It All Comes Back to Superman
by Michael Bailey
Michael Bailey likes Superman. A lot. So much so that From Crisis to Crisis, the other Superman show he co-hosts with his friend, was not enough to contain his fandom for the Man of Steel. This erratic reaffirmation of Michael's Kryptonian faith covers everything about Superman that Michael loves about the character. Comics. Animation. Live action. Prose. Everything is on the table because no matter what it all comes back to Superman.

Superman Day 2026 Special - Superman on the Ones!
Another year, another Superman Day, another Superman Day Special! This year I decided to finally pull the trigger on an idea I've had for some time now and even planned to do last year but since I tend to be a work sky fop I never got around to it. It happens. A lot. I'm working on it. Anyway, Superman has had a number of series over the years. Because of that he has had a lot of number one issues. I thought it would be fun to look through the ones for his various ongoing series and talk about them a bit and here we are. I start all the way back with Action Comics #1 from 1938 and continue to Superman #1 from 1939, Superman #1 from 1986, Superman: The Man of Steel #1 from 1991, Superman: The Man of Tomorrow #1 from 1995, Superman: Confidential #1 from 2006, Action Comics #1 from 2011, Superman #1 from 2011, Superman #1 from 2016, Superman #1 from 2018, Superman #1 from 2023, and Superman Unlimited #1 from 2025. I have never typed "Superman #1" so many times in a row in my entire life. Over the course of an hour and forty-eight minutes I talk about why editor Vin Sullivan chose Superman for the first issue of Action Comics, why the first Superman #1 was historic, how my feelings on the 1986 issue one have changed over the years, why Superman: The Man of Steel #1 is so special to me, why I was so excited for Superman: Confidential when it came out, some thoughts on Superman in the new 52, why Superman Unlimited #1 was the perfect book for a new Superman fan, and more! I hope everyone has a great Superman Day. See you in June for the other Superman Day. Well, I'll see you before that but still. Feedback for the show can be sent to [email protected]. You can subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Audible. This show is part of The Fortress of Baileytude Podcasting Network, which is on Patreon. This is a tip jar as I have no time for extra content at the moment, but if you like content I produce please consider contributing a dollar a month if you can. The opening and closing theme is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. Next time: The final chapter of Moving Kryptonian Images! Not only do I go over all of the feedback I've gotten during this series, but I also rank the various Superman films!

Episode 41 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 24 - Superman (2025)
Moving Kryptonian Images reaches its penultimate chapter...finally. Yes. I know. It's been a minute. I feel a bit bad about that, but life got weird towards the end of last year. Anyway, I finally get to the film that inspired this series in the first place. Superman, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, came out last July and, by just about every metric, was a success. In terms of meeting box office expectations (despite what some people have tried to say) to bringing in new Superman fans to giving the world a Superman film that appeals to the widest possible audience, this new version of the Man of Steel did everything it needed to do and there is a lot to say about it. Joining me to do that is Michael French, one of the founders of Retroblasting, the premier video channel specializing in humorous analysis and deconstruction of 1980s vintage toys and classic cartoons. Michael and I cover this film from stem to stern. From how the movie dealt with Superman to the lack of Clark Kent to why this was one of the best Lois Lanes we have ever gotten to the pros and cons of this version of Lex Luthor. We also go into how the Kents were portrayed, the role the other heroes played in the film, why Jimmy's hijinks took us out of the film occasionally, the costume, the comic book influences, and the one real issue I had with Krypto. And yes, we do go into the "controversy" about Jor-El and Lara. Because we had to. The Internet wouldn't allow us to do otherwise. I'd like to thank Michael for joining me for this episode. If you haven't already, check out his YouTube channel Retroblasting, which has some of the most fun and objective looks at classic lines you will find on the Internet. Episode 40 - A Conversation With Mark Waid
This time out I finish my look at Superman: Birthright by having a conversation with the man who wrote it! That's right, I got the chance to sit down (so to speak) with Mark to talk about Birthright. We talked about other things as well, but most of the conversation was about that series. We go over why DC wanted a new origin in 2003, why Mark kept the Kents alive despite his personal feelings on their deaths in previous versions of the origin, why Clark and Lex were friends during their time in Smallville, the "controversy" over making Clark a vegetarian, his take on Lois Lane, and what it was like seeing parts of this series end up in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. You'll also get to hear the sad story of what happened to his first comic book collection, which of his stories he might want to see adapted into audio form, and which friend, Jimmy Olsen or Pete Ross, is the better friend to Clark. I'd once again like to thank Mark for agreeing to be on the show and being so generous with his time. Feedback for the show can be sent to [email protected]. You can subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Audible. This show is part of The Fortress of Baileytude Podcasting Network, which is on Patreon. The opening and closing theme is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. Next time: If I can find the time this week I might have a fun episode dropping this weekend. If not, you'll hear the penultimate installment of Moving Kryptonian Images!

Episode 39 - Many Lives, Many Origins Installment 2 - Superman: Birthright Part 2
Many Lives, Many Origins, the series exploring the various versions of Superman's origin that I'll be doing off and on throughout 2026, continues with the second part of my look at Superman: Birthright. Which, as I said during the last episode, is my favorite version of Superman's origin. Full stop. After a bit of housecleaning where I talk about the promo poster that was released to promote this series (which I really should have done last time but didn't) I get into issues six through twelve of the series. I talk about a scene involving a school shooting which I am surprised hasn't gotten more traction on social media, the pitfalls of Clark's secret identity, the origin of this version of Lex Luthor, Lex's plan to turn the world against the Man of Steel, a "Kryptonian" invasion, and the final battle in Metropolis. I also go into why I prefer to version of the origin over the 2013 film Man of Steel. Along the way I get into Lex's Silver Age origin, the fact that the Kryptonian writing no longer translate to literal gibberish, some of the fun Easter eggs Waid threw into the story, the covers, and why I used to be completely wrong about Leinil Francis Yu's art. Shows promoted during this episode. Episode 38 - Many Lives, Many Origins Installment 1 - Superman: Birthright Part 1
This time out I'm starting a new series that will run irregularly through 2026 called Many Lives, Many Origins. Superman has one of the best origins in comics. It's up there with Batman and Spider-Man as having a backstory that is timeless and just about perfect. Rocketed as a baby when his home world exploded, found by a kindly couple and raised as their son, Superman discovered that he possessed powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men and decided to use those powers to help mankind. Those basic elements have been part of Superman's backstory since his first appearance in Action Comics #1. While those elements and that basic overview have been a constant in Superman's life, the particulars of those elements have changed. Evolved in some cases, regressed in others. The names of his birth parents have undergone small changes. The names of the kindly couple that found him have changed. Is Krypton a pulp, science fiction wonderland full of rhondors and jewel mountains or is it a cold, sterile place that "deserved to be blown up"? Was Superman ever Superboy? Did he have his powers as a baby, or did they take years to develop? The differences are what I find fascinating, and I thought it would be fun to look at those origins, whether it's in comics, in live action, in animation, in audio, or prose, and a do a deep dive into them. To kick things off, I decided to look at Superman: Birthright. Published from July 2003 to July 2004 and written by Mark Waid with art by Leinil Francis Yu, this 12 issue maxi-series was supposed to be a new origin for a new age. I wasn't the biggest fan of this series when it first came out, but over the years I've softened on it and this most recent re-read really opened my eyes to how good this retelling of Superman's origin was, so I thought it would be a good way to kick this series off. In this first part of a two part look at the series I go over what was going on with Superman in the comics when the series was published, Waid and Yu's take on Krypton, the idea of Superman being a lonely character, how this version balances that loneliness with Clark's desire to help people, Jonathan and Martha Kent, the new take on Lois, Superman's grand reveal, his first confrontation with Lex in costume, and more. Or, more succinctly, I talk about the first five issues of the series. Below are the covers to those issues. Next time: I finish my analysis of Superman: Birthright. Spoiler warning...I really liked it.

