CEDA. What is it? We’re starting to see some publicity on CEDA with local faces. It is the Commission to End Drug Abuse in Pike County. At first glance you think, this is just another bureaucratic acronym developed by a think tank in Indianapolis or Washington DC that becomes a mandate to our local governments and we've got to spend the money? The director for CEDA is Lindsey Boyd Denno. She is our guest today. She is going to straighten out on the mission and how it is working in this community. #40 - Sandy McBeth

When the 1970s rolled around, people started preparing for our bicentennial. as I sell a house from that era often I notice in the pitch of the the porch roof, or above the garage somewhere is an American Eagle with wings spread. Your kitchen wallpaper and paneling were colonial American based themes. Companies marketed colonial items and they love to put the decals or stamp of the liberty Bell or the eagle... something American. I have yet to put away all of my toys from the bicentennial! The catalysts for that 70’s era was that World War II generation that we refer to many times as the greatest generation they were patriots. What is this generation going to do with the 250th? President Trump has an initiative called America 250!  Coordinating the effort on a local level is our preeminent local historian Sandy McBeth! Thanks for joining us for this program of WFPC Podcasting!  The program is brought to you by Harris Real Estate, Hathaway Excavating and Rock Yard, Petersburg Car Wash, The Dustin Schnarr Indiana Farm Bureau Agency, Shoultz Eye Care and The Log Ends Farm Bed and Breakfast! #39 - Matt Wells

Host Randy Harris sits down with Matt Wells — a Pike County native who rose from volunteer firefighter and EMS director to Assistant Chief at the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office. They discuss his personal journey, major responses like the 2005 tornado, and how small-town values shaped his career. The episode explores the State Fire Marshal’s mission: fire prevention, investigations, and safety regulations, plus real-world issues like arson, product recalls, and smoke alarm importance. It also covers how technology — cell data, AI, drones, 3D scans, and forensic science — is changing investigations and public safety.

    #38 - Buck Seger

Welcome to WFPC Podcasting! This is a weekly look at news, information and the people in and around Pike County! One thing that endeared Pike County to me, when I pulled into town, was community and caring about each other. 70 years ago, some of the people in the community realized we needed a stronger baseball presence within the community. After all, the best first baseman in major league ball played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was from right here. So a few individuals, parents, business owners, started meeting in the above the Voyles IGA Building in Johnny and Virginia’s office, in what is now to White Brick Hair Salon. Deb Minnis started hauling in sand to what became the American Legion Baseball Field. Lem and Louise MCClellan started hosting fish fries to raise money… the whole community was involved and ready to play ball for the 1957 season! Today, that community still exists on the American Legion Baseball Field. When we were starting WFPC Podcasting months ago, I was telling the Little League President’s husband about the podcast and he said, “We need to promote the little league at sign up time.” Here we are. And the position of dealing with Randy was dealt 6 for 7 months ago to Buck Seger. Thanks for joining us for this program of WFPC Podcasting! As you notice WFPC Podcasting is incorporating new sponsors to the program. Many thanks to Kyle Hathaway for his continued sponsorship as well as Harris Real Estate and Petersburg Car Wash. Welcome to The Dustin Schnarr Agency, Shoultz Eye Care and The Log Ends Farm Bed and Breakfast. WFPC Podcasting is not as expensive as the overhead of a radio station, but there is still overhead and we hope you thank our sponsors for their support. We hope to grow WFPC and it’s list of sponsors in the future to provide more quality programing. One of the mainstays around Winslow for the last hundred years, and usually we use that term loosely, but in this case is not an exaggeration, is Marilee Hume. Marilee was born in 1926! She and her husband Ernie were two of my first friends when I pulled into Pike County! In fact, I interviewed her dad, John Russ on WFPC Radio in 1988 for Veterans Day because he was the last surviving WWI veteran. She carries on that tradition, she is our guest today and we have a lot to discuss! Welcome to WPFC Podcasting! This is a weekly look at news, information and the people in and around Pike County! During and following World War II, our country was on high alert and prepared for potential attacks. President Franklin Roosevelt established the Office of Civil Defense which prepared our communities not only for those potential attacks, but also to coordinate medical, health and protective measures. Then came the cold war and the Civil Defense Act of 1950.  The program evolved and over the years the program shifted toward general emergency management. The name changed to the Emergency Management Agency and the program, the world, continues to evolve!  We have two guests today, one is the Pike County Emergency Management Agency Director, who also administers out 911 Emergency call center, Kyler Henry, who is somewhat new to this position, but he has a mentor. Matthew Goebel who is the director of the EMA for neighboring Warrick County.   Thanks for joining us for this program of WFPC Podcasting!  The program is brought to you by Harris Real Estate, Hathaway Excavating and Rock Yard and Petersburg Car Wash. Please like the podcast and share with your friends so more people can hear about WFPC. #31 - WFPC 2025 Recap

