How to Have A Tough Conversation With Adult Children
from Intelligent Intoxication · host Terri Bradway
Navigating Difficult Conversations Difficult conversations don't have to turn into battles. A simple framework can help you communicate clearly while staying connected. Share Your Observations Start with what you've noticed, not accusations. "I've noticed that when we have differing opinions, you tend to raise your voice or yell." Address the Impact Explain how their behavior affects you. "When you yell, I feel uncomfortable and notice myself starting to shut down." Get Curious Invite them to share their experience. "Does that make sense to you? Can you help me understand what's going on for you in those moments?" Make a Request Clearly state what you'd like to happen moving forward. "Going forward, if you're not able to discuss something calmly, please let me know. If things become heated, we'll take a break and circle back when we can both discuss it calmly." Most Important: Before initiating any difficult conversation, check in with your own nervous system. If you still feel an urgent need to address it immediately, there's a good chance you haven't fully processed your emotions yet. Regulate first. Then communicate.