Episode 37 - The Battle of the Century! Superman vs The Amazing Spider-Man
Fifty years ago Marvel and DC teamed up to bring their, at the time, flagship characters together. Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man was a tabloid sized comic that saw Superman and Spider-Man not only fighting each other, but also taking on the titanic team-up of Lex Luthor and Doctor Octopus. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this book and to, down the road, ride the coat tails of the new version of Superman and Spider-Man teaming up I did a team-up of my own. Joining me to talk about this book is my good friend and co-host of The Overlooked Dark Knight, Andrew Leyland. Andy is one of the biggest Spider-Man fans I know and this seemed like it would be a fun time. And a fun time it was. Andy and I go over how this wasn't the first crossover between Marvel and DC, how the book came together, how Stan Lee is a lot wordier than Carmine Infantino, the writing, the art, the bits that eventually ended up in Superman The Movie, how Spider-Man's hero identitification was a bit lackluster, the weird way Lex and Doc Ock escape from prison, the parts they liked, the parts they didn't like, and what it's like when Spider-Man notices how hard Superman has become. (snicker) Feedback for It All Comes Back to Superman can be sent to [email protected]. You can subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Audible. The opening and closing theme is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensd from Shockwave-Sound. Next time: The start on an irregular series called Superman: Many Lives, Many Origins where I look at the various tellings and retellings of Superman's origin (it's in the name) starting with Superman: Birthright.

Episode 36 - Mike's Year In Superman (2025 Edition)
It's a new year, so I'm going to start things like I did last year...by looking back at the previous year. It's worked pretty well for the past few years and I actually put out a bunch of shows in 2025 and a certain film came out, so there's actually stuff to talk about, which, as you can imagine, makes putting out this episode a lot easier. Anyway, in this off the cuff, unscripted, and increasing congested episode I talk about watching the final few episodes of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, why I stopped watching Season 7 of Smallville, why I let new books stack up for months before reading them, why I liked the whole Superwoman storyline, the stuff I re-read for shows this year, the podcasts I guested on and more. I also take about 20 or so minutes and get real honest about what happened to me as a Superman fan towards the end of the year. I know that not everyone is into this sort of thing, so I give plenty of notice before I launch into the naval gazing, so if you want to bail before that I understand. But through this part of the episode I talk about my current thinking on how I want to approach this show and my (lack of) plans for 2026. Next Time: No clue, but it will be out in a couple of weeks. Thanks for listening. And eat your Kellog's Pep. If you still have some.

Episode 35 - The Superman Family in Crisis
Forty years ago DC Comics published Crisis on Infinite Earths. That twelve issue series (plus a handful of crossover issues) was part celebration of DC's fiftieth birthday and part house cleaning. Worlds lived, worlds died and the DC Universe was never the same. To celebrate what was, at one point, a holy text to my generation of comic book fans I thought it would be fun to look at what the Superman family was up to during the story. Joining me on this journey is three time Eisner award winning journalist (for Women Writing About Comics) Cori McCreery. Cori and I have been friends for years and I thought it was high time that I had her on the show, especially considering one of the Super Family members we discussed. See, Cori loves Supergirl and considering Crisis was a big story for the OG Kara Zor-El it seemed like "sitting down" with Cori would be a good idea. While the bulk of the episode (the back half, as a matter of fact) concerns Supergirl, we also discuss two Supermen and a Superboy. We go over my love of the Earth-2 Superman, how the Earth-1 Superman didn't play a huge part in this extremely important story, and the introduction of the Superboy of Earth-Prime, who also didn't play a huge part in this Crisis, but would go on to be part of another Crisis two decades later where things...happened. Then we go into Supergirl and why her death in this story was so important. We also go on a few tangents, which is almost required on one of my shows. Many thanks to Cori for coming out to play on this one.

