Where Should Your Money Go? (Part 2): Giving to the Church, the Poor, and Those in Need
Pastor Kent Dresdow, Executive Pastor Matt Rehrer, and Pastor Jeremy Pray return to the topic of Christian giving with a set of practical questions left over from Part 1. The conversation moves from biblical principles to everyday application — wrestling with where giving should be directed, how the local church functions as the primary channel for generosity, what role parachurch ministries play, how to care for the poor and those in immediate need, and how married couples should approach giving as a shared act of worship. Along the way, the pastors share honest observations about giving patterns in evangelical churches and offer pastoral encouragement to those just starting out.Are you and your spouse making giving decisions together, or has it quietly become one person's domain? If you've been a Christian for several years, have you ever honestly evaluated whether your giving has grown — or stalled? When someone in your church has a financial need, do you see that as the church's job to handle, or as an opportunity for you personally?Welcome to NorthCreek Church! In glad reliance on the Holy Spirit and Scripture, we exist for the glory of Christ, to make disciples who worship God, walk in love, and witness to the world.Connect With Us:Sunday Services: 9:00AM & 10:45AM Address: 2303 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598Online Resources:Main Website: https://www.northcreek.org/ NorthCreek Academy (TK-8): https://ncapschool.org/ Sermon Archive: https://northcreek.churchcenter.com/channels/19901 Church App: Download the Church Center App and search for "NorthCreek Church"

What Does the Bible Say About Giving? (Part 1): Stewardship and the Cheerful Heart
In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow, Executive Pastor Matt Rehrer, and Pastor Jeremy Pray open a conversation that rarely gets a full hearing: what does Scripture actually say about Christian giving? Beginning with the admission that the topic often goes unaddressed, the three work through key passages including 1 Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 8–9, Philippians 4:10–20, and a brief visit to Malachi 3 — tracing the biblical vision of giving not as a financial obligation but as an act of worship. The discussion covers the tithe, the distinction between Old Covenant law and New Covenant generosity, how to think about giving under financial pressure, and why Scripture consistently frames the giving of the local church as something warm and deeply personal before the Lord.Do you think of your giving as an act of worship, or does it mostly feel like a line item? If you're in debt or under financial pressure, have you ever talked with a pastor or elder about how to navigate giving faithfully rather than stopping altogether? When the offering plate passes, what is it doing to your heart — and what would it look like to let that moment be a genuine prayer of trust?Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

