How To Clarify Who And What Makes You Anxious
from Intelligent Intoxication · host Terri Bradway
In The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward, author Britt Frank offers four “challenges” to undertake in order to discern when you feel anxious in the presence of another person: CHALLENGE #1: On one side of the paper list all of the stressful people with whom you spend time. On the other side of the paper write: “My real feelings about him/her/them are… “ Then write: “I have a right to my feelings.” CHALLENGE #2: Make a list of all of the stressful tasks on your plate. On the bottom of the page write: “It makes sense that I’m feeling anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed. I’ll feel better if I tackle BLANK first.” CHALLENGE #3: Make a list of anything else that is causing you stress that is not a task or person (finances/work/health/etc.). At the bottom of the page write: “Here are 5 things I can do in less than 5 minutes to feel 5% better.” CHALLENGE #4: “My anxiety makes sense. Anyone in my situation would feel anxious. I may not even understand it right now, but I’m not crazy.” I invite you to consider these questions: Which of these challenges resonated most deeply with you? Which one challenge are you willing to experiment with today?
