    Thermography

In this episode, we explored thermography, a non-invasive imaging technique that uses infrared technology to detect subtle heat patterns in the body. Unlike traditional imaging methods, thermography doesn’t involve radiation or physical contact. Instead, it maps temperature variations that can reflect inflammation, changes in circulation, or other physiological shifts. This makes it a useful tool for gaining early insight into how the body is functioning. We also discussed how thermography is increasingly being used to support wellness monitoring—from identifying patterns related to muscular strain, dental health, and nerve irritation to providing additional context in breast health assessments. Whether you’re curious about preventive health or simply want to understand emerging imaging technologies, this episode breaks down what thermography can truly offer. Minerals the Micronutrient Secret Agents

In this episode, Kelly, Kym, and Lyndsay break down why minerals are basically the body’s spark plugs — powering hormones, thyroid conversion, detox pathways, neurotransmitters, and the cellular energy that keeps you upright instead of face-down on the couch. They explore how stress, toxins, poor soil quality, caffeine, endurance training, and modern life are constantly draining key minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, and selenium… leaving many people unknowingly running on low battery. The hosts highlight how mineral imbalances can show up as fatigue, mood swings, stubborn thyroid issues, poor stress tolerance, sugar cravings, and blood-sugar dysregulation — symptoms often blamed on “laziness” or willpower instead of a true biochemical roadblock. The trio also dives into the power of HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) as a functional tool for spotting long-term mineral patterns, heavy metal exposure, adrenal stress, and thyroid-blocking imbalances like copper excess or low selenium. They discuss how minerals work together in a delicate matrix — zinc and copper balance, calcium/magnesium ratios, sodium/potassium stress signatures — and why personalized correction is far more effective than guessing. From women preparing for pregnancy to athletes, burnt-out professionals, and anyone battling chronic gut or metabolic issues, this episode unpacks how optimizing minerals can transform energy, hormone health, resilience, and performance at the deepest level. The Pros and Cons of HRT — What Women Need to Know

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is one of the most debated topics in women’s health. In this episode, we delve into the truth behind the pros, cons, and controversies surrounding HRT, enabling women to make informed choices with confidence. HRT can bring powerful relief from hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, low libido, and mood swings, while also supporting bone, heart, and metabolic health when used appropriately. For many, it’s not just about symptom relief — it’s about thriving in midlife rather than simply surviving. We’ll also explore why opinions are so divided — from the shadow of the 2002 WHI study to philosophical beliefs about whether menopause should be “treated” at all. Through a functional medicine lens, we’ll discuss the importance of tailoring HRT to the individual — considering genetics, lifestyle, age, and using the right type and route of hormones — while never forgetting the bigger picture of nutrition, sleep, and stress management. Key takeaway: HRT isn’t a magic bullet, nor is it the enemy. It’s a tool. When used wisely and with personalization, it can be transformative. Women deserve clarity, not confusion, when it comes to navigating this pivotal stage of life. Have questions or topics you’d like us to cover? Mindset Matters — The Secret Ingredient to Lasting Change (Feat. Maria Bierson)

Episode Overview In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we dive deep into mindset as the foundational driver of transformation. Whether it’s weight loss, rehab, fertility, or long-term health, this conversation explores how beliefs, habits, and resilience shape outcomes more than any protocol alone. Key Insights Mindset sets the ceiling: Many clients start strong, but mindset determines whether change lasts. Limiting beliefs are common: Maria shares how she helps clients identify and reframe stories that hold them back. Setbacks are part of growth: Instead of failures, setbacks become feedback. Adapting mindset helps maintain momentum. Process over outcome: Focusing on daily actions (like movement, protein goals, rest) empowers sustainable habits. Support is essential: Community, coaches, accountability, and empathy amplify mindset shifts. Mindset in different health journeys: Kym describes how she helps fertility patients stay in long-term perspective; Lindsay speaks on sustaining resilience through cancer recovery and lymphedema flare-ups. From the Fitness LensKelly emphasizes that in fitness and rehab, mindset is often the difference between consistency and burnout. Goals must be realistic, patience, intentional, and progress celebrated — even if it’s slow or non-linear. Practical Takeaways Set process goals (e.g. “strength train twice this week”) rather than outcome goals. Track non-scale wins (energy, mood, mobility) to reinforce progress. Build recovery and rest intentionally — they’re not side quests, they’re core to sustainability. Reframe setback thinking: shift “Why me?” to “What is this teaching me?” Lean into support — even a small community or accountability connection can make mindset stick. The Importance of Protein (Feat. Maria Bierson)

