Episode 104 - You Are the Mom God Chose: Faith, Mental Health, and Parenting with Purpose with Laurie Devernoe
Date: April 13, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Laurie Devernoe Story Highlights: In this warm and deeply encouraging episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek welcomes back Laurie Devernoe for a conversation that feels less like an interview and more like a breath of fresh air, honest, grounded, and full of grace. Laurie opens with a story that has become something of a legend in her household: the day she called 911 to report her seven-year-old son Caleb missing at the gym, only to find him moments later in the coach's office, deep in a conversation about Minecraft. Her teenagers dubbed her a "SWAT team mom," and the name stuck. But beneath the laughter is something genuinely important: Laurie's vigilance that day led her to speak a simple but powerful truth to the facility's manager. Children should never be alone in a closed room with an adult, no matter who that adult is. It is the kind of wisdom that flows naturally from a mother who pays attention. From there, the conversation turns to Laurie's extraordinary early years of motherhood, triplet daughters followed by a fourth baby just eighteen months later, and eventually a fifth child eight years after that. She describes managing her household the only way she knew how coming from a corporate background: with color-coded spreadsheets, matching outfits, and a schedule for everything. Beneath all that beautiful organization, however, Laurie was quietly battling what she now recognizes as high-functioning anxiety, a relentless internal scanning that, when pushed past its limits, came out as anger. She speaks with remarkable honesty about what it took to finally name that struggle and begin to address it. Debbie and Laurie explore the intersection of faith and mental health with particular tenderness. Drawing from the story of Elijah, who after calling down fire from heaven fled in despair and asked to die, Laurie reminds listeners that having a relationship with God is not an insurance policy against mental health struggles. It is the place we return to when those struggles come. She shares how her own mother suffered with clinical depression and seasonal affective disorder for years, never receiving the help she needed because seeking it was once considered a sign of weak faith. The church, Laurie notes with gratitude, is in a far better place today, embracing therapy, outside support, and even medication as gifts rather than failures. The episode also takes a practical turn toward screen time, technology, and the ever-present challenge of raising children in a digital world. Laurie and Debbie, referencing insights from a previous episode with Barb Winters, discuss the importance of parental controls, phone baskets during family time, and the power of modeling the behavior we hope to see in our children. Laurie shares how she leaned on her older children to help evaluate what her youngest was playing and watching, turning awareness into a family-wide effort rather than a solo burden. At the heart of everything Laurie shares is a concept she encountered early in her parenting journey through a cassette tape series called Spirit Beings, the idea that our children are not just physical beings to be fed and bathed and put to bed, but spiritual ones who need to be nourished in their souls. That conviction shaped how she raised her five children: with worship music in the home, age-appropriate Bibles, family devotional time even when it happened in two cars calling each other on the way home from sports, and a daily rhythm of prayer and Scripture that, decades later, her grown children carry with them still. This conversation is a reminder that the years that feel the most overwhelming often turn out to be the ones that leave the deepest mark, and that apart from Jesus, as Laurie and Debbie agree, we truly can do nothing. But with Him, we can do far more than we imagine. About Our Guest: Laurie Devernoe is a Christian speaker and mental health coach known for bringing faith to life through engaging, down-to-earth teaching. She helps individuals and families move beyond surviving daily routines to living impactful, faith-centered lives that support mental health and strengthen families. As a mother of five, including triplets, Laurie understands real life and connects with others by blending Scripture with relatable stories and simple, doable practices that help faith take root in everyday moments. Laurie is the author of Coffee House Parenting, inspired by decades of conversations with other moms, and the award-winning memoir Seeing Through the Darkness: The Incredible Story of How Losing My Sight Taught Me to See. Her latest book, You Are the Mom, is a 40-day devotional written for anyone who has ever loved and raised a child, to replace exhaustion and self-doubt with Scripture, grace, and the quiet confidence that God equipped you exactly for this. Book Spotlight: You Are the Mom by Laurie Devernoe Today's mothers are carrying more than any spreadsheet can track, and beneath the schedules, the meal plans, and the matching outfits, many are quietly wondering whether they are enough. You Are the Mom is a 40-day devotional that speaks directly into that exhaustion and self-doubt, offering Scripture, grace, and the gentle reassurance that God did not assign you your children by accident. He equipped you, exactly as you are, for exactly them. Drawing from her own journey through triplets, high-functioning anxiety, a mother's quiet suffering, and the slow, faithful work of building a Christ-centered home, Laurie writes with the warmth of someone who has sat in the hard places and found God faithful there. This devotional is for the mom who needs permission to stop striving and start abiding, and a reminder that everything she needs, she already has access to through Jesus. Connect with Laurie: Website: https://lauriedevernoe.com Facebook and Instagram: Coffee House Parenting Her Book: You Are the Mom: A 40-Day Devotional Closing Thought: Parenting is not a performance. It is a daily returning, to grace, to Scripture, to the One who gives us everything we need for life and godliness. As Laurie reminds us, the legacy we leave is not found in perfectly matched outfits or color-coded spreadsheets. It is found in the quiet, faithful patterns we model for our children: where we go when we struggle, what we say when we are afraid, and how we return again and again to the heart of God.

Episode 103 - Faith the Size of a Mustard Seed: Between Hope and Despair with Renee Rizzo Devore
Date: April 2, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Renée Rizzo Devore Story Highlights: What does it look like to carry deep wounds into a life of profound purpose? In this meaningful and hope-filled episode of The Women Behind the Words, Deb sits down with Renée Rizzo Devore, counselor, chaplain, author, and lifelong advocate for the broken, for a conversation that is equal parts raw and redemptive. Their connection through mutual friend Bud Zegel quickly gives way to a shared passion: helping people find real, lasting hope in the hardest places of life. Renée opens up about her journey from 18 years as CEO of Hope Clinic for Women to her current double master's program at Denver Seminary, and how her calling has always been about more than meeting physical needs. She creates sacred spaces where brokenness is met with compassion and where hope can finally take root. Together, Deb and Renée explore how childhood pain can either hold us back or become a powerful part of our healing story. Renée introduces the concept of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and shares from her own trauma history, explaining how resilience and faith can transform deep wounds into genuine points of connection with others. Their conversation gently reminds us that while pain can shape us, it does not have to define us, and that true healing allows us to live as a reflection of the Gospel rather than feeling the need to defend it. A standout moment in their discussion is the distinction between earthly hope and eternal hope. Renée beautifully articulates how true hope flows from God through Jesus and is sustained by the Holy Spirit, while also making room for something the church often overlooks: lament. Deb and Renée speak honestly about grief, reminding listeners that sorrow is not a sign of weak faith but an invitation to draw closer to God. In a world that rushes people past their pain, this conversation is a refreshing reminder that hope and lament can and should coexist. The episode also dives into the challenge of waiting seasons and what it means to hold contentment and desire in the same open hand. Renée shares candidly from her own experience of waiting for marriage, encouraging listeners to remain active and engaged in life while trusting God with the outcome. Deb reflects on her own current season, including her upcoming book Lord, Take the Lead, and her continued trust in God's ability to bring clarity, peace, and purpose at every stage of life. Renée speaks with refreshing honesty about fear and faith, reminding us that obstacles are not always a sign that something has gone wrong. Sometimes they are simply invitations to a deeper trust. She shares her personal journey of learning to stop guarding her own heart through people-pleasing and over-serving, and what it looked like to surrender that role to God. This shift becomes a powerful picture of what it truly means to trust Him in every area of life. She also offers practical, grounded tools for cultivating hope in everyday life, drawing from her book All You Need Is a Mustard Seed: Between Hope and Despair. From