The Truth is Counterintuitive Podcast
by Alice by the Palm
"My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways." Whatever makes obvious sense, think twice, as the truth is often counterintuitive. Whatever you hear that is less than mind-blowing or heart-burning, it's very likely not from God. This is a podcast that goes deep in the spiritual realm—to help you discern the voice of God from all other voices and the truth from all half-truths. alicebythepalm.substack.com

"It's not your fault"
My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians is not a delightful letter to read.A year ago, I found comfort in the piercing Word of God:For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves…I was in China when I first read that. I was comforted by the Word of God, yet at the same time, I wished I did not understand 2 Corinthians at a visceral level.I wish—even after all this time—that I were a lukewarm Christian.I wish I could be happy enough just to not go to hell. I wish I weren’t so detached from the world and its lusts. I wish I could settle for a church that is merely a social club.My understanding of Scripture comes from experience.I lived the Scripture; therefore I know. When I first got in touch with the church and Christian community, I thought I had finally found home. That was correct, but not accurate. Soon I discovered that people don’t want God as much as I do. In fact, my desire for Him is an inconvenience to their carnality and lukewarmness. Few people are inspired by my desire; instead, they hold onto the way they live, content with the Jesus they’ve imagined Him to be, having no appetite for the Word—which is God—whom they claim to love.“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1A few weeks ago I posted that podcast on the Vagabond Spirit—maybe I don’t have a vagabond spirit, but I certainly feel like a vagabond wandering through this world that is not my home.Since I was a little child, I knew without wavering that I was from above, from heaven, from somewhere ethereal and eternal. I grew up with a homesickness that no one was able to acknowledge. I grew up watching out the window of my bedroom in the dark, and the lights of the city—down the building or in the distance—became the anchor of my imagination. I waited for someone who could fly to knock on my window and tell me who I truly was—that I was a fairy or a princess of a magical land, and that it was now time for me to go home. And I would be able to fly that very night and disappear into the air. This is why I followed Jesus immediately, unwaveringly, and never looked back. He was the “supernatural” Man I had been waiting to knock on my window. I had waited for His revelation all my life.He is the way, the truth, and the life. Life was hopeless before Him. I was never a passive person—if anything, the opposite. Indeed, I was too competitive and ambitious. But I never truly had hope—And what is hope? It’s not the destination. It’s not that you will get what you want in this life. It’s about eternity. It’s having the peace, the gentle and quiet spirit, knowing that you have eternal life—eternal joy, eternal abundance, eternal love. That’s hope. And I can’t settle for anything less.Everybody seems to accept the fact of death and separation and heartbreak and the loss of loved ones and loneliness and diseases. I never accepted those things—not in my heart, not in my spirit. It was repulsive to me to hear about people getting divorced or breaking up for various, romanticized, bowing-to-the-world reasons.I never accepted death or separation from loved ones, whether by death or by life.It was as if I remembered the culture of heaven—where I came from—and the principles of this world made me sick. I hate romance with tragic endings. I hate divorce with passion. I hate that families no longer make an effort to gather together at least once a year. When Gatsby asks Daisy to tell her husband Tom that she never loved him, Daisy breaks down and says that Gatsby wants too much; she loves Tom and she loves him too.Gatsby is shocked: “You love me…too?”That’s what I’m talking about. I want too much, too. And in fact, the things I want can never be found on earth in man. Only God is able to give me truth and eternity, and that “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”And He fulfilled His promises to me. He never left me nor forsook me. What the enemies meant for evil, He turned for good. What the enemy stole, He restored double. There’s no year the locusts have eaten that God cannot redeem. After all, He made all things in six days, and your life can’t compare to the vastness and intricacy of Creation.I had a good prayer time this week in my sickness. I didn’t pray in tongues, but