He is now a hurricane specialist for The Weather Channel. Bryan Norcross, welcome to WeatherBrains! Also joining us for tonight’s episode is Bob Ryan. Bob Ryan is lead meteorologist on the 11 PM News on ABC7/WJLA-TV and heads digital weather development at ABC7/WJLA-TV. He has served the Washington area as a broadcast meteorologist for more than 30 years. Ryan began his career in the atmospheric sciences as an associate researcher in the Physics Section with Arthur D. Little Inc. in Cambridge, MA, where he conducted research in cloud physics. He holds a BS degree in Physics and M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the University at Albany.

    Tonight's Guest WeatherBrain is Patrick Marsh, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oklahoma's School of Meteorology. He earned a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Physics (cum laude) from the University of Arkansas in 2005 and a Masters of Science in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 2007. In addition to working on his doctorate, Patrick serves as the National Severe Storms Laboratory Liaison to the Hazardous Weather Testbed where his research interests lie in working with operational forecasters, data mining, data visualization, and all things high-impact weather.

    Tonight's guest WeatherBrain is Gray Stream. Gray is the Board Chairman of the National Hurricane Museum and Science Center. Gray joins us in Lake Charles with Jimmy and Keith Trahan, who are survivors of Hurricane Audrey. Jimmy and Keith are stars in the documentary about Hurricane Audrey. Our guest panelist this week is Brian Neudorff. Brian is the chief meteorologist at KMVT in Southern Idaho. A graduate of Purdue University, Brian also has earned his Certificate of Broadcast Meteorology and is certified by the American Meteorological Association.

    If you tell tonight's Guest WeatherBrain not to have a COW, he would tell you he already has. He is an Iowa State Cyclone. He received his Meteorology degree from there in 2001. He has since been working for the Department of Meteorology. One of his main roles has been collecting environment data that supports agricultural activities in the Hawkeye State. Joining us as Guest WeatherBrain #2 is Wade Witmer, Deputy Director of FEMA IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert and Warning System). His division runs the alerts aggregator that feeds WEA. He’s also had extensive discussions with the wireless carriers and the FCC.

    This week's guest WeatherBrain is Dr. Jeremy Rogers. He was working the night of the April 27th, 2011 tornado outbreak at the closest hospital to the tornado in western Jefferson County. He is the Medical Director at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in the Emergency Department and is the current President of the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Alabama.

    WeatherBrains 322: Seventeen Inches of Yellow Crud

    Tonight's Guest WeatherBrain is a legend. He needs no introduction to any person who has read the text of more than a couple of severe weather watches written since 1975. Jack Hales recently retired after 46 years of Federal service including 36 years at the Storm Prediction center, formerly the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. During his 36 consecutive years as a SELS/SPC Lead Forecaster, Jack issued over 5500 tornado and severe thunderstorm watches nationwide since 1975. Jack was the presented the Department of Commerce Silver Medal along with six other meteorologists who collaborated in the forecast of the April 2, 1982, outbreak that successfully used the terms "High Risk" and "Particularly Dangerous Situation" (PDS Watch) for the first time. Jack was born in Long Beach, CA, and like many current meteorologists became intensely interested in weather during grad school and followed up on his interested with a 46 year career. His first job with the Weather Bureau at the Seattle-Tacoma airport from 1967 to 1969. Joining us as a guest panelist for this show is Tim Hedrick, Chief Meteorologist at Local 12, WKRC, CBS Cincinnati, OH.

He has been with UPS Airlines for over 21 years and was tasked with starting up the airlines Meteorology Department 18 years ago. Randy Baker represents UPS at industry forums, manages weather support systems, and has led the use of aircraft to deliver automated high-resolution aircraft data to meteorologists on the ground. He is currently working on the evaluation of 25 water vapor sensors on UPS 757 aircraft.

    Gary Carter has served as Director for the Office of Hydrologic Development, National Weather Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), since November, 2000. He is responsible for a group of 80 Government and contract employees engaged in research and development activities to advance the National Weather Service mission to forecast the water in America’s rivers and streams. In November, 2006, Mr. Carter was selected to lead the NOAA Priority Area Task Team on Integrated Water Resource Services. Currently, he is the Water Forecasting Program Manager for NOAA.

    Scott Unger is a forecaster at the NWS in Birmingham. After a stint in the Air Force, he got the weather bug and became an intern at Birmingham. He was promoted to a journeyman forecaster position in 2007 and has assumed responsibility as the focal point for the upcoming dual polarization radar upgrade. The Birmingham WSR-88D is scheduled to have the upgrade completed during February. He joins us tonight to talk about that process, the radar products, and some other interesting topics.s

Dr. Harold Brooks leads the Modeling, Observation, and Analysis Team at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, Norman, OK. Originally from St. Louis, MO, Dr. Brooks has served in a variety of positions primarily in the area of meteorological research since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in Atmospheric Sciences in 1990. He has formally and informally be associated with over 100 publications including several books.

Since 1996, Greg has performed as a severe weather outlook forecaster, fire weather forecaster, mesoscale meteorologist and lead forecaster at the SPC.

Charlie is a forecaster at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Pittsburgh, PA. Up next as our second guest is John Ferree. John is the National Weather Service's Severe Storms Services Leader. In this role, John leads efforts to improve severe weather forecasting and warning performance, facilitates promising research into operations, and identifies emerging concepts and techniques to disseminate throughout all NWS operational units. John was the co-chair of the NOAA/NSF sponsored Tornado Symposium in Norman, Oklahoma last week, and also served as program chair for the American Meteorological Society's Warnings and Communications Conference this past summer.

So we have no idea where the spinning table will take us!! I'm sure there will be detours and other side trips! We do have a guest panelist, Michael Moss, a storm chaser in Indiana and a weather enthusiast.

Before founding WDT, he was employed with the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) for 18 years, the last 7 as Assistant Director.

    Our Guest WeatherBrain for this show started out like many of us with a real fascination for weather from early childhood. Chris Parker even began actively forecasting the weather each day starting in 3rd grade at age 8 years old. In high school, he broadcast widely-listened-to forecasts on WBSL, an FM radio station in Western Massachusetts, then studied Meteorology for 2 years at Lyndon State College in Vermont.

    Our guest WeatherBrain is Mike Brown, Associate Professor of Meteorology & Climatology at Mississippi State University. Mike is a climatologist/meteorologist with interest in land-surface-atmosphere interactions. Mike has looked at the impact of heterogeneous surfaces upon formation regions of convection in Illinois and Mississippi. Mike has also studied severe local storms in the Mid-Atlantic region in an attempt to identify processes generated at the Earth's surface that augment the mesoscale atmosphere creating an environment of enhanced instability and shear.

    Tonight's Guest WeatherBrain is James Ladue, an educator at the Warning Decision Training Branch in Norman, OK. He trains meteorologists on how to use radar and satellite data so they may produce more accurate forecasts and warnings. He develops new techniques for combining satellite and radar data. He was one of the really big brains that were in Birmingham last week for the National Weather Association Annual Meeting. He has a life long fascination with weather and sky, and he is doing something about it. His undergraduate work in meteorology was done at SUNY Oswego and his Masters is from the University of Oklahoma. He is also into canoeing, hiking, skiing, storm chasing, and photography.