worship and movement to journaling, healthy rhythms, and the power of saying no, Renée provides simple yet impactful strategies for staying rooted in faith. One of the most memorable insights she shares: every no is a future yes, a reminder that boundaries are not walls but acts of intentional, faithful living. The episode closes with a conversation about navigating spiritual calling within marriage and the importance of unity, wisdom, and seeking wise counsel when needed. Renée offers a heartfelt word for anyone who has been hurt by the church, a gentle but firm encouragement to run toward God, not away from Him, and to trust Him to lead them to a safe and supportive community. This episode ends as a prayerful invitation to hope, to healing, and to renewed faith, leaving listeners seen, encouraged, and reminded that even in the hardest seasons, hope is always within reach. About Our Guest: Renée Rizzo Devore is a counselor, chaplain, coach, author, and speaker with a lifelong passion for helping broken people find hope. She served for 18 years as CEO of Hope Clinic for Women before transitioning to finish a double master's degree at Denver Seminary in Biblical/Theological Studies and Pastoral Care/Counseling. She also serves as a part-time chaplain with Marketplace Chaplains and works as a fitness instructor and one-on-one coach, covering topics including trauma-informed care, boundaries, healthy relationships, caring for caregivers, and mission and strategy. A sought-after speaker throughout her region, Renée addresses topics like unplanned pregnancy, the effects of abortion, co-dependency, worthiness, singleness, and hope. She holds a BS in Finance and Economics and is certified in Circle Group Facilitation, Stephen Ministry, Level I and II Murray Method, and Barre Fitness. She was named to Nashville's Business Journal Women of Influence list and was a finalist for the CEO of the Year Award from the Center for Nonprofit Management. Renée was married for the first time in October 2025 at 57 years old, a beautiful testament to the very hope she writes and speaks about. Everything she does filters through her faith and the Lord's leading in her life. Book Spotlight: All You Need Is a Mustard Seed: Between Hope and Despair by Renée Rizzo Devore Life is not made up of a single hard season. It is a series of them. And in each one, hope can feel just a little harder to hold onto. In All You Need Is a Mustard Seed, Renée draws from Scripture, her own story, and years of walking alongside hurting people to offer a frank, vulnerable, and deeply practical guide to choosing hope no matter what life throws at you. This is not a book for one kind of struggle or one kind of person. It is for anyone whose hope has quietly started to wane, whether they are firmly planted in the church, sitting on the fringe, or somewhere in between. Renée tackles the questions many of us are afraid to ask out loud: What is the difference between eternal hope and earthly hope? How do you hold onto hope when you are not happy? How do you keep believing when you have been waiting for what feels like forever? How do you face hope in the middle of obstacles, fear, and dead ends? How do you guard your heart when things are actually going well? Weaving together Bible stories, personal experiences, and her own hope toolbox of practical strategies, Renée makes a compelling case that you do not need a mountain of faith to get through the hardest days. You just need a mustard seed. Connect with Renée: Website: reneerizzo.coach Email: [email protected] Book: All You Need is a Mustard Seed: Between Hope and Despair Closing Thought: Renée's life is proof that hope is not wishful thinking. It is a daily, deliberate choice. Her story reminds us that waiting is not wasted, that wounds can become wisdom, and that even the smallest seed of faith, planted in the right soil, can grow into something extraordinary. If your hope needs renewing today, this episode is for you.

Episode 102 - Living Loved: Gentle Soul Care, Abiding in Christ, and Finding Healing with Jesus with Tammy Gerhard
Date: March 20, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Tammy Gerhard Story Highlights: In this warm and spirit-filled episode of The Women Behind the Words, host Deb Dufek sits down with Tammy Gerhard, a Christian speaker, author, counselor, chaplain, and small-business owner whose life and ministry are rooted in one simple, powerful truth: that every person is deeply loved by Jesus. With over twenty-two years of experience as a trauma-informed school counselor and a master's degree in counseling, Tammy brings both professional wisdom and personal vulnerability to this conversation. Whether she is leading a retreat, writing a blog post, or serving a cup of coffee, her mission remains beautifully consistent: guiding people toward soul care so they can learn to live loved by Jesus and love others well. Tammy opens up about the heart behind Mindful Mondays: Time with Jesus, her weekly interactive blog designed to help people begin each week anchored in Scripture, not through striving or performance, but through gentleness, presence, and relationship. She speaks candidly about why tone matters when sharing God's Word, especially for those who have experienced harsh or conditional presentations of faith. For Tammy, Scripture is not a measuring stick. It is medicine, and it meets people right where they are. The conversation also explores Tammy's role as founder of Gather for Women, an after-hours community created to foster connection, soul care, and growth among women from diverse backgrounds and denominations. With a heart for unity over comparison, Tammy has built a space where women can share their stories, grow as emerging speakers and leaders, and experience God's love together, not in isolation, but in community. Tammy also shares the story behind her specialty coffee shop in Connecticut, which has become an unexpected gathering place for interdenominational connection and healing. Through both her physical storefront and her growing online presence, she regularly walks alongside those who have experienced church hurt, gently reminding them that God's love is inclusive, pursuing, and patient, and that it never runs out. One of the most powerful threads woven throughout this episode is Tammy's exploration of attunement, the calming, regulating presence of God in our lives. Drawing from her counseling background and her personal faith walk, she describes how learning to abide in Christ through humility and surrender has transformed her approach to spiritual growth. True transformation, she reminds us, is not something we manufacture through effort. It is something that happens when we open ourselves to God's presence in the everyday. Tammy also tenderly honors the legacy of her mentor, Cindy McDowell, whose teachings on spiritual healing and God's love continue to shape her ministry. Inspired by Cindy's unexpected passing, Tammy committed to capturing and sharing those life-giving messages through blogs, recordings, and creative projects, trusting that God would use them to help others hear His voice and experience healing through Scripture. This episode is a beautiful reminder that healing is rarely loud or rushed. It happens slowly, gently, and in relationship, and that Jesus meets us not with condemnation, but with a love that restores the soul. About Our Guest: Tammy Gerhard is a Christian speaker, author, counselor, and coach with a deep desire to help people experience the love of Jesus in practical and life-giving ways. She holds an MA in Counseling and has spent more than twenty-two years serving as a school counselor with a trauma-informed focus. As a licensed and ordained chaplain, she walks alongside individuals in seasons of challenge, healing, and growth. Tammy is also the founder of Gather for Women and the owner of a specialty coffee shop in Connecticut. In every area of her ministry and work, her passion remains the same: guiding others toward soul care so they can learn to live loved by Jesus and love others well. Book Spotlight: Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs and I Love My Community: A Kids Activity Book These warm and engaging children's books from Tammy Gerhard are more than just a fun read. They are gentle guides that help young hearts navigate the world around them with kindness and courage. Through simple, relatable stories, kids learn to identify and understand their emotions, build meaningful friendships, and discover the incredible power that small acts of kindness have to create stronger, more caring communities. Written with empathy at the center, these books plant seeds of compassion early and give children a language for love that will stay with them for years to come. Perfect for home, classrooms, and community settings, they are an ideal gift for any child ready to learn what it means to truly care for others. Rooted in the same message that shapes her Mindful Mondays blog and the retreats she leads, this book offers practical, accessible ways to nurture the soul and live loved in the everyday. Whether you are just beginning your faith journey or looking to go deeper, Soul Care for All Ages will meet you right where you are. Connect with Tammy: Instagram: @tammygerhard and @tammygerharauthor Facebook: @tammygerhard and @tammygerhard-author All Links: linktr.ee/tammygerhard Closing Thought: Tammy's story reminds us that the most powerful ministry often happens in the quietest moments, over a warm cup of coffee, in the pages of a weekly blog, or in a room full of women choosing community over competition. God does not wait until we have it all together. He meets us in the middle of our mess, our doubt, and our healing, and He calls it all holy.

