True Roots

What does it really mean to be a Christian man? Is it about working harder, checking all the boxes, and keeping it all together? Or is it something deeper—something that requires surrender and obedience to Jesus?Welcome to the True Roots Podcast. This isn't about quick fixes or surface-level faith. It's about stepping into the fight for your soul, your family, and your purpose—and discovering that the way we fight isn't through striving, but through surrendering everything to Christ. Everything.I'm Andy Harris. A few years ago, my life fell apart. I was divorced, 351 pounds, drowning in shame, and numbing myself with food, porn, and alcohol. I thought I was too far gone. But Jesus met me in my brokenness and showed me that true freedom comes when you stop trying to control everything and fully surrender to Him.And I'm joined by my co-host, Dan Cox, a husband, father of five, and business owner who's story is different than mine, but has led him to the same place of surrender and obe

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 32: 'Two Shall Become One Flesh'

Matthew 19:6 (ESV) "So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." In this episode of True Roots Identity, Dan and Andrew dive into the marriage covenant and God's design for marriage through the lens of their personal stories. Coming from two very different experiences—one marked by divorce and the other by years of marriage and raising a family—they explore what it means to uphold God's view of marriage while navigating real-life challenges, failures, and growth. This conversation speaks honestly about covenant, commitment, and the weight of what God has joined together, while also pointing to the hope of redemption and restoration in Christ. Whether you've been married for decades, are newly married, or are walking through the pain of divorce, this episode is for you. Our prayer is that you would walk away with a deeper understanding of God's heart for marriage—and a firmer identity rooted in Him above all else. Check out our PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 31: 'How Many Times Do I Forgive Someone?'

In this episode Dan and Andrew discuss Matthew 18:21-22 (ESV) ‭‭"Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times." Peter thought he was giving a generous amount of forgiveness and Jesus blows it out of the water with His response.  Jesus understood what unforgiveness does to the soul and how bitterness, anger, fear, and control can take root.  Dan and Andrew discuss the process of forgiveness as well and how many times it takes 77 times + to truly forgive someone.  It's not a one time act, but a continual surrender and choice to forgive and asking His Spirit for help in forgivining.  Check out the PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 30: 'Guard Against ALL Forms of Greed'

In this episode Dan and Andrew talk about: Luke 12:15 (AMP): ‭‭"Then He said to them, "Watch out and guard yourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of nor is it derived from his possessions." Yes, Dan and Andrew discuss finances, but this passage has much more in it than just financial wisdom. It's about all forms of greed. No matter what we have or receive from Jesus, if the thing becomes the place we find joy or purpose, we will leave empty. Because if we have Jesus, we already have everything...we've gained everything. Check out the episode and then download the PDF worksheet here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 29: 'Do Not Despise These Little Ones'

In this episode, Dan and Andrew discuss: Matthew 18:10 (ESV) "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." This is a great discussion about remembering where Jesus rescued us from and not becoming like a pharisee in how we see new Christ followers.  Dan and Andrew give antidotes from their own lives about how this has played out and what Jesus has taught them in it.  Check it out and download the PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 28: 'Deny Yourself'

Deny yourself? Wait, what? Did Jesus really say that? 'Cause that certainly isn't what's taught in a world and country that's all about us. But here's the reality, the way to fullness of life, is to surrender it all to Jesus and deny ourselves, pick up our cross (die to self) and follow Him. This is what Dan and Andy discuss in this current episode. What does it profit us to gain the whole world, but lose our soul? (also God's word), answer, it doesn't profit us at all to gain the world and lose our soul...it kills us. We can keep chasing things in life and choosing ourselves, but it will always leave us empty...want full life? Give your life up to Jesus fully. Trust me, it's worth anything that it costs. He is worth everything. In this episode Dan and Andy discuss the scripture below: Matthew 16:24 (ESV) "Then Jesus told his disciples, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.'"  Check out the PDF worksheet here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 27: 'Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

