97. Foundations: Ignite Your Transformation
Brace yourself for a practical framework for initiating personal transformation. By understanding the pull of our lower brain, consciously choosing a direction, creating actionable plans, and embracing imperfect action, we can move towards a more engaged, purposeful, and fulfilling life characterized by Action, Belief, and Connection. Key Concepts and ThemesThe Model: Understanding the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and actions.Primal Tension (Lower Brain): The brain's tendency towards comfort, safety, and energy conservation, leading to apathy, boredom, and criticism.Higher Brain/Self: The part of us that urges growth, choice, and taking control of our lives.Agency: The principle of making our own choices and the impact those choices have.Choosing a Star: Identifying a specific goal or direction to focus on.The Importance of Action: Recognizing that action precedes inspiration and drives progress.Do Goals: Tangible, measurable, and time-bound actions that contribute to a larger goal.Harvesting Time: Consciously choosing how to spend our time to pursue meaningful endeavors. The 5-Second Rule: A technique to overcome procrastination by acting quickly after a decision.B Minus Work: The concept that imperfect action is better than perfect inaction.Transformation: The process of moving from apathy, boredom, and criticism to action, belief, and connection. The lower brain primarily functions to keep us in the comfortable zone, ensure safety, and conserve energy. If unchecked, this can lead to negative outcomes such as apathy (lack of motivation), boredom (lack of engagement), and criticism (negative judgment of self and others)."Picking a star" refers to identifying a specific goal or direction to focus your energy and attention. This distinction helps the brain understand what is important, enabling focused effort and progress towards that chosen objective. The podcast asserts that action creates inspiration, rather than the other way around. By initiating movement and engaging in the desired activity, ideas spark and develop, providing the motivation and clarity needed to continue. Waiting for inspiration to strike before acting is often ineffective."Do goals" are tangible actions that can be observed and measured, and they have a specific timeframe for completion. Making goals this way provides clarity, structure, and a sense of progress as each action is completed, propelling one towards the larger objective. The "5-second rule" involves counting down from five (5-4-3-2-1) and then immediately taking action on a decision. This technique interrupts the brain's tendency to overthink and procrastinate, allowing for swift initiation of desired behaviors. For example, using the rule to get out of bed immediately when the alarm goes off."B minus work" suggests that it is better to produce imperfect work and take action than to wait for a state of perceived perfection, which often leads to inaction. Embracing imperfection allows for progress and learning, as opposed to being paralyzed by the pursuit of an unattainable ideal. The higher brain or higher self calls us to take control of our lives, make conscious choices, and actively shape our future rather than feeling like life is simply happening to us. This contrasts with the lower brain's desire for passive comfort and avoidance of challenge. The podcast emphasizes that we are "agents unto ourselves," meaning we have the power and responsibility to make our own choices. Our actions have consequences and impact our own experiences and the world around us, aligning with the principle of agency."Harvesting time" refers to the conscious and intentional use of our available time to work towards our chosen "star" or goals. It highlights the idea that time is a valuable resource that should be actively used to cultivate personal growth, achieve aspirations, and nurture relationships.

89. Know Your Lower Brain!
The most impactful thing I’ve learned in my adult life is the reality and agenda of the lower brain. It’s programmed for three fundamental facets: be efficient, avoid pain, and seek pleasure. The lower brain is critical for our survival, but it’s overused and often unmanaged. Bringing awareness to its agenda is the first step to taking more specific control of our lives, and the path to living with confident intention.

85. Letters
It seems like a good old fashioned letter is more and more a thing of the past. But I'm here to declare that letters, particularly ones you never send, can be very therapeutic and useful. I recently participated a new podcast with my friends Loran and B. It's called To Whom It May Concern (unsent letters). I was surprised at just how healing it was to write a letter to my deceased sister Charity, who passed away while I was serving a mission in 2001. Who would you write a letter to? What if you wrote a letter to yourself (from the future). What advice would you have? What insights? What invitations? More: Looking to level up your experience of life? 81. Room Service (Emotional Adulthood vs. Emotional Childhood)
Why is room service so amazing? Breakfast in bed. Lunch in bed. Dinner in bed. I'm all for it. Well, my lower brain is, anyway. The thing about room service is it checks all the boxes of our lower brains directives: 1. Expend the least amount of personal energy possible. 2. Avoid pain. 3. Seek pleasure. Our lower brains aren't just interested in outsourcing our physical needs and wants. It does it with emotional needs and wants too! That's why we'd much prefer the world to bend to our beliefs and desires so that we can feel the way we want to feel. Plain and simple. Emotional Adulthood represents our own personal sovereignty of our experience. Some things in life cannot be outsourced, and our own emotional state is one of those things. Our personal contentment, as it so happens, is an act of solitude. And that's good thing. Learn more about achieving Emotional Adulthood at BrycePeterson.com