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, host Kelly Demers is joined by co-hosts Dr. Kym Klimeck (Functional Medicine) and Dr. Lindsay Seefeldt (Oncology & Rehab Physical Therapy) along with guest Maria Bierson, a weight-loss coach and Integrative Wellness Coalition member. Together, they unpack why protein is one of the most overlooked — yet most essential — foundations for energy, metabolism, and healthy aging.💡 Key Takeaways Protein = longevity fuel. Adequate protein preserves muscle mass, bone density, and independence as we age. Most people under-eat protein. Even health-minded adults often miss the 25–35g per meal target needed for muscle repair and satiety. Pair protein with strength training. The combination protects against sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) and supports metabolism. Distribution matters. Spacing protein evenly across meals is more effective than “loading” at dinner. Protein supports metabolic health. It balances blood sugar, curbs cravings, and provides steady energy throughout the day. Recovery counts. Post-workout protein accelerates repair, reduces soreness, and boosts performance. 🏋️‍♀️ From the Fitness Lens Kelly highlights that protein isn’t just a nutrient — it’s a recovery strategy. Combined with resistance training, it helps build the strength and vitality needed for lifelong freedom of movement.🧬 From the Functional Medicine Lens Dr. Kym emphasizes protein’s role in cellular repair, immune function, and hormone balance, explaining why needs often increase with stress, aging, or illness.💪 From the Rehab & Oncology Lens Dr. Lindsay shares how adequate protein intake supports recovery after cancer treatments and helps patients regain energy, function, and confidence.🥗 From the Behavior & Nutrition LensMaria discusses how focusing on protein first helps clients feel satisfied, stay consistent, and stop the all-or-nothing diet cycle.⚡ Quick Wins for Listeners Aim for 25–35g of protein per meal (roughly palm-sized portions). Include protein at breakfast — it sets the tone for blood sugar and cravings all day. Combine with resistance training two to three times per week. Focus on progress, not perfection — even small increases add up over time. 🔗 Learn MoreFor more integrative conversations bridging fitness, healthcare, and mindset, subscribe to The Integrative Edge and follow The Integrative Wellness Coalition on social media. Liver Health: A Foundation for Overall Wellness

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we’re highlighting one of the most underrated but essential organs for whole-body wellness: the liver. Often only associated with detox, the liver is actually your body’s master multitasker—responsible for over 500 critical functions. It processes hormones, toxins, medications, nutrients, and blood sugar, while also playing a major role in bile production, cholesterol regulation, immune defense, and even thyroid hormone activation. When your liver becomes sluggish, it can show up as fatigue, hormone imbalances, poor digestion, mood swings, and skin issues—often before traditional labs show anything out of range. We talk about how to recognize the signs that your liver might be struggling, from PMS and estrogen dominance to pale stools, itchy skin, or sensitivity to alcohol and smells. We also explain the difference between standard liver labs and more functional approaches, like stool testing for bile acid function, organic acids testing to assess detox pathways, and advanced toxin screenings for things like mold and heavy metals. A healthy liver is key to balanced hormones, a thriving gut, optimal thyroid function, and a calm, regulated immune system—especially if you’re navigating autoimmunity or chronic fatigue. You’ll hear us walk through how to truly support the liver in a safe and sustainable way. That means focusing on both Phase I and Phase II detox pathways, encouraging bile flow, optimizing glutathione production, and avoiding the common mistake of “pushing detox” without first opening up the body’s drainage and elimination systems. We also share some of our favorite nutrients and herbs for liver support—like milk thistle, artichoke, dandelion, and NAC—as well as daily practices like hydration, sweating, castor oil packs, and lymphatic drainage that support liver and lymph flow. The liver doesn’t often complain loudly, but when supported intentionally, it can be the missing link to clearer energy, smoother hormones, better digestion, and improved resilience. You need long-term, functional strategies that work with your body’s natural rhythm. This episode will show you how to start loving your liver the way it deserves. Understanding Autoimmune: When Your Body Fights Itself

