This week's question comes from a teenager who feels depressed ever since graduating from high school. This teen feels like there's little hope for the future, and thus is not eating and feels the urge to start cutting. What should he/she do? This week's Youth Questions video is different than what we usually do. Someone asks us if reading romance novels will affect her future marriage and bother her future husband. We answer the question and address the expectations that it sets up for girls to have of guys, romance, and relationships, whether you're married or dating. Soap Operas fall into this same category of women entering into fantasies about relationships, emotions, and men similarly to how men enter into unfair comparisons and fantasies about women sexually in pornography. Romance novels, soap operas, and porn all have similar affects on relationships, expectations, comparisons of the opposite sex, and a twisted view on each other. This week we answer a teenager's question about why God would let a close family member die while bad and sinful people continue to live. Does God not care? Is he not powerful enough to stop it? Does he not really love us? Does he even exist in the first place? These are all good and honest questions that we answer. We all go through hard times in life, but ultimately we can know that God is in control, that things happen for a reason, and that just because something bad happens doesn't mean that his heart isn't breaking as much as ours is. He wants us to go to him with those struggles and wrestling through those faith issues together. What can you do if your brother or sister gets all the attention, is better in school, a star athlete, and is popular in school and you're not? That's a loaded question and it's and extremely difficult question to answer in a short video without offending someone. Some will wish we focused more on the sin issue while others will applaud that we didn't. Regardless, everyone will pigeon hole us into either the pro-gay or anti-gay camps, probably the former because we didn't specifically identify ourselves with the latter. Let's all be pro-people that God loves and created before jumping straight to sin issues, which we all all have. Stress is something we all deal with, probably throughout most of our lives. Learning to handle it appropriately at a young age is very important. While you're a teenager, there's pressure from school, parents, friends, and work that can stress you out. When you grow up, a lot of those same things can continue to be stressful. Cutting and suicide can be pretty intimidating things to deal with when your friend tells you she's struggling. In this video several youth workers and one teenager give their advice about how to best help your friend when they come to you with this kind of information.
