When 'Nice' gets in the way
from Parent Pause · host Kim McCabe
What if “be kind” is the very reason your daughter struggles with confidence? If that makes you pause - good. This week my three audios are focusing on something few of us were ever taught to question: the Nice Girl script. Many of us grew up with the same job description:Smile. Share. Don’t make a fuss. And now we’re layering “Be confident!” on top of that… creating a tangle of mixed messages, especially for our girls:Be bold - but not too bold.Speak up - but don’t upset anyone.Be kind - even when you’re uncomfortable. No wonder so many girls feel torn in half.In this episode, I talk about the quiet harm that happens when kindness gets confused with compliance - when being liked becomes more important than being honest. I share the story of a girl who told me, “I can’t say no because it feels mean,” and why she’s far from alone.Real confidence doesn’t grow from being agreeable. It grows when a girl learns she can be truthful and still belong. That she can set a boundary and still be kind. That saying “no” can be an act of courage, self-respect, and sometimes even friendship. If we want to raise children who feel whole, not hollow, we need to stop raising “nice” ones and start raising true ones.Have a listen, and let’s rethink what confidence really means.
