AUTHOR HILDEE WEISS: It's Never TOO LATE to Change Your Life
Send us Fan MailMoms are notorious for putting themselves last. Hildee Weiss was the epitome of this. At 46, she was adevoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who moved through life feeling worn down, invisible, and convinced that transformation belonged to other people—thinner people, younger people, braver people. Then one ordinary day, she asked herself a question that would rewrite everything she believed about who she could become: What if I tried? What you are about to listen to today is the definition of inspiring—of someone who feels like it is too late or that change belongs to other people—taking the step and realizing, that yes, they can – you can—change your life. Hildee is the author of the book Embracing My Inner Athlete, published by Library Tales Publishing, out next month, where she shares her inspiring journey from a sedentary lifestyle to becoming an avid runner, completing numerous 5Ks, half marathons, Spartans, and trail races. Hildee and I discuss:🌀the importance of prioritizing health and wellness for moms,🌀emphasizing the need to pursue passions that bring purpose and fulfillment,🌀her experiences with injuries,🌀and the powerful mindset shift from feeling obligated to run to truly embracing the joy of movement. More than a running story, Hildee’s experience is a testament to second chances and the quiet, radical act of choosing yourself. For every woman who has ever felt stuck, sidelined, or “too late” to begin, her journey offers one powerful truth: You’re stronger than you think — and your next chapter can start with a single step. BONUS!: My friend AMANDA MARTIN just ran a 2:34 MARATHON!
Send us Fan MailToday's BONUS EPISODE features not an amazing mother runner but an amazing HUMAN, my dear friend: Amanda Martin. Amanda just crushed the Eugene Marathon with an astounding time of 2:34:20, marking an 8-minute personal record. This impressive feat makes her the third fastest woman in the history of the Eugene Marathon and the seventh fastest American woman on an unaided course in 2026.Despite not being a mom, Amanda's story is one that needs to be heard and I know it will inspire you. Her success didn’t come easily; it was the result of an 8-year journey filled with significant life changes, moves, family losses, injuries, self-doubt, and marathon challenges. Even just a week before the race, Amanda and I were discussing her goal of achieving the Olympic Trials marathon qualifying time, and possibly pivoting to the half-marathon qualifying time as the final 10k of the marathon had always eluded her. But not anymore. In this episode, we dive deep into Amanda’s inspiring story: 🌀exploring her incredible negative split during the race, where she closed strong with 5:30 mile splits and still had more to give;🌀we discuss the mental shifts, training adjustments, and nutritional choices that fueled her success;🌀and what fuels her unwavering determination to pursue her Olympic Trials dreams, despite facing heartbreak and setbacks.I am so excited to share Amanda's remarkable story. ALLY BRETTNACHER: Running's Role: From Punishment to Pride
Send us Fan MailRemember how running was a form of punishment as a kid? Talking during gym class? Run. Not listening when the soccer coach is talking? Run. That is honestly how I got into running. Because I would end up running all of soccer practice, I figured I might as well do the sport my dad wanted me to do anyway. Running was once a form of punishment for Ally Brettnacher, too. And then that evolved into punishing her body for unhealthy choices or the way she felt about it as a young adult But as life went on, her relationship with running changed. And instead of being a source of punishment, it evolved into a source of pride and celebration--and an example she can set for her kids. In this episode, Ally is open and honest about her journey. We talk about 🌀 how she ensures her relationship with running sets a positive example for her girls 🌀 how she keeps running fun while also seeking to challenge herself and get better🌀 her passion for supporting Ainsley's Angels and the running community, and so much more. You may recognize Ally's name: she is not just a dedicated runner and mom of two; she’s also the driving force behind Athlete Bouquets, a unique gift concept filled with goodies for runners, and the host of the Finish Lines and Milestones Podcast which is also in the Sandy Boy Productions family—just like this podcast. ANDI RIPLEY: Meeting Disappointment with Gratitude, Not Anger
