Can Avengers: Doomsday Revive the MCU? – E178
We’re breaking down one of the most (if not the most) hotly-anticipated releases this year, Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday. Mother Mary Goes All-in On Dreamlike Archetypes – E177
Madison is here with a review of one of the most intriguing releases of the year thus far, David Lowery’s newest film, Mother Mary.Distributed by A24, Mother Mary is the first of two Anne Hathaway vehicles in a month, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 releasing on May 1st. That said, the two films share little more than Miss Hathaway and fashion. Yet Lowery’s haunting film blurs the lines between memory and reality, performance and perception, in an eerie and artful manner. As Madison tried to convey, Mother Mary, “is not a love story,” and it’s “...not a ghost story,” rather it’s “a very mythic, archetypal kind of movie where it’s very dreamlike.” For many, those blurred lines and split storytelling styles will cause a bit of confusion. For others, like Madison, it was the dreamy, artistic, interpretive qualities that drew him in.We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and be sure to go see Mother Mary in a theater near you.—Get your tickets to see Mother Mary:- See it at AMC- See it at Cinemark- See it at Regal- Find tickets on Fandango—Check out Mother Mary’s IMDB page.—Fan of The Indie Magazine & Podcast? Sacred Texts – Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) – E169
We’re back with our Sacred Texts series, and we’re discussing Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987). One of John Hughes’ finest, not to mention John Candy and Steve Martin, this is a *truly 80’s* flick that deserves a revisit. While the comedy style, jokes, and set pieces might induce some millennial cringe, the deeper story about carrying your grief, dealing with adversity, and having grace for your fellow man makes this one of Tristan’s favorites of the season.Sacred Texts can be art in any medium that you internalize, reflect upon, and find worth or inspiration through beyond the original presentation. These movies or shows could impact you in a number of ways, and they could be Sacred because they are family touchstones, or because of their impact at a certain time in your life, or indicative of a change in your outlook, or for any number of reasons. We hope you enjoy our episode today, give the film a watch (linked in our show notes), and then keep an eye out for our last Sacred Texts of the year coming next month.Enjoy!—Watch the Sacred Text we discussed today: - Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987) — Watch on Kanopy, or rent on VOD.—Fan of The Indie Magazine & Podcast? Wicked: For Good…is it good?!? – E168
We already know what everyone’s seeing this weekend at the theaters, and no, it sadly isn’t Predator: Badlands or The Running Man reboot. No folks, this weekend and the many that follow will belong to Wicked: For Good, the oddly-titled second-half of the stage-to-screen adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Cole talks us through what he liked, what he liked less, what people will point out, and just *how much* we’ll see of *that one character* from the souce material’s original source material. Cole’s Air comparison might be spot on. Give today’s episode a listen before or after you see the movie, and get you butt to the theaters this weekend!Enjoy!—Visit TheIndieMagazine.com for all our reviews, interviews, lists, and coverage throughout the years. Thanks again for listening!—Are you starting a podcast of your own? Sacred Texts – Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) – E159
“One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring, but there were some who resisted…”We’re back with our Sacred Texts series, and this week we’re covering a cinematic masterpiece, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). From its take on political power, pastoral themes, heroism and courage, and manliness, there’s a lot to unpack in Madison’s Sacred Text.Sacred Texts can be art in any medium that you internalize, reflect upon, and find worth or inspiration through beyond the original presentation. These movies or shows could impact you in a number of ways, and they could be Sacred because they are family touchstones, or because of their impact at a certain time in your life, or indicative of a change in your outlook, or for any number of reasons. In times like this, we pray Galadriel’s prophecy could come to be, and that “...the time will soon come when hobbits will shape the fortunes of all.” May we each find our hobbit spirit, and may we each hold true to the sacred texts that have shaped us.We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and you’ll find links to the film below, as well as the songs referenced early on. We’ll be back with another Sacred Text entry next month, and another episode next week.Enjoy!—Watch the Sacred Text we discussed today: - Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) — Watch on HBO Max.