everything I prayed in English was in the Spirit, and somehow I believe the fever helped. It shuts off your reasoning. It weakens the flesh and humbles the heart. Many people have had a genuine encounter with the Lord and were transformed during their hospitalization. Not that God wants you to be sick, but, just like dreams, you will only listen when you lack the strength to be a busybody, carried away by the things on earth.I met people who drew near to God during their hospitalization and immediately went back to their vomit. I knew people who went back to the hospital many times, humbled, and came out remaining who they were.Is it still repentance when you only repent because your flesh is too weak for you to live in the flesh? If this is you, don’t be surprised that God may allow you to be sick over and over throughout your life until you truly repent. If the hospital is the only place where you will listen, then He will let the devil get you in there.Derek Prince said that people’s faith problem is always about unrepentance. If you truly repent—come to the end of yourself, give up your way, and are humbled enough to obey Him, to live your life for Him—you will not struggle with faith.I’ve been to enough churches across the West to know that most church-goers never truly repented. As a result, their hearts are never changed. They may deceive themselves and others when things go well, but the heart issue will be exposed when trials come, when conflicts happen, when inconveniences exist. And my experience taught me: an impure heart is unable to recognize, let alone appreciate, a pure heart. It takes one to know one. And what you attract into your life is a reflection of your hidden strongholds. You don’t get what you want—you get who you are. And who you are is not who you consciously think you are or who you physically appear to be, but who you subconsciously are.✨You don’t know what you don’t know until someone tells you✨:My book 🧂The Truth is Counterintuitive: Renew your mind and think like Jesus is now available on Amazon. I know most people go for therapy, but I also know that if things aren’t addressed spiritually, they aren’t fully addressed. Psychology is only the daily hand-holding part. The root is in the spirit. In my sickness, I was finally able to slow down—not just in the body but also in the mind. It was a rest, when the ability to overthink is choked and the only thought left in your mind is the one deposited by the Holy Spirit: soothing, enlightening, liberating. Though the body suffers, the soul is freed. I realized I’ve spent too much time bustling around when the things that truly matter are few. I only need to focus on one thing a day, one thing at a time, do it well, try my best.I suffered from chronic anxiety all my life until I was delivered through my first spiritual fast. The anxiety was not mine—it was added unto me by my mother. The nagging voice still rang in my head whenever I was at peace or resting. I fought against her all my life, first face to face, then in the mind and in the spirit. I realized all my problems, troubles, and strongholds originated from her and from our relationship. All the bad decisions I made and the good decisions I failed to make came from her. I saw a glimpse of this after I went to America, but it was not enough to set me free.People who lack a father figure grow up confused and insecure. People who lack a mother figure grow up harsh and tough. Research shows that kids growing up in a single-dad household are just as successful as kids growing up in a complete family, while those raised by single mothers have much higher rates of anti-social behaviors. They used to say, even in the church, that the father is more important. I agree—but reflecting on myself, I would say that you can’t afford to lack either. Maybe your father will teach you discipline and shape your character, and a father may be enough to make you successful in life—but true success is happiness and peace. And I believe a mother gives happiness. A motherless child grows up unhappy, no matter how excellent they are. (Though I dissed the Tate brothers a lot, I see without researching that these two angry boys must have despised their mother.) I finally understood why, even in the happiest hour, I was sad, and why no validations from accomplishments could change the keynote of a motherless soul. You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. But you don’t know what you don’t know—until someone tells you.Until God told me, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) Alice by the Palm is a reader-supported publication. Through His stripes, I am made whole; through His poverty, I am made rich.I understand now, even more, why He died on the cross for our sins, why He loves us.We are never terrible sinners in His eyes—He made us good—but the world, with its lusts and pains, has bent us out of shape. We are too occupied with our own way, crooked from our upbringing and past experiences. I never take “the Blood has washed me clean” as a metaphor—It’s never a metaphor, just as pretty much every verse in the Bible. Now the paradox is:You will never know you were dirty until you’re clean. You will never know you never truly repented until you truly repent. You will never know you were still in bondage until you are truly free.