Episode 34 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 23 - Superman: The Man of Tomorrow
Welcome to a "starting a new universe is what the cool kids are doing" installment of the podcasting maxiseries called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by award winning author Keith R.A. DeCandido to talk about Superman: The Man of Tomorrow from 2020. This film launched a new animated cinematic universe and did so by showing us the early days of Superman. Keith and I cover a lot of ground during our conversation including, but not limited to, the many origins of Superman we've seen since 2004, why I really don't care for Lobo, the Martian Manhunter's role in the film, Lois Lane, jerk Perry White, and even a little bit of Spider-Man right there at the end. I also share my unfiltered feelings on Max Landis's Superman: American Alien. I want to thank Keith for coming on the show. Be sure to check out his website, especially for his upcoming novel Supernatural Crimes Unit NYPD - Book 1: The Thin, Blue Ley-Line. Keith and I both have essays in Jack of All Comics!: A Fan Conversation About the King of Comics, published by Becky Books, so be sure to check that out as well. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Episode 33 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 22 - Superman: Red Son
Welcome to a "down with the bourgeoisie, up with the proletariat" installment of the podcasting maxiseries called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! Greetings, comrade, and welcome to a podcast for the common man. This time out Henry Bernstein (he of Songs of Experience: A Bob Dylan Podcast, Superman and Lois and Pals, and Funny, They Don't Look Jewish) joins me to talk about Superman: Red Son, the animated adaptation of the Elseworlds comic of the same name. Henry and I have a wild, tangent filled conversation that somehow manages to come back to the subject at hand. We talk about the movie, our feelings on the original comic series, Jason Isaacs, Bob Dylan, My Chemical Romance, period pieces, and how awesome Diedrich Bader is. Henry also asks me questions that I don't have the best answers to, and I give my answer to the question, "I've just seen the new Superman movie, what should I read?" It was a lot of fun. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 32 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 21 - Reign of the Supermen
Welcome to an "it's reigning men" filled installment of the podcasting maxiseries called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am talking about the 2020 film Reign of the Supermen, which is the adaptation of the Superman story...Reign of the Supermen. I mean...if the name works, why change it? Anyway, I am joined by legendary comic book artist Jon Bogdanove to talk about the film since he has more than a passing knowledge with not only the story, but also with the character of Steel. We have a great conversation about what about the film worked and the few things that didn't and how my opinion of the film has changed over the years. We also talk about how Jon came to be part of the Superman creative team, his approach to drawing the character, how one of his stories has now become a popular meme when discussing fascism, and how the Zero Hour crossover issue of Superman: The Man of Steel nearly broke Jon but also made him a better artist. I cannot thank Jon enough for coming on the show to talk about this movie. It was a lot of fun and a great follow-up to my talk with Jerry Ordway. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Episode 31 - Moving Kryptonian Images Interlude - Superman (2025) First and Second Impressions
Welcome to a very special, off the cuff, and completely spoiler filled installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am solo to discuss my first (and second) impressions of the new Superman film. I cannot express how spoiler filled this episode is. I talk about key moments and plot points from the film, so if you haven't seen it, you might want to hang on to it until you have. Are you cool with that? Good. So...yeah. I talk about what I thought of the movie. I go through the very few problems I had with the movie and everything I loved about it. Superman. Lois Lane. Lex Luthor. The Daily Planet staff. Lex's people. The Justice Gang. The themes of the films. The score. I go through everything in the most off the cuff and unedited way possible. Again...spoilers. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Episode 30 - Adapting All-Star Superman: A Conversation with Meghan Fitzmartin
Another week, another tangent from Moving Kryptonian Images. This should be the last one. Promise. Anyway, in a weird way this episode could be considered an addendum to the conversation I had with Russ Burlingame about All-Star Superman. In the time between that episode and this one, another adaptation of that story has been released. On June 24, 2025 Penguin Random House put out an audiobook version of All-Star Superman with a cast that includes Marc Thompson, Kristen Sieh, Christopher Smith, Matthew Amendt, Scott Brick, Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes, Robert Fass, January LaVoy, Saskia Maarleveld, Brandon McInnis, and Ray Porter. I've been wanting DC to do more in the audio realm, especially with Superman, and it's cool that this came along. Joining me this time to discuss the audiobook and the story in general is the woman that adapted the story. Meghan Fitzmartin is no stranger to either writing adaptations of DC characters or writing the characters for the comics. Her credits include Dark Crisis: Young Justice, Tim Drake: Robin, and Batman: Urban Legends as well as the animated film Justice Society: World War II and both parts of Justice League and Rwby: Superheroes and Huntsman. In a pinned post over on Blue Sky she wrote that you could ask her anything about All-Star Superman and I thought I would take her up on that offer. For a little over an hour we discuss a variety of topics, including what fantastic comic turned Meghan into a lifelong fan, how Adventures in Odyssey led to her love of audio dramas, what went into turning Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's comic book story into an audiobook, her feelings on Bizarro speak, who Lex Luthor would have voted for in the recent election, which live action Lois Lane made her love the character, and so much more. It was a fun conversation, and I appreciate Meghan taking the time to join me on the show. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! You can subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts/iTunes or stream it through Spotify, iHeart Radio, and Audible. The Fortress of Baileytude Podcasting Network is on Patreon. The opening theme to the show is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. The closing theme is a surprise. Next Time: I should get back to Moving Kryptonian Images. Reign of the Supermen is the next film in the series and I will be joined by a special guest. Who? You'll have to tune in to find out!

Episode 29 - The Fantastic Four Connection
For various reasons, the next installment of Moving Kryptonian Images has been delayed. But...that doesn't mean that I don't have a new episode of the show to release. Because I care. Recently I sat down with Andrew Leyland (you know, my co-host on The Overlooked Dark Knight and the co-host of Hey Kids Comics and the host of The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning) and we talked about three times where Superman, either directly or indirectly, crossed paths with The Fantastic Four. Why? Because the FF are getting a new movie a few weeks after Superman gets his new movie and I like jumping on bandwagons. Mercenary? Yes. Do I care? Not really. Anyway, Andy used to co-host a Fantastic Four show and we're friends, so this episode seemed like a good idea. We have a brief chat about our histories with the Fantastic Four, our thoughts on their previous cinematic efforts, why you shouldn't watch the 2015 film, and then we get into some comics. First up are Adventures of Superman issues 466 and 468, which feature Superman going up against a very Fantastic Four like team, one of which ends up being a pretty big deal. Then we talk about the Superman/Fantastic Four treasury crossover from 1999, which features the previously mentioned big deal. Finally, we talk about Fantastic Four issues 249 and 250 where the FF go up against Gladiator in a story that came about because John Byrne had beef with E. Nelson Bridwell. No. I'm not kidding about that. But...level with me...are you really surprised? Many thanks to Andy taking time out of his Saturday to talk with me about Superman and the Fantastic Four. Check out his shows. They are keen. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! The opening theme to the show is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. The closing theme is a surprise. Next Time: Hopefully I'll be getting back to Moving Kryptonian Images. If not, I'll either cover some of the feedback I'm getting or maybe I'll talk about my thoughts concerning the new Superman film since we're so close to it being released.

Episode 28 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 20 - The Death of Superman (2018)
Welcome to a very special installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! In 2018, the most famous (or, as some would say, infamous) Superman story of all time got a second chance at an animated film. Despite looking more like a New 52 story, The Death of Superman was a closer adaptation to the original comic book story than the 2007 version. Because of that, I wanted to do something special with this episode and the next one and having one of the architects of said original comic book story seemed like the way to go. Joining me for this episode is Jerry Ordway and the conversation we had touches on the animated film but goes far beyond it as well. Jerry shares his thoughts on the movie, but also what it was like attending a screening in New York City where he got to meet some of the cast and crew. We also touch on the behind the scenes of the original comic book version of the death of Superman, how Jerry broke into comics, his early career and how quitting DC led to him getting more work, the early days of the Post Crisis era, and so much more. He also talks about his visit to the set of the new Superman film and what it was like meeting the new Superman and Lex Luthor. I cannot thank Jerry enough for appearing on this episode. It meant a lot to this Post Crisis fan. Andy Leyland joins me to talk about the times that Superman met the Fantastic Four (and vice versa) both directly and indirectly.

