Episode 016: "Karma"

from Learn For 2 Podcast · host Brandon DeVere

“Karma”  One thing I know is that I believe in karma.  But to what extent and how it works is something I am still a little unclear on.  I’m not sure if it is some outside force maintaining the balance of the world, or just a sum of our actions.  Meaning that, if I am constantly treating people like garbage and always “taking” while never “giving”, enough people will notice this and treat me as I treat others. Therefore, never offer me a helping hand or opportunity.  On the flip side, if people notice that I am always doing things for others and treating them respectfully, chances are, they will treat me the same and want good things for me.  I tend to believe it has more to do with the latter.  Another thing I know is, that if you have listened to me for any amount of time, you will know that I have a goal to attract the RIGHT people to my team.  That is why when I see people “making their own luck” I can’t help but get excited.  Recently, a former colleague of mine Brian Wiltshire, was laid-off during the MGM layoffs a couple months ago that affected over 1,000 families.  It wasn’t that Brian got laid-off that had me rooting for him. It was how he responded to it.  As long as I have known Brian, he has always found himself in a good mood, regardless of the situation. Always singing, dancing, and telling jokes.  Making it impossible for those around him to be in anything BUT a good mood.  When he learned that he was being “let go”, it was no different.  Immediately after he found out that he didn’t have a job anymore, he posted a quote on social media that sums up his attitude. He said…  “There are no tough times, only tough people”.  Meaning, regardless of the situation, he was going to come out on top, and it was in HIS control.  This right here, is a special mindset.  A mindset of someone that I am rooting for.  There was no “why me?” Or the use of the acronym FML.  He took a punch, shook it off, and went to work solving the problem.  As I watched through social media over the next few weeks, he kept us up to date on any job fairs or interviews he was going on and was eventually rewarded for his efforts by landing a new position    He didn’t say anything negative about his former employer, in fact, he thanked them publicly for the opportunity. And when he started his new job, he shared his gratitude for the new opportunity.  Congrats Brian on the new job.  I have been rooting for you and will continue to do so.  I would love to have 100 of you on my team.  In terms of success, the question isn’t "will he succeed?” It is "how much will he succeed?”   It’s stories like this that make me believe that you can create your own luck, create your own success, and create your own…  Karma
