A Dad's First Marathon Journey (What I Learned) - #37
Inspired by may of the guests on this show and the support of my family I have completed my first marathon in 3 hours 53 minutes . Chris and I hopped on a podcast episode to reflect on the training process, race day and lessons learned from running this event as a father. After completing this event I have a new found respect for marathon runners and truly believe that anybody can do one if they take their training seriously and set aside the time. If you are considering running for your first marathon feel free to reach out and discuss with myself and Chris, we'd love to give you the extra push. Like and Follow to hear more inspiring stories on the High Quality Fun Podcast. 7 Lessons Learned Training for My First Marathon as a Father: BUILD BETTER HABBITS - Training for a marathon while being a good dad, forced me to build better habits. I started getting to bed sooner and drinking less. ME TIME - Having the alone time with my thoughts during longer runs was monumental to my mental state. Gave me time to think through a lot. MENTAL STRENGTH - Not only are you training your body to run the distance but you are training your mind get you there and to overcome other struggles. CALORIES AND HYDRATION - I've never ran an event where you are exhausting all calorie reserves. Its very important to intake water and calories throughout the event to ensure you have fuel left in the tank to get across the finish line. TEAMWORK - With any relationship its important to plan and align on goals. For us we didn't want to sacrifice our social life or time with our kids. We had to work closely with each other to carve out time that worked for us as a unit and adjust based on the day to day. GRACE AND FLEXIBILITY - The training schedule you found online should not be treated as gospel. Things will come up and you may get injured. Don't beat yourself up you can tweak the schedule to work with your needs. As long as you are able to do the longer runs and grow that distance over time you will be successful! RECOVERY - Training for a First marathon introduced a lot of new pains and soreness. These were scary at first and could have put me out of commission but talking with other runners it turns out this was common and was easily fixed with rest, icing, and stretching. Today we talk to Stephanie who has raised her 3, soon to be 4, kids in nature through different hikes and travels. 2500 Mile Snowmobile Race (The Iron Dog) - #30
Today we talk to Kris who just recently completed the Iron Dog Pro Class. The Iron Dog is a 2500 mile snowmobile race in Alaska that took him and his teammate 5 days to complete. The Iron dog is considered the worlds longest and toughest snowmobile race in the world and after hearing about the hell these racers go through during this race I absolutely believe it. Riders are required to carry an extensive list of survival gear incase things go south and often rely on the locals and other teams to help them maintain their sleds and carry on. There is a ton of strategy involved in this event regarding when to take a break and when to ride based on weather conditions. Kris kicks off the episode by telling us about how he got into snowmobiling living in Alaska and how its led to him riding professionally throughout his life. As some one who snowmobiled in college it was super fun to hear about this event and the level of skill needed to complete this brutal event. Kris's excitement comes out as he explains the different senecios, hiccups and landscapes he had to conquer and how it was all worth it getting to be one of 15 teams to cross that finish line. Chapin is the one who inspired us to do a similar trip through Costa Rica that I still consider one of our most adventurous trips to date and it was great comparing his experiences to ours. With each and every trip Chapin and his friends found themselves winging it by only booking the motorcycles and their plane tickets ahead of time. This unscheduled trip forced them to be fully immersed in the culture and lean on the locals in ways they never expected. 11,000 Mile Harley Road Trip (30 Bitcoin Meetups) - #20
Evan always had a dream of road tripping across the United States on a Harley and decided to combine this dream with his passion for Bitcoin. Over the past few years, local meet ups have popped up across the U.S. creating local communities that lets people gather, talk and learn about Bitcoin. Evan used this as an opportunity to buy a bike, find some sponsors and ride over 11,000 miles to meet a bunch of strangers. This trip started out with a ton of unknowns but quickly took shape as his reputation grew and people caught on. I had the opportunity to meet Evan and after getting to know him a bit he actually came and crashed on my couch during his time in Michigan. We had a ton of fun for a few days and he even helped me install some backsplash in my kitchen. This trip was the first of many rides he's conducted through the U.S. and Thailand where he lives now. Bitcoiner or not, this story is very unique and it was really fun hearing Evan reminisce on this adventure that I was able to share a part in. No plan, No sense, Winging it with Patrick - #19
We talk to Patrick who tells us about a spontaneous trip to Yellow Stone. Patrick and a buddy drove 20 hours on a whim to visit this national park and quickly realized how unprepared they were while back country camping for the first time in yellow stone which is known for its dense population of buffalo grizzly bears and wolves. Throughout this trip they experienced several close encounters with bears and wolves that really showed them how deep in the wilderness they truly were. Later in the episode we talk about another trip out east where they turned off their phones and flew by the seat of their pants navigating by map completely winging each destination. This episode was a little bit stupid but showed how being prepared for the worst but having no plan makes for some really good stories. This was my second in person interview and I truly enjoyed hearing how much fun they had winging it while I puffed on a cigar and drank whiskey.