Episode 27 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 19 - Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Welcome to another, equally controversial installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! Jon Wilson (he of of Ninjas and Bots, Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later, and The Spider Diaries) returns to talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It is both fair and accurate to say that from the time it was announced and especially when it was released that this movie has garnered a lot of controversy. Not real controversy. I mean...there are many, many, many real controversies in the world that we should be arguing about, but for some reason this movie gets brought up again and again. Seriously. The world's on fire. And not in a good way. And people still focus on this film. It's wild. Though, how much of a leg to stand on do I have? I've been doing a whole series about Superman movies. Anyway, Jon and I have another honest conversation about the movie and once again I chose to take on the movie on the movie's terms. We talk about the Bat costume, whether or not this was the right take on Batman for the first film in a new iteration, what potential crimes Batman committed...man, we talked about Batman a lot. But we also talked about Superman, Lex Luthor, Lois, and much, much more. The good. The bad. What we liked. What we didn't like. It was a fun two hours. Once again, I'd like to thank Jon for joining me on this episode. Head on over to the Jon Reads Comics site to check out all of his fantastic podcasts. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Episode 26 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 18 - Man of Steel
Welcome to a controversial installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! I think it is both fair and accurate to say that Man of Steel is a contentious Superman film, at least as far as the Superman fan community is concerned. It was a movie that brought in a new generation of fans, but it was also a movie that did things to the character that some (not all, some) older fans had serious problems while other older fans really liked it and what could best be described as a bar fight broke out on social media platforms and, in some corners of those platforms, that fight is still going on. Talking about Man of Steel is much more complicated than it needs to be. Because of that, I wanted to talk to someone that loves Man of Steel but is still willing to have a genuine and honest conversation about the film. Which is why I asked my good friend Jon Wilson (he of Ninjas and Bots, Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later, and The Spider Diaries) to not only join me for this episode, but also the next one. We talk about all of the big moments of the film as well as the moments that caused the most controversy. The new version of Krypton, Jonathan Kents "maybe", Jonathan Kent's death, this version of Zod, the neck snap heard round the world, and Zack Snyder and David Goyer's take on Superman in general. I'm not saying it's the most in-depth conversation about Man of Steel, but it's honest and kind of funny at times. Episode 25 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 17 - Superman Unbound
Welcome to a boundless installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out Tyler Patrick of The Krypton Report joins me to talk about Superman Unbound. This animated film is based on the Brainiac storyline from Action Comics issues 866-870, which was written by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank and is the second animated film covered in this series where Superman faces off against Brainiac. As has become the norm with these animated films Tyler and I talk about both the movie and the comic, comparing and contrasting the two and even going into the time period the story was originally published. We also talk about Supergirl's role in the film, the voice cast, the animated, and the music. Plus, in the middle I fight a bear. Okay, I don't fight a bear at any point in the episode. I was just seeing if you were paying attention to the notes at this point. Once again, I wanted to thank Patrick for being on the show. Be sure to check out The Krypton Report because it's a great show. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Next Time: Moving Kryptonian Images continues with Jon M Wilson joining me for the first of two appearances. We're talking about a little film that may have made some waves online. Man of Steel.

Summer Special #2 - Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Welcome to second in my Summer Special series, which I'm doing because there's a big time Superman film coming out and extra content seemed like a fun idea. Also, I'm in the middle of big-time mega-series on the main show, and that series is pretty rigid in its format, so specials were the only way I was going to be able to talk about the things I am going to be talking about. This time out I am joined by Rob O'Connor and Alan Burke of the All-Star Superfan Podcast to discuss a story that many Superman fans consider to be on the greatest of all time. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow originally appeared in Superman #423 and Action Comics #583 and served as the close out to Silver and Bronze Age era that was just about to be shown the door in favor of John Byrne's Man of Steel series. Written by Alan Moore with art by Curt Swan, George Perez, and Kurt Schaffenberger, this story tells the story of Superman's final days, which are filled with violence, heart ache, and a last stand in the Fortress of Solitude. So... not exactly a laugh riot, but a compelling story, nonetheless. Rob, Alan, and I tackle this story from every angle. We talk about the previously mentioned violence, our favorite parts, our less than favorite parts, Superman's actions at the end of the story, and ask whether or not this was a fitting end to the Silver and Bronze Age of Superman. We also get into the thorny debate of whether or not Superman should kill or not, which is an issue that has come up a lot in Superman fandom since the snap heard round the world in Man of Steel. I wanted to thank Alan and Rob again for joining me on this one. It was a lot of fun. Check out the All-Star Superfan Podcast. It's amazing. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Next Time: Come back on Monday for another installment of Moving Kryptonian Images. Tyler Patrick and I are talking about Superman Unbound. And then, in two weeks, another Summer Special where I go solo and talk about the various number one issues Superman has had.

