En 2022 las cifras que estamos viendo de trastornos mentales o suicidios son muy preocupantes. Según este artículo publicado en Boston Review: «Décadas de investigación biológica no han mejorado el diagnóstico ni el tratamiento. Deberíamos mirar a la sociedad, no al cerebro.» Y este podcast, en el que he seleccionado las partes relevantes del artículo, es una invitación a reflexionar sobre lo que llamamos «enfermedad» mental. La conclusión del artículo es que enfocar el tratamiento y diagnóstico de la salud mental en lo biológico solo ha tenido un impacto positivo, en el marketing de los psicofármacos. Aunque el tratamiento de la salud mental no es igual en todo el mundo, si es muy parecido el tratamiento que se está haciendo del sufrimiento humano. El sufrimiento humano en sus multiples expresiones implica una mezcla de síntomas tan grande que es lógicamente imposible que este bajo el control de un neurotransmisor. El sufrimiento y sus diversos síntomas excitatorios e inhibitorios no son una enfermedad. Son un desajuste psicosocial y el cerebro haciendo su trabajo. El estado de animo no es una enfermedad sino la respuesta de in individuo y su relación con la vida. Y como explica el artículo, con el DSM-III se paso a lo descriptivo, pensando que un síntoma va en cadena con otros. Pero eso es la vida misma. La salud mental debe ser estudiada de forma biopsicosocial. Entiendo que es un episodio denso, pero espero que igualmente os ayude a aprender.