In this episode, Dan and Andrew discuss Matthew 16:6 (ESV): "Jesus said to them, 'Watch out and be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'" Check out the PDF that goes with this episode here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 26: Take Up His Yoke and Find Rest

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 11:29 (ESV): "Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." This episode discusses that rest is not taking a nap (it can be), but often it is in movement.  It is in the yoke of Jesus Christ, moving with Him and not against Him.  Dan uses an analogy of a dog going on a walk and being pulled along, and another dog racing out in front and being choked and pulled back.  Both would not be in the yoke.  When we walk in His yoke, with Him, the yoke is easy, even when there is work involved and comes from a place of rest and not trying to earn rest Check out the PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 25: Fear God, Not Man

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 9:38 (ESV): "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." This passage is critical to walking in freedom with Jesus. If we fear man and not God, we will constantly live in fear, which causes us to try and control everything around us, or run from it. If we truly Fear God, it allows us to live in freedom, boldness, and courage as we walk with Him straight towards fear. He wants to conquer fear in us, because truly, if we fear God, we don't have to fear anything else. Check out the PDF worksheet that goes with the podcast here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 24: Be Wise as Serpents, Innocent as Doves

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 9:38 (ESV): "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." They discuss being known by our fruit and what true fruit looks like. They also discuss truth and if anything contradicts, adds to, or takes away from Biblical truth, it isn't truth. This is an important episode that also discusses sheep in wolves clothing and different cults, such as: mormonism, and how it may look like a sheep, but in reality is a disguised wolf that's distorting biblical truth and who Jesus fully is/was: God and man. Check our our PDF here and go through the questions to engage deeper!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 23: Pray Earnestly for Laborers to go into the Harvest

In this episode, Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 9:38 (ESV):  "Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." In this short episode they discuss how important and powerful prayer is, lets not underestimate His power!  Secondly, they discuss that the urgency of praying for laborers 'cause the harvest is ripe!  We are called to plant and water and He will bring the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6) Love this quick episode.  Check out the PDF that goes with this episode here!

  12. 42

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 22: Beware of False Prophets

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 7:15 ESV "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." They discuss how important it is to know the truth (the Bible) to be able to recognize false teaching.  They also briefly discuss mormonism and Matthew 7:20 - "Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."  And how their 'fruit' can sometimes look 'good', but it's not true fruit, because what they believe doesn't align with God's word, so the fruit of mormonism takes us away from Jesus and away from truth...therefore it is false and not true.  This brought up how a wolf in sheeps clothing looks like a sheep, but underneath is a wolf that will destroy your soul.  Mormonism was a great lesson in false teachings that are growing rapidly in our day and time.  Check out the episode and download the PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 21: Don't Throw Your Pearls to Pigs

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss: Matthew 7:6 ESV "Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you." They discuss what can happen when we share the vulnerable, heart level pearls that Jesus is giving us with people who will trample it, or squelch the Spirit, who is moving in us.  This doesn't mean we don't share Jesus and love others, but it does mean that the pearls He gives us and wants to grow in us we treasure and share with people who will encourage and fan into flame what God is revealing to us.  Check out the PDF that goes with the episode here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 20: Ask, Seek, Knock

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 7:7 ESV:  "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." This was a fun discussion about the Holy Spirt and how generous Jesus is with giving us what we need.  They also discuss how we literally cannot do what Jesus asks in our own strength.  It is impossible and we need to ask Him for His Spirit...and He wants us to and loves to give us His Spirit's strength in our weakness...His power is perfect in our weakness.  PERFECT!  Check on the PDF Here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 20: What has Jesus been teaching you lately?