What Does It Mean to Walk in Love? Moving from the Sidelines to Community
In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow is joined by Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to discuss the "third W" of the church's mission: walking in love. After several intense deep dives into topics like fear and idolatry, the team explores the practical philosophy of how believers move from being a face in a crowd to being an integral part of the body of Christ. The conversation centers on the biblical necessity of being known and exercising the "one-another" commands of Scripture. Drawing from the patterns of the early church in Acts 4 and the exhortation in Hebrews 3 to encourage one another daily, the pastors explain why intentional community is mission-critical for every believer to avoid being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. They break down the specific NorthCreek philosophy of utilizing both "Life Stage" groups for stability and "Community Groups" for depth, arguing that being involved in both helps mitigate the common pitfalls of isolation or shallow fellowship.Beyond small groups, the pastors discuss the vital role of service and the importance of intergenerational relationships, highlighting Titus 2 as a model for growth. Whether you are navigating a busy season of life or looking to deepen your commitment to the local church, this episode provides a pastoral roadmap for moving into the life-giving rhythms of the communion of saints.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Do Not Fear (Part 2): Identifying the Idols of the Heart
In this second part of a two-episode conversation, Pastor Kent Dresdow continues his discussion with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray on the intersection of fear, faith, and the recurring temptation of idolatry. Picking up from their study of Isaiah 43 and 44, the pastors explore the nature of fear, distinguishing between physiological reactions to crisis and the spiritual responses that reveal where we place our ultimate trust.A central theme of this episode is the relationship between "sinful fear"—defined as a paralyzing distrust of God—and the "factory of idols" within the human heart. The conversation moves from the literal household idols of ancient Israel to the modern-day "techniques" and "comforts" we run to for refuge, such as social media, financial security, or the approval of others. Drawing from pastoral experience and the writings of John Flavel, the hosts provide practical diagnostic questions to help believers identify where a good desire has become an "ultimate thing".This episode emphasizes the sufficiency of Scripture in confronting the "blindness" of our own hearts. By looking to God’s character as revealed in the text, believers are encouraged to move from a "closed-fisted" demand for control to an "open-handed" trust in God’s providence. Whether you are struggling with "spinning and toiling" thoughts at night or seeking to steward your life for God’s glory, this discussion offers grounded, biblical wisdom for finding true security in the Lord.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Do Not Fear (Part 1): The Comfort of God’s Character in Isaiah 43
In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow is joined by Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to reflect on a recent sermon from Isaiah 43:1–7. Nearly one year into the podcast, the conversation centers on why this specific passage—preached as the "next up" in a long-running expository series—struck such a profound chord with the congregation. The hosts explore how the sovereign timing of God’s Word meets the specific anxieties of his people, whether they are facing global instability or personal trials like illness and relational brokenness. The discussion highlights the vital importance of expository preaching, where the Lord sets the agenda for the church rather than the pastor. By walking through the text, the pastors show how God anchors his command to "fear not" in his own identity as Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. They examine the depth of God’s covenant language, noting how he calls his people by name and regards them as "precious" and "glorious". This is not merely a motivational sentiment but a positional reality for the believer, grounded in the redemptive work of Christ.Drawing connections to Romans 8:28 and 2 Corinthians 3:18, Kent, Matt, and Jeremy explain how the sufficiency of Scripture provides a unique remedy for fear that the world cannot offer. Whether you are a "suffering saint" needing comfort or a "sinning saint" laboring for sanctification, this episode offers a pastoral look at how resting in God’s presence and providence transforms our response to a fearful world. This conversation serves as a reminder that because we belong to Him, we do not lose heart.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Understanding Old Testament Narrative: Lessons from David and Goliath
How should believers read and apply Old Testament stories without making themselves the hero or over-spiritualizing the historical details? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to debrief a recent expository preaching workshop hosted for 90 men across the greater Bay Area. While reflecting on the encouragement of studying Old Testament narrative together, the pastors take a practical deep dive into 1 Samuel 17, the familiar story of David and Goliath. The conversation unpacks common pitfalls in teaching and reading historical narratives. It is easy to turn the five smooth stones into symbolic virtues or to identify ourselves with David bravely facing our daily giants. Instead, the pastors demonstrate how faithful Scripture application requires looking at the narrative flow and paying attention to what the main character says, rather than just focusing on the climactic action. David explicitly stated that his victory was to declare that there is a God in Israel, acting as the anointed king delivering a fearful people. Ultimately, this historical reality points the believer to the greater deliverance worked through Christ our King.Whether you are an aspiring teacher laboring over sermon preparation or a church member seeking to grow in your personal Bible reading, this episode offers helpful tools to mine the depths of God's Word. Join the pastors as they encourage listeners to open the Bible with humility, reliance on the Spirit, and a desire to see wonderful things from God's law.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Joy of Forgiveness (Part 3): What Forgiveness Actually Means
What are you actually saying when you tell someone "I forgive you"? It doesn't mean you'll forget it. It doesn't mean the consequences disappear. What it does mean is that you're sending the offense away — you're not going to bring it up to them, bring it up to others, or let it sit and breed bitterness in your own heart. And beyond that, biblical forgiveness (the Greek word is charizomai — to give graciously) involves actually moving toward the other person with warmth. Not just biting your tongue, but extending grace. In this final episode of the series, the guys define forgiveness carefully, talk through the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation, and address when it's right to just let love cover an offense rather than making it a bigger conversation. They share honest stories, recommend some specific resources for anyone who wants to go deeper, and close with a direct word for anyone who already has someone in mind. Forgiveness can be hard, slow work — but the Spirit makes it possible, and you don't have to figure it out alone. If you're stuck, this episode will help you take the next step.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Joy of Forgiveness (Part 2): Forgiveness in Everyday Life
If God has forgiven us vertically in Christ, what does that mean for how we forgive each other horizontally — in marriage, in parenting, in the church? In this episode, the guys pick up where Part 1 left off and get practical. They walk through the biblical basis for horizontal forgiveness, drawing from Ephesians 4:32, Matthew 18, Luke 7, and the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6 — showing that forgiveness isn't a one-time event but a daily practice that flows out of understanding what God has already done for us.From there, the conversation gets into the stuff that actually comes up at home. What's the difference between an apology and asking for forgiveness? They're not the same thing, and blurring the line creates more problems than it solves. An apology acknowledges hurt. Forgiveness covers sin. Most of us stop at "I'm sorry" — but Scripture calls us further. They also get honest about why asking for forgiveness is so hard: it takes humility, someone has to go first, and most of us would rather make it a transaction than go to the cross. If any of that sounds familiar, this episode is worth your time.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Leading Women's Ministries: Equipping, Counseling, and Discipleship
What does it look like to faithfully lead and disciple women within the local church? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Laurie Agnello and Katie Willis, the co-directors of women's ministries at NorthCreek Church. Together, they share their personal backgrounds, their unique paths into leadership, and how their complementary gifts serve the body of Christ. The conversation highlights the vital role of Christian discipleship, exploring how women can balance the desire to be equipped with the biblical call to actively disciple others. Laurie and Katie discuss practical avenues like the Gospel Moms program and one-to-one discipleship, emphasizing the beauty of multi-generational Bible studies in making a large church feel smaller and more connected. Looking to the future, they share a deep pastoral burden for increasing biblical literacy, equipping women to read, understand, and apply God's Word for themselves in everyday life.Whether you are actively serving in ministry, looking for ways to grow, or simply seeking encouragement in your Christian life, this episode offers a helpful look at both the private and public ministries of the Word. Ultimately, it is a celebration of God’s faithfulness—from seeing women come to saving faith in Christ to watching them faithfully endure hard circumstances by resting in His sovereignty.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Joy of Forgiveness (Part 1): The Blessings of Confessing Sin
What happens when a believer stays silent about their sin? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow is joined by Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to introduce NorthCreek’s memory verse for the year: Psalm 32. While the church recently finished memorizing the book of Titus, the pastors explain that this Psalm offers a more attainable but deeply profound focus on the “joy of forgiveness”.Walking through the text verse-by-verse, the conversation highlights the stark contrast between the misery of unconfessed sin and the freedom found in repentance. The pastors discuss David’s description of the “heavy hand” of the Lord, noting how spiritual distress can manifest physically when we refuse to confess. They explore the urgency of seeking God while He may be found—before the “rush of great waters” overwhelms the sinner—and the wisdom of not being like a stubborn mule that requires a bit and bridle to stay near.Ultimately, this discussion points to the gospel found in the Old Testament: that the one who trusts in the Lord is surrounded by steadfast love and counted righteous. This episode lays the theological foundation for understanding biblical confession and the sweetness of being restored to the Lord.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Friendships with the Opposite Sex (Part 2): Guardrails and Warning Signs
In this second part of a two-part series, Pastor Kent Dresdow, Matt Rehrer, and Jeremy Pray continue their conversation on how to maintain biblical friendships with the opposite sex, shifting the focus from general principles to specific guardrails. While the previous episode established the biblical call to treat one another with pure affection, this discussion tackles the internal and external warning signs that indicate a relationship may be drifting into dangerous territory.Drawing from the concept of the "anatomy of an affair," the pastors discuss the subtle, invisible steps of the heart—such as emotional readiness, comparison, and taking one’s delight off the Lord and one’s spouse—that often precede physical sin. They emphasize that the best defense against temptation is a vibrant walk with Christ and the intentional pursuit of one’s own spouse. The group shares personal practices for integrity, including the importance of rest, total transparency with devices, and trusting the "spidey sense" of a spouse who might spot a concern before you do. This episode is a call to wisdom, watchfulness, and reliance on the body of Christ for accountability.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Friendships with the Opposite Sex (Part 1): Purity and Affection
How should Christian men and women relate to one another within the church? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow is joined by Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to answer a thoughtful question from a church member regarding the boundaries and biblical nature of friendships between the opposite sex. While modern culture often sexualizes these interactions, the Bible calls believers to treat one another as brothers and sisters with absolute purity. The conversation begins by anchoring the discussion in Scripture, specifically Romans 15:7, which commands us to "welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you". The pastors discuss the tension between maintaining high standards of holiness—avoiding even the appearance of indiscretion—while not becoming cold or distant toward sisters in Christ. They explore the biblical concept of the "holy kiss" as a model for warm, family-like affection that is distinct from the world’s sensuality. This episode also offers practical wisdom for ministry and workplace environments, such as open-door policies and transparent calendars, ensuring that our conduct glorifies God and protects the reputation of the church.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Gift of Rest: Kent’s Mid-Sabbatical Reflections on Ministry and Worship
In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow provides a special mid-sabbatical update, sitting down with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to discuss the progress of his time away. While Kent is currently in a season of rest, he shares how the Lord has been strengthening him through a lack of daily ministry obligations and a focus on "purposeful rest".The conversation explores the biblical rationale for a sabbatical, tracing the concept back to the Sabbath rest established at creation and its application for vocational ministers today. The pastors discuss the unique "spiritual heaviness" of ministry life—where the care for souls often follows a pastor home—and why periodic seasons of withdrawal are necessary for long-term endurance in the local church.Kent also shares his "master planning" for the year ahead, specifically his work with the MacArthur Center for Expository Preaching to lead workshops for the next generation of preachers. The Story: Creativity as a Gospel Witness
What does it look like to leverage art, stewardship, and technical skill for the sake of the Gospel? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Brent Moutier, NorthCreek’s Director of Operations, to discuss the intersection of campus stewardship and creative outreach. Brent shares his personal testimony, tracing his journey from the film industry in Los Angeles to overseeing the development of NorthCreek’s campus, viewing facilities not as the ministry itself, but as a stewardship that allows ministry to happen without distraction. The conversation then turns to "The Story," NorthCreek’s annual Easter presentation of living art (tableau vivant). Brent takes listeners behind the scenes of this massive production, explaining how hundreds of volunteers—from carpenters to musicians—unite to recreate classic biblical masterpieces. They discuss the theological "why" behind the event: while the art and music are compelling, the primary goal is to provide a clear, biblically accurate presentation of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.Kent and Brent also highlight the importance of multi-generational service within the local church and the rigorous process of ensuring the narration remains faithful to Scripture. Whether you are interested in the technical side of ministry or looking for an opportunity to invite unbelievers to hear the truth of salvation, this episode offers an encouraging look at how the body of Christ works together to spotlight the Savior. The Story 2026 runs from March 27–29. Voices from the Early Years: Testimonies of God’s Grace
In this special anniversary episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with a panel of "senior saints"—longtime members who have witnessed God’s work at NorthCreek for decades. Dubbing themselves survivors of the "Stone Age" (a nod to the church's first shepherd, Pastor Mel Stone), these guests share heartwarming and humorous stories of the church's early days, from meeting in a women's club to the construction of the first buildings on the current campus. The conversation highlights the church's enduring commitment to the sufficiency of Scripture and the importance of investing in the next generation. The guests reflect on the impact of early youth programs like the "Jet Cadets," the vibrant "Body Life" services of the 1970s, and the hospitality that knit the body together. They also candidly acknowledge that the church has weathered difficult seasons, yet through it all, God has remained faithful to preserve a people for His name. This episode is more than a history lesson; it is a testimony to the power of the gospel in the local church. As these faithful members recount 70 years of ministry, listeners are encouraged to cherish their own spiritual heritage and look forward with hope to what the Lord will do next.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

