The Feast of Pentecost

from Epiphany · host Vanessa Denha Garmo

The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek word pentekoste, meaning “fiftieth” (as derived from the root word pente, which means five). Accordingly, the Christian Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter. It is the feast that marks the end of the Easter season — and the official beginning of the Church.A quick search for Pentecost’s definition indicates it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, but what is Pentecost’s meaning in our lives today? It is certainly an important commemoration and anniversary of that glorious historical event. It is also a celebration of our present reality as followers of Christ, signifying that believers today are still led by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who anointed the early fathers of the Church nearly 2,000 years ago.Steve Ray is a convert to the Catholic faith and a popular author, speaker, and pilgrimage leader. He has been to the Holy Land exploring, filming, and leading thousands of pilgrims.