Episode 24 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 16 - Superman vs The Elite
Welcome to a...dare I write it...SUPER sized installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am shaking up the format. Slightly. This time I am joined by old friend Charlie Niemeyer (host of Charlie's Geekcast and Ranger Chronicles) to talk about Superman vs. The Elite, the 2012 animated adaptation of 2001's Action Comics #775. What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way is considered by many Superman fans to be a stone cold classic, and the movie adaptation seems to be well regarded as well. Charlie and I talk about both the comic and the movie and while there are many aspects of both that we liked we also have some reservations about them. We talk about the cultural climate of 2001 and, to a lesser extent, 2012 (when the movie came out) as well as the animation, the story, how I really wanted an overt homage to Rocky IV at one point in the film, and the differences between the ending of the movie and the comic. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! After the comic/movie talk, I present audio that was recorded at the 2017 DragonCon in Atlanta, Georgia. That year I had the honor of co-moderating a panel with Comics and Pop Art programming director Tony Barleta started with everyone watching Superman vs. The Elite (I didn't record that part) and was followed by a Q and A with Joe Kelly himself! The audio quality is not the best at times, especially when it came to audience questions, but this was a fun panel and Joe was the nicest guy ever and revealed some fun behind the scenes stories about the movie and his time writing Action Comics. Once again I want to thank Charlie for being on this episode. We've known each other a long time and it was great reconnecting with him about this movie. Be sure to check out Charlie's Geekcast and Ranger Chronicles. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! Trailer Reaction Special
The first full trailer for James Gunn's Superman film dropped on May 14th and because there is a little-known federal law that was passed with full bipartisan support several years ago that states if you are a Superman content creator and a new Superman trailer (teaser or otherwise) drops, you have to do a reaction video/episode within 10 business days or face substantial fines and possibly jail time. Given how well I would do in prison (or rather how well I wouldn't do in prison) and the fact that I couldn't pay any kind of fine, substantial or otherwise, I thought it would be better to get this done as soon as possible. Joining me to talk about the trailer is my good friend Jon M Wilson, who you might know from such podcasts as Superman in Crisis, Babylon 5: Thirty Years Later, and 90s Ninjas and Bots, and we have a grand old time talking about the trailer. Actually, we talk about the trailers for Superman The Movie, Superman Returns, Man of Steel, and discuss how those films were marketed and then we do the breakdown of the new trailer. From David's Superman voice to our first real look at Lois to how adorable Krypto is to the Kents being alive, Jon and I cover all of that and more. It's two and a half hours of Superman talk with a few digressions and some snark just for fun. Be sure to check out Jon's podcasting work. You can do that by going to his websitte, Jon Reads Comics. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 23 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 15 - All-Star Superman
Welcome to another cells exploding installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by Russ Burlingame (journalist and author of The Gold Exchange: The Unofficial Booster Gold Companion and Best Movie Ever: An Oral History of Kaplan and Elfront's Josie and the Pussycats) to talk about 2011's All-Star Superman. Russ and I cover a lot of ground in this episode because of how beloved the original comic book version has become. We talk about how well the movie adapted the source material, the things they left out, they way both the comic book and movie treated Lex Luthor compared to how other writers have in the past twenty years, the ending, what people are looking for in a Superman film compared to a Superman television series, and so much more. We also go on several digressions about the upcoming James Gunn film that somehow come back to the main conversation. Once again, I'd like to thank Russ for joining me. Be sure to check out his books The Gold Exchange: The Unofficial Booster Gold Companion and Best Movie Ever: An Oral History of Kaplan and Elfront's Josie and the Pussycats as well as his work on ECV Analog and Oni Press. Episode 22 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 14 - Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
Welcome to another apocalyptic installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I welcome Doctor Anj (of the Supergirl: Comic Box Commentary blog) to talk about Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, which adapts the Superman/Batman: Supergirl storyline. Not that you could tell from the title of the movie and that's one of the things that Anj and I talk about. Other topics include, but are not limited to, how this storyline brought the Kara Zor-El Supergirl back to the mainstream DCU, the character designs, the animation, the Fourth World, Darkseid, and the Supergirl series that followed the Superman/Batman arc. Again, be sure to check out Anj's blog, Supergirl: Comic Box Commentary. He's been writing about Supergirl since 2007, so not only is it full of great reviews and commentary, but it's also a natural history of Supergirl over the past seventeen years. Summer Special #1 - Saying Goodbye to Superman & Lois
Hey there and welcome to the first in a series of Summer Specials here on It All Comes Back to Superman. I don't know if you've heard but there's a new Superman movie coming out this summer and both DC Comics and DC Studios have declared this to be the Summer of Superman! I don't know if this is a legally binding type of thing, but I felt obligated to celebrate this with a series of specials because I can't do it in the main show because I'm in the midst of a huge mega-series called Moving Kryptonian Images. So, these specials will allow me to do some fun Superman content that doesn't have anything to do with the movies. Notice I wrote, "...to do with the movies," because this first special is about a live action version of Superman. And Lois. Back in December of last year the final episode of Superman and Lois aired and it was very emotional for me. I loved that show. I loved the cast. I loved the writing, and it was very hard to watch the show end after four great seasons. I thought about doing a "saying goodbye" episode at the end of last year, but it didn't feel right. I wanted to let some time pass before I collected my thoughts and shared them with the world. And that's what this episode is. Me, looking back on this, the most unlikely Superman show of all time, and talking about why I loved it so much. Joining me is my co-host over on The Overlooked Dark Knight (as well as the co-host of Hey Kids Comics with his son Micheal and the host of The Amazing Spider-Man from the Beginning) Andrew Leyland, who was also a fan of the show. We talk about the early days when Tyler was a guest star on the Supergirl television series, the crossovers, the Crisis, and then we get into the series proper. It's a fun, sometimes silly, sometimes poignant conversation where Andy and I tell you why this show was so special. Things continue to be animated this time out on the seemingly never ending podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out Donovan Morgan Grant of Questions: We Don't Have Answers Podcast and writer for the DC Comics website joins me to talk about Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, the animated film that adapted the World's Finest story that appeared in the first six issues of the Superman/Batman series. Don and I go over both the movie and the comics, mainly pointing out the differences between the two but also what this series meant to the world of comics when it first came out and what it meant to us as readers. As stated, Don co-hosts the Questions: We Don't Have Answers podcast and writes articles for the DC Comics website. Be sure to check out his work because it's fantastic. It All Comes Back to Superman JSApril Special #2 - Smallville: Absolute Justice
Welcome to It All Comes Back to Superman Series 2's second and final entry into the mammoth and totally awesome JSApril podcasting crossover! Because the JSA is turning 85 this year and a bunch of us wanted to celebrate that! This time out I am joined by Derek Russel (he of Super House of El and The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast) to talk about the first time the Justice Society was ever done in live action and it just so happens that it is Superman related. Back in 2010 the Smallville television series had an epic, two hour event called Absolute Justice. The death of a man named Sylvester Pemberton puts Clark and Chloe on the path that leads to a group of costumed heroes of the past. Through the course of the two episodes we get to see Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Stargirl, and the villainous Icicle and even get hints of another DC institution, Checkmate! Derek and I talk about it from all angles. How did it work as (technically) two episodes of Smallville? How well did they adapt these characters? Why was I so excited to see J'onn J'onnz and Doctor Fate on screen together? How much comic book minutia about Hawkman can I cram into one episode? What is up with Doctor Fate's gloves? All of these questions and more are asked and answered! If you want to check out the other shows and blogs that are part of JSApril, click on this link for a full list of shows! Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. At the end of this series I will be doing a feedback special going through all of the emails and comments that are left or sent! It All Comes Back to Superman JSApril Special #1 - Thy Kingdom Come
Welcome to It All Comes Back to Superman Series 2's entry into the mammoth and totally awesome JSApril podcasting crossover! What is JSApril? It's a celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Justice Society of America! It was spearheaded by my friend Shag from The Fire and Water Podcast Network and there are dozens of blogs and podcasts that are all doing entries and episodes focusing on some aspect of the JSA's history. In this, the first of two specials that you'll be getting, I talk about the Justice Society of America storyline Thy Kingdom Come. Actually, I do a bit of podcasting multitasking because I also wanted to devote episodes of this show to the stories appearing in the Superman trade boxset that has the snazzy new Superman shield from the movie on the slipcase and one of those is Kingdom Come. So, I mainly talk about the Thy Kingdom Come storyline that ran in Justice Society of America issues 10-22 as well as the annual from 2008 and three specials that came out in November of 2008 but I also spend some time talking about Kingdom Come as well. I also go through where my love of the JSA came from, the set-up to the storyline, some very basic bits of background on why it happened, and then I get into the story itself and along the way I dig into Superman's role in Kingdom Come, why I have come to love that version of the Man of Steel, and a deep dive into the Justice Society of America Kingdom Come Superman Special #1! If you want to check out the other shows and blogs that are part of JSApril, click on this link for a full list of shows! Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 20 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 12 - Superman/Doomsday
Welcome to another city smashing installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by Anthony Desiato of Digging For Kryptonite: A Superman Fan Journey and Another Exciting Episode in the Adventures of Superman to talk about the first in a series of animated movies featuring DC characters or adaptations of actual comic book stories. Superman/Doomsday was released in September of 2007 and was not so much an adaptation of The Death and Return of Superman saga as something that was inspired by that story. Anthony and I discuss the pros and cons of taking story beats from the Death and Return (an important story for both of us) as well as the voice cast and the special features that came with the original DVD release. I also spend a good more time than necessary complaining about the Death and Return omnibus that came out at the same time. Again, Anthony hosts Digging for Kryptonite and Another Exciting Episode in the Adventures of Superman. Both of these shows are excellent podcasts and Anthony has done such a great job shining a light on Superman history and the fifties Adventures of Superman television series. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 19 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 11 - Superman Returns
Welcome...or should I say thank you for returning to the seemingly never ending podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out Andrew Leyland of Hey Kids Comics, The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning, and The Overlooked Dark Knight fame joins me to talk about 2006's Superman Returns. In the interest of fairness I will warn you that our conversation is not exactly positive. This movie, the first live action Superman film in 19 years, had a huge marketing push and people, including us, were excited, but the final product was...mixed. Andy and I talk about the problems we had with the film but also the things about the film that we liked, which includes the score. We also talk about the lead-up to the movie and even the comic book tie-ins which were definitely stories told with words and images. As previously mentioned Andy either hosts or co-hosts several other shows. These include Hey Kids Comics (which he co-hosts with his son Micheal), The Amazing Spider-Man From The Beginning (which he hosts on his own), and The Overlooked Dark Knight (which he co-hosts with me). These are all great shows, even the one with me, and you should definitely check them out. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Superman Day 2025 Special - Mike's Top 10 Bestest Superman Stories Ever
It's Superman Day! Yes, once again April 18th has rolled around and another Superman Day has come to pass and this year I was in a position to actually do something about it and that "thing" is something I've been planning for literally years and now I am finally getting it done. Presenting...my Top 10 Bestest Superman Stories Ever! Not the "best" Superman stories. Not my "favorite" Superman story. An amalgam of the two ideas mashed together to make for something that truly reflects what I love about Superman and his stories. After going through my thoughts on Top 10 lists in general, and talking about what criteria I used to come up with this list I get right into it. Some are obvious. Some less so. Some are tied to when I was a kid and some are very, very personal. What are those Top 10 Bestest Stories? Well, I am not going to spoil that here. You'll have to listen to find out but it's totally worth it. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 18 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 10 - Brainiac Attacks
Welcome to another exciting and can't miss installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by Luke Bugg, the Geek of Steel, host of The Podcast of Steel and co-host of The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast, to talk about the 2006 direct-to-home media movie Superman: Brainiac Attacks. This is the one movie I thought I would have the hardest time finding a co-host for because it is not well regarded by...just about everyone. But Luke actually requested this one and we had a good time talking about it and his Superman fandom and our excitement for the upcoming movie. Seriously. It was such a good time. Again, be sure to check out Luke on The Podcast of Steel and The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast. He is one of the most genuinely positive voices in Superman fandom. Episode 17 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 9 (Addendum) - Superman Reborn The First Draft
Welcome to an installment of the podcasting maxi-series Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman that was not planned at all and came together quickly! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! In the previous episode Adam Mallinger and I talked about three scripts that were ultimately unproduced on the long, nineteen year road to what would become Superman Returns. One of those scripts was Superman Reborn, which Adam and I assumed was an earlier draft. What we didn't know at the time is that the first draft of what was originally called Superman: The New Movie had gotten a full blown reading at the Broadway Theater in Hollywood thanks to funding from the Kaplan-Loring Foundation. I mentioned this in post on the last episode and even included a link to the YouTube video in the show notes at the website. The man who spearheaded this whole thing is named David Kocher and he was nice enough to sit down with me and talk about how this reading came about. We touch on David's origins as a fan of Superman, how he met Mark Jones (who had the first draft) finding a director, the casting, and everything that went into the reading. We also have a spirited discussion about Superman movies in general and David shares his thoughts on the film that is hitting theaters in July. I can't thank David enough for agreeing to be part of this series. As I indicated earlier this reading came seemingly out of nowhere and talking to David and watching the reading fit right in to what I've been doing for the past few months. Be sure to check out David's YouTube channel, which can be found by clicking this link. During the end tag I mentioned the JSApril event that I'll be a part of towards the end of the month. My good friend Shag of the Fire and Water Podcasting Network organized this and I'll be joining a bunch of other shows that are celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Justice Society of America. Until my shows come out check out the other great podcasts that are a part of this event by clicking on this link! Episode 16 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 9 - Roads Not Taken: Superman Reborn, Lives, and Flyby
Welcome to an off-beat installment of the podcasting maxi-series Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am not covering a movie, either live action or animated. I am covering three scripts to Superman films that were never made. Joining me is Adam Mallinger, who not only worked as a script reader early in his career but was a staff writer on the CW series Superman and Lois. Adam and I go through drafts of Superman Reborn (which, if made, would have brought back Christopher Reeve as Superman, Superman Lives (written by Kevin Smith), and Superman: Flyby (written by J.J. Abrams). We discuss our overall feelings on these scripts, Kevin Smith, the role the internet plays in how movies get made, Ain't It Cool News, and more. We also dig into the differences between a script and the movie that is eventually made of that script. Adam and I recorded this episode last year and in the time since our recording and this episode getting released there was a full cast reading of the first draft of Superman Reborn (which was originally called Superman: The New Movie) organized by David Kocher. Adam and I don't talk about it because it had not happened yet much less posted to YouTube. If you want to see that reading, the video is embedded below. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 15 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 8 - The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest
Welcome to the another bat-tastic installment of the podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out J David Weter (but you can call him Dave) of The Bat-Pod Podcast and Justice League Legacies joins me to talk about The Batman/Superman Movie: World's Finest. This is another example of Warner Brothers taking three episodes of Superman: The Animated Series and cutting them together as a direct-to-video movie, which means that I am once again calling it a movie and covering it. Dave and I talk about why despite years of being teammates on the various Super Friends show this first team up in the DC Animated Universe was such a big deal, romance (or the lack thereof) in Superman: The Animated Series, how this movie could have easily been a live action film, and more! Be sure to check out Dave's show The Bat-Pod and Justice League Legacies. Dave has been a podcasting for well over a decade now and has had many shows and they are always of high quality and a lot of fun. Episode 14 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 7 - Superman: The Last Son of Krypton
Welcome to another animated installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by Stuart Mulrain of the And Why Not Podcast and the Countdown... to Superman podcast to talk about Superman: The Last Son of Krypton. Which is essentially the first three episodes of Superman: The Animated Series cut together as a short film. The reason it counts for this series is that Warner Bros. sold this as a direct-to-home video and so I'm including it in this series. My show. My rules. Anyway, Stuart and I talk about how he watched it as someone that is from the UK, the "wacky" way the WB premiered it here in the states, the cast, the story, the music and the animated series in general. Be sure to check out Stuart's shows And Why Not and Countdown... to Superman. Both are great shows and I'm not just saying that because Stuart has had me on both. Episode 13 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 6 - Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Welcome to another amazingly nineties-tastic installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I head back to 1993 and talk about the pilot film for Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Joining me is the co-host of The MovieFilm Podcast, the host of Nostalgia Theater, and film critic for The San Francisco Chronicle Zaki. Zaki and I have a lot in common when it comes to Superman in general and this show specifically and that becomes apparent very quickly during our conversation. We go over how we first heard about the show, the ads that aired on ABC, watching it the night it premiered, the movie itself, and a little bit about the series in general. We also talk about the theme by Jay Gruska, which sounds a lot like the theme to another show, The Colbys. Be sure to check out Zaki on The MovieFilm Podcast and Nostalgia Theater. He, along with his co-host Brian Hall, have done commentaries for every Christopher Reeve Superman film as well as Man of Steel and the Lois and Clark pilot! Episode 12 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 5 - Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
Welcome to another exciting installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out Zach Moore from Always Hold on to Smallville joins me to talk about one of the more controversial entries in this series. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace has a reputation for being cheap looking at best and the low point for Superman on film at its worst. Zach and I have a conversation that tends to focus on the more negative parts of the film, but in my defense I have done two commentaries, so I promise that I actually like this movie. So, look at this as a more critical look coming from two people that have positive feelings towards it, but are talking about the movie as presented and not the movie we could have gotten if things turned out differently. As I previously mentioned, Zach is the host of Always Hold on to Smallville, which by this point is either close to or actually finished with looking at the entirety of that series. It's a great show and you should definitely check it out. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Episode 11 - Moving Kryptonian Images Part 4 - Superman III
Welcome to another thill packed installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! MOLDED PLASTIC SEATS! This time out Derek Russell of The Super House of El and The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast joins me to talk about Superman III. I figured if I was going to have a Superman film that partially takes place in Smallville that I should have a podcaster and friend that has been talking about the Smallville television series since 2005. Derek and I spend most of the episode defending this film, as it usually gets a fair amount of crap amongst Superman fans. We talk about Clark in Smallville, Annette O'Toole as Lana Lang, Gus Gorman, and, of course, the junkyard scene. Be sure to check out Derek on The Super House of El and also on The Siegel and Shuster Society Podcast with future guest Luke Bugg. Derek has been a good friend for years and a trendsetter in terms of geek related podcasts. Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. Welcome to another thrill packed installment of a podcasting maxi-series called Moving Kryptonian Images: The Live Action and Animated Adventures of Superman! The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! This time out I am joined by Scott Ryfun, the most listened to man in South Georgia, to talk about Superman II. Which we do. Mostly. In and around talking about the movie itself we chat about watching HBO in the early to mid eighties, what comic book shows and movies were like going back to the sixties, problems with VHS copies of Superman The Movie, and more. We also get into the whole Lester Cut vs Donner Cut debate because you really can't avoid that argument when you are talking about this movie. If you are in south Georgia or northern Florida, you can listen to Scott on his show Straight Talk on WGIG 98.7 Monday thru Friday from 6 AM to 10 AM. This time out I am joined by Steve Glosson, who is not only one of my oldest friends in podcasting but also the host of Geek Out Loud, to talk about Superman The Movie. What can be said about this film that hasn't been said before? I'm sure we don't break any new ground or uncover some fascinating new angle on the themes of this film, but we do go over the things we love about it and, oddly enough, the few criticisms that I have for the movie. I also included one or two fun bits of audio from the movie's original network premiere. More than anything it's two middle-aged men gushing over a film that helped define their younger days. Be sure to check out Steve's show Geek Out Loud. Steve is one of the most positive voices in geek culture and has been at this game for decades. There is something for everyone to geek out on. The purpose of this series is to celebrate the release of the new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor! For this first installment I am joined by Rob O'Connor and Alan Burke of the All-Star Superfan Podcast to discuss Superman and the Mole Men, which is the first live action Superman feature film ever! Through the course of the episode we talk about the fact that this was sort of, kind of the pilot for the Adventures of Superman television series, George Reeves as Superman, Noel Neil as Lois Lane, the special effects, and the political overtones of the story. We also talk a bit about the Adventures of Superman television series in general and how this film was originally distributed. Be sure to check out Rob and Alan's show. Episode 7 - Looking Back and Looking Forward
This time out is another off the cuff, non-scripted solo episode where I talk about how 2024 shaped up as a year for me as a Superman fan and my goals for 2025. I talk about the comics I read (the end of Phillip Kennedy Johnson's run, Joshua Williamson's Superman, House of Brainiac, and Absolute Superman all get discussed), the shows I watched (My Adventures with Superman and Superman and Lois), my convention adventures, podcasting highlights, and shows I guested on all get discussed. Then I look to the future and what my Superman related goals for 2025. Plus, I talk about the mega series I have coming, which starts next week! During this episode I mention the JSApril event which is coming in...April. It's right there in the name. You can find the home base for that event by clicking on this link. Episode 6 - Unscripted Thoughts on Superman (2025)
This time out I am unscripted and off the cuff! Anything can happen! Damn the man! Save The Empire! Or something like that. In all seriousness, this time out I present an episode where I just sit in front of the microphone and go over all of my thoughts about the Superman film that is coming out next July. With the release of the teaser trailer I thought it was time to finally collect my thoughts about everything we've seen from the film thus far and get them out in a mostly coherent fashion. I start with the first images we were shown and then go forward from there. Topics include but are not limited to the first costume reveal, the set photos, and then (finally) I get to the trailer itself. I don't do a full frame by frame break down but I do go through the moments that stood out to me. I also talk about what I think the plot is going to be, why comparing this teaser trailers to the ones from the past is both valid and not fair, the thing about this film that separates it from past feature film versions, and more. Oh, and I talk about the music. BECAUSE I LOVED THE MUSIC! Feedback for It All Comes Back To Superman Series 2 can be sent to [email protected]. The closing theme to the show is titled Journey and was composed by Pontus Rufelt. It is licensed from Shockwave-Sound. Next Time: I'm not sure. I have a few different ideas for an episode before I start a series that I'll be revealing just after the first of the year. Stay tuned and all that.