“It’s not your fault.”That’s the Word God has for you today. He loves you—not like what sentimental Christians out there say, that He loves you even though “you’re unworthy”—you are worthy. He knows who He made you to be.What’s next:🎧Podcast🕯️Poetry👑Kingdom of God♡Like and share are generosity free of charge♡ This is a public episode. Thank You for Your sacrifice. And today I come before You to repent of my sin, my iniquity, whether that is done by me or my ancestor, whether that is brought upon me through sexual immorality. Lord.No matter where it came from. Father, I come to You, and I repent of my sin. I repent of the grudge in my heart against my brothers, my sisters. I repent of the sexual sin I committed in the past. I repent for my ancestor of their iniquity, whether that be murder or jealousy, whether that be their dabbling in the occult. And Father, I come here to ask You to cleanse me of the blood of Jesus, because I believe in the Lord who is my Savior. I believe that His blood will cleanse me from all sins, that there is no sin in this world that cannot be cleansed by the blood of Jesus.Father God, I’m here repenting of my ways. I renounce my ways in life. I renounce the way I think. And I’m asking You to renew my mind. I’m asking You to fix and rewire my messed-up mind. I don’t want to be trapped in the way I think, going nowhere—two steps forward, three steps backward. I don’t want this anymore. I’m sick of it. I’m desperate. I need You. Father, I don’t ever want to go out from Your presence. If I ever did this again, if I ever go out from Your presence, if I ever dabble with sins, if I ever flirt with sin, if I run to evil, stop me, Father! Hit me to the ground. Do whatever You can to stop me. I don’t want to lose Your presence. I don’t want to lose Your Holy Spirit.I want to be blessed. I want to be blessed by the mouth of God, and Father God, today I come to You, and I repent of my sin that has brought this curse upon my head. I repent of my sin of my ancestor from where I inherited this curse of that vagabond spirit, the curse of Cain. And Father God, I ask You to deliver me from this vagabond spirit, and I ask You to break this curse. Set me free, Father, in the name of Jesus. Father, by the blood of Jesus, cleanse me. In the name of Jesus, set me free.Father God, lead me to a place. Lead me to my promised land. Lead me to the land of my inheritance. And plant me there. I want to take deep root and bear fruits and multiply. And my good work shall shine before men and glorify You in Heaven. Father, take this double-minded spirit out from me. Purify my heart and let Your Word take deep root in me. Let Your Word take deep root in me. Father God, I don’t ever want to feel dry in my spirit. I don’t ever want to be stagnant in life ever again. My Lord Jesus, have mercy on me. Have mercy on me, Father. Take out my heart of stone and give me a new heart. Give me a heart that wants nothing You don’t want for me, that only wants You and wants everything You want for me. Let Your will be my will. Let me abide in You and Your Word abide in me. Let every desire in my heart be Your desire for me. Father God, stop me from this folly of wandering around, having no place to rest. Deliver me, Lord. Deliver me.Father God, I surrender and I confess that Your way is always better. And I’m asking You to forgive me of my itchy ears, of my stiff neck, of my disobedience. Father, comfort me with Your rod and staff if I ever do this again. I don’t ever want to go away from You. I don’t want to. I don’t want to be this vagabond anymore.I want to be fruitful and multiply. I want to subdue the earth and replenish it. I want to occupy it till You come, Father God. I want my life to be Your glory. I want my life to be Your glory. I want Your name to be known through me. I want my name to be known because of You.Lord Jesus, thank You for Your blood. I renounce all connection or covenant or association I made unintentionally or intentionally with the kingdom of darkness. I cut it off in the name of Jesus. Father God, bless me so no one can curse whom You have blessed.Bless me, Father God. I won’t let go until You bless me. Bless me, Lord. I can’t live without Your blessing. I can’t live without Your Word. I can’t live out of Your presence, Father God. Lord, let all my concerns be about You and Your Kingdom. And in Jesus’ mighty name, thank You. Amen. Brainwash Yourself With Wisdom — Reading Proverbs 1-10 (NASB)
