H.I. McDunnough (Nic Cage) is a recovering robbery addict who is trying to settle down with the no-nonsense cop who takes his mugshots, Ed (Holly Hunter). They run into a major problem when Ed's womb turns out to be a rocky place where H.I.'s seed can find no purchase. Meanwhile, the locally famous Arizona family has been blessed five times over. Thinking it might be more than they can handle, the McDunnough's help themselves to Nathan Jr. to raise as their own.
