Ep35 - Why Do Students Sit on the Floor?

from Outside Japanese Class with Taichi · host TAICHI

Students sitting on the floor with cup noodles and drinks. At first, it may look a little strange — but maybe there is something warm hidden in that small scene.==Japanese and English scripts==みなさんは、外で地面や床に座ることがありますか。 Do you ever sit on the ground or on the floor outside? In Singapore, I sometimes see an interesting scene. Inside shopping malls, or in the walkway to a station, students are sitting on the floor. They are sitting with their friends. Some are eating cup noodles. Some are drinking juice. They sit in a circle and talk happily. Sometimes they laugh loudly. Now that I am an adult, I quickly thought this.「床、汚くないかな。 “Isn’t the floor dirty? Is it okay?” But the students did not seem to care very much. But when I thought about it carefully, I may have been like that too in the past. When I was a student, I think I also sat on the school floor normally. For example, there was preparation for a school festival. In the classroom, we cut cardboard and painted things. At that time, I think we worked while sitting on the floor, not on chairs. Even if our clothes got a little dirty, we did not care much. It was the same when we played outside. We ran a lot, and when we got tired, we just sat down. We did not think much about whether the ground was clean or not. When we were children, many places in the world felt like places where we could sit. On stairs, in corridors, or at the edge of a sports ground, we did not care much. When I think about it now, it is a little funny. When we become adults, we start thinking about many things. Our clothes might get dirty. The floor might be dirty. Other people might see us. So we cannot sit down so easily. But when we were children or students, I feel we were freer. If we had friends, a little food, and a little drink, that was enough to have fun. We did not have much money. We could not go to cafés every week. But just sitting on the floor and talking with friends was enough fun. Even one bottle of juice or one cup of noodles could become a fun time. When I saw students in Singapore, I remembered that. At first, I thought, “Isn’t the floor dirty?” But soon after that, another feeling also came to me.「ああ、青春だな」と。“Ah, this is youth.” Gathering with friends, talking about nothing special, and laughing loudly. When I remember it, I think it was a very important time. We laughed seriously, even at really silly things. A friend’s funny face. A small mistake. A joke we did not really understand. We laughed so much at those things that our stomachs hurt. If there are not many places to gather and chat on the way home, sitting in a place in a shopping mall where they do not bother others may not be so bad. Sitting with friends, drinking juice, and talking happily. That seems like a very nice time. What was your youth like?