Episode 101 - Keeping it Real with Amarelee Quintanilla
Date: March 5, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Amarelee Quintanilla Story Highlights: In this honest and deeply thought provoking episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek welcomes author and journalist Amarelee Quintanilla for a meaningful conversation about a topic many believers quietly wrestle with but rarely discuss openly: hypocrisy within the Christian life. Raised in a strict Christian denomination that placed strong emphasis on moral living and adherence to the Ten Commandments, Amarelee grew up with a clear understanding of right and wrong. Yet beneath that structure, she began to wrestle with deeper questions about grace, mercy, and the difference between outward obedience and true heart transformation. After experiencing disappointment and spiritual hurt within the church, Amarelee found herself questioning whether she even wanted to remain part of the Christian community. The gap between what people professed and how they lived created deep disillusionment. For a time, it nearly led her to walk away from faith altogether. But God was not finished with her story. Through a season of conviction and reflection, the Lord began revealing something unexpected. While hypocrisy around her had been painful, He also began exposing hidden pride, fear of people’s opinions, and a subtle focus on appearing righteous rather than being transformed from the inside out. That painful but freeing process ultimately became the foundation for Amarelee’s devotional book, Keeping It Real: Daily Devotions for Those Tired of Pretending. Writing became a pathway to healing, honesty, and deeper spiritual growth. Together, Debbie and Amarelee explore how writing, prayer, and self examination can become powerful tools for spiritual and emotional restoration when guided by the Holy Spirit. They also discuss why hypocrisy can be especially damaging to those outside the church, particularly young people and seekers who may reject Christianity not because of Christ, but because of the behavior they see in believers. Amarelee offers an encouraging reminder that while none of us will be completely free from hypocrisy this side of heaven, we can become more aware of it, more honest about it, and quicker to repent when God reveals it in our hearts. Her message is both simple and powerful: when God convicts us, it is not condemnation. It is an invitation to healing. Through humility, honesty, and a deep love for Jesus, we can continue removing the hidden weeds in our hearts and walk in greater freedom, authenticity, and grace. About Our Guest: Amarelee Quintanilla is an author and journalist who writes both nonfiction and fiction, blending storytelling with insights drawn from real life. With a graduate degree in Journalism and years of experience in broadcasting and documentary production, she has spent much of her career exploring meaningful human stories through words and images. Her faith plays a central role in her work as she examines topics such as psychology, spiritual growth, and the Christian life with honesty and depth. Her goal is always to encourage readers to grow in faith, self awareness, and authentic relationship with God. Her devotional book Keeping It Real: Daily Devotions for Those Tired of Pretending was nominated for the prestigious Golden Scroll Award. When she is not writing, Amarelee enjoys traveling and discovering new cultures around the world. She currently lives in Colorado where she continues writing and creating projects that encourage deeper faith and personal reflection. Book Spotlight: Keeping It Real: Daily Devotions for Those Tired of Pretending by Amarelee Quintanilla What does authentic Christianity actually look like beneath the surface? In a culture where appearances often matter more than honesty, many believers quietly feel pressure to present a polished spiritual image. But beneath that surface, many struggle with doubts, insecurities, pride, and hidden struggles they feel unable to talk about. Keeping It Real was written for those who are exhausted from trying to appear spiritually perfect. This powerful 40 day devotional invites readers into a deeply personal journey of reflection, honesty, and renewal. Each devotional encourages believers to move beyond outward appearances and instead cultivate a genuine relationship with Christ rooted in humility, repentance, and grace. Through Scripture, thoughtful reflection, and practical spiritual insight, the book helps readers examine their hearts, confront hidden struggles, and rediscover the freedom that comes from living authentically before God. Rather than offering quick fixes or surface level encouragement, Keeping It Real creates space for believers to step away from performance based faith and experience a quieter, deeper transformation led by the Holy Spirit. It is a devotional designed for weary believers who long to live out their faith in a way that is sincere, relatable, and rooted in the example of Jesus Himself. Episode 100 - Navigating High-Stakes Conversations with Grace and Truth with Angela Mackey
Date: February 24, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Angela Mackey Story Highlights: In this thoughtful and timely episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek welcomes author, nurse, and Bible teacher Angela Mackey for a practical and spiritually grounded conversation about navigating high stakes conversations in today’s emotionally charged culture. From family conflict and church hurt to politically sensitive topics and parenting challenges, Angela speaks directly to believers who want to communicate in a way that reflects Christ, even when discussions feel tense, personal, or divisive. Drawing from biblical principles and insights from the leadership classic Crucial Conversations, she explains that the most important preparation for any difficult conversation begins long before words are spoken. High stakes conversations begin in the heart. Angela encourages listeners to examine their internal dialogue before addressing someone else’s behavior. What fears are driving your reaction? What assumptions are you making? What story are you telling yourself about the other person’s motives? Many conversations escalate not because of facts, but because of unchecked emotion and misinterpreted intent. Throughout the episode, Deb and Angela explore how Scripture calls believers to hold both truth and grace in tension. Too much truth without grace can wound. Too much grace without truth can compromise integrity. Loving well requires both. Angela shares personal insights from her experience as a nurse during the COVID 19 pandemic and from her own journey through infertility and pregnancy loss, which later inspired her book Difficult to Conceive. These seasons refined her understanding of humility, compassion, and the necessity of gentleness when engaging people who see the world differently. Together, Deb and Angela discuss: • How to pause, pray, and clarify your purpose before entering a difficult conversation • Why curiosity disarms defensiveness and builds trust • Creating safe spaces in families and churches where honest dialogue can happen • Addressing church hurt with courage, kindness, and biblical wisdom • The difference between forgiveness and reconciliation • Why communication strategies must be guided by the Holy Spirit Angela reminds us that the goal of hard conversations is not control, victory, or proving a point. The goal is Christlikeness. When we surrender our tone, motives, and responses to the Holy Spirit, even difficult discussions can become opportunities for growth, healing, and deeper unity. This episode offers practical communication tools grounded in Scripture for anyone who desires to honor God, protect relationships, and reflect His love in a divided world. Key Takeaways: • High stakes conversations begin in the heart before they happen out loud • Examine your fears and assumptions before addressing someone else’s behavior • Approach difficult discussions with curiosity rather than a need to win • Balance truth and grace because leaning too far in either direction damages communication • Create safe spaces for honest dialogue, especially within families and church communities • Forgiveness may be necessary even when reconciliation is not possible • Communication tools are helpful, but they must be guided by the Holy Spirit and grounded in Scripture About Our Guest: Angela Mackey is a follower of Christ who is passionate about helping believers rethink their thinking in light of Scripture so they can live transformed lives. She holds a Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies and serves as an author, podcaster, and speaker. Angela is the host of the Life as Worship podcast, a member of the Maxwell Certified Leadership Team, and a retreat and conference speaker. In addition to her ministry work, she is a nurse whose real world experiences have shaped her perspective on humility, compassion, and loving well when we disagree. Angela lives in Arkansas with her family and their dogs. Angela’s Areas of Expertise • Infertility, pregnancy loss, and infertility treatments • Lamenting and overcoming seasons of spiritual darkness • Finding joy in all circumstances • Living a life of worship • Renewing the mind through Scripture • Loving well in disagreement Book Spotlight: Difficult to Conceive by Angela Mackey When Angela Mackey lost two babies in early pregnancy and later her fallopian tubes, she walked through one of the darkest seasons of her life. In that grief, God met her through His Word and began reshaping how she viewed suffering, identity, and hope. Difficult to Conceive is more than a personal testimony about infertility and pregnancy loss. It is a biblically grounded guide for couples navigating infertility, offering theological clarity, spiritual encouragement, and practical tools for renewing the mind during prolonged disappointment. Angela walks readers through: • Processing grief through lament rooted in Scripture • Reframing identity when dreams are shattered • Strengthening marriage in the midst of infertility treatments • Learning to worship God even when prayers seem unanswered • Finding joy and purpose in seasons that feel barren This book offers compassionate understanding while consistently pointing readers back to God’s character, sovereignty, and faithfulness. It is especially helpful for individuals and couples seeking a Christ centered perspective on infertility, pregnancy loss, and enduring hope. Connect with Angela: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/share/1AAP4zGYWc/?mibextid=wwXIfr Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rethinking_my_thinking Closing Thought: Difficult conversations are inevitable. Division does not have to be. When we examine our hearts, surrender our motives, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our words, even the hardest discussions can reflect the grace and truth of Christ.

