Woof! Meow! There is so much good happening at Fur Kids. This Fish Community Lighthouse shares the story behind Fur Kids plus ways to volunteer, donate and find your new family member. Furkids, headquartered in Georgia, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats and Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for dogs. Furkids also operates one of the only facilities in the Southeast dedicated to the care of FIV-positive cats. The Furkid's mission is to rescue homeless animals, provide them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. Furkids heals the whole animal, physically and emotionally, restoring its health and its spirit. Furkids have rescued and altered more than 55,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 1,000 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, 10 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers, and more than 400 foster homes in the Atlanta area. Tom Edelman shares the details on Atlanta's the 9/11 Memorial Ride September 11, 2021, marks the 20th commemoration of the terrorist attack on America that took the lives of 2,977 people and injured over 6000 others.  Twenty years later, the effects of that horrendous day are still felt as cancers and other diseases continue to take lives while survivors suffer from PTSD and other after-effects of living through the nightmare. To commemorate the day that will remain a part of American history forever, a memorial ride and concert are being organized in Atlanta.  All net proceeds will benefit Tunnel to Towers, the foundation started by Frank Siller to honor his brother, Stephen, a New York Firefighter who fell that day bravely saving the lives of others. Billy Howell has the biggest heart. When he read Katherine's Fish Christmas wish submission sharing she wanted to see her son, her hero, for Christmas Billy said 'let's get that family to their soldier." Their son Will knew he wanted to serve as a Marine at a young age. Still, he was a little homesick. Mom and dad are disabled and their car needed an alignment, tires a tune-up and oil change. Driving from Atlanta to the Marine Base in South Carolina was not affordable for this family. After rejuvenating their car Billy provided a generous gift so this family could drive to see their soldier and spend Christmas together as a family. It was awesome having Jj Hines, the Georgia Pre-K Teacher of the Year read bedtime stories live on the Fish Facebook page. Hines, a pre-K instructor at Barack Obama Elementary School in Atlanta, hopes he can use his own story as an example to his young students. "Now I have the opportunity to inspire others in early childhood. And that's definitely one of my biggest goals," Hines said. "I know how hard it is to be a teacher. This is a sweet call with our Fish Uber Angel Lauren Mulvihill. She changed the life of a veteran after she drove him home from the hospital and noticed that his house was not suitable for anyone to live in. Lauren came up blank when she checked with some area churches and government agencies to see if they could assist Mr. Ronald, so she asked her personal friends on Facebook if they would be willing to help and not only have they refurbished this vets house but her local Home Depot came alongside to help supply materials and appliances. As a Fish Act of Love, we wanted to gift Lauren some flowers and a gift card so she could do something for herself since she has so selflessly helped another.
