    Missionaries vs. Monsters

Missionaries vs. Monsters | The Parsonage FilesThe best monster stories aren't on Reddit. They're buried in old missionary reports — tucked between crop notes and prayer requests. Nobody looks there. Which is exactly why the stories are so good.Tonight, Pastor Rick and his brother Rob dig into three real accounts from church missionaries who ran into something they couldn't explain. A congregational missionary in 1840s Oregon documents giant, rock-throwing creatures the Spokane people called the Men Stealers — more than a century before Bigfoot had a beef jerky deal. A Norwegian Lutheran pastor off the coast of Greenland in 1734 watches something rise out of the sea to the height of his ship's mast. And a Catholic missionary doctor in 1949 Tibet encounters a hairy wilderness healer connected to the Yeti tradition. But that last story takes a turn nobody expected.Three missionaries. Three remote places. Three moments when ordinary ministry collided with something strange.TIMESTAMPS0:00 – Introduction1:25 – Welcome to The Parsonage Files2:30 – Story 1: The Men Stealers — Pacific Northwest, 1840s5:03 – Elkana Walker's mission among the Spokane people6:56 – Giant tracks, bad smells, and three whistles9:42 – Story 2: The Sea Monster — Greenland, 173410:11 – Hans Egede and the lost Norse settlements11:48 – Something rises from the Davis Strait13:28 – What was it? From a kayaking church outing on Ohio Brush Creek that turned creepy fast, to a 1977 chainsaw-wielding reverend who chose fight over flight, to a terrifying night at Camp Timberlake that ended a church camp session early — these stories are wild, funny, and a little unsettling. No one gets hurt. Did a Pope Really Have a Baby? The Legend of Pope Joan

Pope Joan, a female pope, and a baby born in the streets of Rome. Did a pope really have a baby, or is this Catholic Church legend pure fiction? If it is fiction, why did church writers insist it was true?In this episode of The Parsonage Files, Pastor Rick and his brother Rob tell the Pope Joan story and then stress-test it. The legend says Joan disguises herself as “John Anglicus,” rises through the church in Rome, and gets elected pope after Pope Leo IV dies. Then the story hits its famous moment. A procession. Labor pains. And the pope giving birth in front of a crowd. Then we ask the questions that make historians squint. Could a pope hide a pregnancy while surrounded by attendants. Did popes even ride horseback in public. Why do the first written accounts show up about 400 years later. And what about the “proofs” people point to, like a procession route that avoids a street or the chair with a hole in it.You will also hear where the legend collides with real history and Benedict III.Timestamps0:01 A papal procession and a shocking birth3:11 Welcome to The Parsonage Files4:19 Joan’s origin and why she disguises herself7:55 “John Anglicus” arrives in Rome9:50 The legend’s fast track to cardinal11:57 Pope Leo IV dies and a new pope is chosen13:08 The reign length claim and the hidden pregnancy14:23 Could anyone miss it for nine months15:49 Did popes ride horses in public16:35 The 400-year gap and the first written accounts18:18 What the legend says happened next20:04 The chair story and other “proofs”20:51 Matching the legend to real papal history23:21 Closing and invitation

Did a Time Slip Happen in Kersey, England? The 1957 Royal Navy Cadets

Three Royal Navy cadets walk into Kersey, Suffolk on a bright Sunday morning in October 1957. It is a simple map-reading drill. They have a checkpoint and a deadline. Then the church bells stop, the village goes silent, and the world feels wrong. In this episode of The Parsonage Files, you hear the full Kersey Time Slip story as William Laing, Michael Crowley, and Ray Baker move through a version of the village that does not match 1957. Modern details seem to vanish. The St. Mary’s church tower is suddenly missing. A sweet shop window looks like a butcher shop, with pig carcasses hanging on iron hooks. Two of the boys feel sick and watched. They leave fast. From a hill, they look back, and Kersey is normal again. Two men remember the strange details for years. One remembers nothing unusual at all.Was it stress and fatigue playing tricks on their minds, or did they witness a brief “time slip” that snapped back in minutes? If you like time slip cases, British mysteries, and eyewitness stories that leave you arguing with your own brain, this one will stick with you. Keywords: Kersey Time Slip, Kersey Suffolk, 1957 mystery, Royal Navy cadets, St Mary’s church tower, retrocognition, time slip story, England paranormal, eyewitness account, strange village story

The Secret of Holy Fire - Ep. 5

Step inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with us on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. The church is packed with believers from many nations. Under the great dome sits the Aedicule, a small stone shrine over the tomb of Jesus. A chant rises. Drummers sway on the shoulders of dancers. Then the room grows still. Israeli police escort the Orthodox Patriarch to the shrine, search him for anything that can burn, and unseal the waxed doors. He enters with two plain candles and prays for God to light them as a sign to the world. A faint glow appears. The doors open. He steps out holding bright flames. People say the fire feels cool. Some lamps seem to light on their own. Many carry bundles of thirty-three thin candles, and the flame spreads person to person until the whole church shines. Is it a miracle, a hoax, or something else? In this video, we walk through the claims and the questions with care. The Parsonage Files is hosted by brothers Rick Birk, a United Methodist pastor, and Rob Birk, coming to you from Groveport, Ohio. www.groveportumc.orgSources:Connect the Cultures. The Spectre of Newby Church - Ep. 4

In this episode of The Parsonage Files, Dale—the retired custodian with a flashlight and a sense of humor—asks Rob and Rick what they’d say if a single photograph could prove a ghost is real, then guides viewers through the strange history of spirit photography (from Mumler to modern skeptics), famous cases like the Brown Lady and the Chinnery car photo, and the grief-forged origins and Gothic beauty of the Church of Christ the Consoler, where Rev. Kenneth F. Lord’s 1963 “Newby Spectre” was captured. Along the way, Dale weighs believers’ theories against camera quirks and cold drafts, offers a simple test for mystery (check the steps, check the camera, check your fear, then listen), and hands the question back to Rob and Rick to close the story.References Brown Lady of Raynham Hall. The Talking Donkey

In this episode of The Parsonage Files, Dale shares one of the Bible’s strangest and funniest stories—the day a donkey outsmarted a prophet. Hired to curse Israel for a big payday, Balaam sets off on a reckless journey, blind to the danger ahead. But his donkey sees what he can’t: an angel with a sword blocking the road. What follows is a mix of comedy, confrontation, and a talking animal with more sense than her master. Beneath the humor lies a sharp lesson about pride, greed, and learning to hear God’s warnings—even when they come from the most unexpected places. You’ll find it all in Numbers 22:21–39.

    The Miracle Staircase

In this episode of The Parsonage Files, Rick and Rob hear one of the custodian’s favorite stories—the mystery of the Miraculous Staircase. Long ago, in Santa Fe’s Loretto Chapel, the nuns had a big problem: their choir loft was 22 feet in the air, and no one could build stairs to reach it. Then a quiet stranger showed up with only a donkey and a toolbox. When he finished, he left behind a spiral staircase that twists like magic. It has no center pole, no nails, and 33 steps. Some say it’s a miracle. Others think it was just the work of a brilliant carpenter. Either way, this strange story still leaves people amazed today.