NorthCreek’s 70th Anniversary: Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness
What does it look like for a local church to remain faithful for seven decades? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow joins Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to reflect on NorthCreek Church’s 70th anniversary. While the campus has transformed from open walnut orchards to a built-out ministry hub, the conversation focuses on the spiritual trajectory of the church—from its planting in the 1950s through seasons of doctrinal stabilization and growth. The pastors discuss the unique history of the "Stone Age"—the era of the church's first pastor, Mel Stone—and how the church has matured over time. They also engage with a sobering warning from Dave Harvey about the danger of ministry becoming a "monument," emphasizing that a healthy church must always prioritize present faithfulness and future gospel work over resting on a legacy.Whether you are a longtime member or new to the community, this conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at how God preserves His people. It is a reminder that while buildings change and leaders pass the baton, Christ remains the head of the church, sustaining His work through every generation.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Object of Our Delight: Meditation and the Pursuit of God
In this New Year’s episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow is joined by Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to discuss the spiritual trajectory of 2026. The conversation begins with a lighthearted look at personal hobbies—from dirt biking and water sports to reading and writing—serving as a bridge to explore the deep, biblical concept of "delight" found in the Psalms. The pastors examine the "bookends" of the Psalter, specifically connecting Psalm 1 and Psalm 149. They observe that the "blessed man" of Psalm 1 is defined by a heart that delights in the law of the Lord and a mind that meditates on it day and night. Using their own hobbies as an illustration, the hosts explain that meditation is like "muttering" or "chewing" on a subject—a natural mental preoccupation that occurs when we truly find pleasure in something. The discussion also highlights the profound truth in Psalm 149:4: that the Lord Himself "takes pleasure in his people" and "adorns the humble with salvation". This episode encourages believers to move beyond seeing Scripture as a mere duty and to instead cultivate a life where God’s Word is the primary object of their focus and affection. By framing spiritual growth through the lens of delight, the pastors offer a warm, pastoral invitation to a closer walk with Christ and deeper fellowship within the local church.

