500k kids per day targeted by predators on Meta

from Epiphany · host Vanessa Denha Garmo

500,000 kids per DAY are targeted by sexual predators on Instagram and Facebook. Let that fact sink in. Stadiums and stadiums could be filled with these children. If we could truly picture it, we would recognize this as a national emergency. Worse? Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, knows this fact. The stat came from one of the company’s own researchers, who raised it to the attention of the company’s leadership in an internal email. Yet still, Meta refuses to meaningfully address the problem.Instead, they pour millions of dollars—money that they could be spending on making their products safer—into trying to shut down child protection legislation. If that makes you angry ... well, we’re right there with you. This year, NCOSE is doubling down on our campaigns for Meta accountability. Haley McNamara is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Programs at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. She leads joint campaigns within areas of legislation, litigation, and corporate advocacy regarding the full web of sexual exploitation issues. Her advocacy work has contributed to policy improvements in social media, online advertising, retail, and hotel industries. She has advocated at the United Nations, led international coalition campaigns, presented to Danish, Croatian, Colombian and Rwandan government officials, and more. Haley is a former member of the Washington DC Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect. This Committee advises DC Mayor Muriel Bowser on the multi-faceted continuum of the District of Columbia’s child welfare services, including prevention, early intervention, treatment, and sources of permanency.