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 19: Do Not Judge

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 7:1-2 ESV: "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you." They also discuss Matthew 5:7 and removing the plank from our own eye, before looking at the speck in someone elses. This is an episode on ownership and letting the Lord examine us, and create in us a clean heart...rather than looking at the offenses of others. Check it out! Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 18: Seek First the Kingdom

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 6:33 (ESV): "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." They discuss Mary and Martha, and what it looks like to be at Jesus's feet, while living out in action our faith in Christ. This episode reminds us to shift our focus and keep first things first, rather than trying to 'do all the things'. Just seek Him and be at His feet and let everything flow from there. 18. 36

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 17: Do Not Worry

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 6:25 (ESV) "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" They share antidotes from their lives about anxiety and depression and what worry can do to our lives and how to cast our cares on Jesus. They share about Jesus being the answer to healing from anxiety and depression and that everything else are tools that He uses. T hey are all good and incredible tools, but the true healing comes from being the presence of Jesus. Give it a listen and download the PDF worksheet, link here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 16: Store up treasures in Heaven

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 6:19-20 (ESV)? "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven." This is an episode that all of us can relate to.  Are we thinking and believing eternally or temporarily?   When we think and act in the temporary, it can make it easy to think God isn't with us, or for us, or loves us...but it's because we're storing up treasures in things that are temporary and not in Him.  This doesn't always mean we are 'doing bad things' or even running after bad things, but just treasuring the temporary over the eternal. Dan and Andy discuss marriage, kids, etc. as they share about how to shepherd these areas while still not holding onto them as the ultimate thing.  Check out the PDF that goes with this episode here.

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 15: Give, Pray, and Fast...In Secret

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew the 6:1: "Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven." They discuss having a focus on eternal rewards vs. temporary ones, and the temptation, that we can all struggle with, of seeking man's approval or recognition over God's. Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 14: Be Perfect, as Your Heavenly Father is Perfect

In this episode Dan Cox and Andy Harris discuss: Matthew 5:48 (ESV): "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." They discuss this with an emphasis on:  Hebrews 10:14: "For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified." Jesus calls us to perfection, knowing that we cannot acheive this by our own power, and this is the call of Jesus with any of His commandments...He knows that the only way to become perfect, or walk in the commands He gives, is by coming to Him, knowing Him, and allowing Him to empower us, through His Holy Spirit dwelling in us, to walk out what He's called us to. Jesus gives impossible commands, because with Christ all things are possible...and without Him, it is unachievable...it literally cannot happen.  And this is the crux of this command...in order to become perfect, we must walk in His finished work, by His power, through relationship with Him...it's not by earning or striving for perfection, but by surrender and allowing His Spirit, to give us His Power in our weaknesses, so we can walk the path of sanctification.  His power, our surrender. This is a great episode, check it out and download the PDF worksheet that goes with it here

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 13: Love Your Enemies, Part 2: Pray for those who persecute you

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 5:44, in part 2 of: Love your enemies. This episode focuses on praying for those who persecute us. When we follow Jesus, this will happen. Its a biblical truth that Jesus talks about. We will have opposition. But Jesus doesn't ask us to fight this opposition with anger, frustration, crafty words, etc., it doesn't mean we won't feel these things as arrows are thrown our way, but God calls us to pray...and prayer changes our hearts...it changes our perspective...and it allows us to forgive and to love as Jesus does, through His power...and gives God the opportunity to move and takes it out of our hands. This is not an easy ask, but it's a freeing one. To pray and let God shape and move in the ways He needs to, rather than taking vengeance into our own hands. It's different than how the world says to handle it...and again, when we pray for people we don't want to, God changes us and moves in ways we often cannot see. Check out the PDF in our here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 12: Love Your Enemies Part 1: Go the Extra Mile

In this episode (Part 1 of 2): Dan and Andy Matthew 5:39b-41 ESV: "...if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles." Dan and Andy discuss letting go of our right to defend ourselves and leaving it in Jesus's hands...not out of vengeance, but out of faith and trust in God.  They talk about Romans 12:21 as well:  'Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.' This verse, done in action, creates a pause in others.  It's compelling, because it's the response of Jesus and not the response of worldly wisdom.  Check out the PDF here that shares a story about a coke bottle incident that reflects overcoming evil with good!

  24. 30

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 11: Let Your Yes Be Yes and Your No Be No

In this episode, Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 5:37: "Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil." This is a great episode about our words matching our actions, and how important that is in building trust with people and being who God has called us to be. Check it out and download the PDF here!

