Episode 007: "Finding The RIGHT People.

from Learn For 2 Podcast · host Brandon DeVere

"Finding The Right People” In the real estate industry it is common to think, “The more, the better”. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t necessarily true. Right now you can walk down the street and ask any broker to work for them, and their answer will likely be… “Yes”. Without even knowing much about you. The idea is just to grow numbers. Which could be a short-term solution. But the challenge with just taking anyone, is that you won’t find out if they are a “fit” for your overall plan until they start and it becomes too late. Now you are spending your time putting out fires and dealing with turnover, as your business becomes a revolving door of agents coming and going. Not good for a sustainable long-term solution. For instance, I am looking for problem-solvers, go-getters, and do-ers. I’m looking for people that will at least “Google it”, before they come and ask me. This is not saying that I don’t want to teach people, it is quite the opposite. I want to teach people that they can’t learn on their own because they don’t know where to look. I want to expand on what they already know. I don’t want to spend time showing them how to make a “landing page”. You can literally go to YouTube and learn how to make one in 20 minutes. I want to teach them How to use that landing page effectively. Since I am passionate about finding the right people, I have implemented an application process, so that only those who are committed to growth, will make it to the next round. This is something I learned from what I believe to be the top hospitality company in the world, The Four Seasons. Years ago I worked for them, and I will never forget the day I dropped off my application. (Yes, it was back before online applications) When I dropped it off at HR, they asked me to wait in the lobby for a moment. This struck me odd, as most places I had ever dropped an application off at, I just left. A few minutes later they called my name and brought me to a room, where the conducted an interview on the spot. When that was done, they asked me to take a seat in the lobby again. They took me back again for another interview, this time, with a different person. I believe I had one more interview that day before they scheduled me for the following week for a final interview, in which I was offered the job. They wanted to “catch me off-guard” and see how I reacted to it. I wasn’t prepared for an interview so I didn’t have a chance to rehearse any answers.  I interviewed with multiple people so they could tell how I interacted with different personalities.  Their philosophy is that they can teach a skill to anyone with the right attitude, but they can’t teach an attitude to someone with the right skill. And again, that is why I have an application process in place. Just the process of going through the application will start to sort out those that are just interested from those that are committed. And… I’m looking for those that are committed. I believe that in order to survive the “Long Game”, you’ll need more that “just anyone. You’ll need to surround yourself with… The RIGHT People.