Thanks for joining us in 2025 for WFPC podcasting where we explored the people, information and news right here in Pike County! I've been blessed with three careers. It started out with broadcasting, transitioned into politics, which transitioned into properties and real estate. They've all kind of worked in harmony together with one leading to the other. Broadcasting has changed over the years but at the heart of it was communicating with people. And what brought me to Pike County in 1988 was WFPC Radio. The great thing about that was connecting with the people specifically, the people of Pike County and in this area of rural Indiana. As the medium has changed, a new technology has been introduced. Which is very similar to what we did back in the day and that is podcasting. Another blessing has been getting to meet Dylan Query and pitching him the idea which is very similar to what WFPC radio was and that is focusing on and connecting with the people right here. The newsmakers, the one with information about the community and the history and future through its people. So welcome to WFPC podcasting! A special thanks to Denise my wife for accepting all these projects, my daughters Jayla and Jenna for being a sounding board as well. Friends, our guests, and Angela in the office helping to keep things going in the right direction. Thanks to our sponsors, specifically Kyle Hathaway. Maybe as we grow your business can be a part of sharing in this venture as well. Also a big thanks to you for watching and collaborating. And thanks to God for letting it all happen.   Segment 1 We started this out on May 28 and although it was a bit of a learning curve in that first month, we had some great guests sharing and exploring this story which included Clint Swisher, a photographer from Texas who has taken some old coal mine ground that was turned into a Boy Scout camp and is expanding it into a theme park in Cato, Indiana! We also visited with Steve and Beverly Knight who turned some acreage in Western Pike County into a premier garden spot for the midwest with the Azalea path. Jill Hyneman of the chamber of commerce continues to engage the community in working together to build an even better Pike county. Ashley Polen Willis tirelessly works on growth and economic development to be competitive with our neighbors and we started out with Randall Hedden a renowned artist who built the mural of one of our favorite sons Gil Hodges. In this clip he tells a story that as he was working on this mural in his art studio in Arizona,  a friend brought another friend.  Let’s watch….   Segment 2 In June, we spoke with Dr. Dunigan who turned 95 this year!  He still dabbles at the office but he continues to grow and thrive after 65 years in dentistry right here in Pike County. Brooke Gobel spoke with us about the extension office and the Pike County fair. Sandy Macbeth a historian told us stuff that we didn't know about our history center and we also spoke with Tom Morrison, patriot, a retired teacher, who also talked With us on Veterans Day about his service during Vietnam.   Segment 3 During August, we got to visit with Tony Rothrock an incredible musician who has been making music right here since early childhood. Mayor RC Klipsch explained to us how the Buffalo trace festival, that continues to grow, started. Bob Price in his 90s continues to have an incredible attitude. Sheriff Jason Mckinney gave us an update on his departments and author Mitch Stinson spoke with us about a book highlighting Winslow, Indiana basketball.    Segment 4 For September, we met with two new principles in our School Corporation, Melissa Pancake at Petersburg elementary and David Couchenour at Pike Central. State Senator Daryl Schmitt gave us an update on the legislature, Chris Young explained Pike counties emergency management service from the early days and how it grew into what it is now.   Segment 5 As we got into the fall, Irma Capehart Burch shared memories of Jefferson Township going all the way back to the depression. Denny Weitkamp told us about many of the programs The Pike county veterans services can assist with for our veterans. We had a a great visit with Alene Grubb, who is 95 and thriving. Our Coroner, Nick Henson updated us on that department of county government and Dr. Fenol who has served this community for well over 40 years, talked about his faith and life of service with us.   Segment 6 In November, the guy behind the camera, Dylan Query came and sat in front of the microphone and talked about leaving the big city to start his film company right here at his childhood home in rural Indiana. Pike County Highway Garage Josh Byrd explained how with limited local resources his department continues to grow the 551 miles of roadway that they maintain. Tom Rudolph along with Tony Hinkle a couple of area farmers Explained the goal and purpose of regenerative farming and David Holmes shared with us his experiences of moving to Pike County in the early 1960s.   Segment 7 We rounded out the year with interviews, including Petersburg, assistant police chief Chad McClellan, who also moonlights at Pike Central high school teaching the next generation about criminal justice. #30 - Andy Anderson