Episode 5 - The Definitive History Tapes Part 2: A Conversation with Bob Greenberger
This time out I finish up my two part series talking to the authors of Superman: The Definitive History by having a great chat with Bob Greenberger. Bob is no stranger to working on a book about Superman as he was one of the co-authors of The Essential Superman Encyclopedia and I talk to him about that, The Definitive History, his time working on Comics Scene for Starlog, how he came to work for DC Comics, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Who's Who, and so much more. We also touch on the history of comic book fandom and Bob tells us what it was like collecting comics in the sixties and seventies. Once again, I'd like to thank Bob for sitting down with me to record this. It was a lot of fun. To order Superman: The Definitive History by Ed Gross and Bob Greenberger click on this link. Episode 4 - The Definitive History Tapes Part 1: Ed Gross Returns
It All Comes Back to Superman Series Two is back with another interview! Actually it's the first of two interviews talking to the authors of Insight Editions book Superman: The Definitive History. This time out I once again sit down with Ed Gross, who is no stranger to books about Superman or books about pop culture in general. Ed and I have a great conversation that starts with us talking about the finale of Superman and Lois before getting into how this book (which you will need a spotter to read) came about. We chat about the differences in writing this book compared to Ed's last Superman book Voices From Krypton, how to balance the comic book side of Superman's history with all of the other places he has shown up over the decades, where we are in terms of Superman's place in pop culture, and so much more. To order Superman: The Definitive History by Ed Gross and Bob Greenberger click on this link. To order Voices From Krypton (which I am quoted in towards the end) click on this link. To see all of Ed's books on pop culture click on this link. Many thanks to Ed for sitting down and speaking with me. Episode 3 - Zero Hour with Dan Jurgens
Welcome to the third episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Series 2, the very irregular reaffirmation of my Kryptonian faith. This time out I'm hopping into the Time Bubble and heading back to 1994 to look at the DC Comics event Zero Hour: Crisis in Time. And I am not alone. Joining me to talk about the series is none other than the writer/penciller on that series Dan Jurgens! Dan was nice enough to spend about an hour with me to talk about how Zero Hour came about, what it was like writing and drawing five issues that were coming out weekly while also juggling all of the characters and books that were connected to the event. Dan also tells me why some of the promotional artwork and the artwork created for the distributors that existed at the time isn't reprinted in the collected editions that have been published in the last few years, why the Justice Society was taken off the table during the story, his favorite parts of the story, and how much he got paid to draw the cover to the zero issue. After that we discuss the Zero Month issues of the Superman books and where Kenny Braverman came from. Finally, Dan talks a bit about the Zero Hour 30th Anniversary Special that is coming out on the day this episode is dropping! I wanted to thank Dan for spending some time with me and being so forthcoming and open with his answers. It All Comes Back To Superman Presents...Reuse, Recycle, Re-Release Episode 4 - The Death and Return of Superman 25 Years Later
This time I am re-presenting an episode of a show I did for like five seconds called Fortress of Baileytude Showcase Presents. Or something like that. It was this weird thing I was trying to do that just didn't catch on. To be honest, this episode should have been on the It All Comes Back to Superman in the first time. Anyway, back in 2018 my good friend the Irredeemable Shag and I spent nearly three hours talking about the Death and Return of Superman phenomena and it was a fun episode to record. We go through the entire event from inception to the return of the one, true Superman. Shag gives a lot of insight about what it was like to be a retailer during those days, and I played a bunch of clips from various news reports that...reported on the event. During the episode I mentioned an Oral History that was on SyFy Wire in 2018. That article doesn't exist anymore, which is a shame. Below are a list of the various shows that Shag hosts or co-hosts over at The Fire and Water Podcast Network. Once Upon a Geek Justice Society Presents Who's Who Review Aquaman and Firestorm: The Fire and Water Podcast Justice League International: Bwah-Ha-Ha Podcast Next time: No clue. Haven't decided yet, but something should be coming next month.