Fostering Student Discipleship: An Interview with Zack Harris
How do we balance fun and faithfulness when discipling the next generation? On this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow and Pastor Matt Rehrer are joined by their friend and co-laborer, Student Ministries Director Zack Harris.Zack opens up about his upbringing in Santa Clarita, his unique conversion story that moved from a fear of God’s wrath to an affection for the beauty of the gospel, and his call to pastoral ministry. He also shares about his family—his wife, Christine, and their four daughters—and the formative experience of serving overseas in Israel. The main conversation focuses on Christian parenting and spiritual formation within the local church. Zack explains his philosophy for student ministry, emphasizing that "fun is the bridge" to purposeful discipleship. He discusses the intentionality of their small group structure (DG) to facilitate the "private ministry of the Word," which builds on the foundation of expository preaching. Finally, they address the critical partnership between the student ministry staff and parents, focusing on helping students transition from relying on parental authority to increasing their own faith and obedience as they grow in love for Christ and the local church.Zack shares encouragement from their current study of Acts, where students are recognizing that the growth of the church is entirely due to the grace of God.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Unpacking the Sermon: Mary’s Profound Surrender in Luke 1:26-38
How do we find fresh awe and curiosity in the familiar Christmas story? This episode of the afterWord podcast provides a deeper dive into the recent sermon on Luke 1:26-38, the biblical account of the Annunciation. Pastor Kent Dresdow, with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray, explores the profound theological and practical questions surrounding the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary. The conversation moves past the surface level, exploring Mary’s initial confusion and fear, her quick movement to submission, and the deep implications of her response, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). They discuss the connections between Gabriel’s words (“for nothing will be impossible with God,” Luke 1:37) and the story of Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 18. Furthermore, they consider the significance of the Holy Spirit’s “overshadowing” (Luke 1:35), linking it to the Old Testament tabernacle and the New Testament concept of indwelling. This discussion offers key insights for Christian discipleship and spiritual formation. The pastors apply Mary’s profound faith and obedience to Christian parenting, encouraging believers to wrestle with what true surrender to Christ looks like at every age. This is an essential listen for those seeking to deepen their understanding of Christ-centered living and the authority of Scripture this Advent season._Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

