First Frames

Send us Fan Mail In this episode of Get Doc’d, we dive into First Frames, a quietly powerful documentary by Ilie Mitaru that takes us to the heart of displaced childhoods in Turkey. At the center is Serbest Salih, a Syrian refugee and photographer, whose mobile darkroom becomes a vessel for education, expression, and healing in communities still reeling from displacement and devastating earthquakes. But what truly sets First Frames apart is its perspective—it’s the children who hold the camera, ask the questions, and frame their realities. We explore how the film redefines documentary storytelling by giving voice and visual agency to the young. Their photographs, their words, and their boundless imagination offer an unfiltered look into lives shaped by conflict, but not defined by it. Join us as we discuss how First Frames captures the resilience, humor, and creativity of childhood, even in the most uncertain of times—and how photography becomes both a tool for memory and a spark for the future.
