Madness and Murder
by Danielle French
This podcast is comprised of episodes created by myself and students enrolled in my two sections of Freshman Honors Colloquium at Kent State University. Based on their year-long inquiry into psychopathology, media studies, literary and film criticism, rhetoric, dark tourism, and true crime, these groups of students must decide the case they cover, how they prioritize information they've independently gathered and analyzed about their case(s), and how they employ rhetorical appeals to connect with their listeners. They research, write, record, and edit each episode. Join us!

Episode 52: Dr. "Strychnine" Cream
Author: Meadow E. WeissDescription: In a time labeled the Golden Age of Poisoning, it should be no surprise that a high number of suspicious deaths were caused by lethal dosage in the Victorian Era. This frequent method of chemical killing was largely due to a lack of regulation surrounding the sale of poison, which many wrongdoers used to their advantage. One such wrongdoer was Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, who murdered ten people, most of which were prostitutes, with what would seem to be no motive other than an occasional blackmail money grab. Additionally, thanks to his alleged claim of being the renowned killer of 1888, this particular poisoner also landed himself on the list of possible Jack the Ripper suspects.Transcript: https://surl.li/lsohpqMusic: https://taketones.com/track/obscure-answersPicture of Cream: https://www.canadashistory.ca/explore/politics-law/the-evil-deeds-of-dr-cream

Episode 40: The Dyatlov Pass Incident
Authors:Charlie Cotteleer and Cassie Tyler Description: Charlie and Cassie dive into the Dyatlov Pass Incident. In 1959, nine hikers from the Ural Polytechnic Institute went on a hiking expedition in the Siberian Ural Mountains, but they never returned. When their bodies were found each member of the group was dead, most of whom with significant internal injuries. The case has captured international attention for over 60 years, culminating in many theories from avalanches to yetis. The trail they traveled has been renamed the “Dyatlov Pass”, after the lead hiker, in remembrance of the group. Dedicated to Madelyn Nelson, Charlie’s Partner Disclaimers: Neither of us is Russian, we did our best with pronunciation and consistency, but we apologize if they are inaccurate. The basic story of Dyatlov’s Pass is agreed upon; however, many details vary from report to report. We have done our best to compile reputable sources, but understand that given the historical context of the Soviet Union in the 1950s details may have been left out or exaggerated over time. Episode 37: Mourning Mothers: The Horrific Secrets of Dr. Hicks
Authors: Madilynn Kilgore and Joey GagorikDescription: In this new episode, we take a dive into the case of the Hicks Baby Clinic. Dr. Thomas Hicks was an important figure in Mcayesville, Georgia in the 1940s. He was the town’s doctor and took care of most of the residents. However, Hicks was a selfish man who fell prey to his greed. When illegal abortions weren’t paying enough to satisfy his hunger for money, he turned to a much more sinister practice. Hicks would steal babies from their mothers, often lying that they had died during birth. Out of the back door of his clinic he would sell these babies to anyone who wanted them. He families apart, broke the trust of the town, and took advantage of these, often young and poor, mothers. Join us as we uncover how his business came to be and analyze one of his victims–an adoptee named Melinda Elkins-Dawson. With this new story we hope to shed light on all affected by Dr. Hicks' crimes and hold him accountable for the unspeakable acts he has committed. Episode 31: JonBenét Ramsey - How the Media Derailed the Case
Authors: Gabrielle Hickman and Ellie Miller Description: In this episode, we discuss the case of JonBenét Ramsey. Because her case was so highly publicized, almost everyone has heard about her death and the various theories surrounding it. While there is a lot to cover regarding that aspect, something that is not discussed often is the media’s interference with the investigation and how they terrorized the people involved, including her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, her 9-year old brother, and detectives working on the case. They also spread rumors about the case itself, distracting investigators from actual leads. The most unfortunate part of it all was that little to none of the articles or media covering the case focused on remembering JonBenét. This innocent young girl lost her life, and all people want to hear about is the gore and outlandish theories. This podcast aims to change that narrative and remind people to monitor their media consumption, especially regarding cases that have real victims who deserve respect, just like JonBenét. Episode 18: The Horrifying Cases of the Infamous Dr. Deaths

The first is that of Dr. Harold Shipman and the second is Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Dr. Harold Shipman took advantage of over 200 patients and led them to their death unknowingly. To Shipman, he believed he was saving these patients from suffering, but to the horror of the patients’ families, he was a murderer. Season 2 Trailer: FHC Cohort of 2023-2024
Welcome back! I'm Danielle French, and this podcast is a class project for my sections of Freshman Honors Colloquium at Kent State University. Once again, we're analyzing true crime media this semester, and these brilliant students have an incredible season of new episodes for you. This season, students use this podcast as a space to create the media they think should be generated about a true crime case of their choosing. Students chose their partners for this assignment and have worked together to make decisions about the case they investigate and have collaboratively researched, written, recorded, and edited EVERY ASPECT of their episodes. Be sure to check out the episode descriptions where students give credit to and share their sources from which they gleaned information about the case. Once again, we are trying to answer the same question--is there a positive use of true crime? I hope you listen and try to answer that question with us.

ABOUT THIS SHOW
This podcast is comprised of episodes created by myself and students enrolled in my two sections of Freshman Honors Colloquium at Kent State University. Join us!