Episode 99 - Shine, Don’t Whine: Trading Complaining for a Christ-Centered Attitude with Cherrilynn Brisbano
Date: February 17, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Cherrilynn Brisbano Story Highlights: In this Scripture rich and deeply honest episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek welcomes award winning author, spiritual coach, chaplain, and military veteran Cherrilynn Brisbano for a powerful conversation on spiritual growth, identity in Christ, and the transforming power of God’s Word. Cherrilynn brings decades of experience in ministry, writing, and leadership, but what stands out most is her approachable, prayerful heart. She is known for meeting women right where they are, often stopping to pray with them in the middle of everyday life. In this episode, she opens up about one of the most pivotal spiritual lessons of her life: when the Lord gently but firmly confronted her complaining spirit. During a season marked by physical pain, financial strain, parenting challenges, and emotional exhaustion, Cherrilynn cried out to God for an attitude adjustment. The Holy Spirit answered through Philippians 2. As she meditated on the passage, God used His Word like a surgeon’s instrument, performing what she now calls spiritual heart surgery. That moment became the foundation for what she later named the STAR Principle. STAR stands for: See yourself as God sees you Transform your mind with the Word of God Always pray Refine to shine Cherrilynn also shares how childhood abuse distorted her sense of identity and how memorizing and meditating on passages such as Ephesians 1 and Psalm 139 reshaped her understanding of who she is in Christ. Through Scripture, she began to see herself as chosen, loved, holy, and blameless. Not because of performance, but because of Christ. Throughout this faith filled conversation, she emphasizes the partnership between the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Scripture memorization is not about striving. It is about transformation. God uses His Word to renew our minds, anchor our identity, and equip us with spiritual strength for everyday battles. The episode also explores practicing the presence of God, inspired by Brother Lawrence. Cherrilynn shares how continual conversation with the Lord, whether walking, praying for strangers, navigating conflict, or stepping back from social media, has become a lifeline during seasons of grief and weariness. As the conversation closes, she prays a moving prayer woven entirely from Scripture and leaves listeners with a steady reminder: Jesus loves you. Nothing can separate you from His love. God is faithful to complete the work He has begun. If you are longing for deeper intimacy with God, renewed thinking, or freedom from patterns that have held you back, this episode offers biblical encouragement and practical steps rooted in truth. Key Takeaways: God uses His Word to lovingly transform our attitudes and heal our identity Complaining loses its grip when we learn to see ourselves as God sees us Memorizing Scripture renews the mind and equips us for spiritual battles Practicing God’s presence can happen in ordinary daily moments Jesus’ love is constant, personal, and unchanging About Our Guest: Cherrilynn Brisbano is an award winning fiction and nonfiction author, speaker, certified spiritual coach, chaplain, and United States military veteran. She has spent decades teaching the Bible, discipling women, and encouraging others to grow in Christ through the power of Scripture and prayer. Known for her authenticity and warmth, Cherrilynn has a passion for helping women break free from negative thought patterns and embrace their true identity in Christ. Her ministry centers on practical biblical application, Scripture memorization, and Spirit led transformation. Whether speaking, writing, or praying with someone one on one, she consistently points women back to the life changing truth of God’s Word. Book Spotlight: Cherrilynn Brisbano is the author of several fiction and nonfiction works that weave together biblical truth, spiritual growth, and engaging storytelling. Her nonfiction writing focuses on helping believers renew their minds, overcome negative thinking, and cultivate a deeper prayer life grounded in Scripture. Her fiction reflects her heart for faith based storytelling that highlights redemption, perseverance, and God’s faithfulness in real world struggles. Through her books, readers will find: Practical tools for Scripture memorization and spiritual discipline Encouragement for overcoming past wounds and distorted identity Biblically grounded guidance for strengthening prayer life Stories that reflect hope, faith, and Christ centered living You can learn more about her books and ministry at https://cbisbano.com Connect with Cherrilynn: Website: https://cbisbano.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cherrilynnbisbano Instagram: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cherrilynn-bisbano-569b8838/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@cherrilynnbisbano Closing Thought: God’s Word is not distant or outdated. It is living and active, able to perform heart surgery when we least expect it. When we choose to see ourselves as God sees us and allow His Spirit to transform our thinking, even our hardest seasons can become places where we shine for His glory.

Episode 98 - Carried Through Cancer: Finding Joy, Faith, and God’s Nearness in the Hard with Kim Harms
Date: February 10, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Kim Harms Story Highlights: In this deeply moving episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek sits down with author and two time breast cancer survivor Kim Harms for an honest conversation about faith, suffering, and the quiet strength required to keep going when life feels unbearable. Kim shares her personal journey of being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40, followed by a second diagnosis seven years later, despite being considered low risk and faithfully following long term treatment. She walks listeners through the physical and emotional realities of mastectomies, reconstruction, chemotherapy, radiation, and ongoing infusions, offering a candid look at both the hardship and the grace she experienced along the way. During her second battle with cancer, Kim and her family faced another devastating trial when her 20 year old son became critically ill. After months of unanswered questions and decline, he was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Kim reflects on how motherhood reshaped her focus during this season, to the point that she once forgot she had chemotherapy scheduled the following day because her heart and attention were entirely on her son. It was a year that stretched her faith in ways she never expected. Throughout the conversation, Kim shares how God met her in suffering not by quickly removing it, but by faithfully walking with her through it. She talks about choosing daily gratitude, journaling prayers of both lament and thanksgiving, and learning to live fully in the present instead of wishing the hard season away. Scripture, particularly the Psalms of Lament, became a lifeline for Kim, giving her language for pain, trust, and hope all at once. Kim also shares powerful stories of God’s provision through friendships formed during cancer that became unexpected lifelines. She explains how God used her writing to bring healing to others even while she herself was still healing. Out of these experiences came her book Carried Through Cancer, a 70 day devotional filled with stories from cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers that highlight how God meets His people in the hardest moments. After more than a decade walking through cancer, Kim reflects on how her faith has deepened and her voice has grown bolder. She speaks openly about stacking memories of God’s faithfulness, trusting Jesus with her life, and embracing her calling to share hope with others. This episode is a powerful reminder that even in fear, frailty, and suffering, God is near and as long as we have breath, we still have an assignment. Key Takeaways: • God is near in suffering. Kim’s story reminds us that God does not abandon us in hard seasons. He meets us in them and walks closely with us through fear, uncertainty, and pain. • Joy can exist alongside grief. Joy is not the absence of hardship but the presence of Jesus. Even in ongoing trials, we can choose gratitude and experience moments of joy. • Lament is part of faith, not a lack of it. The Psalms of Lament gave Kim language to cry out honestly to God while still choosing trust. • Hard seasons change us, but they do not disqualify us. Cancer reshaped Kim’s life, but it also deepened her faith, clarified her calling, and strengthened her voice. • God uses our stories to bring hope to others. Through writing and sharing the stories of fellow cancer fighters