Nel 1963 l'etnologo cubano Miguel Barnet incontra Esteban Montejo, un uomo di 104 anni: "uno schiavo fuggiasco, un cimarrón... in quel primo incontro parlammo molto". Da questo incontro nasce e viene pubblicato nel 1966 il libro “Autobiografia di uno schiavo”, sulla sua vita alla ricerca della libertà dalla schiavitù. Nel 1968 lo scrittore Hans Magnus Enzensberger e il compositore Hans Werner Henze si recano a Cuba e incontrano Miguel Barnet. Nasce così El Cimarrón, un nuovo lavoro del compositore per voce maschile, flauto, chitarra e percussioni, che resterà uno dei lavori più particolari della storia musicale europea del XX secolo. Uno straordinario racconto in musica della vicenda di Esteban Montejo.In questa puntata di “Juke Box 900”, la chitarrista milanese Elena Casoli, ci accompagna alla guida dell’ascolto di questa opera.
