching. His dad played for LSU as a defensive back. Coach Williams decided to follow his passion and enter the world of coaching. In his first year as a coach, Coach Williams is a student of the game and brings fresh vision and ideas to special teams play. In addition to football, coach will be serving as an assistant on the baseball team. When not coaching, J Will teaches chemistry.Coach Williams smile and positive energy is just what young people need from a coach. Not everything is going to go your way but you can control how you respond and feel. Apparently, Coach Williams is quite the ping pong player and sounds like he is always up for a game. As a competitor, he never backs down from a challenge.Coach Castillo shared his thought about the upcoming game against Smithson Valley. we also discussed district realignment some facility improvements at Lehman High School.Enjoy the podcast!

Episode 7 Coach Steve Hoffman (Head Coach Johnson High School)
Spent some time with Coach Hoffman today, Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator for Johnson High School. He has been the head coach for five years, as long as the school has been open. Coach Hoffman has a heart to see these athletes be successful in life. Hear how he started a program for Special Olympic athletes to receive letter jackets which he continued at Johnson. Coach Hoffman earned his 100th win as a head coach last Friday night against Anderson. We chronicled his coaching career and successes along the way to becoming the head coach of the Jags.We also talked about what inspired him to become a coach and his playing career both high school and college. Episode 5 Coffee with Coach Jonathan Batson (Defensive Backs Coach Lehman High School)
Coach Batson, former Texas A&M defensive back and avid tennis shoe collector, joins on Coffee with Coach. Originally from San Antonio, played on a state championship team in high school and eventually played safety for Texas A&M. This is where he became an avid tennis shoe collector. Coach Batson shares his passion for football and how it led him to coaching. Also, learn what it means to be a collector of over 110+ pairs of tennis shoes. Glad to have coach on staff coaching the safeties and defensive backs.

Episode 4 Coffee with Coach Fred Rodriguez "Coach Rod 1" (Offensive Line Coach Lehman High School)
This week, Coach Fred Rodriguez, Offensive Line coach, joined us in studio. Last week, Coach Isaac Rodriguez, Offensive Coordinator, joined us. We are going to refer to Coach Fred Rodriquez as Coach Rod 1. Coach Rod 1 actually grew up in Seguin and played football for the Seguin Matadors, the Lobos opponents this week. Hear how Coach Rod 1 began his coaching career as an intern at Lehman High School.He was also the 2022 Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) ROCK (Rare, Outstanding, Compelled and Knowledgeable) Mentoring Program. It is a program where some of the best young coaches around the state get mentored by an experienced coach such as an Athletic Coordinator/Director and they help these young coaches grow into one of these leadership positions. Now, after 3 years, Coach Rod 1 is the offensive line coach. Listen to coach talk about "DRACO", a word that embodies the football program this year.Enjoy!

This is Coach's first year on staff but not his first time on campus - Coach Rodriguez as a former student and athlete at Lehman. I have had the pleasure of working with Coach Rodriguez for several years while he was a Hays HS as a coach and FCA Huddle Sponsor. Coach talks about how it became a football coach and why he decided to come to Lehman. Many people do not know he was a great baseball player and served in the military. Episode 2 Coffee with Coach Bo Camacho (Defensive Coordinator Lehman High School)
Today we visited with Coach Bo Camacho, Defensive Coordinator Lehman High School. This is Coach Camacho's 29th year coaching and first season at Lehman High School. We discussed last weeks game against a solid Bastrop High School team and teams defensive mindset. Coach Camacho shared why he is a coach, what drives him to be the best possible coach but also the best role model to these young men. Learn how his faith continues to fuel his passion for the game and developing better men.

Episode 1 Coffee with Coach Chris Castillo (Lehman High School Head Football Coach)
Spent time with the New Kyle Lehman Head Football Coach, Chris Castillo. Coach Castillo shared some insights on why Lehman. He also shared thoughts on the upcoming home game between Lehman vs Bastrop. Coach Castillo emphasized the importance of culture, developing a winning culture and developing young men as well as athletes. He talked about "earning your stripes" by introducing a new helmet (see picture). Players earn their stripes (helmet) by hard work. The players will be introducing the new helmets this Friday (8/25) night.

Welcome to The FCA Guy Podcast where we talk sports + faith. Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a faith-based ministry to coaches and athletes. Our Mission: To lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and the local church.Each week, I will interview local coaches on a segment we call "Coffee with Coach". During this time we get to know the coach in a casual environment. From time to time, I will interview special guests that have a great testimony and impact in my life or the lives of others.This is a good space to hear from coaches and be encouraged.
