Bethany and Dr. Kuba take a more serious tone today as they address the very real hardships of leadership, management, and practice ownership. The bottom line is – it is extremely difficult. Management Tool Kit: Salary Review

One of the most common questions that Bethany gets is, “When should I give a raise?” In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany unpack the mystery of salary and hourly increases. Their advice is to ensure that the team has a clear understanding of when and how often pay will be reevaluated. This clarity will prevent employees from asking for a raise, which seems to be every practice owner’s worst nightmare. Dive into this episode for more details on how to conduct salary reviews and what to expect in these meetings. Team pay is certainly a stressful aspect of practice ownership, but this episode will provide some thoughts and ideas to guide the owner through the process. Show hosts Bethany Petty and Dr. Reena Kuba discuss the following topics: What is a salary review? Are salary reviews the same thing as performance reviews? The importance of a full compensation packageRemaining competitive in pay 📣Make sure you check out the HUB!!  Don’t waste time creating resources from the ground up. Team Holiday Bonuses and Gifts

This time of year can be incredibly hard for dentists and practice owners because there are so many decisions to make when it comes to showing appreciation for team members. Should I do cash, a gift card, or a bonus through payroll? How much should I pay my team members? Should I do an equal amount or vary the amounts based on longevity? If we do a Holiday party, should I pay the team for the hours? All of the questions and more are covered by Dr. Kuba and Bethany in this episode. The end of the year is an important time to show appreciation, but there is much to consider and weigh out. To Hire or To Fire, That is the Question

How do you know if the person you recently hired is the right one? In this episode, Dr. Kuba and  Bethany discuss three recent examples where practice owners are evaluating this very question. At the 60 day point, one practice owner is already beginning to doubt her clinical assistant’s skillset. Another practice owner is trying to decide if it’s worth continuing to invest in his newest assistant who continues to buck the cultural norms of his practice. And yet, another practice owner likes her newest assistant (of 18 months) but the team can’t stand her. Dr. Kuba gives her advice in each of these three scenarios in hopes that listeners have tools to use when they are trying to decide whether to hire or fire.  Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: When to Call it Quits on an EmployeeHow to Effectively Welcome a New Employee 2026 Crash Course Dates are ALMOST GONE!!! When Team Members Won’t Follow the Lead

Changes in a practice are necessary. At times, changes are thrust upon a team, forcing them to pivot. Other times, the practice owner is watching the horizon for economic, technological, or financial impacts that may also force change. Regardless, change is necessary at times and also desirable at times. So, it can be extremely disheartening to have a team that refuses to follow their leader into new changes. In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany discuss the difficultly of change and yet the importance of it. They also discuss how to view and manage team members that may be resisting the revisions. They end with an important message for all practice owners and team members – don’t be a dingbat!  Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: How to Help Your Team Bear FruitDental Practice Owners are Leaders 2026 Crash Course Dates are ALMOST GONE!!! Sickening Mistakes

Every once in a while, hopefully rarely, you get smacked with terribly sickening mistakes. There is a long list of “small mistakes” that practices make that feel less consequential – like incorrectly spelling a patient’s name, communicating the wrong appointment date/time to a patient, or collecting an incorrect amount for treatment rendered. However, this episode focuses on some haunting mistakes that were brought to Dr. Kuba and Bethany’s attention.  In these situations, mistakes were made by team members and associates, leaving the practice owners terribly exposed and at risk. Phone Skills = First (or Last) Impression

Never underestimate the power of phone answering skills. The way a dental practice phone is answered can lead to a new patient appointment (or the lack of one). Good skills can lead to de-escalation of a frustrated patient and to the positive feeling of satisfaction while neutral or negative skills can unintentionally upset a patient or drive a patient away. Dr. Kuba and Bethany jump into this very important topic in today’s episode. When is the last time that you considered the way in which your phones are answered? Big Fish – The Nature of Boss and Team

As if last week’s “Male vs. Female” episode was not enough, Dr. Kuba and Bethany go in even further on difficult topics. Bethany summarizes some upsetting details from a client’s recent drama and discusses the specifics with Dr. Kuba. They both talk about the challenges of being equal to team members while also still having to be “boss.” When the balance gets out of whack, team members can rise up and challenge authority or develop unhealthy expectations of the practice owner. For gut-wrenching examples and dialogue, tune in! Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: When a Rotten Apple (or Employee) Spoils the BunchWhen Employees Feel Entitled At the beginning of this episode, Dr. Kuba calls ALL listeners to submit a written OR verbal account of how you took a tip from one of the episodes and used it in your practice. Male vs. Female Practice Owners

Bethany notices every day the differences between practices led by males and those led by females. While Bethany has avoided doing a podcast on this topic, the impact of gender is simply too strong to ignore. She meets with so many practice owners that are reeling in the aftermath of a gender problem, so she and Dr. Kuba decided to take the plunge today into the murky waters of this subject. Together, they discuss how expectations truly are different for male and female owners, and the reactions of team members most certainly are different. This episode is meant to bring awareness to the impact of gender as well as to encourage female owners/leaders to develop a strategy for leadership that factors in the gender expectations. At the beginning of this episode, Dr. Kuba calls ALL listeners to submit a written OR verbal account of how you took a tip from one of the episodes and used it in your practice. A Matter of Perspective

Today’s episode is a must listen! Bethany tackles a subject that is near and dear to her heart – perspective/vantage points. She preaches an important thought to both her kids and her clients – at times, our perspective could be completely changed with just a simple step to the right or left. She references those mind-blowing photos that would be completely “normal” with taking the photo from a different vantage point (see link below). In this episode, she talks through several team and patient challenges that could be supported and improved with a slightly different vantage point.   Bethany references this link “18 Photos that Aren’t Really What They Seem.” https://www.buzzfeed.com/hanifahrahman/confusing-pictures Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Appreciation Leads to Generosity How to Respond to Angry and Unhappy Patients 📣CATCH JULY CONTENT BEFORE IT IS GONE!! Do you resign to the fact that they are gone and begin to build a replacement plan? All of these questions and more are covered in this week’s episode. Why Training Doesn’t Stick

Why are changes and improvements so hard to implement? Maybe we start strong, but then old habits die hard. Or, maybe we never even started with the improvement. Why? In this episode, Dr. Kuba and Bethany discuss the challenge of implementation. They incorporate several real scenarios of team members and discuss the WHY behind the lack of implementation. In one of the scenarios, an attitude of resistance was the cause, while another scenario proved to be simply a “ceiling” issue. In order to correct a lack of implementation, it is critical that team leaders understand their team’s default so that effective long-term solutions can be made. Previous Episodes Worth Revisiting: Staff Accountability Holding Team Members Accountable 📣June Bonus Content available TODAY!!