It’s always good on WFPC to visit with longtime friends.  Recently we had a chance to talk with Howard “Andy" Anderson, a long-time Pike County teacher and coach who had a dual career with the Army and Army Reserves.  Years ago I had the opportunity to speak with a couple of Andy’s social studies classes.  It didn’t take long to realize that he had a lot of real life stories to add color to his students lessons.  Some highlights of our recent discussion chronicled his beginnings on a farm in Cuzco, Indiana, the consolidation of Cuzco high school to Dubois, then on to Butler University to learn under Tony Hinkle, a transfer to Oakland City College and then his military career and coaching career that started in Francisco, stopped back home at Dubois, then Otwell and finally at Pike Central! Here are some highlights of our conversation!

You’ve got the park to maintain, streets to build….great decisions come and go, but then you’ve always got pot holes to fill and weed letters to send out, visits to make…. Back when I served as mayor we had a great organization called the Petersburg Jaycees and they ran an annual community get together called the Catfish Festival.  But after many years with a changing society, service organizations started fade. #10 - Mitch Stinson

Welcome to WPFC Podcasting! This is a weekly look at news, information and the people in and around Pike County! Before the consolidation of Pike County Schools for the 1974-75 school year, the three remaining high schools were Otwell, Petersburg and Winslow. And when it comes to small-town Indiana schools, many were defined by the success of the basketball program!  It was a way of life… and only needing a handful or two of participants small schools could compete with programs that had larger student bodies.  Otwell had some great success especially in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.  Petersburg had some sporadic success throughout the years… but Winslow… year in and year out… Winslow was pretty dominate. There is a book that’s out called "Eskimo Fever."  It was written by Mitchell Stinson. #5 - Clint Swisher

Welcome to WPFC Podcasting! This is a weekly look at news and information in and around Pike County! Our heritage of Coal Mining in Pike County is a deep vein. Fact check me, but I think 38% of our geography has been coal mined.  That, in part, is why our 334 square miles of land, only has about 12,500 inhabitants.  Our foot print is larger than that of New York City! One of the coal mines, this one in Jefferson Township, near Cato, the property was gifted by Old Ben Coal, to the Buffalo Trace Council of the Boy Scouts and they built a regional scout retreat.  A few years ago, that property became expendable by the scouts and was purchased by Clint and Michelle Swisher.

The world has changed since those early days of WFPC.  Our neighbors have changed, Pike County has changed, people change, roads have changed!  And as you drive in on I-69, at exit 46, you notice this very modern looking blue and whit building. It is the Elmer Buchta Technology Center, which in part houses the Pike County Economic Development Center! Our guest today is the director of that center and her task is to pull all of these moving parts together to help us adapt to some of this changing world, yet keep Pike County the great place and home that it is! Thanks for joining us for this program of WFPC Podcasting!  The program is brought to you by Harris Real Estate and Petersburg Car Wash.