80. Cloudy, With a Chance of Feelings
Have you ever noticed that different people react differently to the same weather? Some people love cloudy days, while others are disappointed by them. We might even appreciate rain one day, and despise it another. Like anything else in life, weather is a circumstance. I've been presented with a number of unusual circumstances recently that have really driven home the reality that our thoughts about circumstances truly create my feelings. The good news? We have options. There are different ways to think and feel about things, and we have the power within ourselves to explore that. More: I invite you to learn more at BrycePeterson.com. 78. Our Emotional Playlists
At the end of last year, the major music platforms sent out a summary of our yearly listening metrics. I wasn't surprised to see that I listened to my favorite band, Clutch, for hundreds of hours. However, I was taken back by the song I listened to more than any other: In the Meantime, by Spacehog. Wouldn't it be interesting and informative if we could have a yearly review of our emotional playlists? The good news is, we can do just that! Thought downloads are a mechanism to pull back the curtain and really get familiar with our emotions and which ones we seem to have on repeat. Once we become aware of these emotional playlists, we can begin to make modifications (if we so choose).

77. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: The Power of Questions
With the seemingly sudden rise of AI into the limelight, it almost feels as though we have a magic mirror that we can speak to and it will show us anything we want to see. Wait - that’s essentially what it is. Did you know your brain can do this too? It’s been there our entire life doing this very thing. In this episode I want to offer a more than subtle reminder that our brains provide precisely what we ask for. It’s time to start asking it far more worthy questions.

73. Primal Tension
I coach Latter-day Saint fathers on identifying, navigating, and overcoming Primal Tension - namely the earthly force of nature that's always stood between us and our honorable aspirations. Is an even more amazing marriage possible? Who doesn't want that?!What about confidently advancing our careers through our depth of knowledge and more consistent action? Sign me up!A stronger connection with our kids? Yes, please. How about forging a more tried and true testimony of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ? Of course, we desire this. The question is, can we overcome the apathy, criticism, and boredom that consistently stand to thwart our best laid plans, and the honest desires of our hearts?Every time, Primal Tension is what makes these pursuits challenging, and at times, seemingly unattainable.Primal Tension is a fundamental dynamic to understand. We might call it the 'natural man', or carnal desires. As I explain it, some may be inclined to group it into the concept of temptation. However we want to look at it, it's always been our greatest opponent. The seeds of Primal Tension live within us. And while we sojourn through our mortal journey, they will ever be our companion. Not to dismay or fear. Just simply becoming aware of Primal Tension is a major step forward for all of us.

72. Interested Over Interesting
Do you ever worry that you’re not interesting enough to other people? Well, here’s the thing. It’s far more valuable to be interested in others than it is to strive to be interesting. Here are a few reasons why: **1. Connection and rapport:** By focusing on others and their interests, you create a sense of connection and rapport. People appreciate genuine curiosity and openness. Asking questions, actively listening, and showing sincere interest in their lives makes them feel valued and heard. This fosters deeper relationships and builds trust. **2. Learning and growth:** Being interested in others opens you up to new perspectives, experiences, and knowledge. You learn about different cultures, thoughts, and ways of life. This broadens your own understanding of the world and helps you grow as a person. **3. Natural magnetism:** When you're genuinely interested in others, your enthusiasm and curiosity become infectious. People are drawn to those who show interest in them, making you naturally more engaging and magnetic. **4. Sustainable relationships:** Striving to be interesting can feel like a performance, exhausting to maintain. It can also focus the relationship on you, making it one-sided. On the other hand, genuine interest creates a natural flow in the relationship. Both individuals actively contribute, making it more sustainable and mutually rewarding. **5. Personal fulfillment:** Helping others, offering support, and learning about their stories can be incredibly fulfilling. Being interested in others allows you to contribute positively to their lives, finding your own sense of purpose and meaning. Of course, being interesting can still be valuable. Having unique experiences, hobbies, or skills can spark conversations and draw people in. However, it should be a natural extension of who you are, not a fabricated persona. Ultimately, the most valuable quality you can bring to any interaction is a genuine interest in others. This fosters connection, learning, and personal fulfillment, leading to richer and more meaningful relationships in all aspects of life. Remember, the paradox is that the more interested you are in others, the more interesting you yourself become. People are naturally drawn to those who show them genuine interest, and they will find your own experiences and perspective fascinating in return.