The Council of Nicaea and Christmas: Worshiping the Eternal Son
What does a 4th-century church council have to do with Christmas in 2025? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastor Matt Rehrer to reflect on the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea—and why it still matters every time we celebrate the birth of Christ.Fresh from a pastors’ conference in Istanbul (historic Constantinople), Kent shares how walking through the Nicene Creed line by line deepened his worship of the Triune God. He explains the controversy with Arius, why the church had to answer Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?”, and how Athanasius and others defended the full deity of Christ against the claim that “there was a time when he was not.”From there, Kent and Matt trace how Nicaea safeguards the heart of the gospel: if Jesus is not truly God and truly man, there is no real mediator, no true grace, and no secure assurance. They explore the eternal love shared between Father, Son, and Spirit; the difference between the triune God of the Bible and every other “god” or idol; and how this rich theology shapes Advent preaching from passages like Luke 1–2, John 17, and 2 Corinthians 13.Whether you’re newer to church history or hungry to go deeper into the Trinity, this conversation will help you see Christmas not just as the story of a baby in a manger, but of the eternal Son—very God of very God—come to save.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Thanksgiving Special: Steadfast Love in the Morning, Faithfulness by Night
How do you cultivate real thanksgiving when life hasn’t been easy—and the holiday table holds both joy and sorrow? In this Thanksgiving Special of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Dr. Matt Rehrer to explore what Scripture calls us to when it says, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord” (Psalm 92) and “Enter his gates with thanksgiving” (Psalm 100).Drawing from passages like Psalm 92 and Psalm 100, Kent and Matt unpack how thanksgiving is rooted in God’s character—His steadfast love in the morning and His faithfulness by night. They look at how gratitude matures over a lifetime, why older saints’ praise carries such weight, and how believers can guard against cynicism as they age. They also share practical ways to shape your Thanksgiving around worship: reading Scripture at the table, inviting every generation to reflect on God’s faithfulness, incorporating simple traditions like a “thankful tree,” and rethinking the pace of the day itself. Along the way, they reflect on the original Thanksgiving, the call to give thanks even in seasons of loss, and why this holiday naturally leads Christians to remember God’s covenant love.Whether your year has been filled with blessing, hardship, or a mix of both, this episode aims to help you enter the holiday anchored in God’s faithfulness and strengthened by a heart of expository, Christ-centered gratitude.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

Greg Gifford (Part 2): How Habits Help Shape the Heart
What do you do when your desires don’t line up with God’s commands? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down again with Dr. Greg Gifford—author of Heart & Habits and host of the Transform podcast—to explore how the Lord uses everyday obedience to reshape the heart.Building from Philippians 2:12–13 and themes throughout Psalm 119, Kent and Greg talk through the surprising way Scripture presents the relationship between discipline and desire. Under the Spirit’s work, consistent habits—attending Lord’s Day worship, giving, practicing fellowship, opening the Scriptures—can actually move the affections toward what God loves, even when the “want to” is slow to follow. From there, the conversation widens into the cultural currents forming the next generation: declining birthrates, delayed marriage, digital isolation, expressive individualism, and the way smartphones since 2007 have altered relationships and discipleship. Greg offers a pastoral appeal for churches to disciple young men intentionally, cast a better vision of the good life in Christ, and root identity in the local church rather than politics or online tribes. The episode closes with a needed reminder about the professionalism of ministry—why pastors must stay close to their people, resist platform-driven pressures, and cultivate long-haul faithfulness. If you want to understand how habits, obedience, culture, and discipleship intersect—and how God truly transforms the heart—this conversation will serve you well.Welcome to NorthCreek Church!

What should Christians do with October 31? In this special Halloween edition of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to talk costumes, candy… and the courage of Martin Luther. In a light, lively conversation (yes, including dad-tax debates and Pilgrim’s Progress nightmares), the guys offer a pastoral way to think about Halloween alongside Reformation Day—the anniversary of October 31, 1517, when Luther posted the 95 Theses at the Castle Church in Wittenberg and helped spark the Protestant Reformation and a recovery of justification by faith alone. They also explain how NorthCreek Church has shifted from hosting large “Fall Fest” gatherings to encouraging gospel presence in our neighborhoods—through hospitality, meaningful conversations, and creative outreach ideas that point to Christ. You’ll hear practical ways to engage your neighbors, a brief look at the history behind the Reformation, and some lighthearted reflection on how this unique day can be both fun and spiritually meaningful.Whether you say Happy Halloween or Happy Reformation Day, this special episode invites you to redeem October 31 for the glory of God and the good of your neighbors.NorthCreek Church Dr. Kent DresdowIn glad reliance on the Holy Spirit and Scripture, we exist for the glory of Christ, to make disciples who worship God, walk in love, and witness to the world.Sundays: 9:00AM & 10:45AM2303 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598https://www.northcreek.org/Church, Worship Service, All Ages Classes, Baptism, Membership, Discipleship, Children's Ministry, Students Ministry, College And Career Ministry, Adults Ministry, Outreach, Counseling, Food Pantry, Job Network, Church App, Sermons, Books And Cafe, Reading Plans, Giving, Prayer, Church Events, Men's Breakfast, Walnut Creek Church, Christian Community, Bay Area Church, northcreek church, walnut creek church, christian community, bay area church, faith based, bible study, community groups, worship music, serving others, Fellowship, Sunday School, Youth Group, Spiritual Growth, Faith Community, Volunteer Opportunities, Church Fellowship, Mission Trips, Family Ministry, Small Groups, Church Volunteering, Community Outreach, Church Gathering