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we’re breaking down the complex and often misunderstood world of autoimmunity—what it is, why it happens, and how functional medicine approaches it differently. Autoimmune conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to chronic inflammation, organ dysfunction, and a wide variety of symptoms. With over 100 known autoimmune diseases—including Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and psoriasis—it’s more common than many realize, especially among women. We explore the underlying contributors to autoimmunity, including chronic gut dysfunction, infections, toxin exposure, and stress. While genetics play a role, we talk about the concept of “genes loading the gun and the environment pulling the trigger,” meaning environmental and lifestyle factors often activate these conditions. Triggers like leaky gut, mold and mycotoxins, food sensitivities, chronic infections (like EBV or Lyme), trauma, and stress can all contribute to the perfect storm. We also walk through the early signs and symptoms that often go overlooked: fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, skin rashes, digestive issues, hair loss, mood swings, and more. Too often, these symptoms are brushed off or misdiagnosed—especially in women—and many people go years without answers. That’s why testing matters. We discuss functional testing options such as autoimmune antibody panels, gut testing for pathogens and permeability, mycotoxin and heavy metal screenings, food sensitivity testing, and inflammatory markers that can provide clearer insight into what's really happening beneath the surface. Most importantly, we want you to know: you are not broken. Autoimmunity doesn’t mean your body is attacking you for no reason—it means it’s responding to something it perceives as a threat. With the right support, root-cause testing, and lifestyle interventions, it's absolutely possible to see symptoms improve or even go into remission. You have more power than you think, and we’re here to guide you back to balance. Have questions or topics you’d like us to cover?  Email us at [email protected] — we’d love to hear from you! Do Supplements Actually Work? What to Take, What to Skip? And Where to Purchase?

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we’re diving into a question we hear all the time from our clients and community: Do supplements actually work? The truth is—yes, they can be incredibly effective when used correctly. In the world of root-cause healing and functional medicine, supplements can play a powerful role in supporting the body. But not all supplements are created equal. Their effectiveness depends on quality, proper dosing, bioavailability, timing, and individual needs. They’re not magic pills—and they should always support, not replace, a solid foundation of lifestyle, nutrition, and personalized care. We break down the difference between foundational supplements that are often worth considering—like high-quality multivitamins, magnesium, omega-3s, vitamin D3/K2, and targeted gut or hormone support—and the ones we suggest skipping. Think: cheap drugstore brands with synthetic fillers, influencer-hyped products with undisclosed ingredients, and anything promising to be a quick fix or “cure-all.”  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We also uncover the hidden risks of buying supplements on Amazon, including issues with counterfeit products, tampered seals, expired ingredients, and lack of temperature control during storage. Even if a bottle looks legitimate, many practitioner-grade brands do not authorize sales on Amazon—which means you may not be getting what you think you are. If a supplement has ever “not worked” for you, this could be one of the key reasons why. Finally, we share where we recommend buying supplements safely and with confidence. Whether it’s through authorized healthcare practitioner platforms like Fullscript (which we both use and offer discounts through), directly from the brand, or trusted distributors, quality truly matters. We also explain how to look for third-party testing and certifications like cGMP, NSF, or USP to ensure you’re getting clean, effective products. At the end of the day, your health deserves more than guesswork or trendy marketing. With the right guidance, supplements can be a supportive, intentional part of your healing and performance journey. Have questions or topics you’d like us to cover? Mold Illness & Mycotoxins: What Everyone Needs to Know

