Finish Line Moments: From Start Line Hype to Lifelong Grit: The Angela Warren Story
There’s a special kind of electricity at the start line of a race. You feel it in the shuffle of shoes, the nervous laughter, the deep breaths before the horn blows. At countless races across the country, that energy also has a voice — and chances are, it’s Angela Warren’s.Angela is the emcee who has fired up thousands of runners, from wide-eyed first-timers to world-class elites. But before she ever held a microphone, she was chasing her own finish lines — as a three-time NCAA All-American, a national champion from South Africa, a steeplechaser who came within 10 seconds of the Olympics, and later as an Ironman and ultrarunner. Her journey is not just about competition; it’s about grit, family, balance, and the stories we tell ourselves when the road gets hard.In this high-energy, deeply personal conversation, Angela opens up about the roots of her resilience, the lessons she’s learned in chasing dreams, and why running will always be more than a sport. She shares how growing up in Swaziland shaped her, why she believes running is “a mirror” for how we handle life’s setbacks, and how she sees every finish line as a chance to celebrate human spirit, no matter the pace.Angela has a phrase she returns to again and again: consistency is key. It’s not about being perfect every day, it’s about stacking small wins, showing up even when you don’t feel like it, and trusting that every deposit in the training “bank” will be there when you need it. That mindset drives the question she still asks herself: How do I maximize my potential? Not in a way that burns her out, but in a way that draws out more strength, more joy, more growth than she thought possible.Because runners, as she says, are addicted to that sense of improvement. It’s what keeps us lacing up, the belief that there’s always another layer to uncover. Sometimes that improvement is a faster split, sometimes it’s simply bouncing back after a tough run. Either way, it’s progress, and it’s worth celebrating.Angela also offers a powerful piece of advice to anyone out there grinding through miles: dedicate each mile to a different person. It’s a simple shift, but it changes everything. Suddenly, you’re not just running for yourself - you’re running with gratitude, with intention, with connection. And when you hit those tough moments - because every runner will - you can lean on that dedication to carry you forward.

Finish Line Moments: Purpose, Passion & Finish Lines with John Smith – CEO of Groundwork Endurance
On the June 10 episode of Finish Line Moments, we sit down with John Smith, CEO of Groundwork Endurance, architect of some of the most iconic events in running, and a leader whose purpose has always been bigger than the finish line.John’s journey started far from San Diego finish lines. He grew up in Florida, stepped out of school without much of a purpose, and went corporate at IBM wearing a three-piece suit in 98-degree heat. It took a friend, a few triathlons, and a chance encounter with a scrappy magazine called Competitor to reroute his life. What started as selling ads grew into Competitor Group, and eventually into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, a movement that transformed racing into a celebration of fun, music, inclusivity, and cause.Under John’s leadership, Rock ‘n’ Roll went from seven events to more than twenty, shifted running from 60% male to majority female participation, and welcomed a new era of “Run Happy” alongside Brooks. For John, it was never just about time, it was about joy, connection, and purpose. As he often says, “I feel like I’ve never worked a day in my life, because I chose something that drives me.” His belief? Getting people across the finish line saves lives. That mindset carried into Groundwork Endurance. From preserving the legacy of the Carlsbad 5000 to creating new formats like Every Woman’s Marathon, John continues to innovate with events that do well and do good. Every race he’s led has raised awareness or millions of dollars for causes from local Boys & Girls Clubs to St. Jude. Even during the pandemic, when gyms closed and races went virtual, John and his team raised $1M for St. Jude through digital runs.Leadership is core to John’s story. He’s not a “boss”, he’s a teammate. He once literally took the door off his office so colleagues knew they could walk in anytime, ask anything, and be heard. It’s why staff would run through a brick wall for him because he’d run right alongside them. Now, his son Griff is carrying that ethos forward as event director at Groundwork, bringing a new level of relevance through run clubs and grassroots energy.Looking ahead, John’s vision is bold: a “weeklong celebration of the sport of running” in San Antonio that combines business-to-business, consumer, and cultural experiences from races to expos to music culminating in the San Antonio 5k and Half Marathon. Every Woman’s Marathon is also breaking ground, with thoughtful touches designed for women and first-time runners: Saucony partnerships, world-class captains like Des Linden and Kathrine Switzer, yoga and recovery stations, even hair braiding and massages at the finish line — all wrapped in a Boston-qualifying event. It’s a race designed to welcome, celebrate, and empower.Through it all, John’s high energy, high integrity, and deep sense of purpose shine. His heroes include Steve Prefontaine, his business partners include legends like Meb Keflezighi, but his true inspiration comes from the stories of everyday runners crossing finish lines. This is a fast-paced, inspiring conversation about passion, innovation, and legacy in running — and a reminder that the finish line belongs to everyone.