and survivors, Kim discovered that God can bring purpose through pain. • As long as we have breath, we have an assignment. God is still at work, even when life feels uncertain or broken. Dr. Minor shares the heart behind founding Victorious Educator Ministries, a nonprofit created to support and encourage Christian educators as they navigate their calling in classrooms, schools, and learning environments of all kinds. The conversation traces Jackie’s journey from a lifelong educator to ministry founder and author. She reflects on the years of preparation God used to lead her into writing Taking Jesus to School: The Fruit of the Spirit on Display. Debbie and Jackie discuss the realities educators face in public schools, private schools, charter schools, and homeschool settings. They talk about classroom chaos, emotional exhaustion, difficult student behavior, and the pressure teachers feel when they believe they are not equipped for the task. Jackie encourages educators to shift their focus toward what they allow into their minds and hearts, reminding listeners that spiritual nourishment, Scripture, prayer, and community are essential for sustaining faith and joy in challenging environments. Throughout the episode, Jackie explains how the fruit of the Spirit is not something educators manufacture on their own but something that flows naturally when they walk closely with the Holy Spirit. She shares how kindness, patience, gentleness, gratitude, and self control can transform interactions with students, colleagues, and parents, often leaving a lasting impact that may not be seen until years later. The episode reinforces the message that educators are never alone in their calling. God sees their faithfulness, honors their obedience, and works through ordinary moments to create eternal impact. Episode 96 - Protecting Our Children in a Digital World: Hope, Help, and Truth for Parents with Barb Winters
Date: January 19, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Barb Winters Story Highlights: In this timely and courageous episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek sits down with Barb Winters for an honest and deeply compassionate conversation about protecting children in today’s digital world. Barb shares the personal moment that changed everything for her family. When she discovered her fourteen year old son had been exposed to pornography, she was thrust into a season marked by fear, prayer, research, and hard conversations. What followed was a two year journey that opened her eyes to just how accessible pornography and online dangers have become for children and how unprepared and isolated many parents feel when they encounter these issues. Out of that painful season, Barb founded Hopeful Mom, an online platform created to support parents with both practical tools and faith based encouragement. Through Hopeful Mom, Barb equips families to respond with wisdom rather than panic and with love rather than shame. Debbie and Barb discuss what parents can do when they discover inappropriate content on a child’s device. Instead of reacting out of fear, they emphasize the importance of pausing to pray, listening carefully, and creating an environment where children feel safe enough to tell the truth. The conversation highlights why boundaries are not punishment but protection and why ongoing conversations are far more effective than one time talks. Barb also shares about her school based presentation program, where she goes directly into schools to educate students through age appropriate discussions on internet safety, pornography exposure, social media risks, grooming behaviors, and healthy relationships. Drawing from what she sees firsthand, Barb explains why proactive education is critical and how predators exploit secrecy, confusion, and silence. The episode also addresses the growing dangers of online predators, sextortion, and human trafficking. Barb explains how grooming works, why children are particularly vulnerable, and how parents can stay informed and vigilant without living in fear. Throughout the conversation, the message remains clear. Love and protection go hand in hand. God’s grace is present even in the hardest parenting moments, and families are never beyond hope. Barb reminds listeners that prayer matters, truth brings freedom, and faithful steps taken today can make a lasting difference for generations to come. About Our Guest: Barb Winters is the founder of Hopeful Mom, a certified Sexual Risk Avoidance Specialist, mental health coach, author, speaker, and Lead Facilitator at E3 Family Solutions. She equips parents, educators, and youth to navigate the challenges of raising children in a digital culture with truth, wisdom, and faith. In March 2025, she was named to a national list of 20 Inspiring Women Dedicated to Making Life Safer for Kids. Book Spotlight: Sexpectations: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Healthy Relationships by Barb Winters Today’s culture presents young people with a distorted and often damaging view of intimacy, relationships, and self worth. From social media and streaming content to pornography and hookup culture, tweens and teens are absorbing powerful messages that shape their expectations long before they have the tools to process them. In Sexpectations, Barb Winters offers parents, grandparents, educators, and youth leaders a clear and compassionate guide for addressing these challenges head on. With biblical truth and practical insight, she helps adults understand the cultural forces influencing young people and provides a framework for guiding them toward healthy, God honoring relationships. Inside the book, readers will learn how to identify cultural factors contributing to the decline of healthy relationships, examine the emotional, spiritual, and relational consequences of casual sexual attitudes, and understand four foundational attributes of healthy relationships rooted in Scripture: love, selflessness, mutuality, and communication. The book also offers biblical principles for healing from wounds caused by sexual brokenness, tools to help children restore, reconcile, and maintain healthy relationships, and practical guidance for having ongoing conversations about pornography, hookup culture, sexting, and God’s design for sex. Sexpectations equips families to move beyond fear and silence and toward truth filled conversations that bring clarity, hope, and healing. Episode 95 - Why Do We Worry? Going From Fear to Faith with Cheri Swalwell
Date: January 9, 2026 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Cheri Swalwell Story Highlights: In this powerful and hope filled episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek sits down with writer and speaker Cheri Swalwell for a deeply honest conversation about overcoming fear through faith and learning to trust God one step at a time. Cheri shares how fear first entered her life during childhood through misunderstandings surrounding her mother’s health. What began as a fear of loss quietly followed her into adulthood, shaping her thoughts, her decisions, and even her marriage. Although fear lingered for many years, Cheri reflects on how the foundation of faith her parents planted, along with her growing personal relationship with Christ, became the pathway God used to bring healing and freedom. One of the most impactful moments in this conversation centers on a seventeen year fear of winter driving that began after a traumatic experience involving a semi truck on a snowy road. That fear quietly limited Cheri’s life, affecting her travel, opportunities, and willingness to participate during winter months. After joining a new church and developing a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, Cheri asked God to reveal the lie beneath her fear. The Lord gently showed her that the semi truck she feared had actually been positioned to protect her from oncoming traffic and allow her to turn around safely. That revelation marked the beginning of her healing journey. Cheri shares how God continued this work through obedience, prayer, and intentional thought renewal. She stepped out in faith by volunteering for AWANA despite winter driving, trusting God with one small step at a time. Over time, her fear of driving lifted, followed by freedom from depression after thirty days of focused prayer, and eventually deliverance from panic attacks as she learned to take her thoughts captive according to Scripture. Throughout the episode, Cheri offers practical tools God gave her to interrupt fear and replace it with truth, including speaking the name of Jesus, inviting worship into moments of anxiety, and anchoring her mind in specific Scriptures. The conversation deepens as Cheri recounts God’s miraculous protection over her daughter during two serious car accidents in 2023, including a head on collision with a drunk driver. Rather than reigniting fear, these experiences further strengthened