Send us Fan MailAndi Ripley should be angry. But she is filled with gratitude. Andi has a lot of running talent and was just getting started when she suffered serious injuries that have since stunted her competitive running career. But Andi was able to see the beauty in this disappointment and re-focus her priorities. Starting her running journey at the young age of 8, Andi embarked on a competitive running career that carried her through college. After welcoming her first son, she embraced stroller running and unstructured training, making an impressive marathon debut with a time of 2:55—only to later discover she was pregnant. After the birth of her second son, she became coached by her husband, Zach, also an incredibly fast runner, and achieved a remarkable 2:43 Olympic Trials qualifying marathon time—with bilateral hip labrum tears. Andi ran the Olympic Trials and then underwent surgeries for both hips but has battled injury ever since. You might think she’d feel frustration over her untapped potential, but Andi chooses to view her challenges differently. In this episode, Andi shares how she: 🌀Embraces the beauty of her need to pivot, shifting her focus from personal records to helping others find joy in movement through her coaching and support.🌀How she navigated this transition, honing in on what she loves about running, and replicating it in other faces of life. 🌀Achieving “unhurried” healing.Alongside her husband Zach, both Olympic Trials marathon qualifiers, Andi co-hosts The A to Z Running podcast, which I highly recommend. How to Stay Motivated to RUN (& when to press PAUSE)
Send us Fan MailWhew, what an episode. This week we take on a listener question about how we stay motivated to run. This is not your typical discussion about all the ways to force ourselves out the door. We discuss self-reflection and how to get to the root cause of feeling less enthused about running. And we give tips that have helped us if we decided we wanted to keep going or how we have decided to press pause. In fact, Shanna has shared she has decided to press pause on her marathon goals and drop out of Chicago. The episode ends rather abruptly when something happens in the room Whitney is recording in. Per usual, this episode begins with our usual banter laced with inappropriateness. We are who we are. We hope we keep you company on the run or in the car line or doing laundry, etc. BIG thanks to our sponsor:CURE HYDRATION , delicious hydration for runners & kids! Reasons to NOT Run the Race You Paid & Trained For

The conversation also touches on how we can take running too seriously & course corrections for that. This pod is the closest thing to going on one of their early morning runs! Creating Safe Sports Environments for Kids with Dr. Leah Avery
Send us Fan MailToday, we have guest Dr. Leah Avery; a mother runner, physical therapist, & former competitive swimmer who was abused by her high school coach. Leah bravely shares her story & offers advice for us parents on how to create a safe environment for our kids involved in sports. We also discuss what parents can do to ensure our children don’t place too much of their identity in their sport. Leah also talks about the powerful role running played in her recovery. At the start, we have our usual banter—today about our summers so far including the good, bad, & ugly. We hope this important episode helps keep your kids safe as they progress in their sports. More about Leah:Leah has been a practicing PT for over a decade which is also when she began her running career. Prior to that she was a competitive swimmer starting at the age of 8 and retired her senior year of college. During her career she was a D1 All-American and competed at the Olympic Trials. Leah’s athletic career was anything but linear and she faced many hardships which originally led her to a career in physical therapy. However, after starting her running journey, it was clear she had an unhealthy relationship with athletics largely because of past as a young athlete. Her mission is to help runners reach their potential in a healthy manner by treating the person, not just the runner. And help them understand that running adds value to our lives but it is not what makes us valuable.Instagram:@[email protected]:01 Summer Reflections and Mom Guilt14:26 Leah's Experience in Competitive Swimming and Its Impact18:26 Identifying Signs of Control and Abuse21:13 The Journey to Acknowledgment and Healing23:07 The Role of Social Media in Sharing Stories26:32 Finding Strength Through Running30:53 Setting Boundaries with Coaches34:12 The Importance of Open Communication38:50 Balancing Athletic Drive and Self-Worth50:26 Finding Fulfillment in Running58:45 Lighthearted Moments and HumorWhitney Heins is a mom of 2, a lifelong runner, a VDOT-certified running coach for moms who run, and founder of the resource, themotherrunners.com.