  25. 29

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 10: Do Not Lust, Embrace Surrender and Radical Vulnerability

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 5:28-30: "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell." They get into the topic (off air at the end of the 'official' episode) of surrender and wanting God more than our sin...and how surrender and giving Him everything is truly the way out of lust. However, in that discussion they also discuss how God will reveal patterns and doesn't want us to fear sex, which has typically been the church's approach to getting rid of lust (lust management), which doesn't work long term. Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 9: Be Reconciled

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 5:24 (ESV) "Leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." Be sure to check out the PDF this week, link here! The question this week is a great one to ponder and ask Jesus about!

  27. 27

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 8: God's Law and Jesus's Fulfillment

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 5:17-19: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." This is a discussion that can easily get into the weeds and become legalistic, but that wasn't Jesus's point either. He's not calling us to a Pharisee type of faith, but is explaining that He wasn't getting rid of His standards, but that He came to fulfill everything, and now we look to Him to see what way to walk. Since Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, we look to how He lived to see how we need to walk/live. Check out the PDF worksheet that goes with this episode here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 7: Pick up your cross and follow me

In this episode, guest host Matt Patterson and Andy Harris discuss Luke 9:23: 'And He said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.' Jesus is consistently after our whole heart, all of it. Not just pieces of it, He wants it all...but He also gives an invitation in this surrender: Freedom, Joy, Peace, Love, etc. T his process, at times, can be incredibly painful and difficult (the cross is/was excruciatingly painful), but it's in that death to self, that true life comes in Christ. Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 4: Follow me and I will make you fishers of men

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss Matthew 4:19. Verses are below: Matthew 4:19 (ESV) "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Mark 10:28-30 - "Peter began to say to him, 'See, we have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.'" This week's PDF has us Count the cost of following Jesus. This isn't a pros and cons list, but counting what it costs us when we choose to follow Him fully vs. what it costs us when we don't. This is a powerful exercise with Jesus. Check out the PDF here!

Yearlong Discipleship, Episode 1: The Greatest Commandment

In the 1st week of the True Roots Discipleship Course, Dan and Andy discuss Jesus's 1st and greatest commandment from Matthew 22:37-38, which says: 'And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.' They share what this looks like to walk out in our lives and how Jesus reorients our whole lives with this command. Dan shares an analogy about the lunch tray, and how many Christians, look at Jesus as a space on the lunch tray...however, He is the whole tray, and what holds everything together in our lives. To truly love Him fully, we have to give Him everything we have on our tray and surrender it over to Him. This weeks question asks exactly that: 'What's on your tray?' Spend 5-10 minutes asking the Holy Spirit to reveal what's on your tray and then sit with Jesus and surrender them over to Him in prayer, saying: 'Jesus, I give you _________ and surrender it all to you, your will be done.' As we begin to give Him everything on our tray, we will begin to know Him in deeper ways, as we walk in deeper unity with Him. This can be challenging and difficult, but it brings greater peace and joy as we walk with Him through it and let Him be Lord over all. Episode 12: True Roots - Who we believe God is shapes how we interpret what He does

In this episode Dan and Andy discuss how our beliefs about who God is influence how we see Him moving in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Do we believe He is good? Do we believe He is just? Do we believe He is loving? Do we believe He is in control? Do we believe He is the God of all comfort? Do we believe He is merciful? These are just a few of the characteristics of God, but do we believe this about Him? In this episode Andy Harris and Dan Cox discuss walking into the uncomfortable with Jesus.   They discuss that the call isn't just to be with Him in the private moments and be filled up with Him, but to also go out with Him, to learn to trust Him and share Him, to learn to step into the uncomfortable.  This is a rich discussion that reveals that the depth of trust and faith in Jesus comes from stepping out and walking in faith, not in just spending time with Him and getting filled up.  We must be with Him and go with Him.  That is the walk with Jesus.  Thank you for listening!   Join our True Roots Free Community Here