A young man lacking sense,Passing through the street near her corner; And he takes the way to her house,In the twilight, in the evening,In the middle of the night and in the darkness. And behold, a woman comes to meet him,Dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart. She is boisterous and rebellious,Her feet do not remain at home; She is now in the streets, now in the squares,And lurks by every corner. So she seizes him and kisses himAnd with a brazen face she says to him:“I was due to offer peace offerings;Today I have paid my vows.“Therefore I have come out to meet you,To seek your presence earnestly, and I have found you.“I have spread my couch with coverings,With colored linens of Egypt.“I have sprinkled my bedWith myrrh, aloes and cinnamon.“Come, let us drink our fill of love until morning;Let us delight ourselves with caresses.“For my husband is not at home,He has gone on a long journey; He has taken a bag of money with him,At the full moon he will come home.”With her many persuasions she entices him; With her flattering lips she seduces him.Suddenly he follows herAs an ox goes to the slaughter,Or as one in fetters to the discipline of a fool,Until an arrow pierces through his liver; As a bird hastens to the snare,So he does not know that it will cost him his life.Proverbs 7:7-23 This is a public episode. The Cost of Lust Is Destiny
Sins of tongues are a heart problem. “For out of the abundance of his heart he speaks.” Luke 6:45Double-mindedness is also a heart problem. “Purify your heart, you double-minded.” James 4:8But a carnal mind is associated with disobedience in offering your body as a living sacrifice to God.You crucify your flesh to strengthen your spirit. You offer your body to God to receive a renewed mind, so that you will know the will of God, which is good, acceptable, and perfect. (Romans 12:2)If you can’t repent of your sin of lust—by repentance, I mean making a decision to cut it out—you will NEVER discover the best that God has reserved for you.Don’t quote scripture piece by piece like a rigid nerd—quote it as you absorb the whole Bible and the Word becomes yours. Subscribe to make that the first step:“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7“Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power. Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.” 1 Corinthians 6:13-15🔥What next: This is a public episode. Are You Trying to "Help" God to Fulfill His Word?

Wear Makeup—Like You are Going Somewhere
I can count the days I put on makeup in a year.Say I go out each week, then I would wear makeup four times a month, which amounts to 48 times a year.Culturally speaking, Chinese women don’t wear makeup that much, whereas Japanese and Korean go the extreme opposite. So why I didn’t believe in makeup.I believe in effortlessness.Effortlessness means extra efforts. To achieve effortlessness, I must hit the gym five times a week. I must sleep on time and wake up on time. I mustn’t eat desserts more than twice a week. I avoid crackers like an alcoholic avoids a sip of alcohol, due to my addiction to crackers, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. Half of my stomach is filled with fruits each day, mostly berries. I don’t buy processed, microwavable food. I’ve stopped eating deli meats like sausages. I no longer eat pork or rice (and being Chinese, seriously, can you imagine). And this is how I budget—I buy $10 a pack of pasture-raised eggs rather than a chunk of fodder-fed, hormone-injected steak. My lifestyle is a program. It takes, initially, upbringing (no one in my extended family eats desserts other than fruits), then self-discipline (my parents don’t go as far as I do in health), and then habit, and now, nature. It becomes my nature to run that program, do that “extra work” (which appears extra to others) so as to make it effortless—Then I don’t have to wear makeup.I was wrong, although my theory made perfect sense—Your skillful makeup really doesn’t matter when your skin is bad, your hair is thin, and your body is out of shape. One of the most life-changing thing I learned from Jesus is: Always take a step back from things that make perfect sense.Always, think, counterintuitively.Makeup is deeper than appearance.Like beauty, makeup functions under a mysterious system that God built for His creations—and what you really want to discover is that system. But if you don’t engage with the surface, you will never uncover the system beneath. That system is a realm, an energy, a frequency—it’s magnetic; it’s spiritual. Are any of these in the Bible?Yes, they are. There was a chosen woman, a literal queen, who was “born for such a time as this”: Queen Esther.