#74 Built on Culture: What My First Two Years with West Point Volleyball Taught Me About Teamwork, Respect, and Leadership.

Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. This episode of the Teach Me to Fish podcast features Matthew Leclair in conversation with members of the West Point Volleyball team. The discussion centers on the parallels between building culture in collegiate sports and leading teams within the U.S. Army.### Key Themes and Insights:•Transitioning to Leadership: The cadets discuss the evolution from being a plebe (freshman), who is mostly responsible for themselves, to assuming leadership roles as they advance (7:40 - 8:14). They emphasize that even at the squad level, having purpose and accountability for others is a crucial developmental step.•Teamwork and Culture: The players describe the importance of being "all in" for the team, balancing the serious nature of military training with the fun of competitive sports (0:05 - 0:45). They highlight the value of mutual respect, honesty, and accountability (0:31 - 0:45).•Mentorship and Role Models: The guests identify mentors like Colonel Schnack and former teammates like Mac Lynch as instrumental in their growth (2:28 - 3:00, 35:00 - 36:00). These figures serve as examples of how to be steady, grounding leaders who can solve problems effectively without being overly negative.•Operational Mentality: The team discusses the adjustment to high-intensity training schedules, noting that the ability to be "ready to go" at a moment's notice—regardless of fatigue—is a trait that bridges the gap between the volleyball court and the battlefield (31:53 - 33:28).### Advice for Future Cadets:•Embrace the Learning Curve: The cadets advise incoming students not to be stressed about not knowing everything when they arrive at Beast (basic training). They suggest viewing it as a fresh start where everyone is learning new things together (2:03 - 2:28).•Take it One Step at a Time: A recurring theme throughout the conversation is the importance of focus. Whether in the army or in sports, they recommend focusing on the immediate goal—one meal, one day, or one practice at a time—to manage long-term stress (3:02 - 3:09, 110:52 - 111:28).The episode concludes with a reflection on the power of stacking positive habits and small victories to build a foundation for long-term success, both as individuals and as leaders (112:43 - 113:01).Why Teach Me to Fish? Catch someone a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed their family for life. Our purpose is to help Leaders better understand what drives People to serve. It comes after years of experience, both failures and successes. Implementing a vision is a whole new challenge. In this conversation with Tyler Patterson, we discuss how the history of the Wolfhounds and his life experiences shaped the process for encoding success and creating a culture that People are proud to be part of.      Tyler is currently the battalion commander of the 2nd Battalion “Wolfhounds,” 27th Infantry, 3rd Mobile Brigade, of the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks.  We hope you enjoy today’s conversation with Tyler Patterson. Key points: •People (0:31-0:46): Focuses on investing in personnel, providing challenging training, and supporting them through both hardships and successes.•Win (0:46-1:04): Emphasizes setting clear objectives and fostering a competitive culture, recognizing that winning is ingrained in the battalion's DNA.•Transform (1:06-1:20): Identifies key areas where the battalion aims to be world-class, such as H2F, lethal small UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) tactical employment, and attack capabilities.•Early Life and Military Journey (7:09-11:00): Patterson grew up in Texas, the middle child in a family of six. His childhood was marked by large family gatherings and a love for sports, especially wrestling, which shaped his high school experience and introduced him to West Point.•West Point Experience (11:00-16:50): Patterson describes his time at West Point, entering in 2001 and experiencing 9/11 just months into his training, which brought a heightened sense of purpose to military service. He walked onto the wrestling team, which provided a crucial support system and outlet.•Branch and Duty Station Selection (16:52-29:20): He explains that his decision to branch infantry was heavily influenced by his closest friends, many of whom he met while training for the Combat Diver Qualification Course (CDQC). He shares a humorous anecdote about how he and a friend managed to secure their desired first duty station in the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii despite initial resistance.•First Deployment to Iraq (2006-2008 Surge) (29:20-35:20): Patterson details his challenging 15-month deployment to Iraq as a platoon leader in Alpha Company, 2-27, during the surge. He describes the intense and kinetic environment in Houija, the major threats faced (snipers, IEDs, rocket launchers), and the significant losses experienced by the Wolfhounds. #55 The Best Decision I’ve made so far. My first year as a West Point Cadet. w/ Ryan Leclair

Let us know what you are think about this episode here. 💬 Text here. Today’s episode is with Ryan Leclair. She will talk about her first year at West Point, how it measured up to her expectations, the first two weeks of “Beast”, what she has learned so far, and what she is looking forward to the most in her second year. She’ll tell a few stories and hint at what’s driving her and her teammates.Key discussion points include:•Expectations vs. Reality (3:32-4:40): Ryan shares that her expectations for West Point were largely met due to prior conversations with family members who attended, but she didn't have many specific expectations, preferring to just be ready to start. She also mentions that Beast, while difficult, was not as bad as people had hyped it up to be.•Beast Barracks (Basic Training) (6:35-8:42): Ryan details the rigorous routine of Beast, including early mornings (4:45 AM), physical training (PT), and briefs. The first half focuses on teaching cadets how to be a cadet, including memorizing rules and getting uniforms, while the second half involves army training like land navigation and FTX (Field Training Exercise). She was surprised that they didn't expect cadets to know anything beforehand, only to try their hardest (9:07-9:16).•Volleyball and Academics (9:26-11:35): Ryan explains how being on the volleyball team meant leaving Beast early for practices and traveling for games, which significantly impacted her ability to attend a full week of classes during the first semester.•End of the First Year (14:00-15:56): The end of the academic year involved term-end exams (finals) and "grad week," which focused on drilling and packing. This period saw a significant slowdown in academic work as everyone prepared for their summer training, transitioning into their roles for the next year.•Field Experiences and Leadership Lessons (16:48-26:07, 27:06-30:07): Ryan recounts a chaotic but fun FTX experience involving a surprise "attack" and defending a house. She learned that summer trainings are primarily for leaders to develop their leadership style (27:33-27:56). A key takeaway from a 101st Airborne Division soldier was the importance of leaders "going to bat for your guys" (28:17-29:02), emphasizing that soldiers will have their leader's back if they know their leader cares about them and the mission.•Advice for Future Leaders and Cadets (35:05-35:50, 39:37-41:17): Ryan shares advice given to her: don't expect to change everything immediately in the army; instead, observe, do your job, and communicate with your soldiers. Her main advice for those considering West Point or military service is that it wilWhy Teach Me to Fish? Catch someone a fish, feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, feed their family for life. Our purpose is to help Leaders better understand what drives People to serve.