Committed to the Local Church: The Case for Membership
What is church membership, and why does it matter right now? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to consider the biblical foundations and practical blessings of committing to a local church. While the pulpit focuses on the public ministry of the Word, this conversation tackles a timely pastoral question many at NorthCreek are asking: Is membership in the Bible, and how does it shape the life of our church?Walking through passages like Acts 1:15; 2:41; 6:1–7, 1 Timothy 5:9, Hebrews 13:17, Ephesians 4:11–13, Colossians 1:28, and Hebrews 10:23–25, the team shows how Scripture assumes known lists, counted people, and accountable care. Membership clarifies who our elders will “give an account” for, equips saints for ministry, and anchors believers in mutual encouragement and loving accountability. You’ll hear practical counsel on moving from “you guys” to “we”—owning the life, mission, and witness of your church family.Whether you’re new to NorthCreek, a longtime attender, a traveling nurse or student here for a season, or a member needing refreshment, this episode invites you to go all in—to belong, be equipped, and build up the body of Christ. Singing the Truth (Part 2): A Hymn in Every Home
In this follow-up to our Sing! recap, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Dan Grassi, Minister of Music at NorthCreek Church, to unpack the vision behind the new Sing Hymnal—a collaboration from Getty Music and Crossway—and how curated hymnody can shape both our services and our homes. Dan traces a brief history of hymnals from the Reformation to the modern-hymn movement (think “In Christ Alone,” “Before the Throne of God Above”), then explains why a carefully chosen body of songs helps truth take root in our memories and discipleship. You’ll hear how the hymnal is organized—by the flow of gathered worship, the Christian life, and the life of Christ (Advent to Ascension and beyond)—and how that serves pastors, worship planners, and families alike. Dan also clarifies psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16): what each is aiming to do, how they overlap, and why a healthy church sings all three. Along the way, we talk practicals: using hymn stories and Scripture references at the dinner table, learning melodies from simple recordings, and cultivating singable truth for kids and adults. If you care about congregational singing, family worship, and passing the faith to the next generation, this episode will help you bring biblically rich, Christ-centered songs into weekly rhythms—on Sundays and around the table. Our hope: not just a hymnal in the pew, but a hymn in every home.

Singing the Truth (Part 1): Lessons from the Sing! Conference
What happens to a church when it sings rich truth together? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to unpack highlights from the Sing! Conference in Nashville and why those days of Scripture-saturated worship were such a gift to our staff and church family. From the joy of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with believers from around the world to the refreshment of unhurried fellowship, the conversation explores how corporate singing shapes unity, discipleship, and mission.Drawing from Revelation 5, Psalm 22, Psalm 47, Psalm 78, and Ephesians 4, the guys reflect on a biblical theology of singing—why we proclaim who God is (not merely how we feel), and how melody and poetry help lodge doctrine deep in our hearts for both ordinary days and suffering. They discuss the beauty of skillful musicianship paired with sound theology, the encouragement of robust congregational harmonies, and simple, singable hymns and songs (think CityAlight) that serve the whole body. You’ll also hear practical takeaways for corporate worship and family worship—from preparing our hearts on Sundays to filling our homes with singable truth throughout the week. The episode closes with a preview of the newly released Sing! Hymnal and why recovering hymn-singing in our homes could strengthen the next generation. If you care about congregational singing, biblical worship, and passing the faith “from one generation to another,” this conversation will encourage you to sing with understanding and joy.Stay tuned for Part 2, where we talk about using a hymnal in everyday family life.2303 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598https://www.northcreek.org/Church, Worship Service, All Ages Classes, Baptism, Membership, Discipleship, Children's Ministry, Students Ministry, College And Career Ministry, Adults Ministry, Outreach, Counseling, Food Pantry, Job Network, Church App, Sermons, Books And Cafe, Reading Plans, Giving, Prayer, Church Events, Men's Breakfast, Walnut Creek Church, Christian Community, Bay Area Church, northcreek church, walnut creek church, christian community, bay area church, faith based, bible study, community groups, worship music, serving others, Fellowship, Sunday School, Youth Group, Spiritual Growth, Faith Community, Volunteer Opportunities, Church Fellowship, Mission Trips, Family Ministry, Small Groups, Church Volunteering, Community Outreach, Church Gathering