Cheri’s trust in God’s faithfulness and protection. Cheri also shares how praise, thanksgiving, and gratitude reshaped her spiritual life. She describes meaningful family traditions such as choosing Scripture verses to wear as reminders, keeping a blessings journal, and documenting God’s ongoing protection and provision. Together, Debbie and Cheri encourage listeners to focus on God’s promises rather than their problems, to capture fearful thoughts, and to surround themselves with faith filled community. This episode closes with encouragement to trust God’s timing, surrender fear daily, and actively remember His faithfulness through simple practices like a blessings journal or blessings jar. With prayer, honesty, and hope, this conversation reminds listeners that fear does not have the final word. Faith does. About Our Guest: Cheri Swalwell is a Christ follower, a wife, a mom, a writer, and a speaker. What began as beta reading grew into a full writing ministry, now known for her heartfelt Discerning God’s Best series. Heidi shares openly about her diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa in 2001, a degenerative eye disease that gradually reduced her vision. Instead of letting loss define her, Heidi made a deliberate, daily choice to choose joy. That decision became her life’s mantra and influences every page she writes. Through adaptive tools like large print technology and customized accessibility settings, Heidi continues to write faithfully and live fully. Her heart for serving God remains central. She encourages listeners to embrace fresh beginnings at any stage of life and to trust that it is never too late to follow God’s prompting. Through Josephina’s journey, Heidi emphasizes the transforming power of letting go of the past and accepting the freedom Christ offers. Throughout the conversation, Heidi shares why Christian fiction is such a powerful ministry tool. Much like Jan Karon’s Mitford series, Heidi’s stories reach women who may feel distant from church but still long for spiritual connection. Through flawed yet faithful characters, she offers hope, restoration, and a gentle invitation to trust God. Heidi closes the interview with heartfelt encouragement: find purpose through service, embrace the gifts God places in your hands, and remember that joy is a choice rooted in gratitude and faith, not circumstances. Date: October 7, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Pamela Long Story Highlights: In this heartfelt episode of The Women Behind the Words, Debbie Dufek sits down with Pamela Long, founder of Embracing Faith Ministries, to talk about the beauty of saying “yes” to God, even when it stretches us beyond our comfort zone. Pam shares her journey from insecurity to confident obedience, the birth of her ministry, and the lessons she’s learned about humility, leadership, and letting God lead every step. Pamela opens up about the seasons of insecurity, growth, and restoration that shaped her leadership, and the powerful ways God confirmed His calling along the way. From early church partnerships to navigating leadership transitions, she has learned to hold ministry with open hands, recognizing that everything ultimately belongs to God. Together, Debbie and Pamela explore: How God uses weakness to prepare us for leadership What it means to obey God even when it doesn’t make sense The importance of structure, humility, and prayer in ministry How to let go and trust God through seasons of change Why rest and restoration are essential for those who serve Pam’s story is a reminder that God equips those He calls, and that when we say yes to Him, He does more through us than we could ever imagine on our own. About Our Guest: Pamela Long was saved at the young age of five years old, but didn’t start to understand God’s love, the Holy Spirit’s leading, and His word until 2003, when she found herself with a giant hole in her life that nothing was able to fill. This trial drew her back to the church and into a closer encounter with Jesus. Pam’s journey of learning God’s love has been filled with trials, lessons, growth, and healing, and she wouldn’t trade it for the world. Pamela is the proud mother of Lucas Long and wife to Richard Long III, and her heart is filled with the joy of making her family a priority. A mother, wife, sister, friend, prayer warrior, speaker, and founder of Embracing Faith Ministries, Pamela is focused on empowering, equipping, and encouraging women to walk in the callings that God has placed on their lives, as well as encouraging them to fully dive in with God to find their true identities in Jesus. About Embracing Faith Ministries: Embracing Faith Ministries exists to strengthen women in their walk with God through teaching, conferences, and community. Founded by Pamela Long in 2009, the ministry focuses on equipping women to embrace faith over fear and to step boldly into their God-given assignments. Pam’s heart is to see women restored, confident, and rooted in the truth that God’s call never depends on perfection, only on obedience. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30 Key Takeaways: God’s call to leadership often begins in our weakness. True success in ministry comes from obedience, not outcomes. Every transition, even the painful ones, can become a doorway to deeper faith. Proper structure, humility, and prayerful leadership protect both people and vision. Our ministry should always point back to the One who owns it: God Himself. Date: September 25, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Sasha Razen Story Highlights: In this heartfelt and unscripted episode of The Women Behind the Words, host Debbie Dufek welcomes her granddaughter, Sasha Razen, for a tender grandmother and granddaughter conversation about faith, identity, and the power of speaking life. Debbie opens with a brief apology for a two week break and then invites listeners into a real time story that many families will recognize. Sasha shares how words spoken over her during a painful breakup left her feeling not enough in her faith. She explains how easily criticism can masquerade as spiritual concern and why our words shape how loved ones see themselves. From there, Debbie and Sasha talk openly to moms, daughters, and sisters about apologizing quickly, approaching hard moments with love, and creating safe spaces where young hearts can talk without fear of judgment. Sasha then recounts a turning point at a young adult retreat. Feeling hesitant and alone, she sensed God whisper you are enough and learned that He meets us exactly where we are. Returning home, she realized that faith must be personal and daily, not dependent on other people or perfect circumstances. She offers practical encouragement to set aside time with God and to seek fellowship that strengthens rather than replaces a personal walk with Jesus. Listeners will also hear how God rekindled Sasha’s purpose through dance. After a lifelong family friend reached out, Sasha stepped into a worship dance class and felt a weight lift the moment she walked in. The joy of worship and movement returned as if she had never stopped, reminding her that God delights to guide our steps and restore passion. Throughout the conversation, Debbie and Sasha speak directly to mothers of teens and to teen girls themselves. The message is simple and strong. Speak life. Apologize quickly. Come to Jesus as you are. You are never too far to come back. About Our Guest: Sasha Razen is eighteen and currently lives in New York with her Aunt Glory while her mom and sisters live in Texas. She is close with her big extended family and loves pouring into the younger kids in her world, especially her cousins and little sisters. Sasha is passionate about kindness, being a safe place for middle school girls, and speaking life into others. After attending a young adult retreat that changed her perspective, she began rebuilding daily rhythms of time with God. A lifelong lover of movement, Sasha recently returned to dance through a worship class and is excited to follow where God leads next. Takeaway for Moms and Daughters: This conversation is full of practical wisdom you can carry into your own family life: For Moms. Speak one life giving word over your daughter this week and follow it with a prayer together. For Daughters. Write down a truth you’ve learned about being enough in God’s eyes and keep it where you’ll see it daily. For Sisters & Friends. Apologize quickly when words sting and remind each other of the love that holds stronger than mistakes. For Mentors. Be intentional. Invite a younger girl for coffee or a walk and ask how you can encourage her faith today. Closing Thought: You do not have to get cleaned up to come to God. He meets you where you are and calls you enough because He is enough. Mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, let your words carry life. Apologize fast, love deeply, and keep coming back to Jesus together.

