Yr Hen Iaith (Lefel A) - Branwen ferch Llŷr
from Yr Hen Iaith · host Mimosa Cymru
Cawn hwyl yn y bennod hon wrth drafod ‘Ail Gainc y Mabinogi’, sef y chwedl ‘Branwen ferch Llŷr’. Rydym ni’n ystyried nifer o agweddau ar y stori gyffrous hon, gan ofyn cwestiynau diddorol am ei pherthynas â’r gymdeithas ganoloesol yr oedd yn perthyn iddi. Nodwn ei bod yn ei hanfod yn stori am briodas frenhinol, ac awgrymwn ei bod yn bosib ei darllen fel testun radicalaidd sy’n mynd i’r afael â’r wedd honno ar gymdeithas mewn modd beirniadol. Craffwn hefyd ar ymdriniaeth y chwedl â rhyfel a heddwch, gan nodi arwyddocâd y rhyfel apocalyptaidd sy’n lladd y rhan fwyaf o boblogaeth Iwerddon a’r rhan fwyaf o’r fyddin fawr sy’n croesi’r môr i achub Branwen. ** Branwen daughter of Llŷr We have a great time in this episode while discussing ‘The Second Branch of the Mabinogi’, namely the tale of ‘Branwen daughter of Llŷr’. We consider a number of things about this exciting story, asking interesting questions about its relationship with the medieval society to which it belonged. We note that it is in essence a story about a royal marriage, and we suggest that it’s possible to read it as a radical text which addresses this aspect of society in a critical fashion. We also examine the tale’s treatment of war and peace, noting the significance of the apocalyptical war which kills most of the population of Ireland and most of the great army which crossed the sea to save Branwen.