(Check out my most popular post: Cher and Disney Princess Syndrome—What to Expect from Motherless Girls)In this article:* 👑What makes Esther a queen* 💄The “system” behind wearing makeup * 🥝Fruits must be seen to be qualified as “fruits.” You believe God can do it. You just don’t believe He will do it for you—don’t EVER settle with that mindset:👑What makes Esther a queenEsther was among a group of young women who were selected to be concubines. Before they were allowed to come before the king, they went through a beauty prep for 12 MONTHS—“six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics.” Esther 2:12That is a whole year of preparation.Every young woman would be given anything she asked for before going to the palace in the evening. In the morning, she would be sent to another harem and would stay there until the king summoned her by name. When it was Esther’s turn, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the eunuch in charge of the harem, suggested, and Esther “won the favor of everyone who saw her” in the palace. This is what I read from this part of the story:* You don’t go to the king without preparation.* If you want God’s best, want God’s best.* Be teachable. * Be “favorable.”I want to elaborate on the second point, “If you want God’s best, want God’s best.”We don’t know what other young women took to the palace with them, but here’s a possibility:These young women might never be summoned by the king again, nor could they marry other men. They would be basically imprisoned in the “used-woman” harem until death. So either they earn the king’s favor—this is Plan A—or they take whatever they can while they have the chance—this is Plan B.It’s not hard to assume what these young women might ask for:jewelry, gold, perfume, fineries, luxury cosmetics—all temporary gains.Esther, however, set aside Plan B (which was most likely to happen) to bet on Plan A.Why?Because Plan B is not a plan at all. It leads to despair. She had to make Plan A work, no matter how slim the chance. That’s the mindset of a follower of Jesus—your so-called “Plan B,” aka “just in case God doesn’t deliver me,” is not a plan at all. Your faith in Christ has to work.It may seem like you can fall back on self-reliance—no, you have to bet on God. What works for the sons of the world will no longer work for you the moment you are born again. The Bible is a compass for legacy building.Esther didn’t just want some nice stuff. Holding onto some nice stuff in prison until death? No thanks. She aimed for the throne. She went after a legacy. To achieve that goal, she was teachable, meaning she was humble enough to seek wise counsel. She was also wise enough to ask the right person, Hegai, who knew the king well. What are the temporary gains?Hustles. Bluffs. Instant gratifications. Money from paychecks. Money from dishonesty. Money that sacrifices health.Yes, you read that right—money from paychecks. It’s stable, it’s certain, so you count on it and no longer risk building any assets. But it’s temporary—your children’s children don’t get inheritance. You yourself are merely making ends meet.“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous.” Proverbs 13:22Making ends meet is the most dangerous zone to be in—once people get into this zone, they rarely get out. They become frogs swimming in slowly heated water. If making ends meet gives you more security than the provision of God, you don’t need the provisions of God. You are happily and forever stuck in that zone of “making ends meet.”“It is the blessing of the Lord that makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow to it.”Inspirations✨ and enlightenments🌅 will come to you each week by a click now:💄The “system” behind wearing makeup To clarify, I still believe that the backstage work I did so as to NOT wear makeup is more important than wearing makeup. But why did I suddenly change my view on makeup?Because I changed my view of living in eternity. To live in eternity, you only need to think about TODAY.The focus on today frees me from anxiety, worries, regrets, and self-pity.Anxiety and worry occur when you shift your focus to “tomorrow,” while regret and self-pity happen when you shift your focus to “yesterday.”Reflect on the mistakes you made and plan for the future, but keep your body, soul, and spirit operating in the realm of today. The moment you wake up to a new day, forget about the regret of yesterday, snap off the anxiety for tomorrow, go to God, praise and give thanks, confess, and