—Listen to the Tracks we teased today:- “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin – On Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music- “Misty Mountain Hop” by Led Zeppelin – On Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music- “The Wizard” by Black Sabbath – On Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music- “Rivendell” by Rush – On Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music- “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” by Leonard Nimoy – On Spotify, YouTube (music video!), or Apple Music—How to Split up LOTR as a Miniseries: Quora GuideThe Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition: 228 minutes)- Part 1: The Shire and Rivendell (0:00 - 1:15:00) - Covers the introduction of the Shire, the fellowship's formation, and the journey to Rivendell.- Part 2: The Journey Begins (1:15:00 - 2:30:00) - From leaving Rivendell to encountering the Mines of Moria, including the battle with the Balrog.- Part 3: The Breaking of the Fellowship (2:30:00 - 3:48:00) - Covers the events in Lothlórien and the breaking of the fellowship at Amon Hen.—Fan of The Indie Magazine & Podcast? Sacred Texts – Spirited Away (2001) – E147
We’re back with our Sacred Texts series, and we’re discussing Spirited Away (2001). Lenny Barszap and Aaron Brown, Writer & Director of Home Free – E144
This week, we're sitting down with Lenny Barszap and Aaron Brown to discuss their indie feature, Home Free . This is a coming of age film about college, growing up, friendship, and homelessness, all portrayed in a genuine way with enough laughs and heart to captivate you the whole way through. Writer Lenny Barszap and director Aaron Brown both grew up in smaller towns in Texas, and they based this film on their experiences at UT Austin in the late 90's-early 00's. Though this isn't their first film or festival circuit though, Home Free represents the combination of their lived experiences and social change in a new and unique way. Through their organization, Been There, and through the collective efforts of film festivals, Austin, and fellow creatives, these two are continuing to push for change. We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and make sure you go back to Episode 123 to catch our review of the Home Free LP.Enjoy!—About the Film: Home Free is based on the real-life experience of Onion Creek Productions founder and director/producer Aaron Brown and writer/producer Lenny Barszap of Entertaining Entertainment. In 1997, as sophomores at the University of Texas at Austin, Brown and Barszap invited an unhoused philosophy professor to crash on their porch – where they hosted several parties, many of which their friend and fellow UT Austin student at the time, Adrian Quesada, also attended. Twenty-five years later, this became the premise for the film Home Free, which explores profound themes of friendship, personal growth, and social impact through the lens of comedy (think Dazed & Confused meets Superbad).Home Free aims to put a spotlight on the homelessness crisis and organizations like The Other Ones Foundation (TOOF), Caritas and other housing nonprofits in Austin that are actively working to rewrite the narrative around our unhoused neighbors and transition them off of the streets – with hopes of inspiring this kind of format across the country. —About Been There:Been There is a Trojan-horse-style movement led by a community of creative do-gooders transforming films, music, festivals and art into catalysts for positive societal change.- Instagram: @beenthereusa- Website: https://www.beenthere.org/- Reach out to Been There's team here.—Listen to the Home Free (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack): - Listen on Spotify- Listen on Apple Music- Listen on Amazon Music- Purchase the album on Bandcamp- Purchase the album as mp3 or vinyl on Amazon—Fan of The Indie Magazine & Podcast? Sacred Texts — The Fountain (2006) — E140
Our Sacred Texts series continues this month with one of Tristan's most beloved of all movies, The Fountain (2006). Darren Aronofsky's quizzically complex story about a surgeon who's losing his wife and fighting to find a cure, which includes a story of conquistadors and a space bubble fit for an art gallery, is one to watch for anyone willing to grapple with the film.Sacred Texts can be art in any medium that you internalize, reflect upon, and find worth or inspiration through beyond the original presentation. These movies or shows could impact you in a number of ways, and they could be Sacred because they are family touchstones, or because of their impact at a certain time in your life, or indicative of a change in your outlook, or for any number of reasons. We hope you enjoy today's episode, and you can find ways to watch The Fountain in our show notes. We'll be back with another Sacred Text next month, and next week we've got an exciting episode to coincide with Apple's new F1: The Movie. Enjoy!—Watch the Sacred Text we discussed today: - The Fountain (2006) — Watch free on Kanopy or rent on VOD.—About The Fountain:- As a modern-day scientist, Tommy is struggling with mortality, desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi.–Fan of The Indie Magazine & Podcast? Will Padilla, Host of 1980’s Now – E139
