Today I talk with Mr. Cool Beans about his life story which does include creation of the second coffee flavored podcast (clearly I missed my opportunity to incorporate coffee into the title of this show 😅). He shares his ongoing journey with CKD or chronic kidney disease and challenges like travel for a bevy of appointments on a regular basis.Mr. Cool Beans brings up a great point during the conversation about revisiting joyful and honestly nostalgic periods of life when living with chronic health situations. In his case that currently involves a return to the world of Pokemon card collections. I know for a fact that others (me!) go to similar lighthearted activities to escape reality at times! Season 3 Episode 88 featuring Mandie Kijinski, Host of The Powers at Play
Mandie Kijinski (@AmandaRKijinski) talks about her podcast, the Powers at Play, on this episode and the diversity of guests who join her for real conversations. I really respect her approach to interviewing people who don’t share some of her views while maintaining empathy. One point that I find especially important from talking with Mandie regarding disability is how we all know someone who has a disability and/or chronic illness. Basically, we don’t have to look far to find people who have disabilities of some type (often beyond physical). It’s possible to treat one as humans first above any other label! Thank you again to Mandie for sharing your experiences and helping me with starting this podcast over a year ago!In the next episode, @TheMaddyUllman is my guest!Catch new episodes on Friday on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! Season 3 Episode 86 featuring Danny Kurtzman and Steve Way
@DannyKurtzman and @TheSteveWay visited the TyePod in this episode to talk all things acting (Good Things, Bad Things)! I asked them about their experiences becoming actors while living life with progressive disability and what it’s been like to overcome many of the obstacles in the field. They emphasized the gains that are still happening despite many of the persistent limitations keeping more people with disabilities from careers in every area of film. Something that left an impact on me was how much solidarity and strength they shared while acknowledging the recent challenges our community is facing. For example, they shared their outlook on dating with a disability which has been extremely frustrating for many of us even with the convenience of apps. By being authentic with ourselves and others, each of us can embrace the real beauty of disability! In the next episode, the host of the Hot Mess Espresso @Heather.Herington joins the TyePod!Catch new episodes on Friday on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! Season 3 Episode 85 featuring @DrOfComics
Alona, @DrOfComics, joins me to explore the world of superheroes and antiheroes and how comic storytelling offers a revealing window into society, including many ableist assumptions that often shape it.She made a particularly insightful point: unlike many other genres, comics tend to treat emotions more realistically. The traditional “happy ending” that dominates so much of film and television is rarely the final destination in comics. Instead, characters have lives that constantly fluctuate through the range of emotions. Happiness, sadness, and all other feelings are not final destinations in fantasy or reality. That idea mirrors a widespread ableist belief about disability. The assumption that people with disabilities are simply waiting to be cured so their story can finally reach its “happy ending.” But real life, much like comics, is so much more than that. In the next episode, I talk to @DannyKurtzman and @TheSteveWay!Catch new episodes on Friday on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! Season 3 Episode 84 featuring Educationally Psyched
This episode features a conversation with Briana who is a school psychologist providing resources for educators and parents. I really appreciate her approach to dedicating effort into providing real time information that improves the experience for everyone involved in public education. I honestly did not realize that schools have a psychologist. Looking back, I would have benefited from visiting with someone like Briana on several occasions. Briana was also pregnant at the time of this podcast and shared her experience with gestational diabetes. Her story lends valuable insight into short term disability and what it can look like for expecting mothers. In the next episode, I talk to @DrOfComics who is pursuing a degree with a focus in comic books!Catch new episodes on Friday on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! S2E71 with guest Shaniece (@Nurse.Shan.Shan)
Happy Thursday! I’m excited to have Shaniece on today’s episode of the Tye-Pod! Shaniece is a nurse from Canada who has experience on the Covid front line in addition to maternity and IVF clinics. First off, I am always happy to find a fellow Swiftie to talk to about Taylor’s extensive music library. The conversation between the two of us was enjoyable and eye opening!Shaniece is the first nurse I have talked with as a podcast guest and her perspective is so valuable! I know from my own situation that it is easy to resent nurses due to some traumatic experiences. In reality, there are many nurses who are empathetic and caring with patients.I strongly feel that the only way to improve medical experiences is to truly work together and see both sides. We need to have calm, open conversations with one another about how we can improve interactions in a place that can be traumatic. I hope this episode resonates with you all! A new episode of The TyePod is now live with guest Annie Heathcote! Annie is a Disabled Advocate and Speaker living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).I first reached out to Annie when I came across a reel of her sharing her feelings about physical touch through hugging.