71. The Stature of Our Systems
One of the most fundamental truths we can ever learn in this world is this: "We do not rise to the level of our goals; we sink to the stature of our systems." - James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) It is through our repeated actions (driven by our thoughts and accompanying emotions) that we can truly move the needle of progress and improvement in our lives. No one explains better how to improve habit formation that James Clear (trust me - I've read a lot of self-help books). Another rather fascinating book I cite in this episode is The Millionaire Fast Lane (by MJ DeMarco). This is a rather candid look into human nature in general, and how to break free of being bound by the lower brain. He speaks a lot about how humans are mesmerized by perceived grand outcomes, but ultimately disenchanted by the work it takes to produce them. I'm going to be ready at the beginning of February to take on ten people to go through my new Undaunted coaching program (for free, as you'll be the first ten people I've ever worked with). It will be a great opportunity for the program to gain some traction and provide invaluable experience to me as a new coach for Latter-day Saint dads.

70. Behold, the Drama Triangle
Do you ever feel like the outside world is reigning blows down upon you - that you're a powerless victim in need of rescuing? Psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Karpman articulated a paradigm called the Drama Triangle, in which he describes this very scenario. He seemed to notice this drama playing out, in varying magnitudes, in virtually every single one of his patients - and everyone else as well. As we come to awareness of this dynamic, we can start to better understand the underpinnings to our default behaviors, and navigate more useful ways through life. 68. Christmas When?
Remember that song from The Forgotten Carols "I Cry the Day I Take the Tree Down"? We sometimes feel a little gloomy when Christmas is over, but why is that? It's as if it's something that floats into our lives like a flock of birds, and then leaves. As I've come to learn from a friend of mine, Christmas happens in our heads. It's not the day itself, or the weeks leading up to it. He knows because he celebrated it with his family a different day this year. And you know what? It felt exactly the same to them as it has in years prior when the celebrated on the designated calendar day. What this means it we get to decide when we want to feel and experience the Christmas spirit. It can be any time, any place!

Mary and Joseph are beloved the world over for the indispensable role they played in raising the Lord Jesus Christ. But they were mortals. In this way, the were like the rest of us. They were no strangers to feeling vulnerable and inadequate. In fact, they would have known it more intimately than most. So in this time of year where so many of us struggle to find our true worth, let us remember that with God, mortals can accomplish the impossible. Through Christ, we become Mortals, with a capital M.

The most transcendent invitation the Savior has extended to us is to become as little children. "For of such is the kingdom of heaven." And further: "For such have I laid down my life and taken it up again." What kinds of attitudes and behaviors would we need to prune in order to give heed to this most holy, and oft repeated invitation? 60. What is Truth?
The Spirit of God speaks things as they really are, and as they really will be. How in alignment are our minds or perceptions with reality? Circumstances are in the truth category. 59. The Magic of Being
My wellness pointed out something rather interesting this week. There are three words most of us tend to have mixed up: Do Have Be We're under the impression that if we "do" something, then we can "have" a certain result, and therefore "be" the person we want to be. It's as if we'll give ourselves permission to be the person we desire only after we've done something. But we have it backwards. The correct order is Be Do Have. The reason for this is because our behaviors flow from our sense of identity. The sum of our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves is essentially who we are. Are we the kind of person that engages in the behavior that produces the results we say we're after? If we are that kind of person, then our behavior takes care of itself. 56. We Can't Do It Alone
Have you ever wondered why God didn't place us all on our own planets, by ourselves, alone? Some things are only known to Him, but it's clearly not supposed to be that way. I reflected recently on how all the temple blessings I enjoy are made possible by all of you. Yes, you. Anyone who's ever made that offering of faithful tithing has made temple blessings available. Anyone who has offered their time in the temple to officiate, who's helped to build them, and all the other things that go into it. The point is, you were willing. ABOUT THIS SHOW
In the spirit of thought leaders like Brooke Castillo, Jody Moore, and Kain Ramsay, Bryce Peterson brings the message of CTFAR (Circumstances Thoughts Feelings Action Results) and Core Identity to Latter-Day Saint dads. With the empowering and liberating knowledge that our thoughts (NOT our circumstances) drive our emotions, we can press forward through life’s challenges and opportunities with a new-found hope and confidence. Can you really make a difference in this world? Actually, you can.