ask for guidance.Today is the big day.I stretch, curl my hair, wear makeup, make my bed, squeeze half a lemon into water, make coffee, put on one of my favorite outfits, spray perfume, wear comfortable heels even though I work from home, and then come before God, read, pray, write, and plan for today—just today.Alice by the Palm is a reader-supported publication. If you’re able and willing, consider:* Tipping ☕️ (various payment options available)* Shopping at Alice’s 🐣fledgling store* Upgrading for more values(click for details👇🏻), ONLY $3.32/monthWith nowhere to go physically, I have somewhere to live for.If you grow up in a household that has the best of everything on shelves and in storage—fine china, fine clothing, fine perfume, fine oil, fine linen, tablecloths, luxury candles, plush towels, fine jewelry, watches, etc.—Unlearn your upbringing. You’re now in the House of God.If you want a better car, a better house, a better job, or a better spouse (I’m not suggesting divorce here)—First, think about if you deserve a better of anything.Do I make the best of what I have? Do I give thanks to the Lord only verbally, while slacking in my stewardship over what He’s given me? Have I outgrown my job? Have I outgrown my neighbors? Does my car align with my current social life? (For instance, if the people you hang out with drive Toyotas, why do you need a Maserati?) Do I improve myself to deserve a better spouse? Am I the right person to recognize the right person or the right community? To put it in non-Christian terms, your frequency might not match your ambition.Second, visualize the place you aim to be.If women there all wear makeup, then you should be wearing it now.If people in that place all eat healthy and work out hard, you should do that now.If people there live in mansions, you can at least make your rental house match up with its tidiness. If they don’t drink tap water, don’t drink tap water. If they all run some sort of business, start a business now—research like you already got the starting fund.If they all have published a book, start writing one now.If they all have a loving family, start building one now—live like you’re building a legacy of upbringing, tradition, and wealth. The list could go on forever, and your list might be different from this example. This is the system I mentioned from the beginning: live your vision now.You can’t expect wealth when you have no desire to learn about finance. You can’t expect health as you lie on the couch eating Cheetos. You can’t ask for trust when you can’t even hold yourself accountable. You can’t win respect without fruits. You can’t get a happy marriage and godly children when you live in sexual sins, live for selfish ambitions, and dread responsibility.ATTENTION:If the place you aim to be contradicts biblical principles and people who are already there live in sin—take a U-turn and repent.Don’t sow weeds expecting to reap wheat. Don’t ask God for a stone, believing it’s bread.🥝Fruits must be seen to be qualified as “fruits”Nothing you can see is shallow.Beauty is not shallow. A fit, healthy body is not shallow. Good skin is not shallow. Good teeth are not shallow. A refreshing smell is not shallow. Makeup is not shallow. A fancy car is not shallow. A clean room is not shallow. An organized kitchen is not shallow. A wrinkle-free shirt is not shallow. All of these are fruits. Fruits must be seen to be qualified as “fruits.”All fruits take time and effort—physically, mentally, spiritually, each day, for months, years, even decades—to be seen.I shifted my mindset from working on the back to obtain effortlessness to working on the surface that will stir up the deep waters beneath. Both are important. Both are hard to maintain, just in different ways.Maybe you’re my opposite—maybe the Law of Attraction or self-help gurus have taught you all the surface work so you can live like you’re already there;now I encourage you to swap with me: you start focusing on all the back work, all the discipline and consistency behind the scenes, and I’ll do some surface work.It has to be done from both levels.Don’t approach the king without consistent preparation.Don’t be distracted by temporary gains—aim for the throne.Be teachable. Be humble. Be wise. Be favorable. What to Read Next: This is a public episode. ABOUT THIS SHOW
"My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways." Whatever makes obvious sense, think twice, as the truth is often counterintuitive. Whatever you hear that is less than mind-blowing or heart-burning, it's very likely not from God. This is a podcast that goes deep in the spiritual realm—to help you discern the voice of God from all other voices and the truth from all half-truths. alicebythepalm.substack.com
