Aspiration vs. Ambition with philosopher Agnes Callard. The Agency of Becoming.
Welcome back. I hope everybody had a great New Year celebration, and if not, that’s ok, don’t feel that you missed out on something, at the end, it’s just a day. January, resolutions, new year new me, race for perfection, which doesn’t exist, as the reference point is always moving. So overwhelming. With all these resolutions, most of them being unsustainable, unless you find that thing that brings more value than the energy you spend. One approach to create a real transformative change is to do an inventory. The action that you included into your New Year's resolution, is one column, the next one is benefits, the third is how it’ll make you feel in a long run when you actually do that thing, and the fourth is your effort, energy you spend. Grade them based on the highest return value and focus on those. Be creative in your flexibility. For instance, if you don’t like jogging but you said on January 1st, I’ll be jogging every day, which on a deeper level means you committed to exercising, try other workouts and activities, there are many ways you can go to achieve the same underlying goal. We all feel very ambitious at the beginning of the year, we’re inspired, almost unstoppable at least in our mind, which is what counts, right? So today we’ll go deeper into the topic of aspiration and are joined by Agnes Callard, an American philosopher and an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago. Agnes is a winner of 2020 Lebowitz Prize, awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of philosophy, and an author of a book, Aspiration: The Agency of Becoming. People change. They come to value new things and in doing so they become new people. I know many will state the opposite, but I happen to know that people do change, and I’m grateful to see it every day. It’s a process, it’s messy, but it’s always worth it.