No decade has caught hold of our need and love for nostalgia like the 1980’s. Lucky for you, Will Padilla and his crew at 1980s Now are hosting a show that’s as entertaining as it is informative to learn about, revisit, and dig into all there is to love about the 80s.Whether we’re talking about reality and history, or the rose-colored glasses with which we memorialize the decade, the clothing, movies, and music of the era, it’s a decade which continues to captivate us. Today we discuss four movies that are less known than your Stallone, John Hughes, or Spielberg flicks, but are some of Will’s favorites. We hope you share today's episode with fans of all things 80s. We’ve linked their show below, as well as the movies Will and Tristan discussed, so give those a watch if you're looking to catch a hidden gem this weekend.Enjoy today's episode, and long live the 80s!—Give 1980’s Now a listen on your favorite podcast platform:– Listen on Spotify– Listen on Apple Podcasts– Visit the Showpage– Meet the Hosts— About 1980s Now:1980s Now is a weekly examination of the importance of 80s pop culture and its continued influence today. We demonstrate that nostalgia alone doesn’t account for the contemporary fascination with our favorite decade. Instead, we share personal experiences and interview experts--including icons from 80s music, movies and TV--to demonstrate the “era of greed” bore the greatest moments in movies, music, television and sports. The show is equally entertaining and informative. (80s is aka '80s.)About Will Padilla:On an unseasonably warm day in 1971, somewhere in Jersey City, NJ, Will was born with a fake mustache and a convincing Australian accent. This may have been the start of his life-long interest in performing. • His fascination with music began with five unforgettable notes from Close Encounters, which he plunked out on his Schroeder-sized piano. Years later, he created music and soundscapes for Off-Broadway productions and performances at The Juilliard School. In 2020, Will completed the immersive sound design for an audio production of Macbeth (starring Tamara Tunie of Law and Order and Derek Wilson of Future Man and Preacher).• Stunned in the 1980s that a single actor could portray Superman and star in Death Trap, Will later studied acting at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (as a company member alongside Peter Dinklage, future star of Game of Thrones), at Bill Esper Studios and with Olympia Dukakis. • Having watched hours of Monty Python on UHF as a child, Will later adapted John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost into a dark comedy, which was produced at HERE (New York). Will also wrote and performed with Those Lazy Bastards (New York) a sketch comedy group that he founded with Yuri Lowenthal (voice of Ben-10, PS4’s Spiderman). • And while he couldn’t dance a single step to a slow jam, Will learned to break on a piece of cardboard on the streets of his hometown. • With a passion for 1980s pop culture, and amazing enunciation, Will is the perfect host of the weekly podcast that defends the best decade for media.—80’s Movies You Might Have Missed: - Death Trap (1982) — on Tubi- My Bodyguard (1980) — Rent on VOD- The Hidden (1987) — Rent on VOD- Real Men (1987) — on Tubi1980s Game – Mixtape—Are you starting a podcast of your own? Andor Season 2 – Rebellious TV is Built on Hope – E132
Rebellions are built on hope, and good television is built on masterful screenwriting. Andor Season 2 reminds us what makes the Star Wars universe so special: cultural relevance played out among the planets and people not so different from ourselves.Tony Gilroy and his creative team brought the world a masterclass in storytelling in what could be deemed an unlikely vehicle. Like so many others, we wondered when Andor was announced who would be interested in the Rogue One supporting character’s backstory.Guess we didn’t know what they had up their sleeves. This rebel snuck his way into our hearts and minds in Season 1, and the story they brought to the screen in Season 2 surpassed anything we’ve seen from a Star Wars show or movie thus far.Today we look at what we loved about Andor Season 2, what the criticisms and conversation gets right and wrong, and what we hope for Star Wars movies and shows in the near future.Give our episode a listen, then go finish Andor Season 2 and rewatch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Disney+ today. We hope you enjoy the episode, and let us know what you’ve thought about Andor Season 2 in our comments!—Watch Andor Season 2 on Disney+, and watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on Disney+ or Hulu as well once you’re finished.—A little about Andor Season 2:Lucasfilm’s Emmy®-nominated thriller “Andor,” returned on April 23, 2025. The second season takes place as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound. Rife with political intrigue and danger, the series is a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which portrayed a heroic band of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction—The Death Star—setting the stage for the events of the original 1977 film. “Andor” sets the clock back five years from the events of “Rogue One” to tell the story of the film’s hero, Cassian Andor, and his transformation from disinterested, cynical nobody into a rebel hero on his way to an epic destiny. —Are you starting a podcast of your own?
