Episode #156: Processing the Mary Cain Story

from Running Rogue

For this week, I had to hit pause on my previously planned topic and spend time discussing the Mary Cain story, which you can learn about here: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/07/opinion/nike-running-mary-cain.html I don't have all the answers, but I hope you don't mind me taking the time to process this incredibly brave and heartbreaking story from Mary.  In the podcast, my discussion centers on two areas: 1. How can we advocate for those like Mary who speak out against wrongdoing? 2. How can we think about body image and bodyweight in running in a better way? I know that I still have so much to learn to better do my part as an athlete and coach for a better future in our sport, so please do share your thoughts to my email - [email protected]. As a side note: I don't discuss it directly but I believe in and advocate for a full, independent investigation into the culture of the Oregon Project and what amounts to child abuse in this case.

Guests will include both former and current believers in a variety of conspiracy theories, as well as debunkers, skeptics, and the investigators of those theories. I’m Mick West, a debunker. I wrote the book Escaping the Rabbit Hole – How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories using Facts, Logic, and Respect. This book came from my experiences running Metabunk – a debunking forum. Over the years I realized simply presenting corrections to people is not enough. We need effective communication, and we can’t do that if we don’t listen to and talk with each other. I’m hoping this podcast will help bridge that gap. Explicit Nerd on the Street Kaori Akari and Jason Rayn Welcome to our block! Explicit Running In Slow Motion with Sidney & Tamra Smith You Hear Good Things podcast network Comedian Sidney Smith and his wife Tamra — a sharp-witted educator with a soft spot for flowers — team up to navigate life, goals, and culture at their own hilarious, at times, in-depth pace. They call it “running in slow motion,” and that pretty much sums up the vibe. This isn’t a marriage podcast (their union ranks a generous 5 out of 10, after all), but it is a refreshingly honest, smart, and funny take on relationships, ambition, and everyday chaos. From real talk to pop culture and unexpected interviews, it’s a joyride of relatable moments and laugh-out-loud observations. Explicit
