WaveMaker Takeover w/ Meghan Foulkes + DD Richards (5/19/2023)
Join Claudia Diaz, Parisha Kinsey, and Renée Roqué on Friday, 5/19, as they chat with MoxiWorks' Meghan Foulkes and one of our Retreat Keynote Speakers, DD Richards. We are continuing our WaveMaker Takeover as we introduce you to some women you will meet, greet, and connect with at the 2023 WomanUP!® Retreat. Welcome! Let's start at the beginning… YOU! Please introduce yourself! Share who you are, where you are, and WHY you love doing what you do! What was the first business you started/owned? What is the life or leadership advice you give most often? DD: Definitely to always be learning and growing and open to new things. No matter how long we've been in business or leadership, there are always new ideas and way to grow. We can always improve and be seeking out ways to improve. I read a quote recently that said, When you stop learning, your slide into mediocrity has begun. The other piece of advice is to listen to your gut, that inside voice that is always right. Work on developing that voice. It will help keep you pointed in the right direction.) Meghan: Know your "why". I think people often want to get into leadership because it's the next step for them in their career or they don't want to do outbound sales, but it is so important to know your why and that may change over your career. Knowing your "why" will keep you motivated intrinsically. Additionally surrounding yourself with mentors and executing on their advice really helped me in my career. WaveMaker Takeover w/ Pam Blair, Joanne Bazarian, Sandra Miller, and Danielle Lazier (4/28/2023)
Join Pam Blair, Sandra Miller, and Joanne Bazarian on Friday, 4/28, as they chat with fellow WomanUP!® Retreat attendee, Danielle Lazier, Team Leader and Founder of Vivre Real Estate. She is one of the first real estate bloggers and has some excellent advice to share about standing up for your convictions and what she calls "tactical empathy." We are continuing our WaveMaker Takeover as we introduce you to some of the women you will meet, greet, and connect with at the 2023 WomanUP!® Retreat. Listen in as they share their stories, wisdom, and advice for the weeks leading up to the event in Oceanside Welcome to the show! Please introduce yourself.. Q1: Danielle, I am excited to introduce you to the community. Let's start at the beginning… We would love to hear about your leadership journey. Please introduce yourself and share the key steps on your path that led you to become the version of you here with us today! Q2: What was the first business you started/owned? Unknown to me at the time, I started either the first, or one of the first, real estate blogs, in 2002 at the age of 23, called "SFhotlist". At the time, the term "blog" had not yet entered the lexicon. There was no Curbed, SocketSite, Zillow, etc. SFhotlist.com was a one page HTML website with a graphic image of a blond girl standing in front of a real estate sign (my first client had drawn it for me and my colleague's husband did the HTML page). What I did was go around to other agent's listings and then go and write about them. I wrote about the lifestyle surrounding the property, more than than the property itself. Just a few sentences. No photos. And a disclaimer that I was not the listing agent and that the information was from the MLS. Then, I posted the sentences on Craigslist. Lo and behold, I attracted clients, mostly young tech professionals, and built my business post by post. Since then, online content creation has remained a key part of my business. Shine a Light on Her Interview with Rachel Adams Lee (3/10/2023)
Join us for a "Shine A Light on Her" with a leader so many love to follow, Rachel Adams Lee! We are circling UP for a conversation with Rachel about her leadership and life journey. Like many of us, Rachel wears many hats and is known for being a BOSS in each of them! Welcome. Help our community get to know you. Tell us about your leadership journey… Rachel: I started my business door knocking $200 a week and doing three open house is a week. I didn't sell any homes for the first four months. However, I was able to sell 39 homes my first year, and then 109, and then 123. In my third year in real estate, I had hit top 1000 agents in the country. While everything looked amazing on paper, I actually had gone through a really traumatic divorce, I was putting everybody else's needs in front of my own, and I definitely did not have any work life balance. I went on a journey of self growth, and learned how to set boundaries with my clients, and Learn to love myself. I also decided that I wanted to pour into social media and so I created a business model around that! Last year I received 131 referrals just through social media. I am super passionate about helping my agents on my team, and other realtors around the country, build a life by design, and I launched a coaching company to do that. Coffee & Conversations with Leslie, Zina Hall, Danielle Fontes, and Pat Heller