Special Episode: Loving God and Neighbor in a Time of Crisis
In this special episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow reflects on the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, exploring how Christians are called to respond when political violence shakes our hearts. Rather than allowing anger, fear, or vengeance to dominate, Kent points us back to Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:37–39: love God fully and love our neighbor as ourselves.Rooted in Leviticus 19 and illustrated through passages like the Good Samaritan and Jesus’ call to repentance in Luke 13, this conversation helps us discern what loving looks like—especially toward those we naturally struggle with. We are reminded that love begins in the heart, shapes our speech, and is expressed through our actions. Even in confusion, grief, and anger, the essentials remain clear: fix our gaze on Christ, resist hatred, speak truth with grace, and pray for justice, healing, and revival. If you’ve been unsettled by what’s happening in our country, you’re not alone. Whether you knew Charlie Kirk well or only by name, may this reflection bring clarity, hope, and a renewed commitment to walk in the footsteps of Jesus—in love, humility, and faith.NorthCreek Church Dr. Kent DresdowIn glad reliance on the Holy Spirit and Scripture, we exist for the glory of Christ, to make disciples who worship God, walk in love, and witness to the world.Sundays: 9:00AM & 10:45AM2303 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598https://www.northcreek.org/

Brad Bigney (Part 2): Help for Parents in the Aftermath
What do you do in the painful aftermath of discovering your child has walked away from the Lord? In this second conversation of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow and Executive Pastor Jeremy Pray sit down again with guest speaker Brad Bigney Lead Pastor of Grace Fellowship Church to offer gospel-centered hope and practical help for parents of prodigals.Building on Part 1, Brad speaks candidly about the immediate temptations parents face—blaming themselves, isolating from the church, or scrambling to find a “formula” to fix their child. He and his wife, Vicki, know firsthand the grief and confusion of watching children rebel, and yet they’ve learned that true comfort comes not from control but from Christ.Drawing encouragement from the Psalms of lament, Luke 7, and 2 Corinthians 12, the discussion points parents back to God’s sovereignty, the importance of grieving honestly, the necessity of staying connected to the body of Christ, and the hope that only the gospel provides. They also speak directly to parents who aren’t walking through this trial—urging them to respond with humility, compassion, and grace toward those who are.If you’re a parent in the “blast zone” of prodigal pain, or simply want to better walk alongside others in your church, this episode offers biblical wisdom, pastoral encouragement, and the reminder that God alone saves—and He is faithful.

Brad Bigney (Part 1): Hope for Parents of Prodigals
What do you do when you’ve raised your children to know the Lord, only to watch them walk away from the faith? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastor Jeremy Pray and guest speaker Brad Bigney Lead Pastor of Grace Fellowship Church, a longtime teacher at NorthCreek’s Counseling Training Conference. Together, they open a heartfelt conversation on parenting wayward children—a subject often overlooked in the church but deeply felt by many families.Brad shares from his own family’s story of walking through years of prodigal rebellion, and the lessons God taught him and his wife, Vicki, through the pain. The discussion addresses the false idea that faithful parenting guarantees godly kids, the unique burdens mothers and fathers carry, and how compassion—not quick fixes—is often the most Christlike response. Passages like Luke 7, where Jesus sees and loves the brokenhearted, and 2 Corinthians 12, where God’s strength is made perfect in weakness, shape the hope and comfort offered in this episode.Whether you’re a parent grieving a prodigal, a pastor counseling families, or a believer seeking to understand God’s purposes in suffering, this conversation offers honesty, encouragement, and the reminder that Christ meets us in our weakness.

Biblical Counseling (Part 2): Body, Soul, and the Sufficiency of Scripture
What does the Bible have to say about caring for both body and soul? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow continues the conversation with Executive Pastors Jeremy Pray and Matt Rehrer on the foundations and distinctives of biblical counseling. Building on part one, they explore how Scripture’s sufficiency shapes our approach to life’s problems, the difference between biblical and Christian counseling, and how to navigate the interplay between physical health and spiritual care.Drawing from passages including 2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Peter, John 9, and 2 Corinthians 4, they discuss why the Bible is not only sufficient for salvation but also for sanctification—helping believers respond faithfully to trials, whether rooted in spiritual struggle, medical diagnosis, or both. They address common misconceptions about biblical counseling, including the false notion that it ignores medicine, and emphasize the need to see physical and spiritual realities as intertwined rather than separate.Whether you are a pastor, counselor, or believer seeking clarity on how God’s Word meets us in suffering, this episode offers a biblically grounded, pastorally wise look at how to walk with others—and be counseled yourself—through the challenges of both outer-man ailments and inner-man struggles.