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we're shedding light on one of the most overlooked root causes of chronic symptoms—mold illness and mycotoxin exposure. Mold illness is more than just an environmental nuisance; it's a complex inflammatory response that occurs when your body is repeatedly exposed to mold spores and their toxic byproducts, often from water-damaged buildings. Mycotoxins, the harmful compounds released by certain molds, can silently disrupt immune function, hormone balance, brain health, gut integrity, and more, leaving many people misdiagnosed or feeling like they're "just anxious" or "just tired."We explore how mold exposure differs from internal fungal or yeast overgrowth like Candida, and why the two are so often connected. Mycotoxins can suppress the immune system and impair detox pathways, creating the perfect storm for opportunistic infections like Candida to thrive—adding another layer to symptoms and healing complexity. If you’ve been dealing with chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, digestive issues, hormone imbalance, or heightened sensitivity to chemicals and smells, mold and mycotoxins may be an important missing piece. You’ll also learn how to properly test for mold illness—because it’s not always visible on standard labs. We break down options like urine mycotoxin testing (through MosaicDX or Vibrant Wellness), blood antibody testing (from MyMycoLab), organic acids testing, fungal antibody panels, and when to consider environmental tests like ERMI, HERTSMI, or The Dust Test to assess your home.  From a functional medicine lens, healing starts with reducing exposure, supporting detoxification through the liver, lymph, and gut, and using specific binders matched to your mycotoxin profile. We also touch on rebuilding gut integrity, supporting mitochondria, and restoring immune balance for long-term recovery—not just symptom management. We’ll reference leading voices in the mold and mycotoxin space, including Dr. Jill Crista, Dr. Jill Carnahan, and Dr. Andrew Campbell, whose clinical insights and research have helped shape safe and effective detox strategies. If you've ever felt dismissed by providers or overwhelmed by unexplained symptoms, this episode will help you connect the dots and feel empowered to explore root-cause solutions. Mold illness is underdiagnosed—especially in women—and healing is absolutely possible with the right tools, testing, and practitioner support. Have questions or topics you’d like us to cover? The Revolving Door of Fad Diets & Food Sensitivity Testing: How Even These “Functional” Tools May Miss the Mark

In this episode of The Integrative Edge, we dive into why fad diets and food sensitivity testing—especially IgG panels—often miss the mark in functional healing. While these tools can feel empowering, they frequently create fear-based nutrition habits and confusion, leading people further away from real answers. We unpack the difference between food sensitivities and true IgE allergies, explain why gut healing is about restoring function (not just eliminating foods), and explore how over-restriction can deplete vital nutrients like magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins. Rather than relying on endless testing or rigid food rules, we focus on upstream healing—supporting the nervous system, liver, hormones, and gut microbiome—to build true resilience within the body. Because healing isn’t just about avoiding triggers; it’s about increasing your body’s capacity to adapt, recover, and thrive. Yes, short-term dietary protocols have their place, but true functional nutrition is about freedom, flexibility, and nourishing your body with diverse, quality-sourced whole foods.Disclaimer: The recommendations discussed in these episodes are for informational purposes only and are not intended as medical advice. Get ready to transform your sleep habits and harness the restorative power of quality rest! Impact of too little sleep on your nutrition: Too little sleep disrupts hunger hormones, increases cravings for unhealthy foods, slows metabolism, and impairs decision-making, leading to overeating and poor food choices. It also impacts digestion, reduces energy for physical activity, and heightens stress, which can trigger emotional eating. Prioritizing good sleep supports better nutrition and overall health.