IT ALL COMES BACK TO SUPERMAN PRESENTS...REUSE, RECYCLE, RE-RELEASE EPISODE 3 - SILVER AND BRONZE AGE ORIGINS PART 2
Welcome to the third episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Presents…Reuse, Recycle, Re-Release, a sub-series of It All Comes Back to Superman Series II where I will occasionally re-present an episode of one of my other shows (either the first iteration of It All Comes Back to Superman or one of the Superman centric episode of Views From The Longbox) and represent them here for…no real reason other than it sounded like a good idea to get all of my non-From Crisis to Crisis Superman podcasting in one place…eventually. These episodes are presented in their entirety with original opening and closing themes, ads, commentary that may not mean anything anymore, and humor that may not have aged well. This time out I am bringing Views From The Longbox Episode 157 out of the vault, which was originally released on March 26, 2013. This was the second of a two-part episode where I had my good friend and Overlooked Dark Knight co-host Andrew Leyland on to talk about the Silver and Bronze Age origins of Superman. In this installment, which was part of the Superman at 75: The Celebration of a Legend series I did in 2013, Andy and I talk about Action Comics #500, which is one of my favorite Superman comics ever and one of the best re-tellings of the Pre-Crisis origin ever as well. Next Episode – The next time I roll out one of these I'll have a conversation with Steve Glosson from 2013 all about Smallville.