Biblical Counseling (Part 1): The Word at Work in Life’s Deepest Struggles
Why does NorthCreek Church practice biblical counseling—and what makes it different from Christian or secular therapy? In this episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastors Jeremy Pray and Matt Rehrer to begin a two-part series on the private ministry of the Word, shifting from the pulpit to the counseling room. Together, they unpack what biblical counseling is, when it’s most helpful, and why it matters in the life of the church.Drawing from convictions about the sufficiency of Scripture and the transforming power of the gospel, they define biblical counseling as intentional, Word-centered discipleship for those who feel stuck—whether in grief, sin, anxiety, or suffering. They walk through practical distinctions between everyday encouragement, community care, and formal counseling, and offer examples of how the church can come alongside someone in crisis with both hope and help from God’s Word. You’ll also hear about the intake process, what a typical counseling meeting looks like, and how “homework” is rooted not in self-help but in sanctification. Whether you’re curious about getting help, giving help, or growing as a disciple, this conversation will encourage you to see biblical counseling not as a last resort, but as a vital expression of Christlike care.To explore more, visit nctconference.org for workshop audio on issues like depression, anger, and anxiety.

Behind the Sermon: How the Spirit Reorients the Preacher’s Heart
What happens in the pulpit when the preacher isn’t suffering—but the text is? In this unique episode of afterWord, Pastor Kent Dresdow sits down with Executive Pastors Matt Rehrer and Jeremy Pray to reflect on a recent sermon from Psalm 119:25–32. Together they explore the distinction between interpreting affliction versus personal sin, how that decision shaped the structure and tone of the message, and what it means to “get it right” in study and “get it across” in preaching. The conversation pulls back the curtain on what happened between services—a quiet moment of prayer in Kent’s office that shifted his focus from personal detachment to pastoral compassion. It’s a powerful look at how the Spirit can reorient a preacher’s heart in real time. They also tackle the tension between lamenting evil and longing for God’s justice, considering how we should respond when public figures fall into sin. Drawing from Psalm 35 and Proverbs 24:17, they offer a biblically faithful approach to mourning with humility, praying for repentance, and desiring God’s glory above all.Whether you’re a pastor, teacher, or faithful listener, this episode will deepen your understanding of preaching, spiritual formation, and how God uses His Word—even when the preacher isn’t feeling it.

The guys address common misunderstandings, clarifying that expository preaching doesn't always mean a strict verse-by-verse approach, but rather letting the structure and flow of the biblical text set the pace—whether it's by scene, pericope, stanza, or argument.Key discussion points and benefits highlighted include:God sets the agenda, not the preacher: Ensuring the sermon's message is derived directly from Scripture.Addressing hard topics: Expository preaching naturally leads to confronting difficult subjects that might otherwise be avoided.Balanced spiritual diet: Over time, listeners receive comprehensive teaching across the breadth of God's Word.Empowering the listener: People learn to understand the context of Scripture and feed on it themselves, becoming less dependent on the preacher.Addressing unfelt needs: The Word speaks to areas of life listeners may not even realize they need to address, often in profoundly surprising ways. The conversation also explores the role of "text-topical" preaching, where specific topics are addressed directly from relevant biblical passages. Finally, the team distinguishes between preaching, teaching, and dialogue, explaining how the principles of exposition extend beyond the Sunday pulpit into smaller group settings and individual discipleship, always with the aim of letting Christ speak through His Word to mature His people. This episode underscores that faithful proclamation of the Word is alive, active, and capable of converting souls and sanctifying saints, moving listeners from merely hearing a man to truly hearing from God.

What is Expository Preaching? (Part 1)
In this episode, your host Pastor Kent is joined by Matt and Jeremy for an in-depth discussion on expository preaching. The conversation begins by defining expository preaching, emphasizing how it ensures the sermon's shape and emphasis are solely derived from the biblical text. They explore the historical and biblical mandate for this approach, drawing from significant passages and examples:2 Timothy 3:16-17 & 4:2: Highlighting Paul's charge to Timothy to "preach the word" and the divine inspiration and profitability of Scripture.1 Timothy 4:13: Underscoring the importance of devoting oneself to the public reading, exhortation, and teaching of the Word.Nehemiah 8: Examining Ezra's public reading and explanation of the Law, demonstrating an Old Testament example of exposition leading to understanding, worship, and obedience.Luke 24:45-47: Discussing how Jesus himself, post-resurrection, opened the minds of his disciples to understand how all the Scriptures speak of him, reinforcing Christ-centered preaching. The discussion also clarifies what expository preaching is not, dispelling misconceptions about verse-by-verse constraints while maintaining a focus on the text's intended meaning. The speakers emphasize that the goal is not merely intellectual understanding but ultimately to lead listeners to worship, obedience, and a deeper grasp of Christ as revealed throughout the entire Bible. The episode concludes by portraying the Sunday service as a "kitchen table" where Christ feeds his people through the faithful proclamation of his Word, strengthening them for the week ahead. This conversation sets the stage for future episodes, particularly focusing on the practical benefits and applications of expository preaching in the life of believers and the church.

Why should I care about the local church? - Part 1
Join host Kent Dresdow and executive pastors Matt and Jeremy on afterWord as they begin a conversation about the profound importance of the local church. Kicking off the discussion, they explore the biblical understanding of the church as ekklesia, the "called-out ones," emphasizing the significance of the gathered assembly of believers. The pastors address common questions, including a clarification of Matthew 18:20, explaining its context within church discipline rather than as a justification for isolated faith.