Episode 84 - Boundaries: Loving Others Without Losing Yourself with Dana Morehouse
Date: August 15, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Deb Dufek and her daughter, Dana Morehouse Story Highlights: In this heartfelt episode of The Women Behind the Words, host Debbie Dufek sits down with her first-born daughter, Dana Morehouse, for a candid conversation about a topic that affects every part of our lives, boundaries. Do you set them? Do you keep them? And if not, why? Deb and Dana share a real-life moment that unfolded in the middle of Target when a last-minute family birthday party crisis hit. One daughter was exhausted with a house full of sick children and feeling overwhelmed by the promise to host that night. Dana, already fresh off a month of non-stop hosting her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren visiting from Switzerland, plus daily visits from her other children and grandchildren, was physically and emotionally drained. On top of that, she was still recovering from skin cancer surgery. When the request came for her to host, Dana took a quiet but firm “pause” to honor her limits. Here’s the twist, after processing, she still said yes. But this time, it wasn’t at the expense of her health or her boundaries. The family rallied together, each person pitching in with food, setup, and cleanup so no one carried the burden alone. It became a powerful example of how protecting your well-being can still leave room for generosity, joy, and connection. Together, Deb and Dana dive deep into the freedom that comes from knowing your capacity, setting healthy limits without guilt, and refusing to be swayed by the pressure of others’ expectations. They share how releasing the need for everyone to operate in the same gifting allows for more grace, understanding, and peace within relationships. Listeners will walk away with practical, faith-filled tools to protect their well-being, love others wholeheartedly, and live from a place of balance and joy. About Our Guest: Dana Morehouse has been married to her husband, Bill, for 39 years. They have 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and one more on the way, 5 boys and 3 girls. Dana homeschooled her children through 8th grade for 25 years, building a family culture rooted in faith and connection. She loves the thrill of a great garage sale find, eagerly anticipates football season, and treasures every moment with her growing family. Following our recent conversation with my granddaughter, Shayna Morehouse—a dedicated homeschooling mama—I couldn’t be more thrilled to continue our focus on homeschooling during these summer months, a prime season for planning and inspiration. As a homeschooling veteran myself, I’m especially excited to introduce Katie and the incredible work she’s doing to serve homeschooling families through a Christ-centered classical model. Katelyn shares the heart and vision behind Creo Classical Academy, a nonprofit hybrid program she helped establish in New York’s Capital District. Episode 76 - Embracing Our Seasoned Years with Joy
Date: June 6, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Jarm Del Boccio Episode Highlights: Welcome back to The Women Behind the Words! In today’s episode, we’re honored to sit down with author Jarm Del Boccio, who at 69 years old is embracing her silver years with joy, passion, and deep purpose. Jarm opens her heart and life story to encourage other women to view aging not as a decline but as an invitation to flourish and make a lasting Kingdom impact. Jarm shares how the sudden loss of her beloved father at the age of four shaped much of her early life. Raised by a strong-willed, practical mother, she often felt misunderstood—but through her mother’s love of travel and missions, Jarm developed a heart for the world and a curiosity about God’s greater plan for her life. As a deeply sensitive and shy child, she struggled with criticism until a transformative season during her teenage years, when the warmth of her best friend’s family helped her bloom. That experience gave her the glimpse of unconditional love she had longed for. Through her young adult years, Jarm wrestled with heartbreak and a longing for connection—especially the kind of love she once had with her father. Those seasons of loss drew her closer to her Heavenly Father, where she found true comfort and security. Marriage came later in life, bringing unexpected trials—most notably, infertility. After multiple attempts to conceive, Jarm faced the painful realization that God had closed her womb. But once again, she leaned into Him, found purpose in ministering to others, and ultimately embraced adoption and homeschooling. Though naturally drawn to solitude as an only child, the homeschooling years taught her the beauty of self-sacrifice and the joy found in unexpected places. Jarm also speaks about her lifelong love for travel, ignited in childhood and carried with her even now, despite living with osteoarthritis. Though her mobility is limited, her desire to explore and her trust in God’s unfolding plan remain as strong as ever. In the final portion of our conversation, Jarm introduces her upcoming book, Fragrant and Flourishing: Living Abundantly in Our Seasoned Years—a heartfelt guide for women navigating the fears and questions that come with aging. She beautifully reminds us that women like Sarah, Elizabeth, and Anna in Scripture did some of their most impactful work later in life—and that we, too, are called to continue growing, giving, and glorifying God, no matter our age. Jarm’s story is a testament to God’s faithfulness through every trial—from childhood grief to infertility, from physical limitations to letting go of deeply held dreams. Her life overflows with wisdom, grace, and the sweet reminder that we never age out of God's purpose. Thank you, Jarm, for your openness and encouragement. You are a radiant example of what it looks like to age with joy, trust, and unshakable faith. About the Guest: At 71, I feel like a 20-something when someone compliments my stunning silver hair—and I always tell them it’s God’s gift to me (along with my faithful hairdresser of 30 years!). But on a deeper level, I’ve observed a hesitancy among women to leave behind the familiar comforts of the past and step into the unknowns of a new season—one that might actually bring more joy, clarity, and spiritual vibrancy than we ever imagined. The very things we fear could be the catalysts that help us age with boldness, purpose, and grace. As a former educator and passionate advocate for women, I feel deeply called to help older women use their seasoned years for God’s glory—living joyfully and fully, right where He has them. Book Spotlight: The Heart Changer By Jarm Del Boccio Can an Israelite captive, wrenched from all she loves, serve the very man who destroyed her village? Miriam is asked to do the unthinkable: serve the wife of Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army. Clinging to treasured memories of home and the roots of her faith, she enters captivity filled with worry and bitterness. But God—the true Heart Changer—is already at work, preparing her for something greater than she could ever imagine. This powerful middle-grade historical novel offers a tender and truthful portrayal of a young refugee navigating loss, identity, and the redemptive hand of God in a foreign land. Though she had a strong relationship with the Lord, Kristy battled shame and secret struggles with binge eating, often hiding her pain behind a smile. It wasn’t until she cried out to God for help that He gave her one life-changing word: boundaries. After trying every diet with no lasting results, Kristy realized she needed something more sustainable—something rooted in truth. Through surrendering her food choices to the Lord and following a plan of three measured meals a day, Kristy lost over 100 pounds and has maintained that weight loss for more than six years. But more importantly, she found true freedom—freedom from shame, secrecy, and the constant mental battle with food. Kristy explains how the world often tells us to satisfy every craving, but the Word of God teaches us to renew our minds and align our lives with His truth. For her, this meant creating beautiful guardrails—firm but life-giving boundaries with food, especially sugar and processed carbs. Though it required grieving the loss of certain habits and comforts, she gained something far more valuable: a deeper dependence on Jesus and a life she no longer wanted to numb. Today, Kristy is a voice of hope to hundreds of thousands of women through her ministry, Life Unbinged. With over 700,000 social media followers and a thriving online community, she shares practical steps, daily encouragement, and biblical truth to help others break free from food struggles and emotional eating. She leaves listeners with three powerful takeaways: Let go of sugar and processed flour. Journal what you eat. Study what God says about your identity. Food freedom, Kristy says, isn’t about restriction—it’s about liberation. It’s about choosing what nourishes you physically, emotionally, and spiritually while letting go of what leads you back into bondage. About the Guest: Kristy McCammon is a Christian wife, mother of five, speaker, coach, and founder of Life Unbinged. After losing 100 pounds in 2017 by surrendering her food addiction to the Lord and creating healthy, sustainable habits, Kristy has dedicated her life to helping others experience the same transformation. With a passionate and relatable voice, she shares tools and strategies to help women ditch dieting and walk in true freedom. Episode 65 - Life Lessons Learned By Being a Party of One with Clarice James