This time out I am bringing Views From The Longbox Episode 156 out of the vault, which was originally released on March 19, 2013. This was the first of a two-part episode where I had my good friend and Overlooked Dark Knight co-host Andrew Leyland on to talk about the Silver and Bronze Age origins of Superman. In this installment, which was part of the Superman at 75: The Celebration of a Legend series I did in 2013, Andy and I talk about how Superman's origin evolved from his first appearance up to the 1970's. What was added to the origin? When did we, as the audience, first see the full out origin in the comics? How irresponsible is Jonathan Kent with firearms? Listen and find out. IT ALL COMES BACK TO SUPERMAN PRESENTS...REUSE, RECYCLE, RE-RELEASE EPISODE 1 - 7 WAYS MIKE DEFENDS SUPERMAN
Welcome to the first episode of It All Comes Back to Superman Presents...Reuse, Recycle, Re-Release, a sub-series of It All Comes Back to Superman Series II where I will occasionally re-present an episode of one of my other shows (either the first iteration of It All Comes Back to Superman or one of the Superman centric episode of Views From The Longbox) and represent them here for...no real reason other than it sounded like a good idea to get all of my non-From Crisis to Crisis Superman podcasting in one place...eventually. These episodes are presented in their entirety with original opening and closing themes, ads, commentary that may not mean anything anymore, and humor that may not have aged well. For this first episode I'm going back to Views From The Longbox Episode 15, originally released on January 1, 2013. That episode kicked off my Superman at 75: The Celebration of a Legend series that was centered on celebrating Superman's...75th birthday. It's right there in the title. In the first installment, titled 7 Ways Mike Defends Superman, I recorded an hour long reply to a cracked article titled 7 Ways Batman is Objectively Better Than Superman. That article got under my skin a little over a decade ago and I felt that I needed to respond. Did I really need to do that? Not really, but it made for a solid way to beging a podcast series. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Michael Bailey likes Superman.