Join us for February's addition of Coffee & Conversations with Leslie - "Let's Get down to Business; Thriving in Uncertainty"! In this session, we will revisit three women we interviewed in 2020 for the "Leading Through Crisis" series. Joining Leslie: Zina Hall (Broker/Owner - Hall & Hall Associations) Pat Heller (Senior Mng. Director of Southern California - Compass) and Danielle Fontes (Real Estate Broker - MGR Real Estate) With 20/20 hindsight, how do you assess your initial thoughts about approaching the market in the spring of 2020? Overly pessimistic or optimistic? Going back in time, how did it feel to be navigating the real estate market as the country entered a period of heightened uncertainty. Zina Hall: I was truly pessimistic and anxious because I opened my Brokerage the previous year and was concerned about earning power for not me but my team as well. I had the charge to get them trained and performing quickly. Since I had the sales history in the industry, I ended up training them on my live transactions who proved to be a win-win. Danielle Fontes: I wish I was much more aggressive in the 2020 market. The clients that I helped purchase all have done very well thanks to the increase in property values and low inventory. I wish I really coached and pushed more to make that jump at that time. They would have reaped the rewards and would not be struggling now with the higher prices and higher rates. Pat Heller: My initial thoughts and focus when it all shut down was on figuring how to lead hundreds of agents through this time of such uncertainly for all. I remember wanting to carefully "hold on to everyone" to make sure they stated positive and as connected as possible. I was determined to learn zoom in a day and held company meetings every Monday and Friday mornings and hen held zoom classes on Wednesdays on keeping in honesty and positive mindset. I was also trying to pull myself away from the news 24/7 and getting myself into a new bio rhythm and routine. I realized pretty quickly how any of us went through covid was how we went through any transition in life but this one was really unsettling and scary for all. I probably was over optimistic as I really always believe we will be ok if we stay aware we are ok in "the current moment". Continue reading here.

Coffee & Conversations with Katie Lance
Welcome to the December edition of Coffee & Conversations. Thank you for joining us for what I promise will be a most illuminating conversation with one of my heroes - Katie Lance. Most of you know that "active listening" is my mission – to raise awareness of the power of taking the time to pay attention in a conversation, to sit back and receive what the speaker is expressing without interrupting, without finishing sentences for them, without hijacking the conversation altogether. This is a thing. There's a new movie out, "Ticket to Paradise", a rom-com starring Julia Roberts and Geroge Clooney as divorced parents with a contentious relationship. At one point in the middle of a heated exchange Julia has a great line: "Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours?". That sums it up pretty well. I have often thought about how this translates to the online world. How do we ensure that our conversations on social media are the best they can be? Who better to ask than the social media guru herself, Katie Lance. I first got to know Katie on stage at Inman and was impressed with both her message and her delivery. I devoured her book, #getsocialsmart as I know many of you did. It was a game-changer, expanding our understanding of the potential of social media and how to harness it for our business and our personal lives. Eventually I invited Katie to come down to LA and meet with my staff for a day – exploring what our social strategy should look like and how to implement it. A day with Katie was a revelation and I have been a fangirl ever since. Continue reading here.

Coffee & Conversations – Ready for Your Next New Season? with Gina Piper, Piper Moretti & Kendyl Young
We have a very special show for you focused on growing your network within the context of giving back to your community. Joining Leslie are Gina Piper, Piper Moretti, and Kendyl Young. You know that knowing feeling, when there's a calling for you to make a change? Whether it's voluntary or not, we all have experienced inflection points in our lives. This conversation will help us see that making the leap into this next calling shows us how the future can be FULL of possibilities. At our wonderful WomanUp! Conference at the end of August I was honored to facilitate a conversation with three remarkable women from our industry who have, in different ways, recently "turned a page". It is a topic I have spent a lot of time thinking about as well and whatever next chapter you might be contemplating on whatever time frame, I think you will find the insights shared here helpful. Welcome Gina, Piper and Kendy and thank you for joining us. For today's conversation I want to start with the first topic from the last panel, where you each told us about the big change or changes you have made in your professional life. This way everyone who is listening who may not have attended will know what you made happen and why. Gina: Moving to Maui Piper: Crypto! Kendyl: I've sold homes for 36 years and obsessed with the real estate industry for most of that time. Unlike many, I've never done anything else. I launched ADU DIGGS as a charming side hustle, but it has become a new obsession. ADU DIGGS is my main focus. Next, having reviewed our prior conversation there were several themes that came up more than once that I would like to explore further. First off – the imposter syndrome. Do you know it? Have you had it? What did it feel like? Have you been able to "kill the beast" and if so, how? Advice for our community? Kendyl: welcome the the under current