Date: February 28, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Clarice James Episode Highlights: Welcome to The Women Behind the Words! In this heartfelt episode, I sit down with my friend Clarice James, a talented fiction novelist with a passion for storytelling that has spanned over 18 years. Even as a child, Clarice loved weaving narratives, and that passion has only deepened with time. She writes what she knows, infusing her own life experiences into her characters—so much so that friends have occasionally recognized themselves in her books! One of her most personal novels, Party of One, was inspired by her journey through grief and widowhood. After losing her first husband, Clarice faced the often-overlooked challenge of dining alone. One evening, while attempting to eat at a restaurant by herself, she was met with unexpected insensitivity from the waitstaff. That moment opened her eyes to the loneliness many people experience. Instead of retreating, she turned that moment into an opportunity, starting a supper club where singles and widows could gather for community and conversation. If she saw someone sitting alone, she invited them to join her, transforming an isolating experience into a beautiful sense of belonging. Clarice has since authored five novels, is currently working on her sixth, and declares that writing is simply what she was made to do. In this episode, we discuss the importance of recognizing those who may feel unseen and taking simple steps to bring people together. Whether you're a writer, a widow, or someone seeking to foster deeper connections in your own life, Clarice’s journey is sure to inspire you. About Clarice James: Clarice G. James is an award-winning author known for her smart, fun, and relatable contemporary women’s fiction. Her stories are infused with humor, faith, romance, and unexpected twists that keep readers engaged. Her first published novel, Doubleheader, was one of the winners of the 2014 Jerry Jenkins Operation First Novel Contest. She has since published Party of One, Manhattan Grace, The Girl He Knew, and The Least of These, with her latest work-in-progress, Out of Hunger, currently underway. In addition to fiction, Clarice is the author of Say Grace: A Scriptural Field Guide to Weight Loss and is currently working on a second non-fiction project, Say Grace: Grieving the Death of a Spouse. When her first husband, Terry, passed away in 1998, Clarice turned to writing as a means of healing. In 2006, she remarried, finding love again with David—whom she describes as "a keeper, and all grown up when I got him." Sadly, she was widowed again in 2021, just shy of fifteen years of marriage. When she’s not writing, Clarice enjoys reading, leading women’s Bible studies, and taking on home decorating projects. She resides in southern New Hampshire, surrounded by close family and friends. Book Highlight: Party of One Widow Annie McGee is ready to move forward, but as she steps into a new chapter, she encounters the unexpected challenge of loneliness. Determined to break through her grief, she finds Party of One—a communal table for single diners at a local restaurant. Initially, Annie has no intention of getting deeply involved with the lives of those who join her. She’s content to observe from a safe distance. But as the weeks go by, she realizes that the only thing more surprising than the quirks of her eclectic tablemates is how much she starts to need their company. As friendships blossom and truths unfold, Annie learns that God has more in store for her than she ever imagined. Party of One is a heartwarming story of second chances, unexpected friendships, and the beauty of community. Episode 64 - Embracing New Seasons with Sanda Flach
Date: February 21, 2025 Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Sandra Flach Episode Highlights: Welcome to The Women Behind the Words! In this inspiring episode, I sit down with my dear friend Sandra Flach as she shares the remarkable journey of stepping into a new season. For over a decade, Sandra has poured her heart into Justice for Orphans, an organization she co-founded to raise awareness in churches and provide support to foster and adoptive families. What began as a small ministry has flourished into a life-changing organization serving over 11,000 children and families. Despite the incredible impact of Justice for Orphans, Sandra found herself in a position that, while vital, wasn’t her true calling. As the Executive Director, her responsibilities revolved around management, administration, and daily operations—tasks that pulled her away from her deepest passion: ministering directly to families, writing, and speaking. Throughout this season, Sandra persistently sought the Lord, praying for the right person to step into leadership so she could fully embrace the calling God placed on her heart. Unbeknownst to her, Kathi, her trusted assistant director, had also been hearing from God—sensing a call to step into the very role Sandra had been praying to fill. During a pivotal meeting, Sandra once again expressed her desire for a leader to take over Justice for Orphans. That’s when Kathi revealed what God had placed on her heart. In January of this year, the transition began, and Sandra stepped into a new chapter—fully dedicating herself to writing, speaking, and ministering to foster and adoptive parents through her online community. Sandra’s story is a beautiful reminder of God’s perfect timing and faithfulness. She encourages anyone sensing a shift in their calling to trust the process, knowing that when God opens a door, He also equips us for what’s ahead. Proverbs 3:5-6 (TPT) reminds us: "Trust in the Lord completely and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart, rely on him to guide you, and he will lead you in every decision you make." If you’re feeling called to step into a new season, this episode will encourage and inspire you to trust God, embrace change, and walk confidently in His plan. About Sandra Flach: Sandra Flach is a mother of eight, including five adopted children, two of whom have been diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). She is a passionate advocate for foster and adoptive families, equipping parents with resources and encouragement through her weekly Adoption & Foster Care Journey Podcast and her blog at SandraFlach.com. Episode 61 - A Peek into the Heart and Passions of Lizzy Adams
Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Lizzy Adams Date: January 28, 2025 Welcome to The Women Behind the Words! I’m thrilled to welcome my dear friend of nearly 30 years, Lizzy Adams, to the podcast. Lizzy is a woman whose life radiates faith, wisdom, and a deep love for her family. Her journey as a homeschooling mother of seven, her passion for classical Christian education, and her heart for mentoring younger women make this conversation truly special. About Our Guest (Bio): Lizzy Adams has been married to her husband, Bill, for 44 years, and together, they have been blessed with seven children, five beloved in-law children, and 17 grandchildren who bring them endless joy. Bill, a former Army officer, now works with Bridges for Peace, serves as a chaplain at Christian Care Ministry, and teaches at Grand Canyon University. Their love for Israel has led them to lead multiple tours to the Holy Land, deepening their faith and connection to its people. For 36 years, Lizzy homeschooled their children, later transitioning into teaching in a classical Christian school setting, where she remains today. She currently teaches junior high literature and writing at Pietas Classical Christian, a hybrid classical Christian program in Florida. Over the years, Lizzy has also led Bible studies, taught at retreats and conferences, and mentored countless women in their walk with Jesus. Episode Highlights: Discovering Classical Christian Education Lizzy shares how her family transitioned from traditional homeschooling to classical Christian education—a method that deeply resonated with their values. She explains how this faith-filled approach nurtures not only the mind but also the heart, emphasizing truth, beauty, and goodness. The Joy of Teaching and Mentoring With decades of experience teaching both in the home and cooperative settings, Lizzy beautifully describes classical education as a mentor-student relationship—one that "cultivates wonder in our children, learning from a place of rest." Encouragement for Homeschooling Mothers For mothers considering classical Christian education, Lizzy offers heartfelt encouragement: begin with prayer. She highlights the benefits of hybrid classical Christian schools, like the one her daughter-in-law started—Creo Classical Academy in Ballston Spa, NY—where students receive structured learning while still benefiting from home education. Cultivating a Quiet Heart Lizzy opens up about how the Lord has transformed her heart in this season of life. She shares the beauty of joy, rest, and trust in God's sovereignty, reminding us that no circumstance is beyond His care. Her advice? "Rest your head on the pillow of God’s sovereignty"—knowing that He is never surprised by our circumstances. Finding Joy in Every Season Now in a new stage of life, Lizzy reflects on the unique sweetness of her empty nest. While raising children was a beautiful season, she now treasures the quiet companionship with her husband, seeing this time as a gift rather than a loss. A Closing Word on Beauty and Hope Lizzy shares one of her favorite Tolkien quotes, a beautiful reminder of the hope we have even in difficult times: "The world is full of peril and in it there are many dark places, but still there is much that is fair; and in all lands, love mingled with grief grows perhaps the greater." Key Takeaways for Listeners Explore classical Christian education as a way to nurture your children’s hearts and minds. Begin every decision with prayer, seeking God’s guidance in homeschooling or any educational choices. Cultivate a quiet heart by learning to trust God’s sovereignty in all things. Find joy in each season, knowing that God’s love is steadfast, and His plans are perfect. Lizzy’s wisdom, deep faith, and warm presence will encourage and inspire you to seek Jesus more fully, whether you're navigating homeschooling, transitioning into a new season of life, or simply longing for a heart at rest in God’s peace. In this heartfelt episode, our guest, Kathy Hendley, shares her inspiring journey of faith, resilience, and creativity. Recently, Kathy had the unforgettable experience of meeting Priscilla Shirer during her visit to Cincinnati. As a member of Priscilla’s street team, Kathy spent months praying for the event. Meeting Priscilla backstage left a lasting impact—Kathy describes her as the same person offstage as on, full of warmth, gratitude, and the love of Jesus. Kathy’s passion for encouraging writers shines through her programs like the Write on Purpose Virtual Writing Retreat and the November Challenge Writing Contest. These initiatives provide tools and inspiration for writers to step into their calling and share the messages God has placed on their hearts. Her personal writing journey is deeply tied to her experiences of pain and healing. Initially writing short stories about people navigating loss, Kathy eventually crafted a novel about a young teacher enduring immense challenges. Fiction became a refuge, helping her process trauma that felt overwhelming in memoir form. As a foster and adoptive mother to two children, including a daughter with a mental illness, writing became a therapeutic outlet. Kathy's faith has been her anchor through difficult seasons, especially the struggles related to her daughter’s mental health. Even during moments involving police intervention, God’s grace protected and reunited their family. Her resilience was further tested by the loss of her father, who battled liver cancer. Completing her novel shortly before his passing in April gave her strength and reminded her of God’s faithfulness. Her father’s unwavering support—both emotional and financial—fueled Kathy’s writing career. He funded her book and writing business and encouraged her to attend the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA), where she found invaluable connections. A transformative workshop, "My Business Meeting with God," helped Kathy realign her work with her faith and purpose. This episode is a powerful reminder that through storytelling, faith, and determination, hope and healing are possible even in the most challenging circumstances. Kathy’s journey will inspire you to step boldly into your calling and trust God’s plans. About the Guest (Bio): Dr. Kathy Hendley is a teacher, author, speaker, and member of Word Weavers International and AWSA.