of my daily life. I vascilate between "I've never done anything original or barn burning-ly special" and "there are a lot of people more successful/wealthier/bigger than I am". The obviously conclusion is that I don't know how to make a successful business in a completely new industry. I mean, like, it's OBviouse, right? Another frequent comment had to do with becoming comfortable with "not knowing." Was that a challenge for you? How did you overcome it? Was it essential to starting a new chapter? Kendyl: I am more comfortable with not knowing then doing the same expert things over and over. I am easily bored so… new? Yeah, bring it, baby. New chapters are where I feel alive, but I really like my hubs- so new business, hell yeah! Next – a sensitive topic to be sure – MONEY! Describe your relationship with money before and after – if that applies. What had to change about how you approached money for your new career to take off. Kendyl: I decided to go all in on ADU DIGGS when I decided to believe our financial future was secure. I am not sure I could have committed if I hadn't. But, I don't think my attitude toward money has changed. I still don't like to spend it and I am never certain more of it will show up. This means I am still unlikely to spend big ahead of revenue. I probably need to change that attitude to grow fast… Finally , the challenge of taking care of myself first is perhaps even harder when transitioning to a new life. What does that look like for you and how successful have you been at doing this? How about some advice for anyone who struggles with setting boundaries, especially with themselves. Kendyl: I remind myself, sometimes hourly, that I am "retired" and doing the fun things. The biggest shift is reminding myself that it is ok to fill empty spaces in my calendar with fun activities instead of work. Or… to just have empty spaces. In the past non-work spaces on the calendar were a sign of failure! I am not doing very well with the empty thing, but I am doing more of "the things" and happy with my progress. Are you all ready for this Virtual CircleUP! Business Planning Session? Let's do this! Guest Experts: Christine George, Co-Founder, Post & Beam Creative Melissa Sofia, Founder, The Avenue Home Collective Bertina Power, Engel & Völkers Chicago Session Description: Have you ever asked yourself "What exactly is the purpose of a business plan and why are business plans so important?" Maybe you've wanted to write one, but aren't sure where to start or the traditional business planning model is not for you! What is the biggest business challenge YOU want to overcome in 2023? We kick off this session with business advice from some of the most brilliant leaders in the industry. Our guests brought their business challenges to the table, and we did our best to solve them together with some of the greatest minds and biggest hearts in our community! Simply put - a business plan is a document that details your business concept and strategy for growth. Maybe you've wanted to write one, but aren't sure where to start, or the traditional business planning model is not for you… or maybe you're simply uninspired about 2023 and need an attitude + vision boost! This session starts with sage business planning advice from some of the most brilliant leaders in the industry. Then we will opened it up to a live Q&A session. Christine George is the moderator AND she has agreed to share her wisdom alongside Bertina Power and Melissa Sofia… Christine George: Knowing Your Numbers + Strengths Know your numbers. They inform your goals and marketing strategy. For example, Can you increase your repeat/referral business? Can you increase your average sale price? Did you notice your target audience has shifted, what's the opportunity there? Focus on your strengths and delegate the things you don't like or aren't good at. If you hate the paperwork, hire a transaction coordinator. Chances are he/she LOVES it and will make sure it gets done and is done correctly. Connect with Christine here: https://postandbeamcreative.com Melissa Sofia: Paying Attention Pay attention to the moments you are in… most decisions are "inconsequential". Don't stress about inconsequential moments Connect with Melissa here: https://www.instagram.com/melknows Bertina Power: Allocate Your Time Wisely When we plan for success we must take a true assessment of how much time we have and what we do with that time. Only 168 Hours in a week. Let's consider the feasibility of your goals for 2023. Connect with Bertina here: www.BertinaPower.com Questions from the audience: How can a business stand out without a large social media presence? How long do you track your numbers to identify your niche(s)? Hi everyone plans and goals are priorities and follow them. I just got my license from State of Washington (NMLS in loans). I like to know the best way to find clients or referral to increase my sales. I am in California. My agents keep questioning if they need a business plan or not. Would you help me craft a response that really helps them understand the importance of putting their vision on paper? One of the consistent questions I get from agents is around defining their ideal clients - how do you advise others to do this? What are the key elements of a real estate brokerage business plan? Where do I start? How do I define and share what makes me different in my plan? There are so many brokerages in my area - I feel lost.
